Nintendo Gaming / Intrested in FF:CC
« on: February 25, 2003, 04:26:18 PM »
Since someone asked, I thought I would give a list of my favorite Final Fantasy games, in order.

1)  Final Fantasy VI/IV  (Tie for first place)
2)  Final Fantasy Tactics
3)  Final Fantasy VII
4)  Final Fantasy I
5)  Final Fantasy V
6)  Final Fantasy IIIj
7)  Final Fantasy VIII
8)  Final Fantasy IIj
9)  Final Fantasy IX
10)  Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

AlphaDragoon, it would seem that you and I are wishing for exact opposites in Crystal Chronicle.  I hope that through some miraculous act we are both pleased with the end result, but I really have to shake my head at your taste.  There's just no accounting for it.

As for Secret of Mana on GameCube, word has it that Brownie Brown (makers of Seiken Densetsu (Mana)) series are working on a GameCube game.  Maybe we will see something at E3?

It could be faked.  I am not saying it is, but I am allowing for the possibility.

Bill, 1player control doesn't usually have a split screen.

TalkBack / Analysts Recommend Nintendo Turn Third-Party

Sorry, I haven't really followed this thread too much, as I am sure that there are things being said in here that I violently disagree with, and I am not in the mood to have an in depth discussion of the subject right now.  Maybe after a while.

Anyways, commenting on the article itself, I found it quite interesting that they praised Xbox for having such a great online strategy, while they implied Nintendo was doomed because they had no real online plans.  They never thought to consider that maybe Nintendo has a better sense of what gamers want than they do.

Here is a poll on GameFAQs about how many gamers can't live without online games.  Almost 46000 people voted.  Also keep in mind that every one of these people has internet access of some sort.
http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.asp?poll=1170

Is online gaming really a sure thing at this point in time?  Maybe.  You tell me.

Yeah, I want to hear some more out of Louie too.  His stuff used to be one of the best reasons to come to this site.  (Other than the great content of course)

Heh.  used up your bandwidth eh?  I can host them for you for a while if you would like.  My msn is ninjacommander@hotmail.com.  Email them to me or IM me, and I'll host them for you.  Personally though, I liked the box art.  It wasn't anything fancy, but it was a real DVD case, and packaged nicely.

Take a close look at the details and facial expressions in the two versions.  The difference is very clear even on my lowly TV.  I can easily make out details and expressions I only remember as blurs on the N64.

Xbox can't be coming back in Japan, as they were never popular in Japan.  And one week doesn't really mark a bigtime comeback.  Especially in the light of the fact that January/February are the slowest months of the year in terms of console sales.

Well, I don't know how old you would consider me, but I feel really old.  (21 years)

I own 5 GameCube games.
-Rogue Leader
-Eternal Darkness
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Resident Evil 0
-Metroid Prime

I am currently desperately trying to find Skies of Arcadia, and I have Zelda pre-ordered.  If I had the money, I would buy Animal Crossing and Resident Evil as well.

Last console chart shows GameCube outselling Xbox 2:1, and 5:1 for 2003.  That's Feb 3 - 9.

Nintendo Gaming / Modern GameCube games Need Difficulty Settings
« on: February 24, 2003, 03:24:51 PM »
I don't think it's so much that the games have gotten easier, so much as we have gotten better at them.  I played SMB until I was practically bleeding trying to finish the game.  It took me forever to finally finish it.  Nowdays I can play the game without issue, and most games like it that were considered difficult back in the day.

That being said, a modern game is much more intense.  The levels start out easier, and give you a nice gradual learning curve so that the game gets a lot harder the more you play.  A lot of older games were just survival matches that made it so that the enemies got quicker as time went on, but no other real challenges.

I am curious about what developer you work for though.

I don't hate xbox. I like xbox, but I love gamecube a lot more. I'm working with a dev called void software. We're doing our first major project for pc and xbox, but I can't tell you more since it's tied up with a few nda's with the publishers.

Glad to hear that then.  With me it would be painful to go to work each day knowing that I am fueling a system which I loathe...  (Kind of being like a guard at a concentration camp)

But I am quite happy for you knowing that you don't mind the work you do.  You will have to let me know when your game is closer to completion, as I want to check it out.

The majority of the problem is my TV.  The jack in the back is totally messed, and doesn't like any cord that much.  The one I have in it right now is the only one that gives me a semblance of a good picture.  If I fight with it long enough though, I can get a decent picture for about 30 minutes without error.

I am a little concerned about the comment at the bottom of this news story...  I was an Engineering student for one year, and one year only.  I know exactly just how hard it is.  In a class of about 35 people, I was one of about 5 people who passed all the classes.  However, the extreme workload and my low GPA at the end of that year caused me to turn my back on Engineering, and I am a Computer Science major now.

I have always thought it would be nice to take a few courses at Digipen though, even before I decided to drop Engineering.  I would be interested in reading that article if I wasn't so bloody broke right now.

But I am a far better programmer than I ever was as an Engineer, so I am thinking that maybe one day I will be able to see those people there on the same level.  *sigh*

Just a short description of how my video works....  I have a long RCA cable I use as an extension, so that my video output can reach my VCR.  My VCR is an old piece of crap that doesn't really work anymore.  Its single purpose in life is to provide picture for my GameCube and N64.  From there, a coaxial cable runs to my TV.  The TV is ok, but I can't adjust the brightness, and it's dark as hell.  A quirk with it though is that unless the cable going into it is aligned just right, and the moon is full, and the planets are in alignment, there is just no way in hell I can get decent picture.  There is always a whole bunch of interference on the screen.

It's just something I have learned to live with.  I do mean to buy a VGA box someday though, as my monitor is pretty decent.

The idea is still around, but dormant.  Maybe with Mother 3 and Animal Crossing 2 that will change?

I am a 21 year old, and a gamer for 14 years, and that goes for me too.  The day Nintendo goes is the day I will no longer be a gamer.  I seriously don't know what I would do with myself if that were to happen.  Right now my whole goal in life is to get a job developing games on a Nintendo system.

Forgot to mention.  Halo is coming out for PC this summer.  How much you want to bet it will be a good 10X better than the Xbox version?

I am actually not that interested in it though.  I won't be getting a copy anymore than I will be buying GTA Vice City when it comes out for PC.

General Gaming / What will be at E3?

Mario Kart, Pokemon, and Pikmin 2 are almost guaranteed.

There will probably be something new from Square-Enix, there might be that long lost Konami support everyone has been bitching about, and Nintendo will probably have some 1st and 2nd party RPGs to show off.

Guys, just click on the link to learn about the story if you don't know it already.  There's no need to speculate.

The 3 Zelda games were simply god-awful, and make me shiver just to think about them.  They are 2D, but barely.  They have horrible FMV, horrible voice acting, and the in-game graphics are simply terrible.  Hit detection is next to zero, and the games aren't very fun.

WTF is this bloody obsession with bump mapping?   It's no harder to implement on a GameCube than on a PC.  And there are just as many GameCube games that use it as PC games.

Rogue Leader is definately the most difficult challenge on GameCube.  It was all I could do to get silvers on every stage.  I have a few golds, but not even half the levels.  And I won Golds in every level of Rogue Squadron, so I am no newbie to the genre.  It's just insanely hard.

Try playing Battlefield 1942 on PC.  You will quickly forget about Halo.
