Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 465: Pump Down the Jams
« on: February 29, 2016, 10:30:44 AM »
In playing birthrite on normal and classic mode and it's not as easy as James says. I'm playing to keep everyone alive and it's far more difficult than "self punish". Your decisions hold far fsr more weight. I restarted chapter 10 10 times last night cause I kept losing someone. That's not easy.

---

Obviously if I would grind more then it wouldn’t be a problem but still doing minimal grinding I find the game challenging especially trying to keep everyone alive.

So I guess if I grinded a crap load and didn’t care too much about troops dying then sure it would be far easier. So as it stands it’s a decent challenge even in normal playing classic mode and not grinding a lot. Which to be fair chapter 10 caught me off guard so I might have to raise some of these guys levels about 2-3 notches.

I guess everyone is different and while James seems to be Matt Damon in a beautiful minds when it comes to strategy games I’m finding the difficulty fine for sure def not a cake walk.

Also I’m digging my castle mode. Everytime a battle is over it’s great to take a breather and explore. I went into the hot steam bath and a girl was already in there and my avatar ran away all scared. Lol. Funny stuff. Gotta love Japan.

---

It sucks that Nintendo rushed Animal Crossing and Mario Tennis for the holiday season but that guy who wrote that email is forgetting something or overlooking it.

1 – he bought animal crossing thus answered with his wallet that yes this was ok.

2 – The holiday season is very important and Nintendo needed games out for it. No games out no money no money less games to pour into our beloved Marios and Zeldas we all love.

Nintendo is at a critical place right now where they are just holding forth until reinforcements come. Which means games like Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing are sacrificed in the short term for hopefully long term success.

Also I got Mario Tennis for my kids and not old enough to be super jaded angry internet people they actually enjoy the hell out of the game. Who would have thought!!!

Great show. I'm listening right now.

The Gamecube didn't look under powered on paper. On paper it had better specs than the PS2 and Rogue Squadron washed away any doubters right from it's announcement. Also Beautiful Joe looks worse on the PS2 just how RE4 did.

Gamecube looked under powered just in general with it's appearance and purple color and toy like appearance of the controller. Perception is a bitch and it wasn't able to shake it.

I still know people who swear the PS2 was the most powerful system because it could "launch rockets" and play DVDs. lol.

If they're going to make Link speak, it doesn't have to be volumes. Here's looking at you, Other M. However, I think it's important to note Zelda's staying power, and how the character already does have an iconic voice that might not work very well for dialogue.

Great answers and chemistry this episode. Having played an ungodly amount of Explorers in its first week of release (it's kind of tapered off a bit since I hit post-game), the appeal of the game seems to lie in its cyclic gameplay, as well as the variety in boss fights. I wasn't too impressed with the Eidolons at first and hoped they would mix the encounters up, but they eventually do just that in a way I wasn't expecting that ends up pretty cool. You also can, in fact, play around with your class and function as a different role in the multiplayer which is a neat thing to do in a Final Fantasy title where you're not controlling a party.

If any Zelda game has voice acting it should be done by the UK team. Their voice acting is not as over the top as NoA. The original xenoblade is pretty good.

Nintendo localization team really is in a damn if you do and damn if you don't here.

The "purity" pushers would argue that if the content was localized intact, the most probable outcome is that it would reach its intended audience with no fuss. That is something that I can at least partially agree with as a consumer.

However, Nintendo and its subsidiaries are a business, and I understand and respect that they have to be sensitive to the real possibilities of improbable and terrible things happening due to their products and services. Due to the exceptionally child-friendly image Nintendo cultivates combined with the wildly differing cultures in the markets they operate in, it's just a realty that Nintendo would be more sensitive with how their wares present themselves.
Yeah I mean it’s well known that Japan has something (lots) that wouldn’t fly in the west. Honestly the silly thing here is that we all love to death games from our childhood and those were probably even more heavily concord for the west or just by a stricter Nintendo at the time.

We didn’t know or care at the time and we played the game and loved it to death. Now all of a sudden that the internet is here and we have news that face touching has been taken out or a 13 year old digital girl has been covered up we have people up in arms.
If we didn’t know about these changes it wouldn’t have mattered and none of these changes would take away from the enjoyment of the actual game.

Nintendo leaving the face touching for marriage is a happy medium for the west. Not sure why hate on his decision. Everyone and I mean everyone knew the face thing was coming out for the west. Being able to get all the conversations and still do the face touching in some form in a way that make sense is as best as we can hope for.

Nintendo localization team really is in a damn if you do and damn if you don't here.

Yeah that would make sense. I didn’t know the situation in Europe and if James said Europe then that’s my bad I missed that part.

Radiant Historia is another one James was off about. That game launched in limited quantities as well then a steady stream of restocks came and then it’s been in stock ever since sold by amazon. 25 bucks right now.

Great show as always.

James you said last story was low print and then hard to find. That's not true. The initial release was low print but then due to demand it was very quickly restocked and it's been available on Amazon by Amazon at the same price of 30 dollars since launch and still. The special edition was available for a bit too.

Go on Amazon and you'll find it in stock by Amazon 30 bucks right now.

James your game remind me of a game called Airport or Airplane I think. It's a mobile game where you have to manage air planes in an airport. Ever heard of it? I think it came out for the DSi too.

My last hotel ran a halfway house, this was not advertised in the listing. I hope you've been around long enough to hear all our long-running LA jokes during various E3s.

