General Chat / RE: Learning Japanese
« on: August 24, 2003, 05:28:59 AM »
I would be careful with that Perm.  It's often the case that kids who learn multiple languages in their baby years never really master any of them.  A working knowledge of all them, but no mastery over any.  There is a biological basis for this theory, because learning the one language will deepen the neural pathways that relate to that one language, but when multiple ones are learned, there will be more pathways, but many will be shallower.

I learned all the Hiragana characters in a week though.    My Japanese teacher was quite the slave driver, and wanted to remove english characters from the classroom as soon as possible.  Katakana I still haven't really learned, but it's not really that required when actually learning the language, as it's only used in English words.  I can generally make do with Katakana, but I don't know it NEARLY as well as I know Hiragana.

TalkBack / RE: Games Too Complicated? Carmack Agrees.
« on: August 24, 2003, 05:21:21 AM »
I think what they mean is simply making the controls and concept of the game simple.  A game can be more fun if it only uses a couple of buttons than one that requires both hands and an inate knowledge of the controller.  There are some games that require a great deal of controls, such as a flight simulator, but some games, such as MGS2 use a lot of needless controls that can be stripped right out of the game for a more entertaining experience and less frusteration.  Just because a button is there doesn't mean that you have to use it.

Complicated games in terms of details are sometimes fun to play, but oftentimes those details will bog down the game.  Take Master Of Orion III for instance.  When the game first shipped, the AI was seriously bugged, so it made it required to micromanage everything in your empire, which was FAR too complicated.  With the new patch, the AI works as advertised, so you can give broad orders to everything, and it gets done with a minimum of effort.  Simplifying some very complicated stuff makes the game that much better.  The game is still complicated to the core, but you are shielded from that by a powerful AI.

Well, I really liked the movie, but it doesn't achieve the standard of excellence that I feel that Jacob's Ladder, Pi, and Donnie Darko had.  But I really liked the way that the story was presented.  It was some really messed up stuff.  I was also just getting some of the Conker's Bad Fur Day references to the movie, which I very much enjoyed.

About Trainspotting though, it's a lot like A Clockwork Orange in some ways.  The main character is played by Ewan McGregor, and is actually more on the lines of Reqiuem for a Dream than A Clockwork Orange, but you can definately see some similarities, most notably in the characters.  It's not among my favorite movies, but it's definately a good watch.

lol... glad to hear that I am not the only one in the world who hates The Smurfs.

My favorite cartoon would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 though.  That show just kicks so much ass.

KDR, Wind Waker has a fairly limited color palette, this is true.  But think about MGS2 for a second.  The game also has a trademark green and blue color palette dating all the way back to the SNES.  The thing is that if you put some games in fully realistic color, they just wouldn't feel right.  Personally, I found the world of Wind Waker to be excellent.  Fields of grass, lush forests with all kinds of activity, and rainy times at sea complete with lightning and big waves all serve to enhance the game for me.  Boring is not the word I would use to describe Wind Waker.

I think it's like egman says.  It's the artwork you don't like.  There's nothing wrong with the amount of stuff that Nintendo does in their games.

Heh.  Another movie like Trainspotting, but not as good.    I think that Pi is the better of the two movies still.  It was a good enough movie, but like A Clockwork Orange, it just didn't do anything for me.    The music was awesome though.

It's just that memorizing that much vocabulary and kanji, well, is hard. I kinda like having kanji now, though, because it helps you speed-read.

I remember being completely shocked when my Japanese teacher was teaching us adjectives, and she said: "Kanji wa benri desu."  I mean, to me kanji is a complete nightmare, as you have to learn how to read and write hundreds, even thousands of the little bastard things to even read a simple webpage.

But ironically, I am finding that even though I have failed horribly when it comes to writing them, I can actually use them to kind of figure out what a sentence is talking about at a glance, which is something I can't do with hiragana, or even english characters.

I just finished watching A Clockwork Orange.  I still can't figure out what the title means, but whatever.  It was a pretty good movie aside from the casting.  I was constantly reminded of Trainspotting while watching it, and that just made me think a lot about how much better the movie would have been with Ewan McGregor in the lead role.  To tell the truth though, the movie didn't really do much for me.  It just didn't strike any nerves with me, although I could clearly see what Kubrick was going for, and appreciated the quality of the work.

I will watch Requiem for a Dream next.

Their games are already better than 95% of what's out there.  Some of the games you mentioned in your initial post are the best in their field, bar NONE, such as Zelda and Luigi's Mansion.  I really have no idea what you are bitching about, and you are doing nothing to let me in on it.  I get the impression that you are crying because the gameplay is better than the graphics, and the graphics are mindblowing?

Am I also to assume that the only game left on your list of games with subpar graphics is Pikmin?  Because that's the impression I got from one of your earlier posts.

RABicle, that last post was entirely garbage IMO, not really anything worth fighting about in there.  I am still completely mystified about what exactly is wrong with EAD's graphics though.

Near as I can tell, you are just saying:  "EADs graphics are teh suck!" without backing it up in any way.  Mario Sunshine did have  a couple of places where the framerate dropped, but I think it's hardly representative of the entire game.  I know that the few times it did happen didn't bother me in the slightest.  Hell, I could even make Rogue Leader slow down by bombing the ground like 50 million times.

I still see no evidence that EAD can't make good graphics.  I look at Zelda, and I see the most gorgeous game ever made.  I see Mario Sunshine, and I see water that makes me want to dive into the TV.  I see Luigi's Mansion, and I see a fully interactive world that would make Kojima cry to mommy.

