The only reason Geometry Wars got so popular with the 360 crowd was because of early adopters desperately trying to justify their purchase. When a vector graphics game gets more attention on a $400 console than anything else at the time, you know it's because the rest of the launch line-up wasn't very compelling.

And I believe it retailed for $40 on Wii. Might have been part of the problem.

So I pretty much had to buy a PS3 to get experiences that if the Wii were more powerful it probably would have gotten anyway.

Probably not. Gamecube was a beast and third parties largely ignored it. The few ports it did get were often half assed and even ran worse than the PS2 version. There's no reason to believe they wouldn't treat a more powerful Wii the same way.

And how much do you think such a console would've cost at launch anyway? Sony and Microsoft both sold their systems at a loss, so I can't imagine this hypothetical Super Wii retailing for anything less than $400. So whatever appeal the Wiimote had would've been moot since the mainstream would never dish out that much cash for a game console, so Nintendo would neither have marketshare nor third party support.

Seriously, for someone who acts like he's too smart to fall for the bullshit that game companies try to pull, Ian seems to think the very same way as these companies who have no respect for their customers.

Ian and the Game Industry are on the same wavelength.

I'm depressed now.

I think the glowing orb could be a real dealbreaker.

"Immersion" is really important to the hardcore crowd, and having a big glowing sphere in your line of sight is going to be a real big distraction.

Possibly the best third party game on Wii.

It's giving me the same vibe I got from those old Quintet games like Actraiser and the Soulblazer series. You conquer more of the world and it slowly becomes more lively.

The lack of pointer controls is really the only significant problem I have with this game. If there are multiple enemies, I often can't target the one I want. I also don't like the fact that pressing the B button recalls ALL your guys. It wouldn't have to be that way if it used the pointer.

And yeah, having your guys "die" in battle isn't that big of a deal. I once lost 14 in a single boss battle and the next day all 14 were on the beach. After about 30 or 40 deaths, I've finally had one guy perma-die on me.

I'll summarize:

Quote
Dohta:I remember you asking us at the time: “Look, are you really sure you can make it?" (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:And you said: “We’ll pull out all the stops!” (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Shimamura:You could say that! (laughs)

Quote
Sato:Yes, well… I felt that my expectations may have been a little bit excessive… (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Shimamura:And that’s when we all found ourselves saying: "You can make it stop! You can make it stop!" (laughs)

Quote
Yamashita:We were saying: "Look, you can make it stop at the last second!” (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:That’s exactly what we thought: “What are we going to do with this?” (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Licensing an island! (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:Well, I was really taken aback. In fact, I was at a loss for words! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Well, that's not surprising considering you’d just heard someone suggest turning an island into a character and then licensing it out! (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:Absolutely! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Yamashita:You could of course also stop the sword just before making the strike! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:They made each of the mini-games end within five seconds! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Yamashita:At first, I really thought it would be impossible, but I knew that if anyone could do something about it, it would be Ota-san. And indeed it turned out that he managed to do something! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Miyamoto:I’m afraid we can’t reveal just how the magic works! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:So without knowing how you'd actually go about it, you just went ahead and said "Let’s have 1000 opponents!" (laughs)

Quote
Yamashita:Right. We thought that the more opponents we had, the better! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Yamashita:Yes, that’s true. (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:You had already used them all! (laughs)

Quote
Yamashita:Right, we had used them all! (laughs)

Quote
Sato:We would say things like: “This really has that ‘resort feel’!” (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:That phrase “resort feel” really reminds me of the way the team who developed Zelda referred to that “Zelda-esque” quality. (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:I’m not sure it’s such a good idea to confuse onsen and tropical resorts! (laughs)

Iwata:The fact that the developer of the game is able to describe the rallies using terms like that certainly convinces me that you’ve nailed it! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:Yes, I did it! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Miyamoto:Have I really? (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:(laughs) I can remember that wakeboarding has been a goal of yours for the last ten years and doing an aerial flyover has been a goal for twenty years.

