General Chat / Re: Official NFL Discussion: The Miracle Of Festivus
« on: January 15, 2017, 05:44:07 AM »
This is the first time I've really gotten to see Atlanta this year. I was impressed. I don't like any of the teams left, but as a neutral I would love to see Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers trade possessions in the NFC CG. I'm not quite sure I could even watch a Dallas-NE Super Bowl.

I think a big factor for the high price point is the unfavorable foreign exchange rate to the Japanese Yen...

I hadn't thought about this angle. How are you factoring in the benefits of the strong Yen as an offset? I'm genuinely interested, not being argumentative.

Thanks, I didn't see that yet. Works out even better for me.

TalkBack / Re: Super Mario Odyssey Coming to Switch Holiday 2017
« on: January 14, 2017, 09:32:24 AM »
Cool that when explaining the history of the series, they divided 3D Mario series into 2: linear and open/hub based, with Galaxy 1/2, 3D Land/World being linear and 64, Sunshine and upcoming Odyssey being open

I heard that but your post really spelled it out. I'm very intrigued by Odyssey, but when my wife briefly had a Wii, Super Mario Galaxy didn't do it for me. Given its near universal love, I just assumed the genre wasn't really for me. I loved Super Mario Brothers, but it was largely because of what I perceived to be a subversive art design, and that was the only other title I played other than a few rentals of 2 and 3. But maybe the open world style will give it an angle I'll enjoy, so I'm even more likely to give it a try now. I plan on buy Super Mario Land for my 3DS for posterity's sake anyway now that the price has dropped.

Everton-City and United-Liverpool are great lead-ins to the NFL games on Sunday. I'll have two screens up for Sevilla-Madrid and Steelers-KC. I have to go in to the office today, but Leicester-Chelsea is a great lead-in too, especially with the Costa side show. And WatchESPN has three big games in the European Rugby Champions Cup's penultimate round. I love this time of year for football.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Forum Snap Poll: How Sold Are You on the Switch?
« on: January 13, 2017, 09:34:08 PM »
I can definitely be positive on the games for myself, and I always liked the hardware.

BotW and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 look absolutely fantastic. Skyrim is confirmed. I love the art style of Project Octopath Traveler and would be shocked if I don't get it. Those four, plus Shin Megami Tensei, are all hugely attractive.

I am Setsuna and Disgaea 5 are also likely buys, and I'll be keeping an eye on FIFA, Ultra Street Fighter II, Steep, Super Mario Odyssey, and Fast RMX. The last four are genres that don't typically interest me, but the games look so visually interesting I could easily be tempted.

My disappointments are only price and an a growing suspicion that I won't have the breadth of genre coverage I want with the eventual full library. But in truth, I'll end up buying more games than I'll play.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion (March 3, 2017 Release)

I was hoping with how the trailer was so obviously being marketed to non-Nintendo gaming demographics that they actually had products to sell to them. Maybe they do, but I doubt it so far, and with the price being so high initially, I doubt they'll be able to sell the convenience factor either.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion (March 3, 2017 Release)

That reveal presentation was just terrible. It won't sway hardly anyone to buy a Switch that is already invested in a PS4 or XB1.

It was so Japan-centric. They really should have done a completely different presentation for NA or maybe for both NA and Europe. Nintendo of America could have at least focused on things important to "western" gamers, like kick-ass, non-kiddie or odd Japanese-y games. "ARMS" isn't going to move consoles and "1, 2, Switch" looks shallow and potentially embarrassing yet they spent so much time on these games. Nintendo really needs to win-over NA gamers much more than Japan gamers, I think. It's like they took all the hype and good-will gained from the intriguing reveal trailer and let it slip away in an hour long balloon deflate.

So, bad marks for presentation skills. But what about the meat? Also not good news.

