Nintendo Gaming / FPS Control Woes
« on: May 26, 2003, 03:16:44 PM »
Well, I don't know about you guys, but my left hand is trained to handle movement, while my right is for doing stuff. I tried that config once in a game... (Turok maybe?) but it annoyed the hell out of me, because I couldn't move very well.

PC is without a doubt the best system for FPS and RTS, simply because of the mouse and keyboard combination.

For consoles though, I must say that the N64 did the job rather well, as games such as Goldeneye and Perfect Dark proved.  I did find that I got used to Agent Under Fire without much difficulty on GameCube though.

Actually, you know you have a point there... it takes 2 people to hold z on all 4 controllers.

To tell the truth, I am not much of a GBA player.  I suppose I should look into the RPGs on the system at some point though.    I am not really a fan of Lufia though, but I will keep an eye on this game.

General Gaming / Gran Truismo 4 graphics

The problem isn't the hardware on the PS2.  It's the architecture.  The machine is powerful enough to stand toe to toe with the Xbox and GameCube, but getting that much power out of the machine is exceptionally difficult, and that's why the graphics commonly don't look as good as your average GameCube or Xbox game.

Gran Turismo is a flagship Playstation title though.  Sony goes through great effort to ensure that the graphics are as good as can be.  I am still stunned by some of the miracles that they pulled off in Gran Turismo 2.  In an emulator, the game looks almost like an average PS2 game.

I would buy it to compliment my PC.  Not other consoles.  But I would email Nintendo every day until they changed their policies.

Btw, polls aren't allowed in this forum in any way, shape or form.

Then te GBA is great for this. I mean, if YOU had the Codec then you really WOULD have to look to down at it.

If you haven't played the game, then you wouldn't know how it is... It would be ok for the Soliton Radar (ala Splinter Cell), but the codec scenes feature GREAT voice acting, and the GBA's speaker wouldn't do it justice.  Other than that, I wouldn't have a problem having it on the GBA.  Perhaps the audio can be done on the GameCube though, and the pictures on the GBA.  Since they are keeping the sprites on the codec scenes rather than moving to 3D, that would be reasonable.

Grey Ninja, is the Voodoo really better than my GeForce3 for PSX emulator?  Or only for certain games?

A Voodoo card is better overall I think.  The framerate is better and more constant than with a GeForce card.  I can't do 2XSAI (plugin doesn't implement it... yet) or FSAA (not implemented on Voodoo cards until Voodoo4) on my Voodoo card, but in some ways, that's a good thing.  2D games look fantastic anyways, even without 2XSAI, and I don't really care about jaggies anyways.  I would rather have the extra framerate.  The FMV also looks better on a Voodoo.

The most challenging game to emulate though, is of course Xenogears.  It's a little TOO demanding for the Voodoo2, and I still have to run that with my GeForce3.  The framebuffer effects are too slow on my Voodoo2, and the game pushes an insane amount of polygons.

The games I primarilly tested though, were Gran Turismo 2 (solid 60fps), Final Fantasy Origins (solid 60fps), and Breath of Fire 3 (solid 60fps)

All tested games ran just fine, and looked great.  The extra smoothness I got from playing it with Glide made it worth the small drop in image quality moving from the OpenGL plugin.

Also, the reason I bought a TNT2 Ultra over a Voodoo3 was because every single review I read said the TNT2 owned, and the Voodoo3 was merely good.

Bah.  They said the same thing about Lost Kingdoms.

I loved my Voodoo3, as well as many other people.  I would trade a TNT2 for a Voodoo3 any day of the week.  The card was just something special.  Only someone who worked with it for a long period of time before switching to nVidia would understand though...

General Chat / nVidia vs ATI
« on: May 25, 2003, 02:29:17 PM »
Actually GameFreak, I am of the opinion that Radeon cards were always pretty good.  The Radeon 8500 was technically superior to the nVidia cards of the day (GeForce 3), but was hampered by poor drivers.  The recent ATI drivers however, have gotten REALLY good.  It's really the better driver support that is carrying ATI so far these days I think.

As for the acquisition of ArtX, I realize that was a great step for ATI, but I am not really familiar with the details of that.  I would have liked some of the Radeon features to be incorporated into Flipper though, such as a programmable T&L engine.

