As for the sold NES and SNES carts ... my original Legend of Zelda game still has a working battery.

Hmmm... no wonder I have never lost a N64 save...  I was actually kind of wondering when I would start to lose my save files.    Thanks for the tip Rick.    I have lost a few SNES saves, and I have lost TONS of NES saves already.

Heh... I would like to see it this generation if possible.    It's already been pushed through two consoles already.    Although I very much doubt that Silicon Knights will have ANYTHING for launch when the next system comes around.  I could be wrong, but I think that SK would prefer to wait a few months more than to produce a rushed game at launch.

They mentioned a little bit ago (today), that they were not going to let high heat baseball go.  Personally, I could care less about Sports games, but just thought I would mention.  I don't remember my source.  I think it might have been the idiots at IGN.

Any electronic device that can't take at least 48 hours of work without break is not fit to be operated IMO.  I have often played my GameCube in 20+ hour marathons, and I expect it to perform diligently to the very end.  I expect that I can run it continuously for a week, pausing the game for sleep breaks if I so chose.

It has performed excellently under all these circumstances.  I killed a member of the competition with these activities however.  (A PS2)

Heh.  I left out the fact that I found out earlier today that I didn't get a job I really wanted that paid $17/hour.  I went to an interview for it last week.  I was told that I really impressed them though, and I was STRONGLY advised to apply if they had any more jobs available later.  I kind of figure that's their way of saying that I would be a good 2nd choice.    I also found out that my video card's fan died, and I don't have the extended warranty on it like I thought I did.  I have to cough up the money to replace it soon.  I took it to the store today, and they refused to exchange it, so I am also carrying an expensive video card around in my backpack.

But yeah, I do that a lot too, going back to the store and buy the game I didn't buy before.    I am still kicking myself for not paying the extra $25 for Resident Evil, as it's a game I really want, and that's a damn good price.  I just have some misgivings about it, as it would mean getting up bright and early tomorrow to pawn off a bunch of crap to get the money to make rent.  I was thinking I could probably get a good price for Unreal Tournament 2k3, which I really don't want.

I would like to see something along the lines of the NP comics they did a few years back to celebrate the release of Super Metroid in terms of plot and style.

Today was another job hunting day for me.  I have been unemployed and not in school for the last month.  I am broke, in debt, and I have about enough money to make rent and $25 left over for food.  For food at the moment, I have a bottle of mayo, 2 cans of tuna, and a loaf of bread.  I also have a few cans of soup.

I took my resume to a few places, and Toys R Us was one of the places I took it to.  I filled out a form, and dropped it off, then figured I would check in electronics for the GameCube demo disc.  It turned out that they had them, but they were keeping them behind the counter.  They were giving them out to people who bought GameCube games.  I was a little bewildered at this policy, but kept my mouth shut, as I knew it was a pretty damned good deal.  So I asked if I could buy the disc seperately, knowing that I wouldn't make rent if I bought a game.  The girl said no, as the disc would ring it at $0.01, and the manager said that it could only be given away with a game.  I walked over to the GameCube section, held the $40 Resident Evil in my hands for a few seconds, then left the store.

My willpower didn't even last long enough for me to walk out of the parking lot.  I went back into the store and picked up the last copy of Resident Evil and put it on the counter.  A new girl was behind the counter this time.  I informed her that I would like a demo disc with the game, and showed her where they were kept.  (Toys R Us employees don't keep up with gaming news in this town).  To my surprise, when she passed it through the scanner, it showed up as $14.99.  Knowing I had a chance at making rent, I asked her if I could have just the disc.  She called the manager (again... hehe), and the manager said yes this time.  I passed over the money to pay for the game, and walked out of the store, just as the other lady was coming back to the till.  I could tell that she was kind of miffed that I had gotten away with just buying the demo disc.  I didn't want anyone to take my disc away, so I said thank you and hurried out of the store.

Walking home sounds very simple, but I decided to save the $2 I would normally spend on bus fare and walk home instead.  That involves a walk of about an hour down a hill, and then up the other side.  Today was also a very hot day.  By the time I got home, I was parched, exhausted, and VERY eager to try out Soul Calibur II.  To my surprise, I discovered I had left my key inside the house.

