Congrats on dodging the reseller bots!  ;) Hope those issues will sort themselves out though, I get the impression these new boxes have some rocky onboarding right now. What are you looking to play on it? Just PS4 games for now?

Regarding Starfox Adventures, I think the previously held theory was that a bossfight with Scales was planned but scrapped last-minute. I can't find a source for this anymore since it's being buried in new revelations. I recall a Rare staffer having confirmed this, but since I can't find it that might be wrong.

There are unused audio clips present in the game which appear to imply Falco would team up with Fox mid-fight, so it's not clear if that was planned before the merging of Dinosaur Planet and Starfox had begun.
Personally I always assumed that, since Scales explicitly says "fire!" right before Falco showed up, it would be an aerial battle, perhaps re-using the Galleon from the opening cut-scene.

Really cool more information is coming out about this now, it's a fascinating game since the seams are quite visible in places.

All right time to lower the anchors!

Downloaded two games:
-3 points: Capcom Arcade Stadium: 1943 Battle for Midway
-3 points: Capcom Arcade Stadium: Ghosts 'n Goblins
Beat one of them:
+1 point: 1943 Battle for Midway
Total: -5

1943 Midway is not a very good game, just kinda loops 2 types of levels 16 times in a row with more of the same five enemy types everytime. Powerups aren't persistent either.
Also tried Ghosts 'n Goblins but lo & behold I'm again bad at this. Who would've thought after trying and being bad at the NES, and SNES versions?
Also don't love the whole Capcom Arcade Stadium wrapper. Everything seems to trigger a 3-8 page tutorial, and it's annoying the menu options change when you're playing a game or selecting one. The NSO NES/SNES apps are way less fancy, but also a lot easier to grasp at a glance.
So far this has been a rousing success.

...Splat Max Fury Railroad?

Thought the trailer for Splatoon 3 definitely looked promising, had sort of hoped it was a spin-off with a meatier campaign based on the mood they were setting.
Splatoon probably isn't quite for me anymore: I've largely eliminated multiplayer games from my life since I have a tendency to play them for 100 hours if left unchecked. I'd rather play 10-20 short indie games in that timeframe, than a single game without a lot of story progression. That said, I do really admire Splatoon. The world and character designs have that immediate Nintendo magic, and there's a sense of urgency in both its gameplay, and the environmentalist message underpinning the franchise.

I don't really remember stats to share, only played the first one for ~20ish hours. Cleared the campaign and did a bunch of Turf War, especially with the Splat Roller type. I've always gravitated towards support roles in other team shooters, usually played Engineer or Medic in Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 1942. BF2 also had an ammo support role I was good at.
The Roller wasn't quite that, but it's satisfying to neatly fill in landmass or paint over the opponent's turf. Also very fun to run folks over with when they're not looking. I don't know if I ever even tried switching from default weapons... the last time I played I accidentally talked to a dude who insisted on detailing like 20,000 weapons I had apparently unlocked, and you couldn't escape that conversation. Literally sat there mashing A for 10 minutes.  >:(

EDIT: Ok will make a real post.
I've played very few of these but:
- Mario Pinball Land I remember really liking back in the day, but I've never heard a single positive word about it since, so maybe I was just an idiot.
- Kuru Kuru Kururin is one I tried a while ago, spurred by its elusive status. It's quite a cute game, you basically go around rescuing chickens by wrangling a rotating blade through tight hallways. Be warned this can get absolutely aggravating real quick. There's a cheap game on Switch which basically replicates this, but with squids rather than birds, called Octocopter.
- All these Medabots games sound identical, but they're actually quite different. The first two are remakes of the Japan-only MedaRot 2 on GBC, and they're turn-based RPGs not dissimilar to Pokémon, but battles are usually 3v3. I doubt any of these have wide appeal outside series fans, and it's stupid they went the 2 versions route like Pokémon, but interesting Natsume brought them to VC.
- Meanwhile those Medabots AX games are 2v2 platform fighters, like Digimon Spirits Battle (also on GBA). I played one of those AX games and it was decent. You slowly collect new robot limbs for your monster which have various effects: replacing your legs with wheels makes them faster, but reduces your jump. You can even use tracks which have higher defense. You can bolt guns or swords to their arms, or mix & match them, and there's some strategy in which of the opponent's limbs you target first. Hardly a long-lost classic, but you can make weird combinations like an octopus head on wheels with cat claws and a bazooka.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour is my favorite game in that series. Mario Tennis: Power Tour gets all the attention around these parts because of Stan's infamous review, but I think the golf version is the better game. I really wish they'd bring back that RPG mode. Golf Story on Switch was fun, but it's not quite the same.