The launch line-up is sparse. The online is sketchy (involving a smartphone to use) and soon will cost money. How much? Who knows.
The tech is interesting and they focused on the controllers, a LOT, but rather like the Wii U, they didn't seem to have a showcase game that proved the business case for all the fancy things the controllers can do. And NA gamers are, I hate to say it, no longer interested in "delightful" new experiences that can be facilitated by fancy motion controllers. I love that they have invested in updating the tech for the rumble feature, that they introduced to console gaming in the first place, but what's the game that's going to showcase the feature? Beats me.

The price is too high. It is $50 too high. There is just no two ways about that. They have priced themselves out of "attractive second console purchase" territory. And there is no pack-in game. You MUST buy a game with the console or there is nothing it can do to amuse you right out of the box. No "Face-Raiders" or "AR Cards", no "Wii Sports" or Nintendo Land". Nothing. And games are expensive. Why isn't "1,2, Switch" a pack-in? Because Nintendo is trying to cash-in!

Yes, Nintendo is gouging us. A console priced too high, no pack-in game, online no longer free. And the accessories? VERY expensive. We all want a pro-controller. Well, your old one won't work so pony-up, Pony-Boy and I hope you stayed have gold! And the Joy-Cons are expensive if you want extras for the much-touted local-multiplayer features. And do you want a Joy-Con grip that also charges your controllers? Good! Pay-up!

So, right now, I am really on the fence about the Switch. That's why I have only pre-ordered 2.

I started the night with a lot of enthusiasm, became disappointed as the presentation progressed, and ended up with schadenfreude at the end. At this price (it's essentially $400 for a handheld and $500 for a console with a decent controller), and with this software lineup, I don't see it being successful with the demographics they postured as targeting in that original reveal trailer. I believe in the concept, but not this execution. I'll definitely be buying one eventually, but I see no reason to upgrade my 3DS in the short term at that cost and software lineup, and I certainly won't waste my time trying to persuade friends to buy one (let alone buy anyone one like I did with the 3DS).

This looks like the Zelda game I've been wanting to play since '86. I went into last night thinking Skyrim would be the main selling point of the Switch and I barely even care about it anymore. Well I do, but I'm guessing it won't be touched until after 100 hours of BotW.

Oh and was Zelda bathing in that video?  It sure looked like it.  That can't be right, can it?  Was she just wearing something tight and light coloured that could be confused for her skin?  Surely we're not going to have nudity in a Nintendo game!

I'm hoping it's one of the fairies from the pools of water.

TalkBack / Re: EA's FIFA Series Is Coming to Switch

So it doesn't look like it will be a regular numbered FIFA entry. So don't expect Ultimate Team or any of those features.

Is that definitive? I was hoping it was a placeholder for the next release.

TalkBack / Re: Arcade Archives Series Will Release On Switch
« on: January 13, 2017, 10:06:54 AM »
Nice, there are some fun games in the list on Wikipedia. I may even get a Rygar release, with the irony being that I would rather have the Arcade versions of the NES VC games I own, but in this instance I'd rather have NES than Arcade. I'm happy regardless.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Forum Snap Poll: How Sold Are You on the Switch?
« on: January 13, 2017, 07:49:11 AM »
I was already sold on the hardware but I'm disappointed in the price, and what looks like gouging on the peripherals has me borderline hostile. My experience with consumer electronics is that the stated ranges for battery life tend to degrade relatively quickly once the device is put into regular use, so I expected more than 2.5 hours for $400 (I'm including the price of a game obviously). So I'm still switched on, but I was hoping to be tempted to get it at launch, and now I'm thinking I will hold out till 2018.

And why would CONEMBOL even want them? If they split it has to be into a new federation that perhaps gets merged into OFC qualifying. But if they do that they almost garuntee that all their best prospects set up residency in another country. All you need to do is look at West Indies cricket to see what will happen. Nobody who actually cares about developing soccer in their country would ever willingly disengage from garunteed access to the US media market. This all seems like posturing because of the federal indictments.

