TalkBack / RE:n-Space Working on Revolution Titles
« on: February 22, 2006, 07:00:11 PM »
I have a theory that 9 out of 10 people that say that Geist sucks haven't even played it. They just say "Hur hur hur n-Space made Olsen twin games Geist sucks."

Not that I'm saying Geist was flawless. My three biggest problems with the game were:

1. The aiming controls were horrible. Fortunately shooting isn't really a focus in this game, but it really made the game hard to get into at first.

2. The linearity. I want multiple solutions to the puzzles in the sequel.

3. The end of the game. Like a lot of really innovative games (Deus Ex), the last hour or so of Geist has little in the way of creativity and is more a straight-up action game. Definitely not a plus with the crappy controls.

And I liked it more than ED too...

TalkBack / RE:REVIEWS: Chibi-Robo
« on: February 22, 2006, 06:33:47 PM »
Chibi-Robo is one of my favorite games of this generation. It borrows elements from virtually every major Nintendo franchise in one way or another.

I was really impressed by the non-linearity. I discovered a costume 25 hours into the game that could be attained literally within the first few minutes of play. That totally blew my mind.

I got the "opponent has disconnected" statement, too. I also have an unstable connection, so I guess it was both our fault.

By the way... I think the game keeps a secret win-loss record of non-friends. This is the first time I played you as a friend, but for some reason my record previously said I played you on 11/26. Did we ever meet randomly on the Worldwide search? You would know me by my extremely fanboyish Emblem. (Y'know PSP IS DOA lololololols)

There's also another person on my list that it says I've played, but I've yet to encounter them on friend mode.

Ha! Mario disconnected on me. Sure, it might have been because I was boring the hell out of him... or maybe he knew I figured out his weakness. Choco Island 2. That's right. I'd like to see you snake your way around that sumbitch.

And what was with you voting for Yoshi Falls? Everybody knows that track is off limits because it sucks ass.

I agree that the Xbox 360 is hurting the PSP. Remember the sluggish PSP launch in North America? Everybody was all like "Yeah, well that's only because it launched in March. Just wait until the holiday season. It'll be the big 'must have' item of the year."

Although I think the PSP just about lost all the hype it had going for it at launch anyway, the 360 is considered in the mainstream to be the "Big must have item" of the holiday season. The 360 is stealing whatever limelight the PSP could've had.

Has anyone been able to beat the first bonus stage that you unlock after beating the game? That's gotta be the hardest challenge ever put in a game. Ever. Ikaruga is for pansy asses. Trauma Center is where the real challenge is at.

I'm annoyed at how often wusses disconnect when they come in last place. It's a rare occurance to finish an entire circuit with all four players intact.

One time, all three disconnected after I came in first on the first race.

I would just like to point out that prior to E3 of this year, EGM was claiming that PS3 was "orders of magnitude" more powerful than Xbox 360. And they started acting like it was a fact. So... yeah.

Um, I'm almost positive those are the promotional renders from Mario Party 1. They were either featured in the instruction booklet, or were shown before each level, but I'm pretty sure I've seen those "screen shots" before. I call BS.

Edit: Besides, there aren't even any fur-shading effects used on DK, and even DK:JB had that. These are old, old, old.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New DS games announced in latest Famitsu
« on: October 05, 2005, 09:36:30 PM »
Sweet merciful crap. So many games.

I kind of suspected FFIII would be in 3d, since it's been in development for so long. Having it in 3D now makes it a major DS exclusive. If it were just in 2d with roughly Snes quality visuals, the casual gamers probably wouldn't care much. Sure, it would have sold well, but it wouldn't be a system seller. Now that it's in 3d the casual gamers will more likely associate it with the console FF's, and will want to buy a DS for this.

Tingle RPG? Nintendo must be reading my mind.

Tales DS. That's all I ever really wanted from Namco on the DS. Thank you. I think it should be called "Tales of Dual Screenia".

But, yeah. Best system ever.

I'm surprised Sega is willing to make a sequel, considering that the first game bombed.

I agree with couchmonkey that they really need to make some big improvements for the sequel. FTM is a good game in its own right, but WW: Touched blows it away. I already own two "mini-game games" for the DS, and I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy yet another.

The DS isn't designed primarily with gamers in mind

The PSP isn't designed primarily with gamers in mind, either. That's why it's got superfluous movie and MP3 playability.

Quote

DS games are like popcorn movies. They sacrifice depth and complexity to appeal to a mass-market.

Are you talking about the games that are out right now, or the DS lineup in general? Yoshi Touch & Go and WarioWare hardly represent what the DS will be like just a few months from now.

Ian, what exactly do you consider "games for gamers"? And what are these "deep and complex" games that the PSP has that the DS doesn't? I wasn't aware that racing games and sports games were only for the hardcore.

