General Chat / Re: Are you dressing up for Halloween this year?
« on: October 12, 2016, 11:44:15 AM »
I mentioned throwing a company Halloween party but there was no interest, the other reporters are all Baptists, one is a preacher on the side so Halloween didn't go over with them.

I won't dress up but I will be photographing a haunted house for the paper and watching my usual mix of gory slasher films.

A Texan who doesn't play football, not a true Texan, not a real American if you ask any Texan, trust me I don't play football and ever since I moved to Texas I have been told how I belong in Canada.

Crap I was supposed to walk away in protest for this absurdity. Of course most Texan's don't even believe they are a part of America anyways so to your point hmm...

At this point, I am salivating for a technical masterpiece that just blows the top off of gaming as I know it, because that's what Nintendo used to do. They need that killer piece of software that is going to hook people who aren't even considering Nintendo.

They actually have that, it's called Breath of the Wild.  The reaction to that game at E3 is the biggest Nintendo has had since the Wii, and that's from a demo representing less then 2% of the game.

The actual launch of the NX will be fine because of Zelda but the post launch is what will be most important.  Nintendo could have had an amazing launch this holiday with the NX and Zelda if they wanted to.  The problem is if they have another huge drought, which they probably would have that would have killed the systems momentum in early 2017.

The most important thing for the NX isn't the actual launch but the post launch.  They can't have periods of over 3 months with nothing again or else all hype will be fucked no matter how amazing Zelda is.

I just don't see it that way, and I don't think non-Nintendo gamers really see it that way either. On its own, Breath of the Wild looks like a fantastic game that looks to offer a little something different from other Zeldas and from Skyrim. The thing is that the game isn't much of a technical showcase since the Wii U can handle the game. This new Zelda is running on 10 year old hardware, right? I bet my LG G5 can run it! Seriously.

I want something that can only be experienced with the NX. Even the GameCube had graphics that were pretty much only found on GameCube. Super Mario Sunshine had that water! Loved that water! Wind Waker was cel shaded and had that vast ocean. That ocean was vast. Too much water! Metroid Prime boasted amazing graphics. F-Zero too. As well as Resident Evil. GameCube really was an unparalleled experience. It wasn't cheap hardware. It had potential waiting to be realized. And it was the system with faster load times.

Let's see NX offer a level of quality that the other consoles must strive to match.

I disagree with your assessement of Non-Nintendo gamers. believe it or not their are way more Nintendo gamers out there than not, if you remember to keep in mind the console does not represent the entire fanbase. That is why NX, if it truly is what we are all now expecting it to be, will be a massive hit if done right. Sony couldn't do it right because Sony didn't understand the purpose of the handheld. Nintendo does. Nintendo also knows how to scale their games better than Sony did.

The core Nintendo userbase is still roughly 60-90 million, if you combine the handheld sales with the console sales, that has been consistent every generation. double that for the DS and Wii because their blue ocean strategy worked.

Really NX is just Nintendo getting back to what worked in the past, from the sounds of it at least on the surface. Who knows it could very well end up being the end of them for all we know.

All of the adult novels were considered cannon outside of a select few (this is pre-Disney).

I am sure the Empire outlawed even the mention of Jedi, further helping to wipe them from memory. Can't be a part of pop culture if the media is forbidden to talk about it, right? 30 years would feasibly be enough time for them to become virtually "forgotten". Since New Hope was primarily from Luke's point of view, you can see how he would have little knowledge of Jedi since his Uncle refused to even talk about them.

It is getting a little dicey with the Jedi still existing to a certain capacity in Rebels. Jedi need to all be dead except for Yoda and Obi-wan for the purge to have it's full effect.

We do need to see more from the post-Return of the Jedi world to help broaden the world of Force Awakens. I would also argue that this is more reason why we need to see the Knights of the Old Republic/Tales of the Jedi/Tales of the Sith times come back. Rumor has it they may make Knights of the Old Republic cannon soon, which would allow the world to breathe a bit more without rehashing the exact same characters from the movies.

In addition to all that about Palpatine controlling the media, let's not forget he was a super powerful witch with mind control powers to wash over people a spell of forgetfulness. Okay not literally that but you know what I mean, he had the whole senate under his Sith powers, its conceivable that he could have use his Sith powers to make people forget the Jedi.

Also Obi Wan said, "Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine before he turned to evil, helped the Emperor hunt down and kill all the Jedi." meaning that it was well established the events happened in Obi Wan's lifetime. He was in his 60's at the time, so yeah 30 years seems about right.

To Stratos: yeah most of my comment was sarcasm but it was not in jest, I honestly do think Lucas was brilliant and that the haters are just butt hurt they realized the creator of their special magic story didn't have the same emotional attachment to it as they did. Hence why they use the phrase he raped their childhood, admitting they are butthurt by his actions.

Baseball I can get behind, true American sport unlike all those ugly fuseball imitators you all call "football" in lesser countries.

Real Americans play American sports, everyone else plays crochet, cricket, crochball?, whatever they call it. #rdjt ftw.

Yeah I lost it, time to walk away. Again...

Not that I am aware of no. I know you can change the settings in the console to display 720p and if a game supports that it will adjust. But my knowledge is limited just my experience with the 36 games I have, many of which do support 720p.

Can't play an Xbox without Halo, it's like the Mario of the console.