General Chat / Anime - Japanese vs English
« on: May 25, 2003, 02:24:00 PM »
I have the dubbed Princess Mononoke, and it's REALLY good.  Not having seen the subbed version though, I don't know if the translation was as true as it could have been.  I have seen both the dubbed and the subbed Spirited Away, and IMO, either version is just as good.

The voice acting in both the English and Japanese versions of these movies are top notch though.  I don't think I can really choose between them.  I would pick the English versions though, simply so that you can concentrate more on the artwork.

There are laws that permit you to do so though, even if Nintendo doesn't like it.  One of the problems though, is that you must make a backup on the same medium as the original.  Which means that backing up your cart onto your hard drive... could theoretically be described as illegal, although it's unlikely you would EVER get charged for doing so, if you didn't distribute it.

I was told otherwise....  but I guess that neither of us can prove it.

However, it should be mentioned that the MQ ROM does have all the GameCube graphics in it regarding the controls on the top of the screen.  Things such as... the L button instead of the Z button...

Nintendo Gaming / Why don't Nintendo fans like Fighting Games?
« on: May 25, 2003, 02:14:21 PM »
The last fighting game (and I think the only one...) I bought was Killer Instinct on SNES, and then only because it was a really good deal.  It's not that I don't like fighting games, as I do play a good amount of Tekken 3, Soul Edge, SSBM, and a few others... it's just that I am not very good at them, and they don't hold my interest for long.  I have been giving serious thought to getting Soul Calibur II, as it reminds me a little of Killer Instinct, and is obviously an exceptional fighting game.  I just like the style I guess.

The GBA's Direct Sound unit is more than capable of handling the voice acting.  However....  the GBA's speaker is not.  The speaker is pretty much an attrocity in the face of good sound.

2441
You know what?  You are right... maybe there is something more to the "gameplay isn't what sells the game" argument about GTA3.    It took 3 games for it to become "cool".

2442
I would buy it.    But like you say, it's completely impractical.

I meant GTA1.    GTA3 was vastly superior as it was in 3D, and still worked.

LMFAO!!!!  That's totally awesome.  As GameFreak said though, one German forum is down, so it doesn't work that well, but I am assuming that it's an endless loop in the end.

Or if you consider the fact that Skies of Arcadia still isn't available anywhere around here, and I can get it with shipping for about the price that I would pay buying it over the counter, it starts to look like a really freaking good deal.

Or when you consider that the average used game online runs for about $15, and the local pawn shops sell them for about $40, it REALLY starts to look good if you need to fill out your collection of older games.

2447
Well, I know that kenjutsu means swordplay, and many sword based martial arts will have "ken" as part of the name.  I am not sure what the word for fist is though, so it's entirely possible that "ken" could also be used for fist.

It does seem that the official translation agrees with me though.

I'm not disputing that GameFreak.  The gameplay was something completely new and innovative when first introduced.  It sold for that reason.  But it became massively big because of the violence and generally the stuff about the game I find distasteful.

Nintendo Gaming / Final Fantasy
« on: May 24, 2003, 05:45:36 PM »
You know what?  I constantly hear people around here saying that they might be interested in purchasing a copy of Pacman GCN/Tetra's Trackers/4 Swords GCN if they were priced appropriately, as the graphics are too simple, and the gameplay doesn't look deep enough to warrant full price.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is everything those games are and more.  The graphics are superb, it's got a fairly deep story, and the gameplay seems fairly complex.  It takes full advantage of both the GBA and the GCN.  Contrary to Pacman or Tetra's Trackers, the game also features a great single player campaign that requires no GBA.

I'm still seriously confused about why Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles isn't accepted, simply because it has an OPTION for 4 player cooperative play via GBA.  It's the ultimate connectivity game, and people don't like it because...  it features connectivity.

Please, just give some thought to this.  Being angry because it's innovative is not a good thing.  Everyone who has PLAYED the game says that they can't see it working without the GBAs in multiplayer.  I think that's a good thing, as it shows that gaming is advancing.  (no pun intended.  )

2450
I agree with Mouse Clicker.  GTA sells based on the "cool" factor of owning the game, and the violence second.  It does have its moments, but the overall package is too distasteful for me to stomach.  My own perception of the game is quite similar to Denis Dyack's.  It's not all that bad of a game on its own, but it's taking the industry in the totally wrong direction.

BMX XXX didn't sell because the gameplay was matched by better games, such as Dave Mirra's BMX 2, or THPS, and the titties didn't look good.

DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball sold because the titties looked good.