Wonder how far the new one will lean in that direction, probably not to the degree seen in the handheld ones, but you might get your wish there.

Found a speedrun for DK, and Insano is right about it speeding up considerably towards the end. I'll put King of Swing and Drill Dozer on the maaaaaaybe list. It's a bummer we still don't have GBA titles included in the NSO subscription, there's a lot of things here I would like to sample, but not necessarily pay for.

One series we passed over completely in this round is Castlevania. I played Aria of Sorrow through virtual console a few years ago, and that one's pretty decent, but has rather dull level design. Most screens are honestly just corridors, or have maybe a platform or two within spitting distance of each other. It's hardly comparable to the GBA Metroids in that regard, but to compensate they focus more on combat.
Overall I liked the game, particularly the bosses, but after years of reading hype it was a tad disappointing. Aria feels fairly shallow, with just a few memorable moments. I rarely got lost and was mostly just filling in the map for completion's sake. Still decent, but not amazing.

232
A big one I want to point out, though, is DK: King of Swing. I really loved that game, which felt like it just came and went without getting any real attention. You control it with the shoulder buttons, which cause the big ape to grab onto things, and as the name implies, when you're only grabbing onto one thing you swing around it. You use these mechanics to navigate the environment, and it has a lot of neat ideas. It also got a sequel on DS called DK: Jungle Climber, which is pretty good too.

Looked this one up based on your post, but I gotta say it doesn't look very appealing in video form. The movement (jumps especially) looks slow, and there's a flatness to the art style in that Mr. Driller way, but more towards the pastels spectrum. Much prefer the Mario vs. DK visuals.
Looking at the gameplay I'm kind of reminded of Clu Clu Land, of all things.
Is it just a game that looks a bit dull but is really fun to play? Is there a rhythm component to alternating button presses, like how Khush is saying? I'm curious what makes this one so good, since it doesn't really wow me at a glance.

Interested to join in too if y'all don't mind having a boat anchor around. Fear my score will mostly bring everyone down, as I'm probably gonna nab that Capcom Arcade Collection while it has 2 free games on there. But hey maybe it'll motivate to at least actually play them!

Few more early 3DS RetroActive suggestions:
1. Scribblenauts Unlimited
Hearing the solutions everyone dreams up sounds like easy comedy. Convince Jon by noting he can spawn infinite bathtubs.

2. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Was a launch window game, a tactics RPG. Probably one of the last Tom Clancy games on Nintendo systems, outside of Splinter Cell 3D and Blacklist on Wii U? Feel like this one was already covered on the show once though... Also contains a game breaking bug.

3. The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves
This is peak early 3DS bullshit. A $12 eShop RPG/dungeon crawler but you gotta catch your party members like Pokémon, by using the AR viewfinder and physically going outside. I believe they spawn in wifi zones which your 3DS pings.
If you don't wanna wave a 3DS around in front of Starbucks there's a Well-Mannered Mode to turn off the AR stuff. Obviously only pick this one if it's safe to go outside, don't go catching COVID over some precious Wifi waves.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Place your bets on Feb 17th Megatons!
« on: February 17, 2021, 08:59:03 PM »
Well, my HOPES for the Direct were more absurd than my expectations, which are what I posted. I did really want to see Woolly World on Switch, though. It's the rare Yoshi game that really clicked with me.

I just saw a lot of ports of old games (yes, yes...ironic...yes), a lot of remasters of old games ,or games that played like old games. Then it all capped off with a remaster of the worst Zelda game following a bait & switch with Breath of the Wild 2.

Let's just say that this Direct peaked with the Xenoblade characters in Smash announcement and it was all downhill from there.

Yeah, Woolly World was pretty good so it's a bummer the sequel is seemingly less accomplished. Wonder if they'll make another one for Switch 2, or port Woolly World instead. Maybe the response if they ported it now would be "more Wii U ports ugh" though haha.