Gran Turismo 4 is a very nice looking game, but I don't see it as being much nicer than Wind Waker in terms of graphics.  They both achieved quite nicely what they sought out to do.  Until you actually start saying what makes the graphics "teh suck", I am afraid I can't debate this with you.  A general statement about "low poly counts" just doesn't do much for me.

To tell the truth, even the title of this thread bothers me.  You are implying that EAD's graphics are some of the worst on GameCube.  This is just the hugest lie ever.  Look around at the GameCube's selection.  Hell, look at Xbox and PS2 too.  EAD's graphics are better than at least 95% of what else is out there.

Btw, listing Animal Crossing in your list of "crappy" EAD games is just a low blow.  It was an N64 game.

I once posted over 5000 posts in a day.    Mind you that was in a specific place, and it was basically just a spamming contest.  We didn't outright multiple post or anything, but our posts were all one line pieces of garbage that didn't really serve any point.

On the last forum I was a regular at, I had over 7000 when I left after a year.  Upon my exit, I requested my post count cut to zero though.

If you are looking for homo-erotic games, look no further than MGS.  That game breathes of homo-erotic acts.

Personally, I am still anxiously awaiting Baten Kaitos the most, but Tales of Symphonia surely won't dissapoint me.  It seems that despite the nay-sayers, the GameCube is developing quality RPGs at about the same rate that the PS2 did.

Sorry, that was my best guess, as I didn't feel like looking it up, and I didn't feel like throwing in the game.  I never really remembered it having stuttering animation, so I thought it was 60fps.  Sorry.

Mouse Clicker, thank you very much for the find.

In a sidenote, I did something that I am very embarrassed about.  Since I found a copy for $25 CAD, I bought MGS2: Substance for PC.  I figured that I could get my $25 worth of fun from the VR training, and the new Snake's Tales missions.  I am actually greatly enjoying the game.  I refuse to play the Big Shell though.

When I am home (which never happens anymore, due to unrelated issues), I usually set up a LAN and play Master of Orion II, Descent, Alpha Centauri, or Starcraft with my Mom.  She is decent at Master of Orion, but I can take her down quite easily.  We are about evenly matched in Alpha Centauri, but I am much more cold-hearted, so I can usually come out with a win.  Descent and Starcraft she isn't so good at, but she plays anyways because she thinks that the games are fun.

The games that really interest her are RPGs, but for some reason she has difficulty playing them because she gets lost and can't figure out the controls.  That just strikes me as strange given that she can fly somewhat straight in Descent, but I have long since given up on teaching her to play right.

Most of the time, I will just have a friend over and play some GameCube games, or play some PC games online.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Cant EAD make decent graphics?

Actually, I can think of quite a few games that EAD made that feature quite amazing graphics.  Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Mario Kart, Pikmin, and Luigi's Mansion for example.

Mario Sunshine
This game features some of the most wonderful water effects ever.  The game handles a massive amount of water on screen, with a nice draw distance, and rarely loses its 60fps charm.  The polygon counts are certainly passable, but the true beauty lies in the many different effects used in the game, and the speed at which they are run.

Zelda
I still consider this to be one of the most breathtaking games I have ever played.  Being a cel shaded game, lighting is the key to making the game look excellent.  Of course Zelda handled the lighting like a champ.  Multiple light sources didn't even faze the game.  Multiple torches in a darkened area was simply astounding.  The polygon count was also insane at times.  Whether it be a field of grass gently blowing in the wind, or a bunch of floating particles over realistically modelled water, the game always had something to make you go "WOW!"  I know that this game continually wowed me, right up to the end.  The final fight knocked me on my butt, watching the realistic water fall down as Ganon cast all his special attacks without a hint of slowdown.  This game had it all.  Artistic and graphical beauty.

Mario Kart
This game just amazes me every time I see it.  There is always a LOT going on in any given scene.  There are carts racing down the road, there are chomps on the side doing their thing, as well as many other ambient effects.  There's lots of nice particle effects, as well as 7 other racers, each doing their thing, with 2 detailed character models in each cart.  But the truly wonderful thing about this game is that no matter how much happens on screen, the game never drops a frame.

Pikmin
100 independently controlled AI characters attacking other AI characters is not an easy trick.  But the GameCube handles it marvellously, showing nice smooth character models, and smooth animations while handling all the AI.  The game sacrifices graphics to add more processing power to the mix, and the game works well because of that.

Luigi's Mansion
It constantly amazes me that people think this game looks bad.  The particle and lighting effects in the game are still some of the best I have ever seen.  Virtually everything in the game is affected by the vacuum cleaner, and will move appropriately according to the laws of physics.  It takes a very powerful particle engine to manage all that.  The lighting is also very well done, complete with some of the finest shadows that you are ever likely to see.  The main character in the game is also endowed with a very high poly model, with some very nice animations and facial animations.  This game in particular I feel is a tech demo above all.  It showcases many of the GameCube's strengths, and does it well.

Basically, the point I am trying to make with this post is that there's more to a game than a polygon count, and if that's all you look at, then you are seriously missing out on what makes a great game engine.  Nintendo believes that ambience is more important than a character with a few thousand more polys.

Well, that's certainly an oldie.    I first saw that one last year sometime.

My favorite NG movies would have to be the "8 Bit Theatre" movies, "The Portal", "The Void", "Banana Beard", and "The Grim Reaper Show".

Pretty much anything by TLF, ClockClock, Blue Clock, or Matzerath will be worth your time.
