General Chat / RE:PBS special "Video Game Revolution"
« on: September 10, 2004, 08:10:11 PM »
I only caught about the last hour or so of the show, but from what I saw Miyamoto said like one sentence, while Jason Rubin said a whole lot more.

The amount of air-time for each interviewee should've been based on how much influence that person has had on the industry. In other words, the amount of time Miyamoto and Rubin spoke should've been reversed.

At least it wasn't completely shockingly ignorant like most attempts at covering videogames from the mainstream.

The sad thing is.  Nintendo will probably make money of all these games, and nobody will complain about the reharsh these games really are.

The only one of the bunch I would consider to be a rehash is the Cube game. The rest are providing a completely different game experience.

WarioWario DS is currently the biggest reason I plan on picking up the DS at launch. It's doing stuff that has never been done before in videogames. Rehash means using the exact same game mechanics the last game used, only with new levels and/or minor tweaks. The only similarity I see is that they all feature a bunch of "microgames". The particular games featured, and the way that they are played are entirely different between each game (again, except for the Cube game). That's about as far away from rehash as you can get.

As long as the new GBA WarioWare game is fun and provides a different experience than the first one, I'll pick it up in a heartbeat.

It's strange how we know absolutely nothing new about this situation. How is it that Matt C. "knows" the specs and features of the Revolution, yet has no idea what's going on at SK? At the very least you'd think some anonymous SK employee would post on a message board somewhere.

"Uh, yeah. The thing is, we've been bought out by Acclaim and are now making Too Human for the Gizmondo. Half the staff have committed suicide. Other than that it's business as usual."

Ah, so you can resume play in caves. The only reason I wasn't sure if you could do that is because the game never explicitly says so. I was just too afraid to risk testing it out and losing my progress.

And I agree that the way the product placement is done fits well in the game. But it doesn't seem to be the most flattering way to advertise your product. I mean, the whole joke of the game is that you're collecting absolutely worthless junk. Except for the Game & Watch.

I'm also glad that Metts rated the graphics so highly in his reveiw. It's truly an underrated aspect of the game. I find it strange how reviewers went absolutely nuts over the graphics in PoP, yet not so much over Pikmin 2. The only reason I mention PoP is because the way the graphics look in the Piklopedia look virtually identical to the kind of lighting effects used in PoP, if not better. Most of the items look damn near photorealistic up close, too. If I'm not mistaken (and I usually am), there's bumpmapping on most items and several enemies, and even on some of the environments.

Oh, and they didn't just say "mammorial" in a Nintendo game, did they?

The reason the website hasn't been updated in OVER A YEAR is because Dyack has been stuck in the Trapper Dimension.

The strange thing is, didn't Nintendo refer to Treasure as a second party at one point?

I distinctly remember that Nintendo refused to say who was developing Wario World at one point, only to say that is was being made by a Nintendo second party. Weird. Maybe some plans to buy out Treasure fell through.

And they NEED to release Contra as part of the classic NES series. I would actually be willing to pay $20 for that game.

Pikmin 2 gets my vote for game of the year, unless something better comes along (not likely).

The Pikmin are smarter, though. They'll bunch up when crossing a bridge. That was a real chore in the first game. They almost never get stuck behind walls. But it is annoying when they get "deselected" sometimes after fighting an enemy.

I'm glad there's some real challenge this time. I lost over 70 Pikmin in one cave. And I'm not even halfway through the game. I think.

My biggest gripe is that there's no sort of suspend save feature while in the caves. The last one I went through took over an hour. It seems a bit much to be played in one sitting.

I refuse to even call Infogrames by their new name. It was just a cheap way to attach a respectable name to a sh!tty company in order to fool casual 20 somethings into thinking the glory days of Atari have returned.

Holy crap! Has anyone else played this game? It's by Treasure, and it should be called Viewtiful Joe Advance.

