Nintendo Gaming / RE:Four Swords DS
« on: July 22, 2004, 06:19:32 AM »
Damn you, Mario, you beat me to the post...

Well, something interesting about the small period in which they talked about Four Swords, is that he mentioned connectivity.  I'm not sure if this is DS-DS, or what, but that got my attention.

I also think it's kinda funny how he states that Wind Waker's graphical style (cel-shading) is harder to pull off then the new Zeldas more mature, realistic style.

Five whole mintues?  You're being real optimistic.

And after reading Ian's interesting post (which should go down in the Book of Best Posts on PGC) on arcade gaming, I've realized I'm actually quite scared not of the PSP, but of the PSP2 (you know it's coming, folks).  I mean, the way I see it, if PSP's already practically as powerful as the PS2 (and they still have more than half a year of development time to put some more  juice into it), at the pace at which technology is moving nowadays, PSP's successor will literally be as powerful as PS3.  Sure, people like Ian will basically reiterate what he's stated in his post, but other Sony fans will say "Oh yaaaaaay!  Now I can play at home aaaaaand at TV-less Grandma's house!"  Also, if someone can answer this question I've got...is it that the developers at Nintendo are incapable of developing better quality graphics, or they're just trying to stick to this stupid philosophy?  I mean, I get where they're heading with it, but they inevitably know: graphics sell.  IDK, kinda stupid on Nintendo's part.

i think they're both terrific platforms.  DS will attract Ninty fanboys as well as kids (oooh 2 screeens coool) and others who see the truth that it is it is the only system worth spending hours with, while sony will attract...every1 else.  sony, as some1 said earlier, is very cool nowadays, and ppl are into multifunctionality.  the main reason DS will whop PSP's hiney is because it has one more audience: parents.  no sensible parent will buy their kid a 300 dollar toy they're gonna leave on the bus.

I doubt that you will ba able to manually fly it between planets, there should be a hyperspace thing. Probably when flying above planets there should be a Golden-Sun type map, so that there are limited places to land. Also when in citites you should have a sort of 'Air Traffic Control' and you have to find your alloted landing pad. THis could be shown on the second screen!

Might be hard for the DS. Perhaps this should be  GC game.

You know, i think MS might do well to release a Flight Simulator DS...

Very similar to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone for PC.  You learnt the spell by near-perfectly tracing the symbol presented to you in a time limit.  It was quite tedious, actually...

Well...I agree, and disagree with KDR.  I think that the best way to do it is instead of having an Analog Stick (we're all afraid they'll break), replace the four-way D-Pad with a D-Pad in all directions.  You know...just a circular pad.  Speed variation can be accomplished (though not as comfortably as with an Analog Stick) with this method, and as far as I know, no one in the handheld gaming industry has tried it...I think it could work.

Possibly from GCAdvanced - that's where I got it from; they update at least four to five times a day with news tidbits not usually available on other places (even weekends; they had an interesting story yesterday involving Kirsten Dunst), tons of DS news there, not trying to advertise, but if you're crazy about DS, head there.

I believe someone at E3 told one of the uninvited ppl (who paid 300 smackeroonies and posted this online) that Metroid would be a launch title.  EA Sports has confirmed that Madden 2005 will also be a launch title...that's all I know for sure, though.

EDIT: In response to whoever said 180 dollars was unaffordable, I agree it cannot be considered affordable, but hard-core gamers (people who actually take the time to even find websites like PGC) will go for it.  Other, casual gamers, who play games for fun (the good ol' days...), will shun both the DS and PSP, not thinking about production cost, or marketing at all, and say "why the hell would i wanna buy teh diss oops ds or a piss-s-p i did teh it again psp when they cost more than teh consoles im gonna buy teh xbox whazaaaaaap."

Of course, casual gamers don't really talk like that.

I don't think the signal would interfere, but who knows?

