Nintendo Gaming / RE: You can buy COMPONENT CABLES - ONLINE as of NOW
« on: November 15, 2006, 03:15:54 PM »
The Wii component cables will work fine on GCN games in the Wii (they're just not compatible with the GCN system itself, as someone else asked).

Mine is shipping tomorrow. Sweet. Nintendo CSR's are the friendliest I've ever dealt with too.

Edit: Yeah, thanks for the heads-up Jon.

I ordered this morning at 10:30 ET and my account doesn't even show the order in the "Order Status" yet.

"You currently have no orders on file."

Ugh.

FYI

"OK, I just got off the phone with Nintendo (and again, it's amazing how nice and helpful everyone I have ever talked to at Nintendo has been). This guy said that they JUST got an update, and that even if your order says "Backordered" right now, the cable could still ship today or tomorrow. They were originally telling people if it said "Backordered" that it would definitely not ship until the 25th, but now that is not the case."

Sweet.  Hope they don't wait to ship until after launch or something, like the did the GCN component cables.

2nd controller/chuck, wii points, Zelda, Red Steel, Excite Truck, Rayman, component cables.

The Wavebird supposedly acts as a classic controller, so I'll let someone get me that controller later for christmas. And I won't get an SD card until I need it.

Will the new site adopt Nintendo's goal of "mainstream" appeal or will it mostly maintain the current level of editorial guidelines?  If that makes any sense...

What I mean is, for example, there is lingo in our everyday language that would be foreign to new players... Not that PGC is severely daunting in the geekery department, but I'm just curious if there are any specific guideline changes we can expect with the intent of welcoming in new mainstream players.

Speaking of deliveries, they're starting to happen. Stores are beginning to get their stock.

Hope y'all have a backup plan in case some stores break the date Friday-ish.

General Gaming / RE: Sony getting hit Hard lately

I'd make a minor note that a miniscule number were reported to have issues (2 is miniscule) and tell them to just keep playing it anyway... like they told PSP buyers with defective screens.

I would then insult your intelligence by explaining how difficult manufacturing 4 dimensional hardware is, but that we will increase production 200% (for a total of 6) next week. And for the price compared to the 'expensive' Wii and 360, we're practically giving this stuff away.

I think it's called PS3 because that's how many they made.

Yeah, that's the stuff. Three more pages to go.

Panasonic is *always* a good choice for Plasmas.  But be careful with their Pro line. Notice that they don't have built-in speakers. You need to bring you own audio system.

There's no wrong answer with Panny's Consumer line. You should be able to find their latest equivalent models TH-42PX60U or TH-42PX6U for roughly the same price as that pro model.

The 6U and 60U have the same panel screen, but the 6U is cheaper since it doesn't have an SD card slot for photos. They also have different frames/bezels.

Once calibrated correctly, the Panny's picture quality is tough to beat.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: EB Games Wii Pre-order

Damn, seems like the best online pre-order package was actually Wal-mart's.

4 games of your choice, 2nd wiimote and nunchuck, points card... But the games ship separately. Heck knows if you'll get them the same day.

Not enough brand placement. You can barely tell it's for the Wii.

As the risk of projecting my feelings on Ian, I think the bottom line of what he wants is the best from the past and also new stuff that is current and fresh (and deep). Or not, he can correct me.

I'll take Mario and Zelda any day of the week, but I also want more. Kid Icarus reinvented on Wii, and with an epic feel. A "dark side of Hyrule" title would be freaking awesome too... Things along those lines. With enough regularity that you don't get too starved while waiting for the next big game of that caliber to hit.

Of course anytime I mention something like this, someone says "well duh, we all want that" yet somehow it's still an argument... or, "non-argument" as the case was last time.

What I don't really like is the how Nintendo's "expand the market" goal is seemingly cherry-picked or half ignored by many of those that are so confident that "traditional" gamers won't be starved. They point to questionable games like Red Steel (potential control issues) as proof positive of satisfaction. No such guarantee is there at this point. Fans of these types of games were starved for the last couple years on the Cube, and they just don't want to see it continue. Assurances in fan forums isn't going to be convincing. Only the long term game lineup will do that.

They're designing it to be an industry shaker. "Shakers" don't usually realize their success (or potential success) in the early adoption days. The ipod is one obvious example of this. They didn't really take off until Christmas '04, and it was out for well over a year by that point.

The first year will be all about the early adopters and building awareness for the newbies. It probably won't see sales much different than GameCube at that point. The second year will be the year of momentum and will be more telling of the system's long term success, I think. This is true for most new products, but should be especially true with Rev considering Nintendo's goals for it. It'll live or die on year 2, IMHO.