My expectations for today were way lower, so in that regard they were exceeded. Lots of RPGs and anime things for fans of those. I think we're now truly beginning to see what a number COVID will have done on Nintendo's first party. Their strategy was already port-heavy, and now they're doubling down on that to get product lined up.
Those Famicom Detective games were initially announced as Japan-only for example and then pushed (for localizing, turns out). So to also see them wheel out Miitopia now makes me think 2021 will again see several  ports (although that's a 3DS game... so maybe Woolly World stands a chance after all).

Lucky for them Switch has a few tentpole releases already announced this year (Monster Hunter Rise, Fall Guys, and SMT 5 for the RPG crowd) so it's less obvious. Personally I don't mind ports, since it makes things available to new audiences (Outer Wilds for me in this case!), and there's more games out than ever anyway.

I'm not convinced that Nintendo are done with the Wii U ports, and there's still one notable one remaining: Yoshi's Woolly World. I think there's a good chance a Switch port gets announced tomorrow. It fits in well with the "Spring" theme.

Breath of the Wild 2 will be the closer since Nintendo wants to focus on titles coming out in the 1st half of 2021, and Zelda WILL be a November title since it doesn't have a release date already.

The Smash Character? I've got a good feeling about Rayman for some reason, though who knows these days with Nintendo & Smash. They wasted slots on Sephy and MineCraft Guy (yes, I know his name is Steve. I don't care). Nintendo's clearly out of fucks to give regarding Smash slots.

I think we get a new trailer & release date for No More Heroes 3.

I think Bayonetta 3 finally gets a new trailer & possibly a release date. We haven't heard about that game for a while, and unlike Metroid Prime 4 it actually still has a chance in Hell of releasing on the Switch.

A Pikmin 4 announcement wouldn't surprise me, considering 3 got a recent Switch port.

I think we see a new system added to the Nintendo Switch Online program, most likely the N64 or GameBoy.

I believe we're now in the 35th Anniversary Year of Zelda, so it's time to break out the Zelda All Star Collection in time to get pulled from all virtual store shelves 3 months later.

Honestly, I can't think of much else. There's so much Nintendo's been working on that we don't know about. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the much-rumored Switch Pro/Switch Successor get announced.

Clearly, my hopes for this Direct required far more effort than Nintendo was willing to put in. Pretty much a giant whiff of a Direct in general, at least for stuff that's coming out anytime soon.

At least we got Xenoblade 2 representation in Smash...finally.

Were your predictions things you were hoping for, or just expecting?
For me this didn't really whiff, but I can understand that reaction if you were hoping for BOTW 2, Bayo 3, and Pikmin 4. Sadly I think the latter of those won't happen until a Switch successor appears; Pikmin 3 Deluxe filled that slot. Similarly, I think Yoshi's Woolly World's port to 3DS unfortunately means it won't be on Switch anytime soon while 3DS games are still on shelves.  :(

For the Splatoon fans here, are y'all excited for a new one next year? The trailer made think it would be a spin-off initially, but unless it's a big overhaul I don't really see the point (besides money). That team has a crazy turn-around though: Splatoon (2015), Splatoon 2 (2017), Octo Expansion (2018), Splatoon 3 (2022).

snip

I was right about: Mario Golf, Fall Guys, Apex Legends, and about Pokémon DPP/BOTW/Prime 4/Bayo 3 not being there.

Wrong guesses: no indie reel, and most of the third party games I expected were absent (Crash 4, Persona 5 Strikers, Kingdoms of Amalur, Balan WonderWorld).

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will Nintendo release in 2020?
« on: February 17, 2021, 06:46:30 PM »
On the bright side, 2021 might be STACKED.

Not to be pessimistic, but I think delays will stretch well into 2021. I wonder if Nintendo will try to plug some holes in their line up, by releasing Brain Training Switch in the West, or perhaps translating the Famicom Tantei Club detective games.

