General Gaming / Re: What is your most recent gaming purchase?
« on: September 07, 2016, 01:17:35 PM »
How do folks on here typically buy used games? I'm not in a rush because I have plenty to play at the moment, but I plan on eventually purchasing some DS games.

GameStop's prices appear to be uniform since they are online. If they are, and you can buy them that way, is there any reason for me to go into the brick-and-mortar stores unless I want to make an impulse buy? Or are individual stores able to set their own prices?

What about eBay? I've only made a few purchases on there and nothing recently. Are there bargains? Do I need to be regularly monitoring the site to get them? Or should I just wait until I want to make the purchase?

Any advice you can give is appreciated. I live in the northeastern US if that matters.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Sun And Moon Announces Photo Mode, Time Shifted Games

I noticed the twighlight on Alpha Sapphire tonight. It's so strange, I can't believe I just happened to be playing during the day when I crossed all those sunny coastal routes in X.

The 12 hour shift makes sense to me if Moon is set to the system clock. I thought it was the other way around at first.

This time shifting is interesting. Are the current games influenced by the system clock? I play games mostly at night on weekdays and mostly in the morning or afternoon on weekends. I don't remember any consistently corresponding effects in X or AS. I was planning on buying Moon, but since I will likely play it most frequently at night, a 12 hour forward shift will push my system time into morning play. That initially seems counterintuitive, you'd think if it were tied to daylight, you'd want to play Sun during the day. But I can't imagine that's what they are going for since I assume gaming habits are tied to age and family status more than anything else. Why push certain age groups towards Sun or Moon unless the content will vary substantially?

General Gaming / Re: What are/were your favorite gaming magazines?

It's not directly responsive since it related to tabletop games but I absolutely loved Dragon magazine as a child/teenager. White Dwarf was another one. I wasn't as into Nintendo when Nintendo Power became prevalent but the Offical Nintendo Players Guide was passed around my neighborhood like it was the Necrocomicon.

I missed this yesterday with college football starting, but I'm looking forward to the hex. I love the home-and-away league structure. I'm hoping to see a lot of Pusilic when Madrid and Dortmund play on 9.27.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Run the Series: Pokemon Main Series
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:02:20 PM »
X is the first Pokemon game I played and it is the only one I beat. I haven't played any of the post-game yet. I am a few hours into Alpha Sapphire and plan on beating that and Moon. I really love the series so far and I envision buying the DS games and maybe even Y, Omega Ruby, and Sun depending on what happens with the NX.

I enjoy the core monster hunting conceit and think the art design and music are fabulous. The monsters are fun and the environments are visually rich and interesting. There is enough wry humor to make the dialogue also enjoyable for adults.

The biggest improvements I would like to see are making the menus more efficient, speeding up all the text box sequences, and divorcing field and battle moves. My other request, providing in-battle type info, appears to already have been implemented in Sun & Moon.

Thanks for the update. It might be fun to play Moon and Corpse Party at the same time for a little light/dark juxtaposition.

So no Corpse Party or Tokyo Rumble news, huh? I was hoping to get one of them in before Dragon Quest drops in the middle of the month and sucks up all my gaming time. I thought CP was targeted for August and TR for September.

Despite how much I loved and played them, it wasn't my early home systems (Intellivsion, NES, TI & PC games) that fomented me as a gamer. It was the arcade cabinets (which I played as much in pizza shops or bodegas as I did in actual arcades) that really sucked me in. The brilliant sounds and bright colors were just so exciting and fun and are what I have the most nostalgia for. I have a long list of cabinets I have very fond memories of, but Tron, Wizard of Wor, Ghosts n' Goblins, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Punchout, Donkey Kong, Bezerk, Star Wars, Dragon's Lair and Spy Hunter were probably my top ten at the time.

Also worth mentioning, although it was terribly cruel in retrospect, was the arcade in NYC's Chinatown that had a live chicken you could plat tic-tac-toe against. I never beat it, but you could win a bag of popcorn if you did.

Great show.

That's my Mario. Some of you gentlemen were a bit rough on my beloved Intellivision, lol. It obviously doesn't hold up now, but it was my favorite console of that generation. Collecovision had the best graphics, but I only knew a couple kids who had them, and they never seemed to own many games. I don't know if it was a function of a greater price or less availability, but it seemed a problem. The various Atari iterations were more popular, but I thought the Intellivision had a much better game library. Not only were the graphics and game play better; it had a diverse catalog of genres for that time. Some highlights:

For the time, AD&D Treasure of Tarmin was an excellent approximation of the tabletop game, and it was a legitimately rich CRPG. It included rudimentary character design options, giving the players treasure items that re-calibrated stats. This effectively enabled nascent magic vs. physical attack builds. It also included stat grinding that increased your chances of survival in the more dangerous levels. It was a glimpse into how much permadeath increases the stakes, because you could spend hours building a character, but it would still be vulnerable to high level monsters. It added a layer of actual trepidation to the encounters, which was accentuated by the death screen you where instantaneously switched to when you received the fatal blow. The sound effect and little tombstone marker on the map were brutal, lol.