So I did the onyl thing a man in my position could do.  I went to the store and bought donuts with the $1.50 I saved by not taking the bus, went into Dairy Queen and drank water out of the tap until I gave myself a headache, then walked to the school to use the computers.

My roommate usually comes home around 2AM.  I figure I only have about 5 hours to wait and reminisce about my video game addiction that has led me to spending $17 on a demo disc that would have fed me for over a week.  As it is, I can probably roll pennies to last me another week or two, but if I don't find a job soon, I am going to have to see Welfare or the Food Bank.  Or both.

God I wish I had my GBA with me right now.  So anyways, does anyone else have a story about their videogame addiction leading to circumstances that are somewhat "less" than pleasurable?

Congratulations Andrew.  I must say that I am extremely jealous that you won a contest proving that you are the world's biggest fanboy...  (My pride is hurt)  But would you be willing to post your entry here so that we can see exactly what it was that won you this contest?  I am very curious, as I'm sure others here are.

If PGC does this again next year though, I WILL NOT lose.

Nintendo Gaming / How do I get a demo disk?
« on: May 28, 2003, 05:01:38 PM »
The Toys R Us in Lethbridge gives you the disc if you buy any GameCube game.  I couldn't afford it though, so I spent 10 minutes convincing them to sell it to me for $15.  I must admit that buying the demo disc and Resident Evil together for $40 was mighty tempting... but I couldn't afford it.

There are some things I really hope they change about TTS. Like the Boss fights. I'm gonna be really annoyed if they keep the Boss patterns the same, because then I'll know what to do. Like Psycho Mantis. D'you think they'll keep the same secret for PM or give him a new one (like changing the frequency on a Wave Bird or something?).

Denis has already said that they are changing all the boss fights, and Psycho Mantis was mentioned in particular.  Some of the new voice acting done for the scene can be heard at the end of the MGS: TTS trailer.

And as far as MGS: TTS vs MGS3 is concerned, I am really getting sick of it.  At no time did I ever say that MGS3 would be a bad game, and I am actually about as hyped for MGS3 as MGS: TTS.  It's just when you go off half cocked and act like it's a sure thing that MGS3 will be the better game that I get a little ticked off.  I have no problems if you prefer a PS2 to a GameCube.  I just ask that you tone down the "fanboyism" a little.  I just ask that your arguments be backed up with logic and common sense.

That being said, I really don't care if a tree branch in MGS3 doesn't look quite right any more than I don't care if the textures in MGS: TTS are a little blurry.  It's the style that's important, and both games are doing well in that department.

And it might not have been in context, but there was all these scenes about the guy and the blonde chick screaming out if they love each other or not, and they're in some dark corridor with zombies around them.
It's just that I'd rather not play a game with really bad acting. It's like watching a bad movie. You can compare the two now, since Konami are making their major games more movie-like. And I'm not saying that it's not scary either. Hell, the bloody Redeads in WW scared the crap outta me the first time I saw them! I try to kill them without having to go near them, which is why the bomb bag upgrade was so helpful! That screech is terrifying!

Actually, I LOVED the trailers for Silent Hill 2.  There were 3 of them, and 2 of those made it onto the PC version's first disc...  which of them did you see?  My favorite was the first one.  It started out with a shot of James in a rowboat going through a foggy lake.  It ended with some VERY disturbing scenes featuring a huge monster dragging around a corpse.  After it was over... it showed James back in the bathroom, and Maria ran her hand over his face and said: "See?  I'm real."  It was a teaser trailer shown at E3 a few years back I think.  It didn't make it onto the Silent Hill 2 PC version disc though unfortunately...

The voice acting in Silent Hill 2 was awesome though... all the trailers had good voice acting scenes I think... so I don't really know what your gripe is about that.

Anyways, since I am on the topic of Silent Hill... #3 just came out recently for PS2.  I have to wait until August for the PC version.  Is anyone else here waiting for the game as much as me?    Or do you coughcoughtraitorscough have PS2s?

Yeah, you are probably right, but it does mean something when you want to be top dog.  When they start sticking in 512MB on a video card, then that's cause for alarm.    That's more memory than my computer has.

Although... back in the day... My Voodoo3 card had a faster processor on it than my CPU, and had half as much memory as my computer had to work with.

