Yeah, I forgot about Pokemon.

There's a slight amount of justification for random battles in Pokemon. Since that game is about catching rare creatures and such, a bit of randomness is acceptable. Still, they need to update that game and figure out a way to have you catching rare Pokemon without random battles.

My theory is that Nintendo is indeed working on a "True Successor" to the GBA, but only as a plan B. If the DS tanks and the PSP succeeds, that will show to Nintendo that all gamers really care about is pretty graphics and FMV and stuff.

Then, they would release the "true" iteration to the Gameboy dynasty. It would exceed the graphical quality of the PSP, and would use some sort of mini-disc of its own. It wouldn't have any of the really innovative stuff the DS has like touch-screen, since gamers didn't care about those features. Remember, I'm talking hypothetical here.

So basically, Nintendo calling the DS the "third pillar" is just to save face should anything go awry. I'm sure that if the DS does succeed, you can start calling it the second pillar, and that it would really be the successor to the GBA.

I've yet to play an RPG that didn't use random battles that I didn't like. Yeah, double negative. Sue me. Anyway, I think that's because RPG makers that let you see enemies beforehand are actually concerned about not using outdated game mechanics, and therefore tend to make a better game overall.

I believe Nintendo understands this. Nintendo knows how to make t3h funs. Just look at the RPGs they've worked on:

Super Mario RPG. Square made this one, but I'll bet a hojillion dollars it was Nintendo's hand in the development that kept this game random battle free. The game was beloved by many.

Earthbound. No random battles. Beloved by many. And by many, I mean the scary obsessive fans that inhabit Starmen.net that somehow STILL find a way to update a website every day for a game that came out a decade ago.

Paper Mario. No random battles. Beloved by many.

Mario & Luigi. See above.

I think I made my point. Nintendo knows that random battles != fun. Nintendo puts the game into Role Playing Game.

I honestly believe that random battles would be virtually extinct if the Final Fantasy games didn't use them anymore. It's an uber-popular series with a lot of influence. I think most other developers see its success, and say "Hey, Final Fantasy uses random battles, and that series is considered to be top-tier. Millions of people love it. What's good enough for Final Fantasy is good enough for us."

All I know is, when I play an RPG with a lot of random battles, I start thinking to myself "I swear, if I get into ONE more battle before I reach the exit, there's going to be a murder-suicide on the news REAL soon."

Boy, am I glad that I usually don't check this site early in the day.

I missed all the rage-over-absolutely-nothing bit.

"This is virtually the same as the Cube online model: Nintendo does nothing and so everyone else does nothing. "

The main difference is that the Cube modems were sold separately. Third parties don't believe that enough Cube owners have broadband adapters to warrant putting in an online mode if not enough people can even use it. The DS has these capabilites built right into it, so Nintendo itself doesn't need to pimp online in its own games in order to get people to buy some modem.

Random battles are an archaic way of handling enemy encounters. I can tolerate them if the frequency of the battles is low, but honestly, in this day and age it should be done away with. I find that random battles tend to deter exploration. I mean, you might see a treasure chest across the room, but is it really worth 5 minutes of fighting just to get some crappy potion? Usually not.

Also, random battles really piss me off when I get lost. Sometimes, after a long battle, I might forget which way I was headed. Once I realize I'm going in the wrong direction and turn around, I have to fight another battle.

Random battles also just don't make any sense. It's completely illogical why you can keep getting in fights simply by running around in circles in an empty room.

Anyway, I see random battles as being the lazy way out. If they actually had to place enemies in a level, then that would require some actual thought and level design. They would actually have to spend some time deciding where to place enemies, which enemies to put where, etc...

I couldn't believe IGN's review of TOS actually complained about being able to avoid random encounters. "Oh noes! Making the game less tedious is the terribles!"

Wow.

Sony losing support. I never thought I'd hear that.

This makes things a lot more interesting. All that the doomsayers and bashers have been saying is "Sony has a disc based medium and Nintendo has carts. It's PS1 vs. N64 all over again."

Looks like now we can say "It IS PS1 vs. N64. The company with Square wins! LOLOLOLOL!!!!11111"

Am I the only one that sees the irony here? Square (and Enix) is dropping support in favor of the portable that has the smaller medium.