The basic gameplay is sort of a beat'em up, kind of like Viewtiful Joe. Not as good as Viewtiful Joe, mind you, but still awesome. There are also some shmup levels.

The biggest problem is that it's short, but that's really expected from a Treasure game at this point. It also suffers from some pretty nasty slowdown at times.

Still, it's probably my favorite 3rd party game in my GBA game collection at this point.

"I guess noone here remembers the old acclaim, the one from the days of not only N64, but the dreamcast, snes, genesis, gameboy, game gear, and original nes, Acclaim."

No, I guess we don't. Could you refresh our memory? I vaguely remember a decent game here and there, but most of it was stuff that Acclaim only published (Double Dragon II), and not stuff they made themselves.

"And Acclaim didn't talk a whole bunch of sh1t about Nintendo, they simply said that their games did not sell on GC. Many companies have said the same thing. If Acclaim looks at it's sale figures, and sees that their GC development hurt them, ofcourse they should say that."

What bothers us is that Acclaim ignored the real problem. Their games sold poorly, because the games were of poor quality. Instead of dropping Nintendo support, they should've started making better games.

Anyway, I do understand the fact that Acclaim's strong support early on in the N64's life helped it with games like Turok, but it goes both ways. Acclaim was saved from bankruptcy back then because Turok sold so well on the N64. Acclaim owes more to Nintendo than the other way around. Besides, there was a sharp drop in quality in their games roughly halfway in the N64's life.

I'm not going to be rejoicing or anything since having a bunch of people lose their jobs is kinda sad, but I'm not going to feel all that sorry for Acclaim, either. The days when you could churn out total crap and expect to make a quick buck are coming to an end. Acclaim should've figured that out a long time ago. Acclaim decided to blame Nintendo instead of whipping itself into shape.

For a brief period early on in the N64's life, I actually considered Acclaim to be a quality company, or at least a company that was on the road to becoming quality. It became clear that they were back to their old habits when they made those sh!tty South Park games.

It's a shame, because Acclaim has demonstrated that they can make good games when they really want to. But they chose the path of shovelware. Sigh.

The demo's not terribly long, but it shows off enough to give you an idea of what to expect. You get to use the Light and Dark beams, some fighting with Space Pirates, a brief glimpse of Dark Samus, a trip to the Dark world, and a skirmish with the Ing.

I'm assuming you don't start out with the other beams in the actual game, though.

The new scan visor makes the old one look like crap. It's sort of like the targeting computer in Rogue Leader, where the entire object is shaded a certain color. It makes finding scannable objects a million times easier.

I noticed that the rooms in the Dark world have different names than their Light world counterparts, so it looks like Retro isn't about to get lazy on us.

And Space Pirates dislike theft, apparantly.

There are two kinds of people that think this would be a good idea:

1. Those that don't own Nintendo consoles and bash Nintendo for being too kiddy, but secretly would love to play Nintendo games.

2. A certain type of Nintendo fan that is more concerned with Nintendo being #1 than anything else. They figure that being homogenized with MS is the only way Nintendo could ever compete with Sony.

Gah, why are we even discussing this? We know this is never going to happen. Ever.

I know why. Not much game news during the summer.

I'm sure they will... for a while. But if anyone plans on waiting until some DS SP comes out, it will be slim pickings on the GBA front eventually. I'm sure Nintendo is going to focus most of its portable software on the DS, unless something goes horribly, horribly wrong.

I'm just saying, holding off on buying a DS until an upgrade that may never come out, while the GBA support dwindles as devs shift support to the DS may not be the best course of action.

Blah.

If Nintendo wasn't planning on releasing the DS this holiday season, then people would be calling Nintendo stupid for not getting a head start, and for not releasing it during the busiest shopping season of the year.

I seem to recall that when the PSP was first annouced, many doubted Nintendo would come up with another portable to counter it. People said that Nintendo was getting complacent with its dominance in portable gaming, and that they would wait until after the PSP took a considerable chunk out of the GBA marketshare, and it would be too late.

