TalkBack / Nintendo Pushes for Trade Sanctions
« on: February 14, 2003, 08:57:55 AM »
I remember a while ago Nintendo was saying something about delaying their products in China until some sort of measure could be taken against the piracy.  I didn't know that they were going to be doing all this!

I really have to applaud Nintendo.  It's about time that they put their foot down and put an end to all of this.  I am more proud of Nintendo now than I have been in years.

TalkBack / Sega and Sammy to Merge in October
« on: February 13, 2003, 09:19:13 AM »
I have never played a Sammy game before....  BUT I LOVE THEM NOW!  It's now become thoroughly impossible for Microsoft to buy Sega.    That makes the Grey Ninja a very happy person.

TalkBack / Zelda Pre-Orders Look Strong

I haven't even pre-ordered yet....  This game is going to be HUGE!  I knew it would be big, but not THIS big.

I read a synopsis of the story once, but I can't remember where I saw it.  (The Magic Box maybe?)

It seems that a village is protected by a magical force, which must be replenished every year.  In a new year celebration or something like that, 4 young people are selected to retrieve some more Mana to replenish the village's barrier from a dangerous area outside the village's protection.  Things kind of go from there.

Mind you, it's been a long time since I read the synopsis, so I don't remember quite clearly... but it's sort of like that.  I just thought I would throw it in, since you sparked my memory of it, and everyone here seems ravenous for information.

Nintendo Gaming / Sega and Nintendo

Word has it that the new president of Sega loves Microsoft.  That (IMO) is a mortal sin, punishable by eternity in a small room with a big dude named Bubba, but that's beside the point.  It seems that Sega believes that former Dreamcast owners now own an Xbox, and nothing is shaking that belief.

The way I see it, we have two chances to convince Sega that they have fans in Nintendo's court.

1)  Buy the ridiculously hard to find Skies of Arcadia
2)  Buy everything that says Sonic on it.

Personally, I am guardedly optomistic.  I hated FF8 and 9, and from what I have seen, FFX isn't that great.  FFXI is of course, someone's sick idea of a joke, and FF-X2...  well...  I might prefer playing Tomb Raider (and I HATE Tomb Raider).  Basically, that covers all the recent Final Fantasies.  But to be fair, I haven't played FFX yet.  I am just going on word of mouth and plot details I have picked up here and there.

Final Fantasy IX I thought had some real potential.  The character and art design were excellent, the soundtrack was quite nice, and the combat system was awesome.  However, a boring plot and weak characters killed the game for me.  It became my second least favorite Final Fantasy after that.  (behind Mystic Quest, but after FF2j)

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has some real similarities with FF9, and I respect that.  I just hope it does it right this time around.  I want to see a classic Final Fantasy once more.

Heh.  Mouse Art.  My favorite.    (Actually I can't draw, I just like to submit a drawing that looks like it was made by a mentally challenged 3 year old once in a while)

Man....  I wish I had that much money.    But seriously, that's a pretty nice rig you have in the works there.  What are you going to put in for a video card?

General Chat / English to AOL Translator
« on: February 12, 2003, 01:42:54 PM »
yrrab, I know a few people on AOL who I have thought were very intelligent, and interesting to talk to.  Hell, one of my favorite sites used to be on AOL.

members.aol.com/mips36  (I still have the URL memorized).

However, the vast majority of AOL users that I know barely know how to use notepad, and come up with some of the most infuriatingly retarded ideas you have ever heard.  The reason being is all the TV commercials you see that say that AOL is the best, and show a bunch of your average lamers using a computer.  People who know dick all about computers see that and think AOL rules.  They come onto AOL, never realizing that there is an internet beyond that point.  Occasionally they get lost and seep into the real internet where there are people other than AOL users, and they start talking their AOL lingo, and get flamed big time.

Yes, I will admit it's wrong to categorize ALL AOL users into the retarded category, but I think that the general principle holds true, and will for years into the future.

3537
I think I read right here on PGC that the GCN version was going to be something special...  I seem to have lost the link though.  I am not sure if it was here or not, but I remember somewhere saying that the GCN version would be substantially upgraded from the Xbox version, and would put the PS2 version to shame.  (If you remember, the PS2 screens released so far have been FAR from impressive)

Nintendo Gaming / Heres an Idea Vivendi revisited
« on: February 12, 2003, 12:01:34 PM »
Heh.  Hero's Quest was my first PC game.

But I would have to say that I would very much like it if Sierra and Blizzard stayed where they belonged.  On the PC.  I am a console gamer, and I wouldn't trade my GameCube for the most powerful PC in the world (If I couldn't get another GameCube that is).  However, some genres are simply done better on the PC.  Blizzard and Sierra are two powerful PC developers, and they simply belong there.  I would also say that about Bungie.  They do not belong as a console developer either.