I must say I was hoping for slightly higher scores. At least a 9.0. Especially considering that Japanese gamers voted it the most satisfying game experience of 2003.

I think it's just a bunch of little things that are dragging down the score. Like the mediocre voice acting, the need to level up for bosses, etc...

I guess I was just expecting reviewers to be a little more lenient with these little flaws, considering that the game is actually supposed to be FUN. How often do you hear that descriptor for an RPG? Not often. Even for RPGs that get really high scores (FF8).

But I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. I just hope the game sells well. Then, Namco should port Tales of Eternia to the Cube in the U.S., just to stick it to Sony for not licensing the game for some insane reason.

Ah, like a moth to a flame, I'm drawn towards any anti-EGM discussion.

It's all so sad, too. I've been reading EGM almost since the beginning, and it's sad to see how far they've sunk. I think Ian Sane hit the nail on the head about them sucking up to whoever is #1. During the Snes/Sega days, they made damn sure not to favor one console over the other. The console race was much closer, so I imagine if they pissed off one fanbase, they'd lose about half their readers. I even remember one time, a reader asked them which console was better. Their response was something along the lines of "If you like RPGs, adventure games, and platformers the Snes is best. If you like sports, action games, and shooters the Genesis is best."

See, that's an infinitely more useful guide to which system to get than saying flat out "The Xbox is best". What EGM should've said was "Get an Xbox if you like FPS and PC style games in general, get a Gamecube if you like Nintendo games."

Anyway, the magazine definitely got more anti-Nintendo as Sony became dominant. I remember one letter sent in asking why EGM was so down on Nintendo. EGM gave some bullsh!t response like "Oh, we're not down on Nintendo, we're commiserating with you guys". By the end of the generation, one editor even openly said that he didn't miss the N64 at all.

Now, the magazine seems to be much more targeted to what the casual gamers want. The games that are featured on the cover are usually some hyped up M rated GTA inspired crime spree game i.e. State of Emergency, Driv3r, or any other currently popular series. You'd think they'd at least put Viewtiful Joe on the cover, but no. They also seem to be obsessive about interviewing celebrities about their favorite games. It's usually just some clueless supermodel that likes to play Pac-man and Tetris. The rest of the time it's some clueless actor that likes to play GTA, Halo, Madden and whatever else is popular with the casual gamers.

Did I mention they no longer have a previews section? I'm not kidding. Virtually the only game that gets an in-depth look is whichever one is featured on the cover.

As for this particular issue, like the person who started this thread, I knew the moment I saw the cover that they would favor the PSP. I was annoyed about how much they complained about the DS's appearance, like it actually matters. They also seemed much more concerned about the DS's screen getting scratched than the PSP. It even says on the cover "We tell you which one is best", as though they've actually had extensive playtime with both to come to a final conclusion. In the latest Hsu and Chan comic, they half-jokingly campare the two systems, but say that the PSP will be for hardcore gamers, and that the DS is for casual gamers and little kids. The rest of the EGM staff seem to have similar feelings, though they didn't quite use those words.

Overall, just another bad issue from a mag that continues to worsen.

536
Ridiculous. I was looking forward to this, since I missed out on the classic Mega Man games. Now I'll probably just wait until it makes it to the bargain bins. Which might not be long.

Even though I may not be used to playing Mega Man games, I'm sure this whole A button, B button garbage would throw me off, too. Virtually every NES game I ever played had you jump with the A button, and shoot/attack with the B button. Surely, it must've crossed the minds of the people making this game at least once that this control scheme might be... awkward for some people, so why they didn't add a customizable control scheme is beyond me.

Not including the remixed tracks is just more ammo for Nintendo haters.

NES games taking up hundreds of Megabytes is beyond absurdity. Why? Why not just use an NES emulator?

Let's all hope that if this game doesn't sell well on the Cube, that Capcom doesn't draw the conclusion that Mega Man games don't sell on the Cube, but rather that flawed ports don't sell.

Please, Capcom. Don't go Konami on us.

Even though EGM is the bane of my existence, I would have to admit that their rumors have become marginally more accurate lately. Of course, it's mostly because they've started stealing rumors from other sites, or because some of these "rumors" are simply semi-confirmed pieces of news.

For example, in the latest issue they report in the rumors section that Nintendo's next console will be *gasp* backwards compatible. Then they have the huevos to say "You heard it here first". Funny, I thought I heard it MONTHS ago when Iwata said so himself! At least, he supposedly said it. Either way, it's old news. Morons.