Wow nice recommendation there, I would have NEVER known to get Halo thanks for the super informative suggestion you are the smartest gamer alive.  ::)

Here is a tip, if you order McDonald's food get the french fries their top notch.
Hey! No one mentioned it! :@

Probably because it was such an obvious suggestion there is no chance anyone would buy an Xbox and not consider getting that game? Do you also tell people who buy Nintendo consoles to be sure and pick up a Mario game?

187
Well what I said was I want games that do not force motion controls, if a game supports the classic or pro controller then yes I am open. I am also open to motion controls to some degree but not a game like Red Steel or Wii Sports or anything like that.

I will be checking many of these out soon.

Au contraire Mario, Aussie rules, cousin to Gaelic football, was mentioned in this thread. I'm also choosing to interpret "gray soccer" as an elaborate pun for the Grey Cup. So unless I'm forgetting something, we've now covered all of the evolutionary lines of Shrovetide football (in English speaking countries at least).

Well I appreciate you thinking I was actually smart enough to make those kinds of connections. But your not right. Gaelic football is the only non-American sport I know by name, which I only know because I studied Irish Gaelic (the language) a few years ago.

As for the other thing, not even close it was a jab at Lucario.

It's actually brand new, bought it a month ago. But I am playing the game on the PS4 dumb ass so nice try.

Yeah I have a ton of downloads already from the Playstation store that all say PSP compatible, mostly PS1 games but a few PSN games, some minis stuff like that, which is why I am leaning towards getting one, I already have at least 45 games that I could put onto one if I get a large enough memory stick.

I am not sure if TV out is really a big deal to me or not. I have a PS2, PS3 and PS4 already so I am sure I can already get most of the games on it in some form or another. I just figured since I have so many games already that will work on one it wouldn't be bad idea to get one and then look for games that are exclusive or specific later.

I like Gaelic football better than American rugby.

Oh you are all talking about the gray British soccer not the cool Irish sport. Well fine then, I too am out, Phil wait for me.

... in memory of Gene Wilder.

Yeah right, nobody remembered the poor man until he died. I loved his early works but even I thought he had to be dead already, his death was just a shock because people were like "oh **** he was still alive?"

It's sad how he died but even the old timers who "remember" him likely forgot him he was out of the spotlight for so long.

Sorry just my observations.

I will quietly walk away now.

Star Wars had it going like that before Disney bought them. All of the book authors were collaborating together with some overseers at Lucasfilm to make sure all of the stories told a coherent narrative. It is even more aligned now that Disney took over because all of the comics, movies, shows, cartoons, and games are considered cannon.

So if they can do it with Star Wars, they can do it with Marvel. It would take a bit to realign everything, but it could be done.

Don't you come in here and remind people George Lucas is actually a genius when they all want to keep hating him for Jar Jar and Greedo firing a shot that never had any impact on the story whatsover. You keep those nice thoughts about Lucas off the internet where they do not belong.

196
Hmm, either this confirms what I already feared, there aren't as many quality games as I thought, or I am asking the wrong people because it seems like I keep getting the same responses no matter who I ask. I think I am going to maybe broaden my search to include PS2 ports but only if the Wii versions is truly superior, which I assume it should be, but it also has to be cheaper. Thanks guys I have compiled a good list to get me started.

I bought it for two real reasons. One as a cheap alternative to the expensive PS2 and way over priced Game Cube ports of the same games. Two, the Sega exclusives as I love Sega, minus that stupid cartoony skate boarding game, but yes Panzer Dragoon Orta is on my to get list.

I have only had the system for barely 2 weeks and am already up to 36 games and counting. I am surprised how cheap they are, I saw Taito Legends for PS2 at a game store, $25 bucks, I picked up the same game on Xbox at the same store, $6. That right there is number one reason I wanted me an Xbox.

I am kind of weird in my gaming style though. I like Nintendo, sort of, and I really love Sega, but I hate cartoony and cutesy games for the most part and am not that into quirky stuff. I despise Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Pokemon and hate all things that are made out of yarn or look like water color graphics.

As for exclusives, I am looking mainly at Mech games, sci-fi games, a few shooters, and the 1st party stuff. For multiplats I will always pick whichever version I come across that is the cheapest, regardless of content or quality, I just want the core game I don't care about online (those are all offline now anyways) and I am not into rhythm games or sports or racing games that much. Except I like some arcade racing games I am familiar with the ones to get.

Thanks for the discussions I am trying to get all this sorted out. Please don't be taken back by my bluntness I am not that tactful.

198
Sure they are, if you are just talking about Mac then yes Nintendo and Apple are on the same level, at least in terms of to the gaming community as a whole. Also one thing Apple has going for it Nintendo does not, phone companies lock people into those forever plans that promise you a new phone when they get released or offer you new phones at certain intervals, Nintendo has no equivalent of that.

I am thinking my next purchase is going to be a Sony PSP. I am leaning towards the 3000, the local game store has a couple for sale at a fair price.

I have never had one so are there any owners or fans of the system that want to give a new buyer some tips? This is going to be the last system I add to my collection for a while.

Now that I think of it, I never got to play much of Fable because neither rental store within walking distance to my apartment had a copy that I could get to work.

Apparently that is a common problem. I took everything back to the store and we tested I think four different Fable discs before we found one that loaded up. It's not the end of the world, I have the game on PC but its still one of the best RPG's for the system.