166
I definitely see the soccer reasons why it benefits the US, but I think the overall soccer would be worse since CONMEBOL already has the best qualification tournament. Adding the US would definitely increase revenue, but it would degrade the soccer. And FIFA would be crazy to allow it. Too much of the total value of the World Cup is tied to the US market. It would add huge unpredictability into figuring out media/sponsorship rights. It would be incredible risky with the foothold European clubs already have in North America and Asia. The biggest threat to FIFA and UEFA is the clubs working out a side deal with the US, China, and India.

167
I would be shocked by that. The only reason would be to avoid US jurisdiction because the money would be astonishingly smaller.

I also don't see the US/Mexico, CONEMBOL, or the media companies going along with combined qualification. The US and Mexico are almost guaranteed qualification now, and why would CONEMBOL counties make their travel demands even greater. Safer to merge just the continental cup competitions.

Not only is the sword in the NES original not the Master Sword, it's not even necessary to beat the game.

True. That makes me hope that you can do the same in BotW. It already has been marketed with a heavy LoZ flavor.

TalkBack / Re: Shovel Knight Adds Switch To Platform List
« on: January 11, 2017, 06:52:27 PM »
I was holding off buying Shovel Knight on 3DS because I wasn't going to play it any time soon. Do you think customers who buy it on the Switch will get access to the 3DS game too? Or should I get it now to make sure I get the cross-buy?

Edit: Oh, I see, I misinterpreted the first sentence of the last paragraph.

170
Interesting. I was coming at this from the other direction. I was thinking over the long term that as battery life and memory capacity improves, something like the Switch will be replacing consoles.

I honed in on the Master Sword because I think "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this" is maybe the most iconic line from video games, and I think elevating the Master Sword, without retconning the first game, diminishes it. But so far I view these titles more as fairy tales/myths/legends than a serialized fantasy, so I'm anti-canon anyway.

Another potential factor for canonization is the residents of Hyrule being of some kind of fay race like elf or halfling.

There's one clear answer here, and it's the "Get 3 things, use them to acquire the master sword, and then get 6 more things so you can fight Ganon" setup. It's not like it's ever the same groups of things, so there's no canonical reason it has to be structured that way.

I'm only now making my way through OoT and later. What about LoZ and AoL. It wasn't until I played LttP that I understood Master Sword didn't just mean Link's sword. Did they retcon it in to earlier games?

You are already funnier than Scott Adams. And you have less dupe accounts than him too.

I'm going to wait to trash Derrick Rose in case him going MIA is because of something serious, but I hope this ends any talk of him resigning. Porzingis and occasionally Brandon Jennings are the only positive things about the Knicks other than the city and arena they play in. I like Melo as a person, but I was sick to death of watching him just standing there dribbling the ball into the court long before he even showed up in New York.

This is basketball nihilism.

Awwwwyeah Robotron! No joke, Robotron 64 is my favourite title for the N64. Really, really wanted Assault Android Cactus to be similar but its weird battery system had you playing that game in a very different way than how I prefered to play Robotron.

I checked out some game play videos of Robotron 64 last night and it looked like a lot of fun.

Robotron: 2084 felt like a successor to Wizard of Wor and Bezerk, all three of which gave off a strong horror vibe. Wizard of Wor was more of a fantasy/sci-fi mash-up, but Robotron and Bezerk were dystopian obviously. WoWand Bezerk had great voice synthesizer work which was a big part of creating that atmosphere. Robotron added that fast paced gameplay with great controls.

Midway Arcade has an interesting UI and tries to capture the cacophony of sounds a room full of arcade cabinets makes. I definitively take the time to move through the virtual space to listen to the hum rather than just accessing the games directly from the menu. I would love to see what they could do with a Switch. This is probably the answer to Kairon's question: arcade collections. A Midway Arcade, or anything similar,  that has individual save states for each game would get really excited.
