Yeah, I'm sure many would have felt the same way.  They might have made some new stages and weapons at least.  Anyway, that's in the past now.

But we still didn't have enough people. To create a game like Super Smash Bros. Melee, I would want a team with a minimum of 50 people. Getting together that many people would be a back-breaking task.

So it was that Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto introduced me to a "particular team" that had just completed a large-scale game.

Until the day comes when I can announce the team's name, I shall simply refer to them as "The Studio."
Anyone have any ideas what team had just finished a large game and fanatically plays SSB Melee?  I'm drawing a complete blank on games completed in that timeframe.

The time frame would probably be somewhere from late May to July 2005.  A game is completed usually a month before it goes on sale.  I'm sure you'll think of something.

Any 3rd party character that figured prominently on the NES to me would be a great adddition.  Mega Man, for example, would be perfect.  While Konami's dealing, I'd love to see a Belmont from Castlevania and perhaps Ryu from Ninja Gaiden.  The Bionic Commando would be sweet.  There's really tons of possibilities.  I don't mind having third party characters at the table at all.  As long as Nintendo characters remain at over 50% it's perfectly logical.

Nintendo has opened its new Smash Bros. website, where you can find the movie shown last night among other things.

The newly opened Smash Bros. Dojo features some useful info as you can see from the links on the left.  I highly recommend watching the movie, and the "How this game came to be made" section is very interesting.  It features an English translation of a monologue by the director explaining some of the decisions that resulted from Nintendo announcing the game.

Most interstingly, Nintendo apparently announced the game at E3 last year without informing the game's original creator (at that time, no longer an employee), Masahiro Sakurai.  Apparently if they could not get him to return, they were simply going to use the same characters from Melee and simply add online functionality.  However, with the return of Sakurai to the helm (a difficult decision for him about which he goes into much detail), we will now be awarded with a true Super Smash Bros. Melee sequel as recent news clearly indicates.  This likely explains why the game won't be ready in time for launch.

One last bit of information from the site is that the music for the trailer was composed by Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame.  It was not suggested that he would compose for the rest of the game though.  However, it was revealed that a full orchestra would be used to compose the rest of the game's music complete with "lyrics" in latin.  That will certainly provide a unique aural experience.

Thanks, that's what we're here for.  And you seem to be right about Prime 3 at launch.  To that I can only say THANK YOU JAYSUS

MattVDB?

I wasn't aware that this or Prime 3 was going to make the launch sadly.  In fact, this very story says it will be 2007

Most info is suggesting Prime 3 won't be ready for launch either unfortunately.  The press sheets say "TBA" release date for now.

Nintendo just showed a video behind closed doors of the forth coming Smash Bros. game for Wii.  New Character details inside.

You read correctly.  Those dastardly devils at Nintendo saved a bit of knock-your-socks-off info for the first night of E3.  To cut straight to the chase, the name of the title is Super Smash Bros. Brawl and new playable characters include Solid Snake, Wario, Meta Knight (of Kirby fame), Pit (of Kid Icarus fame) and Zero-Suit Samus (of Metroid: Zero Mission fame).

Update: There is some more info from this secret gathering.  Wario will have a fart attack and Snake will naturally be using explosives and his trusty cardboard box.  The game will be fully compatible with the GameCube controller.  There will be online multiplayer for two players, but so far, syncing up four players is a technical challenge for that sort of game that they haven't fully worked out.  It's also reportedly "possible" that other 3rd party characters could end up in the game before it's all said and done.

Finally, in contradiction to information from E3 last year, the game will be a 2007 title, not a launch title.  And while we're on the subject, Super Mario Galaxy was also confirmed to be too early to launch with the system.

Update 2: We have more new information on SSBB. The Super Smash Bros logo is a new item in the game. When picked up, it gives the character a super attack. What's special about the item is that each character receives a different special attack. The Nintendogs also appear in the game, putting their paws up to the screen to distract the players.

TalkBack / RE: IMPRESSIONS: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
« on: May 10, 2006, 10:48:43 AM »
From everything I've taken in over the last week or so, I don't think Prime 3 is a launch title (oh how that saddens me).  My gut tells me that if it isn't launch, it might as well be fall 2007 (that would put it head to head with Halo 3, yay).  Honestly, I just want Retro to have enough time to really polish it.

As for the remote... judging by everything I've seen, they're using IR not RF.  That means you're going to have line of sight problems with the remote if you're not careful.  Hopefully a little practice and a little more software development make that a minimal or non-existant problem.

For my own part, I have faith that the game will play well with the Wii controller.  I'm getting the Wii version and that's it.

I'm not sure if the Wii version will work with the GameCube controller.  My guess would be no.  I'm not sure if any Wii games are allowed to use the GameCube controller.  It's possible they could allow the Wii shell controller to work optionally.

Nintendo isn't ready to let the world now precisely when they'll be able to obtain a Wii or for how much money.

