Nintendo Gaming / Re: Twilight Princess HD: Potential changes?
« on: November 13, 2015, 07:48:55 AM »
I agree that the game is already pretty solid and I can't imagine them changing anything that would make me want to buy it again.  The major complaints I hear are a) the intro is too long, b) bug hunting is tedious, and c) being a wolf is more fun in concept than in practice.  I didn't find problems with any of these things except the intro.  I would definitely like to get into the first dungeon a little sooner.

A couple ideas for minor improvements:
- Make the Ooccoo an item you get and keep.  I hated having to find it in every dungeon (I actually missed it in one dungeon).
- Limit Midna's hints.  There are too many moments that she explains what to do without even giving the player a chance to think about it.

Eh. I'm sure someone will post a couple side by side pics to disprove my following comment but, watching the Twilight Princess footage, it really felt like I was just watching the same visuals as what I played on the Gamecube all those years ago. It didn't really look that visually superior and it didn't strike me as much of a difference from what I remembered the game looking like.

It's not just what you remember.  I'm in the middle of playing Twilight Princess right now and it doesn't look any different to me either.

"The update is anticipated to...provide adjustments to the title based on player feedback."

Am I reading this correctly that they are going to change the name of the game?  If so, that is pretty hilarious (and also a pretty good idea).

Looks a lot cooler than I expected.

...and we have officially rolled back over to zero. "0 episodes since James has lampooned ALBTW".

But then that also sounds pretty damn cool.  Like you could buy this game and play it for years.

Isn't that what some people have done with Skyrim?  At least, I knew a guy who only played Skyrim for a whole year.

The idea of being able to play something for that long simply because the world is huge doesn't really appeal to me.  It's one thing for a game to have longevity because it's a masterpiece that you want to replay occasionally, quite another to have to slog through the world map just to find the next mission.  Most of my favorite games have ended just a bit sooner than I'd like making me want to return to it to later and find all the secrets, easter eggs, etc.

Also does anyone use their phone for gaming? I would be curious if there are any games worth getting on WP?

The reason I got back into Nintendo handhelds was my complete dissatisfaction with mobile gaming...but maybe things have changed in the last year and a half?

I want to report Lucariofan99's post to a moderator..... for some kind of an award of excellence and to use as an example of more posts we need to see around here. I love it! I'm absolutely in the same mind set as you. I think this might be your best post so far!

Yes. My favorite part of the poem was:
"But Nintendo's does try.
People would argue that but think about it."

I was also intrigued by the capitalization of "Horizon" in the last line...what could the author be implying about the relative importance of that word?

Finally, "...so Ian think before you post" deserves a spot in somebody's forum signature...

Bravo Lucariofan99

The times in this article are wrong.  According to Nintendo's website, https://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/0n1dYsV4Wq9TegID2IJyYqm17-0b8Uw1, the online servers will be up from 3pm - 5pm Pacific Time each day this weekend.

How about the Streetpass games?  Track your steps, get play coins....or else buy them in microtransactions.  If you have a 3DS, they will somehow link up.

I'm sad to see that guillaume wasn't satisfied by Zip Lash. I played it start to finish and liked it. Not a game if replay any time soon or go for that 100% but it's an amusing platformer.

Agreed.  Haven't quite finished it yet, but I'm still enjoying it despite its flaws.

One thing that wasn't mentioned about the "snacks" you can find throughout the game is how fun they are to view in 3D. Every snack you find is stored in your album that you can view anytime like the trophies in Smash.  You can spin them around and even unwrap them to see the food inside (and they look super realistic).

The progressive power ups felt like the biggest omission in the original package, so it's nice to see those get in there.

For me, the lack of checkpoints was a bigger deal.  There were so many long, difficult levels that I got close to beating but refused to play again because I didn't want to start from the beginning.  But yeah, progressive power ups will make this feel more like an actual Mario game.

113
I just finished the demo and the controls suck.  I totally agree with Enner....not interested in fighting the stiff character movements.  In fact, everything seems slow about the game...movement, cutscenes, even opening doors takes about 7 seconds. I know this is supposed to add to the suspense, but I feel like there is a better way to create suspense than by slowing EVERYTHING.

The camera obscura has so much potential on the gamepad, but I could not get used to having to look down, then up, then down again.