3539
It's got some good ideas in it, that resemble Earthbound 64 in a lot of ways, but it's just not my style.  I have never liked American RPGs that much, as I always preferred the Japanese RPGs.  I can definately live without this game.

So what are you building?  Mine is a hybrid of many computers I have had over the years.  It's got pieces from a 286, 486SX, P-120, and my Celeron 600.  Most of the parts come from my Celeron, so they are kind of outdated now...  The only really new thing in my computer right now is the memory.

3541
GameCube lacks a programmable T&L engine, so oftentimes the lighting might be a little lacking.  However, if you want to see some very nice dynamic lighting, check out Luigi's Mansion or Rogue Leader.  It may be a little troubling to code around it, but it certainly does not mean that the capability isn't there.

At any rate, I am fully expecting the GCN version of Splinter Cell to waste the Xbox version.  Let's see if time proves me right.

It's great watching how much of a stir this has caused in the forums. I've never seen people get so wild over being able to get a re-release of a game they already own.

I can't help but agree, even though I am one of the people going nuts over the game.  I haven't played the game in over a year though, and since the pre-order promotion, I have since vowed not to play the game on N64 until I get the GCN version.    I am really hyped about the Wind Waker, and I need to get my Zelda fix in.  Playing a slightly modified version of Ocarina of Time... well... the prospect is killing me.

Time to go play some more Majora's Mask I think...

In my opinion though, 1337 = h4x0r = AOL...  At any rate, I know I've seen people who type almost EXACTLY like that.  (unfortunately)

ECS K7S5A
Athlon XP 1800+
GeForce3 Ti200
256MB PC2100 DDR
SB Live!
40GB UDMA 100 7200RPM HDD

Not too shabby of a score for a PC so outdated by the standards imposed by the benchmarks.

This is hilarious.  It's a translator to translate English as any of us might use, into something that your average AOL user might say.
Go here for the translator

For example, here's the latest news report on the main page in AOL speak.

NWR Feedback / New Forums BUG DISCUSSION

Paladin, I have that same problem, but it seriously doesn't bother me much.  I know that you might think that other browsers suck compared to IE, but I am a full fledged convert.  I have found that Phoenix, although it is still an early beta, is faster than IE by far, and does some things in a MUCH better way than IE could ever hope for.  It's only a 6MB download, so you have nothing to lose by trying it.  The last milestone release handles PGC with no issues at all.

Give it a try, you might be surprised that some good was born out of the rotting shell that was Netscape.

I SO wish this applied to me.  I will be waiting for the 16th with as much patience as I can bear though.    I'll put my $20 down on it, pick up my copy of Ocarina of Time, and go home a happy man.  I can wait...  it's only 4 more days after all, and I of course already own the game for N64.  *sigh*

Nintendo Gaming / I just didn't understand.(A Zelda kiosk moment)
« on: February 11, 2003, 08:54:08 PM »
I began to understand when I saw the Nintendo e3 trailer posted on their site.  (The trailer is artwork.  You have to see it).

I fully understood when I watched PGC's E3 2002 DVD.  I saw just how well it all worked, and I was truly blown away by it.  After I saw that, all traces of sympathy I had for people whining about the "horrible" graphics was simply washed away.

Ok, it's killing me.  Chances that there are many hardcore PC gamers in this forum is pretty slight, but I thought I would post it here anyways, as it's the only forum I visit these days.  (I am not a hardcore PC Gamer myself, I just like to tweak my hardware).

I got over 800 points today when I ran the benchmark for the first time.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=17049

I promptly started overclocking everything in my computer after that, and got my score a few points shy of 1100, but unfortunately the futuremark servers were too busy for me to upload at that time.    I did save the scores though, thinking I could load them and submit them later.  HAH!  It's a feature that is missing from the free version, although the manual says no such thing.  (Yeah, I am a little ticked off about that).

Anyways, I am also having some huge problems with the demo in this version.  The first test runs fine, but the second part of the demo either crashes at the start or midway through.  It's really bothering me, as I love what I saw so far, and I would like to see the whole thing.  Has anyone else had this problem?

Hell, even if you haven't, post your score, no matter how pathetic.    I am curious what people around here have to show.

EDIT:  Managed to upload a new score.  200 points better than the one above.

TalkBack / Nintendo Makes Piracy Busts In China
« on: February 11, 2003, 08:42:48 PM »
I can't say that I was that happy when I heard that Nintendo busted Lik Sang a while back, but now that I know the story, I fully support them.  I am also quite happy to hear that Nintendo is finally kicking butt in China.
