TalkBack / Zelda Bonus Disc Details
« on: February 16, 2003, 01:29:23 PM »
I just got my copy of the bonsud disc today, and I am taking a short break from playing it.  I just got to Kakariko Village for the first time in Master Quest.  Man that game is hard.

Anyways, I just thought that I would mention that the Canadian version of the bonus disc DOES NOT have the Wind Waker teaser manual in it.  We get the instruction book with both French and English, and nothing more.  I am actually pretty glad about that, as I am a pretty spoiler sensitive person myself.  I must say that I loved the Zelda: Wind Waker and Hot Clips previews on the DVD though.  The hot clips commercial should be on TV or something.  It rocks.

4 weeks of shipping isn't something I am willing to put up with anyways.

I might just get it from EBGames if they are ever not backordered.

Ummm... where is this Wal-Mart located? A Canadian Walmart??? That would be amazing considering we can't even find it on the shelves in Vancouver.

Same story at my Canadian Walmart here in Lethbridge.

Nintendo Gaming / Eternal Darkness Request

Eternal Darkness isn't about a cheap scare though.  It's meant more for a lasting impression.  That's where it truly hit the nail on the head.  The game has caused obsessive compulsive behaviors in me, and that's also a good sign.  The study guide for my midterm I wrote on Thursday had all kinds of runes and spells scribbled on it by the end of the day.  They actually worked too.

I'll be at the Lethbridge Future Shop at 11AM tomorrow morning when it opens to pre-order my Zelda.    I called them and confirmed it a while back to make sure that I could get the disc, and they are indeed doing the pre-order promotion in Canada.  If I am eligible, I would be willing to bet that people living on the North Pole are eligible.

General Gaming / So..What's the deal with Rareware?
« on: February 15, 2003, 10:09:28 AM »
Are you sure?  I thought that they had retired on all the money that MS gave them?

And Rare officially canned Conker's Other Bad Fur Day a while back, so I wouldn't bet on it.  They might change their minds, but I doubt it.  The game really didn't sell that well...  (even though I loved the game)

Nintendo Gaming / More developers drop the GCN: and so what?
« on: February 15, 2003, 10:06:33 AM »
I was content with my N64.  I am genuinely happy with my GameCube.  It bothers me a little that some developers are dropping support, but to tell the truth, it doesn't concern me in the slightest.  The chances of me even playing a Sega Sports game, EA sports game, or a CodeMasters game is very remote.  They just aren't the type of games I normally play.

We have gained Square-Enix, Capcom, and Silicon Knights.  That's plenty good enough for me.  This upcoming year, I am already saving pennies for all the games I want.  There are just too many to buy all the ones I like.  To me, that is a very good sign.

Actually, Eternal Darkness is my #3 game.  Chrono Trigger being #2, and Xenogears being #1.  (Metal Gear Solid is #4, and Final Fantasy VI is #5)  I simply cannot describe the respect I have for the game.

But about the scene, since the topic keeps popping up....  I actually screamed the first time I saw it.  The second time I still jumped, even though I had prepared myself for it.  Two of the sanity effects got me REALLY good too...

Rare isn't even a shadow of their former selves.  The founders, and the majority of the employees are now gone.  They still have a few franchises, and that's about it.  IIRC, here's the lineup:

GBA:
Diddy Kong Pilot
Sabrewulf

Xbox:
Kameo
Perfect Dark 0

Somehow I think I am missing a whole lot of games, but I seriously can't be arsed to figure out which ones.  I probably won't buy any GBA games, and I could seriously care less about the Xbox ones.

Nintendo Gaming / Incoming SEGA GCN announcement!
« on: February 15, 2003, 02:38:02 AM »
Considering that most 1st party games go for like $60 around here, I'm not really getting that great of a deal buying online.  DVDBoxOffice is in fact probably where I will end up buying the game in the end, but I am still bitter about it, and I think I have a right to be.  Being forced to buy a game online because the retailers aren't getting any copies of the game is simply inexcusable.  Besides, most online retailers are sold out anyways.

Thanks for your help though.  I have calmed myself down a little now, and I am in the mood to be reasonable.    Just had to get that rant out of my system.  (Although I probably should send Sega another rant about their customer service)

I LIVE IN FREAKING CANADA!

Paying $20+ to have a game shipped to me that should be available in stores is simply lunacy.  I think I will end up paying inflated prices for shipping, but it is NOT what I want to be doing.  I have no gripes with Sega, at least not before they decided that Lethbridge wasn't worthy of recieving their games.  You may be willing to spend 1/3 the costs of the game itself on shipping, but I tend to balk at that, as I am starving to death already.  Give me one good reason why I shouldn't be mad at Sega.

PS:  I also am not a fan of their customer service.  They don't even have the courtesy to write you back.

Well, no question you will kill my score.  I have some tweaking yet to do, and I am determined to get it above 1100 points, so as soon as I have some free time, I will be doing that.  I am guessing that with your GF4 Ti, you will probably get between 1500 and 2000 points though.  It seems to be the norm from most people I know.