AD&D Cloudy Mountain was a fun adventure game that presaged Zelda. The over world had obstacles that could only be crossed if the player retrieved the appropriate item from a dungeon. It had an open world aspect too, because players could make strategic decisions about which items to retrieve. Each item type was guarded by monsters of different difficulty levels, and the randomly generate maps rarely required you to retrieve every item to reach the final boss. So you could often make choices about taking a shorter path with more dangerous bosses or a longer one that required you to clear more dungeons. The other really cool feature was that the game gave your graphical and aural hints about the location of monsters. The confined spaces, coupled with the high speed of the monster sprites, created an environment that rewarded players who tracked their prey through these clues. You could set traps, strategically choose which room to attack from, and if I remember correctly, even use stealth tactics to draw monsters away. I found this gave the game huge replayability and a greater array of gameplay options than what other games offered at the time.

Utopia was a relatively politically sophisticated competitive RTS TBS game that pitted players against each other as rulers of competing banana republics. The game gave you a continuum of strategies from the militaristic to benevolent all of which had appreciable in game consequences.

In addition to the games above that I felt were ahead of their time, the Intellivision had some really fun action, multiplayer, and sports games. In order, Tron: Deadly Discs, Space Battle, Pittfall!, Nightstalker, Microsurgeon, Star Strike, Dragonfire, Atlantis, and Space Hawk / Sea Battle and Armor Battle / Skiing, NFL Football, and NASL Soccer were my respective favorites.

The final fun thing about the Intellivision was that adults played it. I remember going to parties with my parents where the adults would play Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack and Horse Racing (with actual gambling on the side). It was kind of like the Wii era, but with a lot more booze and cigarettes. My uncle even competed in a NFL Football league that had a trophy and cash prizes.

Hooray! I'm excited for this. And interested to see what is shown and if it will lend more credence to the NX hybrid theory or show a potentially longer life span for the 3DS.

Me too. I say hopefully both

I haven't seen a release date for corpse party yet. Maybe they'll roll it out during the direct?

Portability is pretty much a must for me, which obviously is a safe bet. After that, a decent visual upgrade on the 3DS (the 720 rumor has me excited), a unified VC with the major games from all the previous consoles, and a more diverse software lineup including titles from major western developers. I like the touch screen controls, especially for menu navigation and inventory maintenance, but I'd like to see more tap-and-drag functionality.

389
I'm not sure how much to read into that. Roma had a pretty tumultuous off season, and the tie was 1-1 after the first leg in Porto. Roma had bookended straight reds on either side of halftime in Rome.

Lol at the soccer gods giving us a Barca-City matchup in Group C. Looks like Pep can't change City's luck with them getting yet another brutal draw. If they can somehow win this group, the hype train will be unstoppable, but that seems unlikely with how damn good Barca is.

Group D gives us another all-star clash with a Bayern-Atleti rematch from last year. If this were a ko match, I'd go with Atleti, but I expect Bayern's attack to be too strong for Atleti to keep up with over the mini-league. I didn't look in depth at the schedule, but that long trip to Russia could be a factor depending on how it fits in with their respective domestic campaigns.

Groups A, H, F are all deep, but I'd go PSG/Arsenal, Madrid/Dortmund, Juve/Sevilla without much worry. However, I wonder if gunners fans are sweating the fact that Basel dumped out United and Liverpool in 2 of the last 4 years. Obviously, this Basel is a different team, but it should help their confidence regardless. Wenger is already under immense pressure and it's only week 3.

Groups B,E, and G lack the star power of the others, but that could just mean it will be more competitive. Both Premier League teams were very lucky. Tottenham for drawing out of the 3rd pot a group they are favored to win, and Leicester for the rule change in which they were seeded over Arsenal and City (I like the rule change personally). I think Leicester would have nearly no shot of winning either A or C, and could have difficulty even qualifying for the ko round. This isn't a vintage Porto team, so they have a great chance at the group, and should qualify regardless. However, I think Spurs and especially Leicester really need to win their groups to proceed past R16.