We should be used to it by now don't you think?

I assure you that I have put as much use into my GameCube as many of you have.  I have never had one single freeze outside of the Battle of Hoth in Rogue Leader.  I have never once had a "disc error", except for the time I forgot to put the disc in the GameCube...  and I have never had a problem even with a scratched disc.  My GameCube played the most scratched rental copy of Eternal Darkness you are ever likely to find without a hitch.

I waited up all night outside of Walmart on launch day for my GameCube.

Yes, I would like to see a CG Metroid Movie, along with my PARASITE EVE movie.    Unfortunately, CG movies cost a fortune, and Nintendo has had little luck with their movies/tv shows in the past.  It's unlikely anyone would want to spend that much money on it.  Games -> Movies rarely work so well in the box office.

But you act as if you have seen a trailer for this movie... does one exist yet?  I wasn't aware it was that far in yet... where is this footage you speak of?

I suppose I can understand your anger.  But all this advancement is really neccessary, and is the core of the industry.

Microsoft had to release DirectX 9, as OpenGL was featuring fully programmable pixel shaders and DirectX was lagging behind in the technology.  Microsoft of course had to maintain their claim that DirectX was "better" than OpenGL.

ATI put DDR-II on their board, because it did give a small performance gain, and that was what they needed to fully show their superiority to nVidia.  It matters little that the board is too expensive to sell.  The point is that ATI has the crown right now, and nVidia is sorely defeated.    256MB of Memory onboard does serve a purpose.  If someone wants to run a game at an insane resolution, then the extra memory helps out a LOT for sub-pixel antialiasing, Z-buffering, and just regular memory usage.

PCI Express might not be much of an improvement, but everything helps.  It's hard to create an arbitrary new standard in this industry, and upgrading what we have is a much more practical way of ensuring that new standards will be available in the marketplace.  I agree that the PCI Express should have been given a more substantial upgrade, but every little bit helps.  PCI isn't aging very well, and I for one welcome the new expansion slot type.

Yeah, I think we all know that e-petitions are a waste of time for all concerned, but it does help us a little bit in venting our anxiety, such as signing that blasted Mother 3 petition.  We all knew that Nintendo would eventually make the game, we all knew that it didn't matter whether we signed the petition once, twice, or not at all.  Yet we still felt better putting our name down on the list.

I still don't think that consoles are in the vicinity of doing NURBS in real time.  Sorry Heretic.

And those hoping for Square FMV in realtime?  Don't hold your breath.  Check out the Rebirth movie on GCN.  It looks about FF9 FMV quality, but there's no way in hell that anyone would want to program a game engine that would do that on GCN.  Just because the ability is there doesn't mean that anyone is actually going to tap that power.

Resident Evil 4 is on my list of must have games, and has been there for a while.  I really like the new direction that the game is going in though, and am eager to try it out to see how it works.  Having never played Code Veronica, I am also eager to play it.

The zombies were more animated (there were these zombies that looked like they were having seizures which would be pretty freaky).
The outdoor levels were just horrible to watch. The frame just sucked.
I haven't played it, so these are just the impressions I have based on teh video.q]

DO NOT be dissing Silent Hill.  Be it 1, 2, or 3.  The game is pathetically easy in terms of fighting, and the puzzles don't make sense, but that's not what the game is about.  The game is intended to creep you right out.  Silent Hill 2 was the ONE PS2 game that made me actually want a PS2 for over a year.  When it finally came out for PC, I was a happy man.  The game is truly great at what it does, and those who haven't played it (to the end), wouldn't know what I was talking about.  Silent Hill 1 was good, and scary as hell.  Silent Hill 2 did the job that much better.

Well, the problem is that the video card evolution is going at a much faster rate than the evolution of video game graphics at the moment.  nVidia has a 6 month delay between new cards (or tries to anyways), and 6 months just isn't enough time to really introduce a new demand, and that demand is getting less and less all the time.  Therefore, prices increase.

I got my Voodoo3 2000 PCI for $150.  I got my GeForce3 Ti200 for $250.  I will probably get a Radeon 9500 (mid range card), or a 9700 whenever the price comes down enough to be reasonable.  Of course that won't be until the next generation of cards comes out.