I just sent Sega an email.  I am actually very displeased with them at this moment in time, as I cannot find a copy of Skies of Arcadia anywhere around here in spite of trying my hardest.  I just thought I would share the email here.  What possible good does it do me if they make games for the GameCube but don't sell them?  Buying games online is NOT something I like to do.

Somehow I get the impression that Sega hates making money.  Why else would they refuse to supply enough copies of Skies of Arcadia to cover all of North America?  I haven't seen a single copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends in my area (Lethbridge, Alberta), and I know that I am not the only one with this problem.  EBGames is sold out and copies are on backorder, and none of the stores in my area have even heard of the game.

If the sales of Skies of Arcadia Legends is supposed to determine the chances of a sequel, then I guess you guys don't want to make a sequel too badly, as it seems that YOU REFUSE TO SELL THE GAME TO ME!

I will agree that there are a serious lack of variety in the monsters in the game, but I will NOT agree that the sanity effects were too gimmicky or that they lost their effect.

I don't want to discuss too much of what I mean here, as I would consider them to be spoilers, but in my mind, the sanity effects are CENTRAL to the storyline.  Think about Alex's tale sometime, and exactly what happened as the night went on, and I think you will catch my drift.  It's in the subtleties that the game is truly powerful.  It's just a real pity that people don't pay attention to subtleness anymore.  It's a lost art.  Things in the game actually did happen in history.  The attention to detail, and the atmosphere in the game were simply perfect.  It's true that the game was lacking in some areas, and it isn't deserving of a perfect score, but to me, that is irrelevant.  It is still my favorite game on GameCube.

Nintendo Gaming / Rumour: Chrono Trigger 2 & Chrono Break?

Thing is, Square isn't anymore the company I used to know back when Chrono Trigger and all those lovely Rpgs they released for the Psx. To me, Square isn't that good anymore, they started loosing its magic back when they released Final Fantasy 8, which was a big disappointment, Final Fantasy 9 sucked horribly and Chrono Cross was also disappointing. The last game they managed to pull out greatly was Vagrant Story, a masterpiece in my opinion and my second favorite Rpg of all times (first one is Chrono Trigger)
They're much too busy lately milking the Final Fantasy series over and over or coming up with a bunch of not-so-good titles like Kingdom Hearts without paying any atention to other classics like the Mana series or any other for that matter. A sequel to Chrono Trigger, or whatever? I really doubt it'll be as great as Chrono Trigger, I've noticed that most Rpgs released on this generation aren't nearly as great as those from the SNES and PSX. Too much attention to mediocre teenager love sub-stories between the main characters of a game (FFX comes to mind) and little to none attention to make a truly epic Rpg.

Try playing Xenogears sometime.  Vagrant Story and Chrono Trigger are both great games, and Chrono Trigger was my favorite game in the world for 5 years.  Until the day I played Xenogears to be honest.  It's really THAT good of a game.

But yes, I agree that Square is not what they used to be.  I am hoping that Enix and Nintendo's influence on them can bring them back though.

Just to clear something up.

The only official information on Chrono Break to this point is this.  Square filed a trademark on the name.  It's not confirmed to be in development for PS2, GBA, GCN, or Xbox.  It's not a big change to go from PS2 to GBA, as none of us actually know what it is.  For all we know, it could be a poyozzo doll that breaks real easy.

Heh.  That's alright.  I have to actually get around to doing it anyways, and that takes a great deal of time.  I just thought I might sit down with an OpenGL book over reading week, and figure out some cool stuff on my own outside of class.  But right now I am sort of off on a tangent trying to build a physics engine for a flight simulator anyway.    I just downloaded the NACA TR-824 pdf, and I am kind of enthused about that....  But if you did do that for me, well....  I would be eternally in your debt.

Btw, I have already ripped myself a couple of tracks from Eternal Darkness from when I had the game.  I have Maximillian, Karim, and Pious' music already ripped.  If you use any instant messengers, let me know, and I can share them with you.

If it is real, then I will personally send Iwata-sama a love letter.  A move of that magnitude would demand no less.  Alas, the PS2 seems to be the one that gets all the RPG support.    A TRUE sequel to Chrono Trigger is what I have been waiting for since I played the original all those long years ago.  Let's just hope that this time they can bring back the Dragon Quest guys who made the game so great.

I don't really plan on getting the broadband adaptor anytime soon, but if I ever did, I would probably just feed the connection through my PC.  From there I could host games anywhere in the world through Virtual Private Networking.  (remote LAN access).  Hell, I was playing Warcraft 3 the other day with that exact technique.

I am kind of dubious about this as well...  but what the heck.  I haven't gone overboard hyping a rumor in a while.  Hows about a new Shining Force game, or a sequel to Skies of Arcadia?  Wouldn't that just make everyone crap their pants?

Yep.

Anyways, yes I would have to say that I prefer Eternal Darkness to Resident Evil.  But keep in mind that the games are NOTHING alike.  I am a Resident Evil fan, but I prefer Eternal Darkness, as the style and atmosphere in the game is simply perfect.  It will be my model of a perfectly constructed game for years to come.  If you haven't tried it yet, you are doing yourself a major disservice.
