Component output isn't HD. That feature is available even on some standard definition TVs too.

Nobody said anything about Zelda being crappy. But if you're fixed on buying a console for specific characters then your buying choice is already made regardless.

Speaking personally, GameCube ended up not being versatile enough for me in terms of the overall software availability. If I get a PS3 instead it won't necessarily be because of the power, but because history dictates that its software support likely will be more expansive. But that is a whole other thread that doesn't really belong here.

I did just think of something however. The Xbox 360 and PS3 demos have strongly focused on visual realism. That's not typically Nintendo's artistic direction. I wonder how their style will blend with the "HD era" of gaming? Will it SEEM underpowered even if it's not?

Many questions.

Well consider that if games are played in high-def, that 2-3x benefit is a wash in resolution alone.

Then again, we do remember when Nintendo low-balled their GameCube numbers. They were giving realistic polygon data with effects, etc. Xbox 360 and PS3 performance is very impressive, but theoretical.

Sooooooo we'll see... but by god if Nintendo misses I really do need to get a PS3 instead.

Doesn't look exactly "wow," but few things that are built for mini sizes do.

2-3 times more powerful? Ugh. That really hurts. Now we know they forfeited power. They're really risking the "toy" stereotype again.

Apple doesn't order G5s in the millions because they can't be supplied in the millions. Half of their product lineup doesn't have G5's yet, and most users are still using G4 equipment.

Three and quad-core PPCs are in the realm of possibility by then, but not G5s, and they wouldn't be cheap enough for a console anyway.  Whatever they are, they'll be less sophisticated than the 970's, and better suited for gaming.

"well we will know next week wont we"

Suffice to say we know now. Burden of proof is on the supplier.

Aside from the unlikely scenario of a legit video leaking, it's not a practical accessory.

1084
An accessory with it's own disc drives?

This is cute and cool at times, but far from credible.

"Games... movies are still in the air."

The game discs will likely be proprietary since using a DVD format (which is strict in specification) would open them wide up for piracy. So movie playback is likely.

As mentioned in the other thread before it died, I think it's likely that actual game discs will still be proprietary in some way, like using some of the same methods from the Gamecube discs.

But I do wonder exactly how powerful the system is if it's light on power consumption, and so small. Top of the line graphic cards are monster heat machines. Perhaps they're borrowing tech from the portable line of cards... or maybe "low-powered" is just relative.

I also still wonder about the hybrid idea... a battery and display accessory seems even more probable.

The "First Revolution Details" thread is the one that disappeared for some reason. I was asking that if it couldn't be recovered, unlock the locked one. But now it's back...

The, uh, "sleek, 1 inch thick, DVD-playing Revolution" thread seems to have disappeared. Hope it comes back... if not, please unlock the thread in the Revolution forum.

There is another replay on the 15th at 9 AM. Warning: Record it so you can keep your finger on the fast forward button.

It takes skill to make an interview segment with Rare a complete waste of time.

Seriously, MTV must have been in charge of directing/editing the show. There's nobody else in TV that'd think it was a good idea to show mere seconds of product footage, but have 2 full music performances. And have a game tournament with more CROWD shots than in-game action shots.

But who really wants to see the game in progress when we can just watch the crowd count down to zero as time runs out?

All image, no substance. MTV's calling card.

Sony and Toshiba have always been talking. Toshiba has denied that a truce was coming.  In fact they just released a new 3-layer spec for HD-DVD (45 gigs) a few days ago. Doesn't sound like the war is over at all.

gally: See the 360 threads for talk about the show.

1091
I guess this is what Nintendo means when they said beefed up graphics weren't going to be enough. I'm all for high-def games, but bringing current high-end PC-quality graphics to the TV really isn't impressive anymore.

Funny, usually when Nintendo downplays the competition, they're stretching a little (they publically berated DVD playback at first). But they seem to be right this time.

1092
The Xbox 360 story = better graphics (usually), and now with wireless.

Whoopie.