Quote
Yamashita:It’s 3000 points! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Shimamura:Right after getting back to Japan, he suddenly said: “You know we’re including golf now.” Apparently he’d stated in an interview that this time round golf shots would be determined by the backswing, even though at that time a golf game didn't exist in any shape or form! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:It’s a trick he often uses! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Shimamura:That’s because of the “18 Hole Incident”. (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:“The 18 Hole Incident”? Tell us about that! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:That’s another well-worn technique! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Miyamoto:We won ourselves some extra time while things were left to stew in the pressure cooker! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Read the previous Iwata Asks interview and all will become clear! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Fortunately? It certainly wasn’t a fortunate development from a business perspective! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:I bet you sounded really happy when you shouted it! (laughs)

Quote
Miyamoto:I really did shout! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:You think you’re approaching the finish line when someone shouts "You guys got a lucky break!" (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Taking the feelings of the team working on the game who believe that the finish line is just up ahead into consideration, I don’t know if that can be perceived as being entirely a positive thing! (laughs)

Quote
Yamashita:Well, it’s not something that a member of the team would have said. Of course it was... (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Now I get it… (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:(laughs)

Quote
Iwata:That’s one way of saving time! (laughs)

Quote
Yamashita:That’s good to hear! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:Really? There was more? (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:And that someone was Miyamoto-san once again! (laughs)

Quote
Miyamoto:If you use this chance to get familiar with the island in advance, you’ll enjoy the next game even more! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:(laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Shimamura:He'll read it and we'll be found out! (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:I see – “advice”. (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:He doesn’t pull any punches, does he? (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:(laughs)

Quote
Iwata:The dreaded progress report! (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:“Dreaded” is exactly the right word! (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:He makes you stand? (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Yamashita:Yes, he certainly does. (laughs)

Quote
Iwata:After you “were put through this”… (laughs)

Quote
Shimamura:If you looked at the screen, you could see that he wasn’t able to hold it steady at all. I’d never seen anyone shaking so bad before when playing the game so I said: “You’re shaking!” He replied: ”It’s nerves!” (laughs)

Quote
All:(laughter)

Quote
Iwata:(laughs) So did he get through that nerve-wracking presentation without Miyamoto-san giving him the thumbs down?

EA knows they messed up by making Dead Space: Extraction a rail shooter, otherwise they wouldn't be trying so hard to convince us it isn't one.

All this talk about "mature games" is just a distraction from their own incompetant decisions.

It was a bit disingenuous when they made that "lol no waggle" comment. Besides scrolling through the menus with waggle, the Burnout demo used it too. Putting your foot forward for the gas and brake is also replacing a digital button press with a predefined gesture.

I imagine voice commands will also be used in place of buttons. lol voice waggle.

Unless there's some hidden functionality to this device that somehow allows you to play traditional games with it, it's just a Balance Board on steroids.

I think what he meant was how each release in the series is so similar, not how many have been made.

I meant both. Four games in four years is a bit much. Nobody can out-whore Guitar Hero, though.

Looks like they're giving this game more development time than the others, and it shows. Six doctors with their own unique gameplay. I'm perfectly fine with that. That's all I wanted to see for the evolution of the series. I'll be buying this one for sure.

This is good. Trauma Center was starting to turn into the Guitar Hero of surgery games.

I suspected they were going to overhaul the series. Atlus sent me a survey a few months ago about the Trauma Center series and specifically asked why I didn't buy Under the Knife 2 and what I would like to change about the series.

There was one question in the survey that annoyed me, though. When they asked what platform I would like to see the next game on, the options were Wii, DS, and... 360? I swear, it's like third parties are looking for any excuse to not bring a game to a Nintendo system. I mean, the gameplay in TC is quite literally impossible with a standard controller. Why even make that an option? Oh well, at least they ended up making the right choice.

I can beat Super Reggie Man with motion controls. I demand respect.

The motion controls are fine. The only area I see it inferior to the Nes style controls is that the analog stick is used for digital movement. I can't always move the stick fast enough to register a dodge against Mr. Sandman's quick attacks.

Iwata, from today's Wii-no-ma announcement.

Quote
From that viewpoint, we at Nintendo have to reflect on domestic Wii software deployment in the former half of this year. Like what had been to be released in the former half of this year was postponed to the latter, we were not able to reach the original goal – to regularly make new proposals.

As for our deployment during the latter half of this year, I would like to announce on the other day as it is not today’s main topic. I would like to address that Nintendo recognize that we have been short of new proposals during the former half of this year, so far.

Iwata says right here that their games were delayed to the second half of the year. What comes out in the middle of the year?

MotionPlus.

Their games were delayed to incorporate MotionPlus. Like Malstrom has been saying since, forever.

I swear, half of this "Nintendo hates me they only make games for grandmas" talk would go away if people would actually listen to Malstrom and understood why Nintendo does what they do.

Cool. One preview I read of Virtua Tennis said that you needed to calibrate the controller after every point by pointing at the screen. Not a dealbreaker, but if the reviews end up being about the same for both games I might have to give Grand Slam Tennis the edge.

Wait, so the calibration happens automatically? You don't have to point at the screen or anything?