Anyway if this is true, I'm completely confounded. Has ANY Sega game sold well on the Xbox? At the very best, it's a lateral move.

M rated games may be more popular on the Xbox, but not the kind SK makes. Not unless SK shifts towards gratuitous gore and run'n'gun gameplay. Also, SK may not be capable of creating the level of graphics that Xbox owners expect from a game. Personally, I thought Twin Snakes looked great, but virtually every Nintendo hater on any forum would say "LOL!!! yuo think msg twen snakes looks grate??? LOLOLOL!!1 maybe on LAMEcube it looks good cuz cube grafics suk but its nothing comprared to HALO 2! it dosent even have pixel bumped shading fur mapping voxel blast proccessing mode 7 LOLOLOLOLOL!! sk sucks at teh grafics!"

It's just that SK + Nintendo made sense. SK had a purpose. They would be THE company to go to for M rated games on the Cube. They stood out, or at least were starting to. SK + Xbox means they have no purpose. They'll just be M rated game maker #3234507. I don't think their games will stand out when next to GTA, Ninja Gaiden and Halo. I just don't see ANY casual gamers picking up something like Eternal Darkness that features a middle-aged fat man with a wig over games that have ninjas and big guns. Ever.

Honestly, at this point I just don't care anymore. If SK has become an Xbox (or Sony) exclusive, then Dyack simply isn't the man I thought he was.

If SK is merely going multiplatform, and will continue to support the Cube, fine. As long I get Too Human, it's not that big of a deal. If not... sigh...

The sad part is, SK was supposed to have a Cube game at E3. Coupled with Denis saying he would never leave Nintendo, I suspect that he was offered a huge money hat from Microsoft at the last minute. I swear, if Dyack does a complete 180 and starts badmouthing Nintendo like Ken Lobb did, I'll never trust what anybody in the game industry says.

"Nintendo Rocks!"

2 months later...

"Come to think of it, they don't. Do you like my hat? It's made of MONEY! Would you like to stay for lunch? I think we're having MONEY!"

I fear that this is starting to become a trend. Let Nintendo nurture your company from obscurity, then leave and start working for the competition. Square and Rare did this. I hope this isn't the case here.

Unfortunately... the site appears to be down. So, uh, I have no proof.

Sorry.

I think the main problem with third parties is that they only think of the here and now, and not the big picture. They only care about userbase, and little else. They're not even thinking about what it would mean to have a Sony monopoly on the console market. If they thought Nintendo was mean when they were at the top, what makes them think Sony will be any different?

I also don't get why 3rd parties refuse to release a Cube version of a game, even when there is no 1st or 2nd party title to compete with it. I mean, why does the Cube get so few RPGs? Nintendo seldom makes those kinds of games, yet most RPG makers decided "Let's only release RPGs on the PS2, so that we'll have more competition with other RPGs". See, Namco gets it. Why are they making ToS and Baten Kaitos for the Cube, even though it has so few RPGs on it? Oh, right. It's because the Cube has so few RPGs that it makes perfect sense to make them for it. It's beyond me why most would rather compete directly with the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, and the million other smaller RPGs, when they could make a killing on the Cube with so little competition.

I'm really starting to get fed up with a lot of 3rd parties, especially with the ones that release shoddy ports. I find it extremely insulting when they do that, because they're essentially saying that if you don't own the most popular console, you don't deserve a good version of a game, or you're too dumb to tell the difference. Why are PS2 and Xbox owners the only ones that get ports with effort put into them? It's because they know they can't piss off their largest markets, and it doesn't matter how they treat us. They'll just sell however many copies they can to the uninformed gamer that thinks the version they're buying is as good as the one that came out on the PS2 six months ago. PS2 owners get the royal treatment while us Gamecube peasants get the royal screwjob. They're not even the least bit concerned of their name being dragged through the mud because of it, because they know they can just blame Nintendo and its "kiddy" userbase for it not selling.

