Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U External USB Storage Devices
« on: March 17, 2022, 07:10:29 PM »
I dealt with this issue in 2020. My old 1TB drive was dying and I did not want another one that needed an AC power supply. I ended up buying this Maxone 320 GB external drive which is still about $25. I did need to use a y-cable and bought an INSTEN Dual USB 3.0 Type A to Micro-B USB Y Shape High Speed Cable for External Hard Drive/Seagate/Toshiba/WD/Wii-U/Note 3/Galaxy S5/HDD Enclosure. The exact cable is no longer available from the same listing but anything comparable should work fine. Since I did this, I have plenty of room and no problems loading software from the external drive.

Boy have I got a solution for you. Set up an account on Backloggery where your collection can take on a life of its own, haunting you with constant reminders that even if you did nothing but play games all day, you would still never get to all of them.

Okay, I am sold. I will be getting the physical version from LRG.
Also, I really enjoyed Double Cross and feel that it is underrated.

I am interested in whether Triangle Strategy will outsell Octopath Traveler. Does anyone remember what sales of Octopath ended up being?

Still on the fence with Dawn of the Monsters.  :-\

This time, I'm finally going to beat TMNT 1 NES.
I beat it a year or two ago and it is tough but doable. The underwater level is nothing compared to the final level. Turtle Power!

I always seem to miss the AGDQ livestreams, but enjoy the recordings. When is the next one?

My main attempts with speedrunning have been with one of my favorite games, Mega Man 2. The game is short and if you know what to do is quite easy. I don't always remember the boss order for every Mega Man but I do for 2. This was one of the NES games I had as a child and played over and over, because we didn't have much money and so very few games. I like that I can complete it in one sitting as that is very satisfying and somewhat rare with games today. My preferred way to play is on the Switch with the NES joy-con. My best time is 68m14s. I seem to shave off a few more minutes each time, but only replay it twice a year. I have always wanted to play it more regularly, like once a week, but you know...so many games, so little time.

I also like to speedrun through Mario platformers. Usually the first playthrough is a 100% run and my second playthrough is an any% speedrun, but sometimes those collectables get me. I am hoping to try a speedrun of Odyssey sometime this summer.

A quick search of the forums does not reveal a topic dedicated to speedrunning, unless you count this one. So let's see what people's thoughts, opinions, history, etc. are with speedrunning video games.

If you have any history with speedruns, then share the game, your best time, and any stories.

If you don't speedrun then you could discuss why or maybe even give it a try and report back.

Obviously this is not limited to breaking records, just any playthrough of a game, typically a replayed game, where you tried to go fast.

The Simpson's Hit and Run is really good. Also, great to see you finally got Ring Fit. That is my primary indoor workout during these winter months.

I just received word that the above game will not be released on 3DS  :'(

Here is the newsletter sent out by the developer:

The Game Won't Release on 3DS
And I'm As Shocked As You Are
Surely You're Joking
_ Afraid not. There was no one in the world more excited than me to release the game on New Nintendo 3DS, and we attempted to for as long as we could. The problem is, Nintendo had other plans. I'm under contract not to go into the details, but it's sufficient to say that Nintendo made it so that releasing Dream-Prison Wanderer onto 3DS in time to monetize the release would be utterly impossible. I'm not even talking about the news that the eShop closes next year or that August is the latest you can add funds to the eShop. Nintendo made further decisions which I am not allowed to share that nevertheless further killed any hopes we had of carrying out our plan. This all happened very suddenly and very early, in our opinion. We know it was a risk that Nintendo would shut down the eShop early but we had hoped they wouldn't be so swift and cruel about it.

General Gaming / Re: Digital games and you
« on: February 28, 2022, 12:38:30 PM »
I am always prefer physical games over digital and rarely do I get a download version of something that is available on a disc or cart. I like to have the objects on my shelf and I like the ceremony of loading them into the console. It just doesn't feel like I have the game if it is only a download. Also, I don't like worrying about running out of memory on the console. I am the same with movies and tv and still prefer discs to streaming, though there is noticeable difference in quality there. Of course, I have a ton of games digitally because that is the only way to get them. If a download is absurdly cheaper than the disc then I might also cave in on that front. If I am on the fence about getting a game then the physical copy usually puts me over the edge while it being download only makes me hesitant.

I sort of felt that way talking to some people about Journey and similar games. I would run into people that just play FPSs and try to describe these pacifist games and they did not seem to get it.
I also think The Witness is tough to talk about without spoiling it so I just tell people to play it because it is amazing.

I bought a bunch of games from the 3DS eShop because of the announcement of its impending closure. Most of these I have not played but they looked interesting and/or were recommended here in the forums:
  • SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition cheap, looked cool
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D deep discount
  • 3D Streets of Rage 2 great 3D
  • 3D Gunstar Heroes great 3D
  • Liberation Maiden recommended here
  • Fun! Fun! Minigolf Touch! developed by Shin'en
  • Attack of the Friday Monsters! recommended here
  • Pirate Pop Plus cross-buy with Wii U (new 3DS only)
  • Jett Rocket II: The Wrath of Taikai developed by Shin'en
This took care of about half of my wish list. Still trying to decide on the rest.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What do you use your Switch USB Ports for?
« on: February 27, 2022, 01:48:14 PM »
One is for the cable to charge the Switch Pro Controller. The other if for a cable to charge the Wii U Pro Controller. Occassionally I use the Gamecube controller adapter but that is not left connected.

Some great pics BShy. I would second Trauma Team and Red Steel.
Looking at my Wii collection, so many have already been ported.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land would look luscious in HD.
Epic Mickey, The Simpsons Game, and Harvey Birdman all hold up well IMO but would have licensing issues to deal with.
Dead Space: Extraction would great but with some light gun peripheral that the joy con slide into.
Finally, requiring the least amount of work needed would be Rhythm Heaven Fever and maybe playing it in handheld I could finally get the last gold medal  >:(

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Best of the 3DS eShop: 2013 Releases (Part 3)

I just realized I have Star Wars pinball. I did not buy it outright. I think I got it from a humble bundle or something similar. It is made by Zen so it is high quality and the 3D looks great. They even made stereoscopic 3D tables for PS3 and PS4, which look great on a 3D TV. Anyway, if you like pinball simulators and Star Wars this is worth getting.

Capcom is having a sale in the 3DS eShop right now. I think all of the games are also available on cart but the discounts are so deep that the digital version might be the way to go. I picked up RE: Mercenaries 3D for $5.
There is also a Cooking Mama game for about $5. That is not published by Capcom of course, but I figured I would mention it here.