I know a lot of survival horror has been linear/on rails, but I just can't get used to being constrained to a dirt path through a forest in a beautifully rendered 3D environment.  I don't want it completely open, but just let me explore on my own.  This game goes from cutscene to flashing arrow to "x" marks the spot to shiny object on the ground.  Why do I even have control of the character at all?  I can't choose to do anything other than follow the one path through the game.  Trying to veer off in the forest brings up a dialogue box saying, "Oh, I don't think she went that way" in reference to the person you're trying to follow.

I'll leave the demo on my system, but highly doubt I will be purchasing this.

114
I find it amusing that the most favored of this year's big-publisher-horror games is the one that is "less of a game." Putting away the lame snark, Until Dawn's writing, execution, brevity, and what not are what will put it ahead of this latest Fatal Frame.
The ol' "less is more" effect.

I'm downloading the demo now--can't wait to finally try it out.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Sales Panic: September 2015 US NPD Group Results
« on: October 20, 2015, 09:51:14 PM »
Do we have a physical/digital breakdown of those sales numbers?  I am so confused because, whenever I'm at a store*, I see people buying games in the Xbox aisle and Playstation aisle, but the Nintendo aisle is a barren wasteland.  Does everyone buy 3DS and Wii U games digitally or what?

*Granted, this is a terrible data point.

TalkBack / Re: Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Review
« on: October 20, 2015, 09:47:12 PM »
The fact that reviews from other sites are all over the map doesn't bother me. That seems to fit nicely with the definition of "niche appeal", which is what everyone has been saying about this game for months.  I've always enjoyed atmospheric horror over anything that tries to weave a coherent narrative...and I love ghost stories. So, I'm looking forward to giving the demo a try.

The censorship doesn't bother me much (though I would prefer it uncensored).  I'm really confused at what NOA is gaining from censoring the bikinis, but whatever.

The system is not coming out in 2016...

I still cannot see it coming out in 2016.  There is only a single analyst in the article who is "increasingly of the idea" that it "might launch" in 2016.  The importance of the article is that dev kits are out already, and there is much more weight behind the idea of a hybrid console/handheld according to WSJ sources.  Also...industry leading chips?  That's pretty cool.

TalkBack / Re: Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash (3DS) Review
« on: October 11, 2015, 07:29:06 PM »
The game looks like a cute and delightful thing, but I'm getting the impression that it doesn't have much for experienced platforming players. If anything, it has a few annoyances for those players.

I picked it up today despite some of the low reviews and I'm glad I did.  The Zip-lash mechanic is extremely fun and fluid to use.  Is this game going to challenge or inspire those of us who grew up with platformers? Not really.  But I have already found a few tricky spots even in the first world.  Also, the collectibles are an absolute joy.  Normally, I'm not into collecting "all the star coins", but I love finding the candy in this game just to see which brands are featured.  This is definitely a "sit back and chill" game--which is something even experienced platforming players can enjoy occasionally.

Also, the destination-wheel-thing totally has been an issue for me yet.

119
Several more sites have posted gameplay footage (maybe the review copies are out?)  and I am really impressed with what I've seen so far. The English voice acting is OK, not bad, not great.  I'm trying not to watch too much though...as this game seems like it would be more fun if I knew as little as possible before playing.

My current rotation of games is:

Super Mario Maker, which is thoroughly depressing.

Why is it depressing?  Because it's hard to find good levels or hard to make them?

122
I'll revisit the demo and think about getting it.  In many ways, it was my favorite E3 nindie demo. I thought it would be exactly like Sonic, which confused me when I first played.  I remember having a tough time memorizing the controls and moves...but mostly because I was expecting them to be very simplistic.

So, I guess I might buy this now...because...I mean, what else will I be playing in November?  Seriously though, I wish they had moved it closer to the beginning of November for those of us not that interested in Yo-Kai Watch.

The thing that annoys me is that I keep trying to control the camera and make it scroll the screen up or down.  This has been in Mario games for a long time, yet it's taken out in the one that could really, really use it?

Agreed.  I especially remember it in Super Mario World.  That skin just feels weird without it.

I was kind of in love with it for the first two locations, and then partway through the clock factory I started to get impatient with the movement and pacing, and got really pissed off at the boss.

I loved the pacing throughout.  It was sort of a respite from the fast-paced games I had been playing at the time.  The only boss I really hated was the ice boss...it probably took me a dozen tries (or more) to beat it.