I would even go so far as to say that Konami is the same as these other companies, though they do it in a slightly different way. Instead of releasing crappy ports on the Cube, they simply release games that are crappy to begin with for the Cube. The PS2, and to a lesser extent the Xbox, get all the good stuff, while those of us who had the audacity to dare choose the console that has a smaller userbase gets the bottom of the barrel. Mickey Mouse and other forgettable crap. Remember, Konami is supposedly a top-tier developer. So why does the Cube get so much crap from them? Again, they don't care how they treat the customers of the console with the smallest userbase. They can get away with it. Konami gets accolades for each good game they release on PS2 or Xbox, but manages to make Nintendo look bad for each sh*tty Disney sports game on the Cube. Just blame Nintendo for being such a kiddy company, which is why they didn't release something like Silent Hill instead, and it deflects the fact that they're making bad games for the system. Oh, but Konami will always make sure to release the good Castlevania/Metroid rip-off rehashes for the GBA. Can't afford to piss off a userbase that big.

Konami can just go to hell. Twin Snakes doesn't make up for anything. Did you know that they almost let all the voice actors go, because the voice actors wanted to be paid the same amount they got for MGS2, but Konami was only willing to pay the same amount they got for doing the original MGS (which was supposedly very little). Which is what leads me to believe this is a hoax. When has Nintendo Customer Service ever confirmed something before any official statement? Never, to my knowledge. The fact that they're using the same response as Dyack's doesn't neccessarily mean anything. If it is a hoax, I would imagine both parties would've gotten together to get their stories straight.

I also find it strange how this arguably large piece of news has seemingly fallen off the radar. Sure, Nintendo forums are ablaze about this, but where are the "Nintendo is doomed because they lost SK" knee-jerk editorials that usually pop up when something like this happens?

As for the reason why Nintendo would do something so cool as to create a hoax, when it's not in their nature to be so cool... I think that's the point. Supposedly Nintendo plans on trying to change its image at E3, and pulling off a stunt like this would be a good start. Just imagine, what would be the only black mark on Nintendo's E3 showing this year, and it's just a joke. And a great one at that.

Anyway, it's not like I'm so certain I would bet my life on it, it's just that nothing adds up. My only two conclusions at this point are:

1. The gaming media are doing a piss-poor job of following up on this bombshell story.

2. The gaming media are doing a piss-poor job of following up on this bombshell story purposely, because it's a hoax.

Oh, and in the latest issue of Nintendo Power, they said they hoped on bringing info on SK's next big project soon. Makes you wonder...

There's no reason why the game can't be both a Zelda game and an SK game. Remember, not too long ago Dyack made a comment about how he'd like to make a realistic, mature Zelda game.

I just dismissed it as nothing at the time, because EVERY time Dyack mentions a game, everybody assumes that he's hinting he's actually making that game.

"Oh! Denis said he likes Kid Icarus! Oh no! Nintendo is forcing him to make Kid Icarus! I hates you Nintendos!!!111one"

I wonder just what exactly they mean by "Mature" Zelda. Does that just mean it's not going to be cel shaded... or does that mean it will have a deep storyline, some blood, and Link running over wenches with his horse?

Zounds!  I say, Holmes, you've cracked the case!

You know, that very thought crossed my mind a few times. Just imagine, it's E3 and Nintendo announces "Yes, it's entirely true. Silicon Knights is no longer a Nintendo second party... BECAUSE THEY'RE NOW A NINTENDO FIRST PARTY!"

Everyone cheers and celebrates. All is right with the world.

But maybe that's just more wishful thinking.

Anyway, I'm starting to wonder. If this is real, what does that make Denis Dyack? Was all that love for Nintendo just a facade? Did he end up selling out to the highest bidder the first chance he got? It's stuff like this that is really disillusioning me about the game industry as a whole.

It's the comment he made in that two month old interview that bothers me the most. The one about never, ever leaving Nintendo. I find it hard to believe that something came up all of a sudden in the past two months that made him go from a true believer, to jumping ship. More likely, he was considering this for a while, and was being untruthful about never leaving Nintendo.

In fact, much of what is being claimed now is completely contrary to what Denis has said for the past few years. It seems that Nintendo is saying that there were too many creative differences. Again, contrary to what Denis has said. He made it sound like working with Nintendo was the greatest thing in the world. He always said the SK's philosophy and Nintendo's were the same.

Anyway, back to this being a hoax. It's bizzare how this came completely out of the blue. There are usually a few rumblings when something like this happens, like with Rare. There were absolutely no signs of trouble whatsoever with SK.

