Ok, I simply HAVE to revive this thread.  It seems that footage of his "brother" has been found.

Personally, I would just go with a cheaper one, unless you have some good hardware to hook it up to that supports all the nice stuff that DVD players have to offer.  I don't really know that much about standalone DVD players though, as I use a DVD-ROM for my DVD viewing purposes.

General Chat / I just got a Voodoo 2!
« on: May 18, 2003, 05:09:27 PM »
Alright, I am sure you are all wondering why I am thrilled to have just paid real money for a 5 year old video card.  It's a long story, so I should probably start from the beginning.

In the old days, 3dfx cards (Voodoo) were the best around.  They had their own API (Glide), and they were fast and looked great.  My first "real" 3D accelerator was a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, as I was broke, and not too into PC gaming.  However, the card performed marvelously.  I could play Wing Commander Prophecy in all its Glide splendor, and Need For Speed High Stakes ran with a beauty and a silky smoothness like you wouldn't believe.  My Pentium 120 was finally able to run new games at 60fps, and look just as good as the ultra-modern Pentium IIs.    I would regularly be able to play games that would list a Pentium 166 or even a 233 as a minimum system requirement.

However, my mother's computer was a storebought computer while my own was home-made.  Needless to say, my computer ran a fair bit better, but it seemed that her computer was a certified lemon.  It would crash regularly, and the problem wasn't only the newfangled Windows 95 that was installed on it.  After months of trying to track down the bug, I eventually found that her computer's stability was greatly increased with my Voodoo 3 card installed.  With great reluctance, I offered her a chance to trade video cards.  I would take her nVidia TNT, and she would get my Voodoo 3.  I did get a fee for it, in the form of more memory, and an upgraded hard drive, but I always missed my Voodoo 3.  I was no longer able to use glide, and the TNT just wasn't very fast.

As time went on, new technology came out, and my computer evolved into a celeron 600, and I came across a GeForce 3 when the card came out.  In spite of the clear performance gain that I had over my computer as it was in the old days, I still missed my Voodoo 3.  Not being able to use glide still pained me, and wrappers just didn't do it justice.  My computer evolved further, and I learned to live without glide.

However, a friend of mine recently lost his computer due to a motherboard failure, and bought an entirely new one from the store.  Knowing that he had a Voodoo 2 card in his computer, I jumped at the chance to buy it off him.  So, $20 poorer, I plugged in my "new" video card, and saw the 3dfx logo pop up on my screen for the first time in years.  Not having any of my old glide games installed, I was playing Gran Turismo 2 with Lewpy's glide GPU plugin.  The smoothness and the beauty of the game running on the Voodoo2 truly does 3dfx justice.  I did experience a few frame drops, but I think that my GeForce 3 has been retired from PSX emulation in favor of a 5 year old video card.    I may buy another Voodoo 2 off ebay at some point, and link the two in SLI, but right now I am just happy to have glide support again.  The API may be long dead and buried, but it's still loved by all of 3dfx's fans, and a testament to that may be found when I went out to seek Windows XP voodoo drivers.  So many coders had written Voodoo drivers for Windows XP, and so many people had downloaded each and every one that it brought a tear to my eye.

Anyways, a toast to 3dfx!  May their memory live on forever.

yeah, but that's why you would put an http:// in front of it.

General Chat / Video Games are Incredibly Stupid!
« on: May 18, 2003, 03:55:07 PM »
It was too long for me to read.  I have no problems reading long articles if I think that I will get something out of them, but this one was long, and I knew it would be horribly written and based on stupidity more than anything.

Suffice to say that the title convinced me that GameFreak was right.  Anyone that has such a thesis on an essay should know that they are wrong before they start.

Yeah, I'm sorry for the hardware discussion as well.  I suppose that I am one of the people who started it...  I just get irritated when someone says something as wrong as:  "The GameCube can't do FSAA because it's not nearly as powerful as the Xbox".  Anyways, I will drop it here, and leave boggy with his faith that more mips performance means a faster system.

Anyways, I have been playing the MGS VR missions for the last couple of days.  I am getting VERY good at the ninja levels.    I wonder if maybe MGS: TTS will have an enhanced version of the VR missions that is a little more... "fun"?

In Canada, the French speakers demanded that every video game in our country be packaged with french instruction manuals.  It's a royal pain in the ass for all concerned though, as the games are still in english, it's just the instructions that are in french.  I wouldn't have a problem with having instructions in french, if it didn't delay game releases.  It just seems pointless to me to have to wait a few extra days for a trivial addition to the game that doesn't really help french speakers out a lot.

Anyways, I'm sure you could find scans of some Canadian video game instruction manuals, as they will be delivered in both french and english, and often have subtle differences from the American versions.  A good example might actually be the cover art for the Zelda: OoT bonus disc for GameCube.  The covers of the American and Canadian discs were actually pretty different in appearance IIRC, because of the Canadian requirement of packaging products in French and English.  I am not aware of a single Canadian game that has a language selector for french/english though.  I think you would have to find the PAL version of a game to do that.

I don't seem to recall disagreeing with you when you said the textures in MGS: TS are awful, and judging from what I have seen, the games are about equal in texturing right now.

HK has said that there aren't many changes; they're mostly details in the graphics...which seems a bit odd. There's a huge potential to make a different game experience.

The game features all the gameplay details that you know from MGS2, but with the story of MGS.  Play MGS2, but imagine you are playing MGS.  That's what they are creating.