If they want to keep up monthly releases, something like this could be feasible I think:
September: Pokémon Crown Tundra expansion & Cadence of Hyrule expansion 2.
October: Pikmin 3 DX, Animal Crossing update & Cadence of Hyrule expansion 3.
November: Detective Pikachu
December: No More Heroes III
January: Brain Training Switch
February: Bravely Default 2 (I'm thinking this gets delayed out of 2020).
March: ...Famicom Tantei Club??? (unlikely to ever get translated, but seems like something they could spin up now.)

Just dredging this topic back up one more time to highlight how right I was last August about the Famicom Detective Club games being a possible back-up to pad out the release schedule! Although my March suggestion was 2 months too early.

Does this set the record for earliest failed prediction?

Lemonade and I both said E3 would be cancelled, but I think they've already threatened to hold a virtual event in some capacity, so I guess that was earlier?
My predictions also contain a bold Olympic Games statement which has been both confirmed and debunked, so I guess for now that failure lives in an undefined quantum state?

- The Metroid fanbase will get pissed off with little to no action on Nintendo's part.

After consulting with all five Metroid fans I can confirm they have indeed been livid since January 1st.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Place your bets on Feb 17th Megatons!
« on: February 16, 2021, 03:26:32 PM »
Some fairly safe bets:
- Bravely Default 23 gets one last push.
- Monster Hunter Rise thanking their demo players.
- Smash Bros. announces a new character, detailed Mr. Sakurai TED talk later this month.
- Animal Crossing's March update detailed maybe?
- New Pokémon Snap shown again, still looking hella cute!!
- Persona Strikers 5 is out in a week, that'll be shown for sure.
- Balan WonderWorld will be there despite our protests.
- Apex Legends.
- Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning.
- Indie highlight reel: Thomas Was Alone, Anodyne 2, Cris Tales.
- It's About Time we see... Crash Bandicoot 4  8)

Realm of possibilities:
- New Kirby platformer from the Star Allies team.
- If No More Heroes III is a ~June/July release I expect we'll hear it here.
- Among Us gets exclusive Nintendo content, probably hats like Cappy.
- Mario Golf (or another sport?) gets a new installment.
- Fall Guys maybe?
- Dare we invoke Hollow Knight 2: Silksong?

Moonshot hopes and dreams:
- F-Zero NX (30 player online battle royale Death Race)
- Kirby Air Ride online CITY TRIAL packaged into Switch Online to replace Mario Bros. 35
- Nintendo reassembles Treasure, greenlights Sin & Punishment 3

Not shown:
BOTW 2, Metroid Prime 4 and/or Trilogy, Bayonetta 3, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl remakes. Those have Summer/E3 written all over them.
Expecting this Direct to be about their March-June/July slate, and the big hitters there are Mario 3D World, Monster Hunter Rise, and a Smash Bros. character. To stay on a monthly schedule, Pokémon Snap, Bravely Default, and maybe a Kirby and/or Mario Sports title are there to plug the gaps.

Nintendo Gaming / Final predictions call!
« on: February 16, 2021, 01:32:05 PM »
All right futurologists, this is your final predictions call!
If you have any last minute predictions for the year and wish to score delicious points 10 months from now, you have just over 24 hours left to submit them. Once the February 17th Direct makes landfall, this thread will live on as a catch-all repository for any major Nintendo releases.
Got any (additional) foresight for that specific Direct? Dump 'em in here!

All inside the Happening Bunker!

(OP has been restructured to chronicle this year's releases, let me know if it's confusing how I've got the hardware & merch section sorted by type rather than date of release.)

244
Of those Fire Emblem games, The Sacred Stones is more elaborate, with a world map and opportunities to replay maps to grind for XP. It also gives you the option to promote character into different classes rather than following a fixed upgrade path.
So in theory it ought to be the better game, but I also found the story and characters exceedingly dull. So I'd recommend the former over it, that story is still predictable standard fare, but told with more enthusiasm. Both games are decent though.