I also find Nintendo's response to this a bit out of the ordinary. With Rare, they completely avoided answering the question every way they could for, what? A whole year? They always either gave a "We don't comment on rumors", or doublespeak like "Our relationship with Rare is as good as always". They didn't confirm it until everything was all worked out.

Now, Nintendo is apparantly willing to acknowledge the breakup, and give a reason for it, yet this is before any official press release, and before all the details have been worked out.

Whether this is a hoax or not, it's one incredibly weird situation.

I don't know what to make out of this. I'm about 50/50 on whether this is real or not.

None of this makes sense. For the past few years Dyack has been nothing but praises for Nintendo. He talks about just how great it was working with Nintendo and Miyamoto. Just two months ago he spoke as though SK and Nintendo were a singular entity. He reiterates on numerous occassions that they're never, EVER going anywhere else, and then... BAM! Third party.

When he spoke to Jonny, he assumed sales of MGS would be good. So if this is about not getting enough sales, he certainly didn't say it. I consider Dyack to be a pretty straight shooter. Why hasn't he just come right out and said anything about this? Why the split? Why now, when two months ago he said this would never happen? What could've possibly happened in the past two months to make him go from "NINTENDO FOREVER!!!" to "we may continue making games for Nintendo"?

I don't think it's entirely fair to sit back and laugh at those believing this is a hoax:

1. Because (and this is aimed at PGC staff) most of us assume you would've set us straight the moment this supposedly ridiculous theory got it's own thread. We respect you guys, and by not saying right away that the 3:33 thing was pure coincidence, that led to speculation that they were on to something and got plenty of people's hopes up. People go to your site to get accurate information, not to be laughed at. I dunno... I guess I just can't find much humor in this latest bit of news.

2. It's friggin' Silicon Knights! If it were any other company, I'd immediately dismiss these rumors. But they made a game where much of the premise revolved around the fact that you don't know what is real, and what is not. I certainly feel that way about this situation.

I think Bill said it best. If this is a joke, then Nintendo would have to be in on this, and Denis obviously would be too. No use in prying information from those two if that information is going to be false anyway.

The way I see it, this theory is pretty far fetched, but so is SK going third party. I don't know, but I'll believe it when I see an official press release from Nintendo.

I'm kind of leaning towards SK's departure as being the cold hard truth, mostly because sites like IGNcube and PGC are finally saying that these rumors are nonsense, instead of just letting people speculate so they can sit back and laugh at them, you rat bastards.

Oh, and want to know something really weird? PGC wasn't the only site that posted the news at 3:33. Gamerfeed did too. Mantorok is watching...

Even if they wanted to include the PSX version, wouldn't it require some sort of PSX emulator? Not forgetting the fact that it would probably require it's own disc...

A MUCH more intelligent question would've been "Will Twin Snakes include the Nes or MSX Metal Gear games?"

I read somewhere that Denis was a former Tae Kwon Do Champion of Canada. Maybe he should start kicking some ass whenever he gets asked a stupid question.

Nice post Mouse, though I fear it will fall on deaf ears.

That's why I truly believe that it's not competition between multiple consoles that brings the best out in developers, but competition between each other on one console, at the very most two if both have extremely good 1st parties. I say this because it forces the 3rd parties to rise to the level of quality of the 1st party to catch the buyer's eye.

My thoughts exactly.

Anyway, to be fair, I didn't find that editorial to be completely idiotic. I didn't agree with it, but at least it's not nearly as bad as the editorial's written by the mainstream press from journalists who know absolutely nothing about games or the games industry, yet they still somehow think they know exactly what Nintendo should be doing.

Also, I cannot believe he actually brought up the whole "OMG! I CANT BELIEVE NINTENDO SOLD RARE! WTF!!!!". I could understand if this editorial was written, oh, say... A YEAR AGO, but Post-Grabbed by the Ghoulies...

Sigh. I just wish that for ONCE, when these editorial writers bring up online gaming, they would at least acknowledge how costly it's been for Microsoft. Just once. Instead, they just make it sound like Nintendo is ignoring online for no reason whatsoever. All online is ever going to be, for this generation anyway, is a loss-leader. It may get people to buy a certain game, or even a system, but by itself online hasn't proven to a cash cow. For now. Maybe next generation, but not now.