I also seem to recall people complaining about how Nintendo took too long before they finally decided to release a significant upgrade to the Gameboy i.e. GBC and GBA.

Meh, whatever. I'm gladly going to pick up the DS at launch. If the rest of you want to wait 2+ years until a "DS SP" comes out, you'd better hope Nintendo continues to support the GBA after DS becomes its main portable.

Oh, don't get me wrong. Sony rejecting quality games just because they don't have a "realistic" look is most certainly evil. But from a Nintendo owner's perspective, I think it's rather nice of them. For all we know, we may never have gotten TOS if Sony had a different attitude. Thanks for letting us have this awesome game, Sony!

If they want to piss off 3rd parties and drive them over to Nintendo, I say let them.

I'm curious as to how Sony fanboys react to SCEA's blocks. I mean, if NOA blocked some GTA game from coming to the Gamecube, 95% of the people here would be furious and would vow to never buy another Nintendo console ever again. Do Sony fans just shrug it off and go "Eh, who cares? It's probably a kiddy game anyway.", or does it bother them that they're getting screwed out of some excellent games just because Sony doesn't like the way it looks?

I found a bug in the game. At the first House of Guidance in Tethe'alla, there's a guy who will trade materials for Grade. If you select Metal Sphere, you'll pay the 8 Grade but get no Metal Sphere. You can get the other items he offers with no problems. Can anybody else confirm this?

If anybody cares, Nintendo Power has had Tales of Phantasia listed under upcoming GBA releases for some time. Which is strange, since they never list Japan only releases.

Maybe they know something we don't know, or maybe it's just a mistake.

If TOS is selling as well as most people think, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't release it in North America.

TOS is quite possibly my all-time favorite RPG. It's just so damn fun. I played it for nearly ten hours the first day I got it.

Easily the best battle system of any RPG. The AI controlled teammates are surprisingly good. Not as good as a human player, but better than I ever hoped. They're smart enough to suddenly go after an enemy that's in the middle of casting a spell in order to stop it. I've seen them use their special Guardian abilites moments before they're hit by a devestatingly powerful attack. They're very dependable.

I've beaten the game at 56 hours, and it's amazing how much stuff I missed. Tons of replay value.

Buy this game, you INFERIOR BEINGS!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Metroid Prime 2!!...2!...2......
« on: July 27, 2004, 10:31:41 PM »
Basically, my feelings about Retro including a deathmatch mode in Prime 2 are that Retro is making a mistake this time that they were smart enough to avoid the last time around.

See, when Prime 1 was first revealed to take place in first person, most fans freaked out. "Freaked out" is an understatement. It was more like "Oh no Retro is raping our beloved franchise! FPS? WTF!?! Burn in hell, Retro! Burn in heeeeellllllll!". All the Metroid fans KNEW Prime was going to suck. They KNEW that Metroid SHOULD have been a third-person action adventure. There was no way they could capture the "Metroid feel" in first-person, right?

Retro was smart to ignore the fans on that one. Instead of going with the potentially hazardous third-person shooter route, they went with what they knew worked. Now, they're adding a superfluous deathmatch mode because the fans asked for it, even though Retro probably knows it's not a good idea.

Am I saying developers should ignore gamer feedback? Absolutely not. But they should be smart enough to know when NOT to fulfill a request, when they know the request is unfeasible. They're going to get MORE complaints for the weak multiplayer mode than if they had just left it out.

It reminds of how Rare added pointless multiplayer modes to several N64 games just for the sake of having a multiplayer mode. JFG, DK64, Banjo-Tooie...

Before anyone calls me a hypocrite because I act like I know the multiplayer mode wont be anything special, I would like to point out the the E3 impressions were so-so, so it's not like I'm basing my opinion on nothing. I suppose anything could happen by the time the final product launches, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

The bottom line is, they're wasting time on a useless multiplayer mode that would be better spent on making the one player game more awesome.