They say, "Cell phones should remain off the entire flight.  Please turn off anything with an on-off switch (anything electronic) now.  You may turn them on again once we are in the air, at which point I will alert you that it is safe to turn on your electronic device.  Do not turn on cell phones or anything with an antenna till we are safely at the gate."

Wait, wait, wait...all this means no playing your DS on the airplane!  I mean, it's constantly transmitting signals looking for other people with DS's nearby...that could severely mess up the air traffic signals, right?  Damn...a plane with toddlers not knowing their DS's from the technical aspect...unless airlines discover handheld gaming quickly, and start saying, "No cell phones, walkie-talkies, DS's, or PSP's" on the PA system...wow, suddenly I see a whole new problem for the world.  Time to hatch more ingenious scheemes!

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Release?

Thou shalt not worry, Dedede has arrived.

Go to GameSpot, and watch the big Developer Interview thing they have going on.  Basically, this is what they said:

"We decided it would be nice to have backwards compatibility, as the past handhelds have.  But the new DS only plays GBA games, rather then GBC and GB games, making it very, very different from the Game Boy."

That sounded kind of stupid to me, but it's what they said.  And you'll notice with the Game Boy Player's release, Nintendo promoted "thousands more games available for play on the GameCube," while with the DS they're only promoting hundreds.  GBA games is all the backward compatibility we're getting, all, and it SUCKS.

Luigi's Mansion.  They had to keep it super secret so that other companies wouldn't steal their innovative "no replay value" design.  It seems to have worked because no one has!

I thought Luigi's Mansion had okay replay value...I borrowed it from my friend for three days, and was able to beat it on the second night.  All of a sudden I'm introduced to "Harder Better Super Mode" or whatever...I never played it, though, as I returned it the next day, but that's gotta count for something, no?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: DS = GBA 2?
« on: July 06, 2004, 10:13:22 AM »
Yeah...about that new name....for those who haven't seen the E3 press conference (I just saw it for the third time at Gamespot), when all the third parties were talking, one guy (I believe he was with Vivendi) actually called it the Nitro.  I think that pretty much wraps up our speculation.  It is not a Game Boy, but what we suspected for long: the Nitro.  Surprisingly though, he pronnounced it "Ny-troh."  I've been calling it "Ni-troh."  "Ni" as in the "N" word.

Actually, after seeing the Nitro/DS/whatever-the-hell-it's-supposed-to-be-called, I don't plan on purchasing the GBA2, unless it's like Nitro/DS/whatever-the-hell-it's-supposed-to-be-called compatible or something, because after viewing the conference, I finally believe Iwata.  GBA2's going to be nothing more than better specs, with something here, something there.   Nitro/DS/whatever-the-hell-it's-supposed-to-be-called and Revolution are literally the future.  So, raptor, get a Nitro/DS/whatever-the-hell-it's-supposed-to-be-called, and screw the GBA2 over, eh?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: State of 3rd Party Address
« on: July 05, 2004, 05:58:47 PM »
So we're talking bout third parties, are we....hmmm....well, I think that Ninty's done an okay job this time 'round, contrary to popular belief (I've always wanted to say that publicly).  It's all about relativity.  Generation wise, NES was still...you know, third parties were nearly non-existent (as far as I am aware)....SNES obviously had tremendous support....GB, meanwhile, is kicking the rest of the world's ass...GBC is released, more ass-kicking action baby....GBA (need I say more?)....N64 (that's right, I'm not going in order, sue me).  This is where we stop the trend.  Sony's obviously got the upper-hand already, a situation no third party's been in before; they stuck with Nintendo, they profited.  Sony was winning, so they profited with them - simple.  Then, like the Nintendo name did for generations, it was the Sony name that sold the first, say, 10,000 PS2s.  Then the people who realized that they were stupid, and they should have bought PS1's instead of N64's bought PS2s.  Then a larger base developed.  It's this kind of thing that's keeping Sony ahead...but relatively (there's that big word again), Nintendo's doing okay.  I mean, N64 plain SUCKED 3rd party wise (which is okay in my book).  If you take into account the GBA, I think Nintendo's still got a monopoly like it once did.  Why have Microsoft and, until recently, Sony neglected the handheld market?  They were scared.  Maybe the GC's not doing so hot, but the GBA is, and that's what matters, because either way, whether its a new one or not, NIntendo has some form of a monopoly, and that monopoly is what draws third party support.  You'll notice that the SP has begun selling more than the PS2, as it once did, months ago.  This, if you put aside handheld/home, goes to show you; Nintendo's winning as far as I'm concerned.  I don't care for third party, unless it's what drives the console, which is not what's happening.  Sony and MS are nearly driven completely by third parties, which is why it works for them.  But when Nintendo has better games than its third parties, why bother?  I think that's the way Iwata sees it (which is why rather than doing third parties, he plans on teaming up with them)  and that's how I see it.  First party drives the GBA, even though there aren't as many of them as there are third party games.