I'm very late to the amiibo party, but I joined this past weekend with my first two packs of Animal Crossing cards. I was actually winding down on this game, but potentially being able to bring back my favorite villagers, or try out new ones, makes me want to reengage. I'm a big fan of the surly villagers, particularly Vladimir and Rasher. "Do you have something to say to me? Is it swine?" are probably my favorite lines of dialogue in a video game ever.

God that sandcastle is awful, just god awful.

I don't know, I think there is something cleverly creepy about it. The juxtaposition of an object associated with children with a ghost typing and an anthropomorphic screaming/wailing mouth is pretty cool to me. Especially when you add in the animation they use for ghost type attacks.

Edit- I like it even better after reading its description: http://www.pokemon-sunmoon.com/en-us/pokemon/sandygast/

Good call on the depth too and I think that tracks quality. I probably regret 75% of my mobile spending, lol. But I don't regret any of my Nintendo purchases even though I'm unlikely to play a significant number of them. The games are of sufficient intrinsic quality to make just having access to them worth it.

396
Just the original for me. I don't know if it's probable since the originals are all on the VC, but I've been waiting to play SMB:LL, SMB2, and SMB3 in case SMB: All Stars is ported to the New 3DS. I bought them, but then I heard about SMB:AS, so now I kind of want to wait in case that's one of the surprise SNES drops. I actually bought SMB Deluxe because I thought that's what people were referring to when describing SMB: AS, lol. I bought SMB World and played around with it a little bit, but not yet in earnest.

397
Win total over/under for the Jets is 7.5-8 on most sites I've found. I'd take the over (but not by much). The schedule is difficult, but it's front loaded, so I'm hoping for a late season playoff push on the strength of what appears to be a strong defense. Kind of like last year, but hopefully with a better ending.

Is there a college thread too?

Thanks! I had stopped gaming around 2007. TV play stopped being feasible and I had a laptop priced for word processing/internet browsing. I think I got a smart phone around 2009 or 2010 and started playing games on it. I liked it well enough, but I hated both tying up my phone and interrupting my games.

I was going on a long road trip two years ago and found the Retronauts podcast. That reminded me of how much I liked gaming when I was younger, and I started craving a more substantial experience. I tried downloading higher quality games on mobile, but I hated the controls. I was going on a different vacation the following summer, and decided to grab a handheld for the flight. I had a vague sense that the vita had a bad reputation, so I went with the 3DS.

I'm glad I did and I'm also really happy I found RFN soon after. Listening to it has increased my enjoyment of Nintendo, and the more I play Nintendo, the more I enjoy the podcast and the rest of NWR.

If those genres are your faves, then Nintendo has been under-serving you for years.  But you're right, Nintendo's console needs to serve a wider market with the software lineup.

In retrospect, it was partly a matter of perception. Everybody I knew in elementary school (whose parents could afford them) had a NES. Only a small percentage bought new systems, and those that did, got Sega specifically for Madden. I needed a PC for school, so I just played games on that until my roommate bought an xbox. My wife and a friend briefly owned Wii, but they only had games like Wii sport. I literally thought/assumed Nintendo was for children.

Now that I own a 3DS and have been exposed to Nintendo's post-NES work, I definitely enjoy it. I imagine I will eventually get a NX even if they don't expand their software catalog. But, I've already bought enough games to last me through 2017, so I could just clean out whats left of what I want on the 3DS estore, and put the NX money towards a gaming computer. I would much rather go low cost on a computer, and buy a NX that has WRPGs and the latest Zelda, Pokemon, et al.

 Link’s Awakening DX – 3DS VC
I finished my play through last night and really enjoyed the experience. The previous games in the series were firmly on the fantasy continuum, but LA has a more fairy-tale like tone. It works well with the game’s aesthetic and gameplay. The emphasis is squarely on puzzle solving and platforming over combat, to the point where combat is downright easy. It doesn’t detract from the game though because the complexity of the environmental puzzles would become annoying if it were as difficult to clear rooms in LA as in LOZ or AOL. The sequential dungeon-crawling structure of the game is similar to past Zeldas, but there is enough thematic changes to make it fresh. The story itself is surprisingly poignant. The fairy-tale tone also opened the door to some surreal elements which I think add to the game’s appeal. There are numerous easter eggs, the fourth wall is amusingly broken, and the NPCs are often interestingly idiosyncratic. It’s all executed well and adds a layer of cleverness to the game. LA is obviously revered and I understand why.

As an aside, I really like the introduction of the roc’s feather and would have killed for that in LOZ. The wizzrobes crush me in the last dungeon.