Also chucked some votes at Klonoa, although to be honest I'm not sure if they hold up. Those games are cheerful  platformers, and you usually need to use enemies to progress - like grabbing flying ones to gain altitude. Not nearly as involved as the GBA WarioLand games though.
I just feel bad for this franchise - it has a similar trajectory like F-Zero... In the sense it somehow saw like 3 GBA releases in a short timespan, and then pretty much fizzled out. I suppose the PlayStation game was remade/ported to Wii, but outside of cameos Klonoa has been a dormant franchise for well over a decade.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Best of the Wii U eShop (Bonus Round C: TG-16 VC)
« on: February 12, 2021, 01:20:53 PM »
For a while there I was pretty into these on Virtual Console; Turbo was one of those systems I never even heard of for decades, until the retro collection scene spotlighted them. They tend to sell for high prices, and there's so many different hardware SKUs and software formats it's a bit confusing... So VC was perfect for it.
That said, I think I just got lucky with my first few purchases, because there's a lot of junk on here too, so I've soured a bit on the platform since. Will spotlight the ones I tried:

(Pictured: New Adventure Island)
Platformers
- Despite Bonk 3 being the most valuable of the Bonk games, and exclusive to Wii U if you don't want to fork over $300... I don't know if it's the best one really. eJamer was saying Bonk 2: Revenge is the best of the bunch, but I didn't like any of these games. The first one is just outright pretty bad; it's a platformer with almost no verticality. Bonk 2 starts out a lot better, but all these games have too much combat with not enough attack range to defend yourself.
- In fact, hot take inbound, I've yet to play a really good platformer on Turbo which can go toe-to-toe with Super Mario Bros. or the first few Sonic games. Of the ones here I'd say New Adventure Island is probably the best, just because it plays well, has bright colours and you get to do things like ride a skateboard while flinging axes at dinosaurs. But I never bothered finishing it.

(Pictured: Bomberman '94)
Puzzles & RPGs
- Of the Bomberman games, Bomberman '94 is by far the best of those three. It's identical to Mega Bomberman on the Sega Genesis though, but has 5 player support here.
- Don't get Bomberman Panic Bomber, that's a falling block puzzle game like Puyo Puyo. If you must play this, at least do so on the Virtual Boy for novelty value.
- Necromancer is an absolutely impossible horror themed RPG. It's all in Japanese, has random encounters out the wazoo, and every direction you go is just brown, grey, or dark green. It's mildly amusing your party members turn into ghosts if they die, but resurrection costs money so it's easy to get stuck in a grind-resurrect-grind loop.
- Dungeon Explorer is a hideous top down RPG meant for multiplayer, localized by Working Designs. Enemies everywhere. I think you need to approach this with a D&D weekly session mindset, because it's exhausting. No idea where you'd be able to find 4 people to come over during a pandemic to play a 32 year old RPG with when World of Warcraft exists, but if that's you, then here you go.

(Pictured: Soldier Blade)
Shooters
- Lords of Thunder is the one with a lot of input lag on the Turbo Mini console, so might still be worth getting here if you're adamant about playing it. I've never played it. Very corny music.
- R-Type was sadly delisted, but it's excellent (and brutally difficult). Has a full remake on Switch called R-Type Dimensions.
- Of the other shooters listed, I think Soldier Blade is by far the best one. It's a sequel to Final Soldier and better in every way; one of those classic shooters which still play well to this day, like Thunder Force 3. Skip Gradius; it's on your NES Online app and very difficult, so at least there you have rewind. The TwinBee game here is probably good too, but there's also one which looks very similar on the SNES Online app and that has online multiplayer, rewinds, and more savestates.

(Pictured: Victory Run)
Sports & racing
- Moto Roader is utterly terrible. A top-down racer like Micro Machines, but without any of the charm, and it keeps zapping everyone back to the pack so there's barely any point in overtaking... in a racing game!
- Victory Run by contrast is decent. Plays like OutRun without the migraine framerate, but has hills, and you need to bring spare parts to drive from Paris to Dakar. Very hard though, I have trouble just making it past level 2. No automatic gear shifting either, so you can fry your engine if you don't pay attention.
- Power Golf has the same annoying swing mechanic from NES Open Golf. Don't buy this when NeoGeo Turf Masters is on Switch for almost the same price.
- I've yet to buy Break In, but it's a pool/snooker/billiards game like SidePocket with a sleazy synth soundtrack. Sat on my wishlist for a while now.