There you have it.  Why Sony and MS care abou third parties, and why I f'ing don't.  Also why, contrary to everything I just said, am very jealous of this third party support they're getting.  Damn them.

"That's a neat idea but I'm not sure how well it would work. First of all if you're playing in public you wouldn't want to be yelling into the mic the whole time."

Well, that's gonna be a problem with basically any game that uses voice recognition on the DS; I mean, handhelds ARE meant to be portable after all.

Sorry if that offended you, Ian, but I was only trying to say that Christians look at it like a real religious time.  You know; the stuff about the time to come together and stuff.  And man, I'm all for diversity of religion, but all Christmas is to me is a school-free time you get stuff.  And I'm totally okay with that

Nintendo Gaming / Wishlist Discussion
« on: June 30, 2004, 01:10:52 PM »
I know it's a while till Christmas, the estimated arrival time of the DS, but my sister (she's in love with the concept of Pac-Pix, even though she's not much of a gamer) and I have already begun planning.  You see, we're not Christian, so Christmas is simply a way for us to get a bit of loot out of our parents.  So they say about fifty smackeroonies each for Christmas - $100 (if we combine) right there.  Now, neither of our birthdays is for a while (both in June) after the DS's release, and we've already spent all our birthday money, so we can't factor that in.

Here're our balances if we factor in the Christmas loot (we don't get allowance, so I doubt we'll get much more money by DS-time):
ME - $250
HER - $210

So we're deciding to combine our money.  That's a total of $410.  We each want a DS, so estimating a DS costs about $150, we're down to $110.  So here is my wishlist:

2 DS - 150 each (we each want one)
MP:Hunters - 30
Pac-Pix - 30
New Super Mario Bros - 30
Zelda DS (if out by then) - 30
2 PictoChat - 15 each (we each want one; you know, to chat with each other)
2 Carrying Case - 10 each (we each want one)

Keep in mind all this is based on estimation.  I know many of you are counting on PictoChat coming bundled with the DS, so if we're lucky, we'll have a 30 dollar head-start on the Revolution, eh?  And if for some reason we need more money than my estimations call for, we've decided to skip on Mario and Zelda (actually, she decided...she can be quite...er..."persuasive," if you can call it that).  Overall, I think my estimations will get us through for a while.  Well, I'd like to hear what you think of my wishlist, and I'd love to hear about y'alls, so reply quick!

I was under the impression that Animal Crossing DS is the big sequel everyone was talking about.  Just like Anouma said that WW2 would utilize WW's engine, and it turned out to be the realistic Zelda, AC2 surprisingly may habe become AC-DS.  Maybe I was wrong...I don't know, Bill, did this interview take place before or after E3?

Actually, Bill, thanks for reminding me to mention that.  I was under the impression that the current Picto-Chat we know is not meant to utilize Wi-Fi.  What I was implying was that they'd better utilize Wi-Fi if they want anyone to buy it.  Another question...who is developing Picto-Chat?