TalkBack / E3 is Over Now!

I just checked out the E3insider website posted in the article.  I have never seen a gaming website SO out of touch with what gamers are.  It's good for a laugh if nothing else.  The polls that they have there are the greatest though.  Some of the questions they ask are just plain retarded.  It also came as no surprise that the majority of visitors play Xbox the most...

No, actually the worst thing about that is that 2 out of 3 of your "big games" are PC ports, and one of those is older than the hills.  Runner up would be that only one of those is exclusive, and likely will likely be ported to PC in a nicer package anyways.

General Chat / The Matrix Reloaded......Anyone seen it?
« on: May 17, 2003, 12:22:40 PM »
It wasn't as good as the first movie.  And I thought the digital orgasm was the highlight of the movie.    I don't care what you guys say.    I saw that and I was like:  "WHOA!!!  I have GOT to program some of that cake!"

I really think that what doomed this movie though was all the plot-holes that carried over from the first movie.  It just wasn't well thought out, and since they are building on that... it's starting to crumble.  Things that seem immediately obvious to me just don't happen in The Matrix.  I can go into detail on many things about it that bother me, but I don't really feel like it right now.

I thought it was a good movie and worth a watch, but it just wasn't a classic.  I do want to see the last movie though.

It's called subpixel anti-aliasing, and it means that the frame is rendered at a very high resolution (say, 1600x1200) in the frame buffer, but then it is, for want of a better word, squished down to 640x480. There is no MAGICAL way to do this on the GCN, you NEED a lot of VRAM. There are, however, other types of AA (interlaced, for example) and there are ways it can appear to have AA (blurred screen etc.).

Oh lordy.  Give a man a computer, and he thinks he knows everything.  There are many different forms of AA, that is true.  However, given that a TV screen can't even do 640x480, I don't think that any one way will really show results any better than any other.  Check out some screenshots of Silent Hill 3 on PS2.  Flipper offers 7 sample AA in hardware, and the number of samples is adjustable.  That anti-aliasing works very well, and I have no problem with it.  End of story.

But, XBox (as much as we don't want to admit it) is CERTAINLY the most powerful of the three consoles out right now. There are things that developers can do with its Pixel Shaders that the other consoles can't get close to (even the PS2, with VU0 and VU1).

Name something only possible with pixel and vertex shaders.  You are just talking out of your ass.  I remember back when Xbox fanboys kept on saying that Fur Shading wasn't possible on the GameCube.  Factor 5 proved them wrong with their launch title, Rogue Leader, and Rare later on used Fur Shading extensively in Star Fox Adventures.

As for the Xbox being SO much more powerful, you really have no freaking clue what you are talking about.  (Which is becoming more and more obvious with every post).  These guys study PC hardware for a living.  They know more about hardware than you or me, and they pretty much agree with what I say.  They had to make a lot of guesswork on the GameCube's part, as Nintendo closely guards their specs, and no developers are allowed to release benchmarks.  In the end, they said that the Xbox was more powerful, but the difference was marginal, and there really wasn't anything on Xbox that couldn't be done on GameCube.

Whatever.

Back to MGS. Sorry about this folks.

Best idea I have heard yet.  Thanks everyone else who told boggy that he was wrong, but I just had to get my own spin in here as well.   But this great topic is going to be locked soon if we don't get back on topic.  Boggy, just admit you are wrong, and we can get on with our discussion.  We will all think much better of you if you simply admit that you were in error, as you are simply fighting a losing battle here.

Anyways, I made a recording of my voice earlier today.    What do you guys think?

Isn't that supposed to make a hyperlink out of the urls that are posted in plain form in a post?  If so...  why isn't it working, and is there an ETA on that?    I realize it's post-E3 madness still, and I am not pushing or anything, I am just curious.

Most people I know think that Nintendo kicked butt at E3 this year.  I tend to agree.  We got Star Fox, Metal Gear, Mario Kart, a bit of Killer7 and Resident Evil, Pikmin 2, Rogue Squadron 3, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles!

I think that next year you all should stop hyping things so much if you can't accept that it's not going to be all that you hyped.

At least this time around the people on foot will have more structures and barriers to seek cover behind. That was not the case in the last games very open deathmatch areas. You had to constantly watch the sky and the ground at the same time or you would either get divebombed by an arwing or turned into roadkill by the landmaster.

Actually, I found that the multiplayer on the N64 was like Rock Paper Scissors.

Landmaster could cream an Arwing like you wouldn't believe.
Foot Soldiers could kill a Landmaster in seconds.
An Arwing can kill someone on foot in a heartbeat.

boggy, please use some fact in your arguments.  In almost all accounts, the GCN is every bit as powerful as the Xbox.  The difference between the two is marginal, whatever hype you might have heard.  FSAA is very possible on GameCube, ok?  I suggest you go play some Rogue Leader and see for yourself.  Then go play some Shrek on Xbox.

And there is absolutely no reason why Twin Snakes wouldn't be as good as Metal Gear Solid 1, ok?  Keep such fanboyish thoughts to yourself.

As for the graphics in the MGS3 trailer, yes, they are stylish, they do the job just fine.  But look at the textures.

I want to make sure that EVERYONE buys this game.  It will increase the chances of more Fire Emblem games making it over here, and it will really boost the chances that there will be a Fire Emblem GCN.