I think this game could do well in North America if they market it mainly as a DBZ game. Put Goku and Vegeta on the cover, and maybe some Naruto and One Piece characters in the background.

David Thomas is my new hero.

I laughed my ass off when I read this:

Quote

David Thomas, Denver Post: I’m not a business reporter, but I think I have what it takes to be a business consultant. I am more than happy to form opinions about things I lack most of the critical facts about. With that in mind, I can confidently say that the movie playback in the PSP is among the stupidest ideas I have ever heard of and is proof that business conglomerates give birth to awkward genetic mutants.

The DS has these little movie carts. They are a joke, a novelty. You buy them for your kids because you think your kids want to watch Pokemon on their Game Boy. And after about 10 minutes your kids look at you and say, “Why would we want to watch Pokemon on our Game Boy? We have a 150 inch plasma television in the basement.”

This doesn’t matter to Nintendo because they are not a movie company and the DS is not really a movie machine. It’s like watching someone cook dinner on the radiator on the car. It’s funny. You might even try a bite of meat. But unless you are a crazy hobo, it will not change you notion of a hot meal.

The PSP really, really wants to think of itself as a multimedia machine. Sony really, really wants you to watch movies on your PSP. And why? I am 100% convinced it is because Sony has a profitable division called Sony Pictures. Sony Computer Entertainment, the division most of us call the PlayStation people, is another big, profitable part of Sony.

Here’s what happened (as it appears in my imagination:

Location: A board meeting on Sony’s Floating Corporate Dirigible, high above the Andes.

Sony Pictures Executive: You know, our Spider-Man movie made a lot of money.

Sony Computer Entertainment Executive: Yes it did. I liked that part where Spidey grabbed that piece of pizza from that guy!

Pictures: Your Spider-Man game didn’t do so bad either. Kids like Spider-Man. Let’s put Spider-Man on the PSP!

Computer Entertainment: You know, you’re right. Let’s do it!

I know you think that businesses decisions are not made like this. And you are right. They are usually made using fewer big words and more grunts.

The point is this: Sony Computer Entertainment wants you to buy PlayStation hardware and games. The big Sony Company wants you to buy anything with the Sony brand on it. So, the idea of getting people to buy movies for a game system must have come from a movie guy. It did not come from a game guy. The game guy surely figured that the whole movie thing would cost him dearly. But in this case, the PlayStation guy probably wants to be THE Big Sony guy, so he goes along with the crazy scheme to add movies on his game machine.

They might as well have added a GPS in the box. At least you could use that for games.

The real problem with this is that no one will ever be able to prove any of it. Movie companies will sell 10,000 extra copies of some stupid horror movie on the PSP and say, “See, we sold an extra 10,000 copies.” Never mind that we’ll never have any idea as to whether or not those 10,000 copies came out of the regular DVD channel or not. The bigger problem is that while people are making a little bit of money, it will mask the fact that they could have made more money by selling a cheaper PSP to more gamers. The cost of the PSP discourages gamers from buying it. And to the extent that the cost of the PSP is higher because of movie support, it has hurt gaming.

Knowing Capcom, they'll milk the Okami franchise with three DS sequels before the end of the year... and then port them all to the PSP.

Because Capcom enjoys pain.

TalkBack / RE:Report Says DS Outplays PSP
« on: July 08, 2005, 06:54:14 PM »
I think the reason the PSP is in the position that it's in is almost entirely due to the higher development costs and system price.

If the cost of developing an original PSP game is similar to the cost of developing a console game, why would a publisher make an original game exclusive to the PSP when it has a much smaller userbase than the PS2? At this point, I think most PSP exclusives are simply there to be the big fish in the small pond. Coded Arms only exists to fill the FPS gap in the PSP's lineup. Why else would a Japanese dev make a FPS? Death Jr. is getting way more attention it ever would than if it had to compete against console platformers.

I believe part of the reason the DS is getting so many original games is because there's more an attitude of innovation with the DS. Odds are that the people who buy a DS are doing so because they want something new, so publishers are more willing to take a risk on delivering something different. At least, that's the only reason I can think of for Capcom to actually be willing to release a wacky lawyer game outside of Japan.

Electroplankton required few resources to develop

I heard it was all done by one guy.

And why has "non-game" become such a dirty word all of a sudden? I have a lot of fond memories of Mario Paint. It's not like being a "non-game" instantly means it can't or wont be enjoyed by a hardcore gamer. Geez, you'd think with all the criticism of Nintendo being too reliant on sequels and franchises that these creative non-games would be at least somewhat welcomed. And of all the DS games announced thus far, a whopping THREE are non-games. Nintendogs, Electroplankton, and Animal Crossing. And Animal Crossing will be online, so going by the logic that Online = Hardcore, AC is actually for hardcore gamers. (Actually, I think it means that AC is intended for everyone, which is kind of what Nintendo is trying to aim for)