If PD0 is their big launch title, they've got a problem.

What's the biggest difference between Silver and Gold Live (other than the price)? I'm not really clear on that.

FYI: To put it into perspective, the DS is about 1.25" thick also. There's hella power in that little Revolution.

Someone had to say it...  What if Revolution could double as a pseudo-portable, with optional battery and screen? It'd cost a lot more than PSP total, but.... damn my imagination to Hell.

But if they did it with GameCube, it just seems even more possible with Revolution. I'd say a console/portable hybrid could be revolutionary... Makes the idea of speaking to other Revolutions and the DS more interesting.

We don't necessarily need HD media to play "HD games." Xbox 360 only uses DVD9 also.  Chances are the blu-ray capacity in PS3 will go to waste more than not.

Modern PC games like Half Life 2 fit on a DVD and look killer in high-res modes.

There's definitely a lot of hardware parity with Xbox here. Nintendo can't give consumers any excuse to dismiss Revolution. While I hoped for a shockingly small mac mini-sized unit, it may be considered a "toy" to some again.

Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's vice president for corporate affairs, said GameCube's successor would be "very, very sleek." She described it as horizontal and no taller than a stack of three DVD cases.

Unlike GameCube, the new system will play DVD's, Ms. Kaplin said, and will feature a wireless controller. It will play GameCube games as well as a new class of high-definition games, with new emphasis on online play.

I guess we gotta wait to see if she was quoted right.

I edited my post above but still wanted to make the point.

Playing "standard DVD media" could be referring to just movie playback. The game discs themselves could still be proprietary somehow... like the Panasonic Q setup.

Surely Nintendo will have piracy measures in place. If there is GameCube compatibility already built-in, it could very well borrow the same method.

Ah ha, I was hoping for something shockingly small. Think Mac Mini.

Playing "standard DVD media" could be referring to movie playback. The game discs themselves could still be proprietary somehow (like the setup in the Panasonic Q). Frankly there's no way Nintendo would do it otherwise. They'll definitely protect their games somehow.

a. The games could be second layer-only again, this time with a 4.7GB capacity.

b. Or maybe they'll enable two layers, and use a bar code again or some form of encryption.

I think this news means we're going to see it. They wouldn't discuss the appearance if they weren't ready to show it, would they?

1098
They must have had less than 5 actual minutes of gameplay on the show. So that was lame.

They didn't discuss the hardware at all. Just showed it on a stage, talked about Live, some very brief demo reels, and then did a playoff with PD0... If PD0 is going to be their big launch title, then I'm underwhelmed. Honestly.

Some of the games look great though, particularly Madden and most of the racers. There were also several that looked like current generation games too.

All in all this was no big deal. Sony and Nintendo don't have to "match" this unveiling since it was 80% fluff. They could safely wait for E3 and be no worse off. This was nothing more than a tiny preview with little substance.

Nintendo characters "plotting the revolution" with some kind of tagline like "The Revolution Will Begin July 4th" (or whenever launch is, but that's a great date for the US launch).

I still have a hard time understanding the "90 days" things though. Does it really take you guys that long to figure out if you want something or not?

Re: 90 days.  For the masses, it can. Not necessarily individuals. It takes time to get the message out. Much more than that and you face diminishing returns. (Note the millions MS spent promoting Xbox for a full year in advance, and sold only a million or two more than GameCube overall).

But exactly how Nintendo acts is up in the air because Reggie is now in charge of marketing, and Revolution may not be the $199 sweet spot for home electronics.

Well Nintendo at one point believed that purchasing decisions are made within 90 days, so I think Nintendo will have at least a 90 day marketing window, similar to GameCube. But the Cube was a $199 product... within the impulse purchase range.

If the Revolution is more expensive, I think we'll see a more aggressive pre-launch campaign. No way will there only be a month or so, if they're serious about competing.

Still, that mid-2006 could easily slip, like all of their system launches have.