Most reasons people mention why Nintendo shouldn't aim to be the second console are mostly emotional and ego.

They're going to launch a year after 360, and possibly head to head with PS3 if that is delayed (which some developers seem to think will happen). They're not going to be number one, whether they shot for it or not. Their relevance in the console market is questionable. Why fight a battle you're not going to win? Even from a business standpoint it's simply inefficient.

The train is already on the track. They're aiming to be different. The fate was sealed with the controller. Even though they're all making games, Nintendo's track is going in a different direction.

Didn't Reggie's speech mention that there is a 25% platform crossover? That's in a market where they are all essentially competing on the same level. GameCube somewhat competed as a second console, at least in price, but that wasn't until the price dropped later in the cycle and the system's fate was already determined.

Nintendo is banking on 360 and PS3 being too similar for most people to want/need both. If their assumption is correct, the crossover potential is Nintendo's to own.

If Nintendo proactively markets Revolution as a secondary alternative (whatever terminology they use), raises the crossover penetration modestly (even just to 30%), keeps the price low, continues to sell to their built-in fan base, AND bring in the new players, they have a fighting chance of increasing their market share while the other guys keep dogging it out. They'd probably still end up in 3rd place, but with more marketshare and mindshare. Hopefully they'll have sold the concept of the controller, which helps them in the fight of 2011 if the others copy it.

A lot of steps there, but it's possible.

Re: 1st year. As I mentioned I think the 2nd year will be just as important as the first, considering the distinct part of Nintendo's strategy to grow the market with new players. The first year will be all about early adopters and the built-in fan base. They're the ones that would have bought it anyway. The newbies aren't going to pick it up fresh off the assembly line. Those buyers need time. The crossover buyers need time too. Year 2 will be about riding momentum that year 1 begins to execute.

Of course, EVERYTHING hinges on this darn controller. It's either genius or insane.

I pretty much still stand by those, "predictions" or not  I made sales/marketshare predictions in another thread, though.

I was surprisingly more or less on top of the switching around for the last few days. The doc was a 50/50 shot based on my info (and I really did have a semi-elaborate vote history/role system.) If I had the chance to do it over, I'd reverse my moves and kill the killer and recruit the doc who wouldn't have a choice.

As for shyguy, I knew he wasn't always the killer. But he was the killer when I tried to recruit him, and he wanted a townie win regardless. It's his choice to lose for them, no worries.

Evan, you were probably also hindered because we didn't trust you. We thought you were the mole after our hit was protected. You probably would have been more "in" with the planning had we known better. Heh.

Ceric's questions are a bit more advanced. If they can be explained easily, then cool. But careful with the tech terms.

You could add that Wii is pronounced as "we" in the first question. I was watching a tv show last week, and the host didn't know. He just said the letters "w-i-i."

Who can play the Wii?/Can girls play with Wii too?

What kinds of games are there?

How many people can play at once?

---

Some of Ceric's Q's, simplified:

What is a sensor bar?

What kinds of TVs can Wii be connected to?
(Any standard TV or any new widescreen HDTV)

How do you connect the Wii to a TV?
(It connects like a DVD player, and all standards TV inputs are supported.)

How do you save your game status?
(internal memory, plus SD memory cards -- the same cards found in most digital cameras.)

I'm not sure if you're aiming for Video Games 101 level, but if you are you might want to either explain what first/third parties are, or maybe avoid the terms altogether and just use something like "games made by Nintendo" or whatever.

Or am I thinking too simple?

Nintendo fessed up to those N64 and GCN problems? I would have liked to have seen that... It would have given me much more confidence knowing they had recognized their old issues.

"Scammed" is a harsh word. I absolutely felt like I got my money's worth out of every system, for sure. (never got a VB so I can't say anything there.) There was some bait and switch, particularly with GCN, which I'll agree with him on. I don't think we'll know for sure, but I wonder if it really had anything to do with the changing of the guard. Things just started going in a different direction when Iwata took over. Their platforms, GBA/GCN, sorta took a hit while they re-wrote their agenda for DS and Wii.

Once the Wii is out, we'll see the "new" Nintendo running on all 4 cylinders. People will either love it or crave for more traditional wares.

First it has to have component inputs (a set of Red-Green-Blue inputs on the back). If not, don't bother doing anymore research

If it does, follow the previous advice. Find the magic words "480p" or "progressive scan" in the manual.