Conclusion
Trying these initially really felt like uncovering an alternate history for gaming. Where instead of platformers, shooters were the most important genre of the nineties, and instead of a focus on big sprites everything was sacrificed for fast framerates. It's a great system for both upbeat soundtracks and colourful games, as well as horror themed stuff (Splatterhouse, R-Type, Ghouls N Ghosts).
But a lot of the lesser known games have a bootleg rental store vibe to them. Admittedly I haven't tried some of the big hitters yet (Neutopia, Ys Book 1 & 2, Castlevania, the Alien/Devil's Crush pinball games), but I wonder if part of the Turbo's failure is due to lower quality games aimed at young audiences. I feel like I've tried a decent slice of the library, and so far only Soldier Blade, R-Type and Bomberman '94 seem like absolute classics - and only one of those was exclusive to Turbografx.

Vegas Stakes is apparently rated E for everyone with the MSRB, but has a 12 rating from PEGI.

Whenever I think about the concern over mature content in video games I just think of violence, harsh language, and sexuality. I don't know how much appeal there is for gambling with children.

Yeah, feels like this is a much more recent concern. Now that gachapon/lootboxes/microtransactions are becoming the norm (particularly on the mobile platform which exist beyond the ESRB's scope), we're seeing what I think might be the beginning of tighter laws on monetization.
In Hawaii for example there were legislators who wanted to limit EA's lootboxes in Star Wars Battlefront.

Just amusing to see how in the early nineties people were concerned about witchcraft, satanic content, gore, violence and foul language... But not gambling.

Color Out Of Space - 2019.

Threw this on because the poster looked cool, without really knowing anything about it. But this was genuinely pretty decent, although I could see it being divisive. It's a slow-paced cosmic horror flick about a meteorite landing in Nicolas Cage's backyard alpaca farm (no, really). Slowly the space rock starts to radiate a hypnotic ultra-violet~ish color which hypnotizes everyone around it and causes all kinds of horror stuff.

In terms of characters, motivations, plot, etc. none of this is new, but Madeleine Arthur is great as a teen daughter dabbling in witchcraft, and Elliot Knight plays the straight man role well - he's the only sane person,  a hydrologist caught up in all the madness. Nic Cage is of course game for everything, and while you only get 1 or 2 Certified Cage freakouts, he's good in a quite demanding role which has him slipping in and out of sanity, persona, accents, etc. on a dime.

Yes, you could definitely switch out the ominous space color for witchcraft or demonic possession to get similar results, but it was unsettling enough to get under my skin which is impressive since the antagonist is... glowing light? It's certainly a budget movie, but they hide their limitations well by keeping most of the (deeply grotesque) body horror out of the light, and there's a real permeating sense of dread falling over the farm through smart set dressing.

Heads up though: not for anyone with a light stomach, aversion to body horror, and mutilation. It's hardly a slasher movie bloodbath, but the few choice moments of gore are unsettling.
Rating: one Wicker Man out of MANDY.

Is the immediate market for this really in gaming, or is this another product they're also side-eyeing the vfx/movie industry with, like those realtime backgrounds for the Baby Yoda show? Looks impressive I guess, even if you need a Starship Enterprise to run it.

I also have Terraria since they never bothered to finish the Wii U version, which was a bummer and I wish I knew that before I bought it.

In what way is that version unfinished? Does it not run at all, or just missing some features introduced in other versions?

Vegas Stakes/Las Vegas Dream has a surprisingly useful soundtrack if you're putting together an elevator music mixtape. I've always been somewhat baffled by this game's existence; so it must be around 1992 when the whole Night Trap controversy kicked off and the industry fell under much closer scrutiny, right? The ESRB was founded in '94.

So Vegas Stakes, literally just a casino simulator on a children's game device with miiiiiiiiiiiild storytelling elements releasing in the middle of that (1993) really feels like HAL/Nintendo were pressing their luck. It got a 1995 GameBoy port too, but I've never heard anyone make a stink about that game.
I don't really know when casino-esque games fell out of favor in the post-pinball game of skill lawsuit era, but it feels like they were just fair game for a while still. When Aruze bought SNK they drowned the NeoGeo Pocket in slot machine & roulette cartridges, and the early Pokémon games had slot machines in them too around 2000.

If anyone has played some of these strategy games (Nobunaga's Ambitions, Ghenghis Khan 2, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 4) I'd be curious to hear about them. Did they use the SNES Mouse? Were they turnbased or realtime?