After Sony revealed the rather large price of the Playstation 3 yesterday (599 for the real deal and 499 for butchered version with a number of tasty features missing), many people expected that Nintendo would reveal the Wii's price today.

Instead, Nintendo kept their conference focused on the games, specifically stating that they are not ready to reveal the price or launch date.  They did however confirm that the Wii would be launched in Quarter 4 of 2006.

TalkBack / Zelda Wii Details Revealed
« on: May 09, 2006, 09:18:59 AM »
Nintendo reveals that the GameCube and Wii versions of Twilight Princess will now be sold separately.  Control details inside.

Nintendo announced that the GameCube/Wii version of Zelda: TP is no more.  It will be replaced by two separate retail packages, one for GameCube and one for Wii.  This shouldn't cause much problem for most as both games will be launching alongside Wii.

The game was also demonstrated extensively to show how the Wii controller is used to enhance the gameplay.  Surprisingly, the sword is controlled using the accelerometer in the analog attachment, not the remote.  The B button will also initiate a basic sword attack.  The remote will be used to control the menus, camera, and distance weapons and items (bow, hookshot and boomerang so far).  For menu purposes, Navi the endearing fairy from Ocarina of Time, makes a return flying to the location you point to when navigating menus.

Fishing was also shown in a video reel and it seemed to use the controller as you might expect.  The remote appeared to be used to cast the line and a "reeling" motion with the analog attachment reeled the fish in.

The graphics reportedly look about the same as they did last year at a glance.

TalkBack / Wii Sports Announced
« on: May 09, 2006, 08:50:25 AM »
Nintendo reveals and partially demonstrates the self descriptive Wii Sports.

Nintendo announced the winner of an AOL contest and invited the lucky guy on stage to play a tennis match with Reggie, Miyamoto and Iwata.  The game went as you might expect with familiar tennis ball "pop" sounds emitting from the controller's newly revealed speaker each time a player hits the ball.

The tennis game is part of a larger package aptly titled Wii Sports.  Footage of baseball and golf, likely from Wii Sports, was also shown.  There may be more in the final version as well.

This demo also concluded Nintendo's media briefing.  Stay tuned for more news and preview updates later today and gameplay impressions from the show floor tomorrow!

TalkBack / Mario for Wii Shown Briefly and More
« on: May 09, 2006, 07:56:20 AM »
Nintendo shows footage of a new Mario platformer for Wii.

The name is Super Mario Galaxy.  The footage was brief, but Mario was doing some typical looking platform things to the tune of a Wii controller.  It has not yet been announced that the game would be a launch title.  Only Zelda has been confirmed as a launch title so far.

Other games shown briefly include (I will describe the gameplay when names were not available): drumming, golf, symphony conducting, racing, Super Mario Galaxy, flying, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Wario Ware, baseball, Red Steel and Zelda.

Other notes so far are that Zelda will be available on the Wii's launch day and Metroid Prime 3 is subtitled Corruption if my ears did not deceive me.  A speaker will be included in the remote portion of the controller.  In an example from Zelda, the bow-string snaps on the remote and as the arrow travels the sound moves to the TV (or your stereo) speakers.

Update: Nintendo announced that 27 Wii games will be playable on the E3 show floor tomorrow.

TalkBack / Sony Tries to Ape Nintendo, Fails
« on: May 08, 2006, 04:53:50 PM »
Oh no they just didn't!

Sony just announced that the standard PS3 controller will include a 3 axis tilt sensor capable of detecting motion with "6 degrees of freedom".  The announcement was followed by a quick video, which, to the trained eye, demonstrated the limitations of their thinly veiled attempt to copy Nintendo's innovative Wii controller.  They proudly asserted that the device was innovative (yes, but who's innovation?) and blithely pointed out that it requires no external sensors to function.

At what cost does the loss of external sensors come though?  In short, the PS3 controller will only detect the tilt of the controller as it is moved.  The demonstration showed a guy attempting to fly a plane from the game Warhawk with it.  He made exaggerated motions, which turned the plane, but the plane returned to level before he moved the controller back.  This is a far cry from the sensitivity of the Wii controller.  The sensor bar allows the Wii to detect the precise location and orientation of the Wii controller, including distance from the screen and very subtle movements.  This will enable a much larger range of applications (such as first person shooting to name just one).  Of course, the Wii controller also has an accelerometer in the analog attachment as well.

Apparently no other PS3 launch games (assuming Warhawk makes the launch) are currently designed to use the device, which was likely a last minute add on in response to the increasing popularity of Nintendo's new controller design.

I hope not cuz i noticed some lag from controller to plane.

The PS3 tech would be useful if programmed right.  But it's no Wii-mote.  And yes, the nunchuk has an accelerometer in it which is approximately what the PS3 controller will have (I can't say from here which is of better quality if either though).

consumers aren't that stupid.  and the PS3 costs 500 bucks anyway (with a 20 gig HDD or 600 with a 60; that was also just anounced at the conference)