Halfway house? So what's the problem? Lol.

I know I'm joking myself. no one actually lives in the city of la! Duh. If you have money you live by the beach. :  )

Which I don't. : /

Great episode guys!
Couple things.

I was one of the ones who gave you guys a hard time in this forum about really dismissing Splatoon somewhat. Gui was really the only one defending it and everyone else was pretty down on it. Glad you guys turned around on this great game.

I’m 100 into X myself and man probably one of the most addictive time sink games I’ve played in a long long long time. It’s crazy and shame this game is completely getting over looked for GOTY. I emailed you guys about this I think.

Yoshidious –

Do I still have the distinction of having made the stage that best utilizes Yoshi’s NSMB skill set? Yoshi Floating Island. : )

I played Mario Maker for 90 hours like in 2 months and then all of a sudden stopped cold turkey. I saw this comment you left on my level and gave me the urge to go back and start creating again.

Again great podcast guys!

PS. LA sucks? I guess perfect weather 99% of the year, near by beaches, mountains (anything really) and the center entertaiment of the world is a huge drag.

: P

137
I'm 40 hours in so still a long long way to go on my part so I'm not gonna disagree with you. But so far I haven't been bothered and I do smile now and then when I hear the after battle comments.

Tatsu isn't really a huge bother so far. The music in new la is grating for sure. Now that's a pain in the ass. I don't even mind the battle music too much but God new la. Which is weird cause the world music ranges from ok to pretty darn good.

138
I actually really like the Tatsu jokes. lol.

They are sort of charming and make me smile when I hear Lin poke fun at him. Come on guys get a heart!

@Kobeskillz I haven't started playing yet, but this 'ticket' business sounds important! I'll be looking into that ASAP.

Trust me this is a life saver! Instead of wasting 3 hours looking for one item for one simple mission that time is better served completing squad missions for ticket rewards. Much more fun and useful.

Hey guys I use the ps4 and vita connection for like walking dead season one. Works good on those games but unless you have a super fast connection  (which I don't) or for some reason love to play games with input lag (which I don't) then that feature doesn't work for every game or everyone.

Playing a bayonetta 2 on hard using the vita would make me want to cut myself. So there lies the problem.

I hear you say Lin kept over over to piss the boss off.

You can press X and command them to stay with you.

Also the tickets save you tons and tons of time because you can buy almost anything you need to finish a mission that needs a harvest. So instead of spending hours and hours looking for those times spend that time completing division missions for more tickets. :  )

Yoshidious I can’t wait to go back and replay your levels with the added check points.

I personal  thought you had some very very clever and well thought out levels. I mean ingenious at times in how meticulous they were.

Though the difficulty got away from you which prevented only but the most stubborn or skilled from enjoying most of them.

There was one in particular which was a ghost house one that I never figured out. It had to do with P switches and coins. Wasn’t so much difficultly but me not being good enough to figure out the puzzle I guess. I always wanted to go back to that one for one more go.

James do you like Wind Waker? I though Ive heard you say you like it. You hate link between worlds because it’s easy but I honestly find Wind Waker even easier!

Though the Hero mode in the remastered edition was nice.

Just so weird that you dislike that game so much. It was such a fantastic game with beautiful

Though is still not close to Zelda perfection Link’s Awakening.

I forgot I had sent that Amiibo email. I sent that out of frustration when I completely missed on the last wave.

I know you guys aren’t into Amiibo but if you are and you check the stores every time you go to them you would see just how bad it is. Literally you only see Mario or the same bowser or Luigi. For the past year!!!! I live in So Cal (LA) so it’s not like I live in a small town or anything.

The only people who are excited about some Amiibos getting restocked are scalpers because I bet you anything I won’t see a single one of those re stocked
Amiibos in stores.

Also Activision and Disney don’t seem to have a problem stocking their toys. Seriously their section is always jammed packed. I don’t buy the whole US being harder to distribute. I sure it is but that doesn’t seem to affect their competitors.

This just illustrates yet again how terrible NoA is. They have been complete garbage for a while now. Makes me want to move to Europe. Lol.

Just as I mentioned I found the look of the enemies' motion in the New SMB set slightly bothersome, I explicitly said the enemy frame rate was a "really trivial" issue. It was merely an observation from my experiences playing the game without a negative tone attached to it, properly contextualised and made in a lighthearted way largely at my own expense rather than the game's.

I’m amazed you can spot that.  I went back to the game and tried to noticed it and couldn’t.  Though one thing I do wish the game had was Mario 3/World style boss fights where you stomp their head 3 times and then you pass the level.

I made this level specifically for you.

Yoshi’s Ultimate Sacrifice…

7204-0000-005b-9340

You had to put lava in there to make Yoshi's (repeated) demise all the more heartbreaking - not even Neal did that!

I heard the podcast where you guys mentioned Neals ideal and even IGN on their pod cast mentioned his idea and one night I had a dream about doing something similar (it's a great idea) but with lava to see Yoshi go down like the T-1000 in Terminator 2.

Then the Axe coming down at the end of the level is the cherry on the Yoshi corpse cake.

This is a silly reason to not get the game. The Podcast like RFN fashion concentrated more on what’s missing/wrong than what the game does right which is a WHOLE  lot.
Whoa, is that true? That's not how I remember the discussion going at all! I need to listen to it.

It seemed like the discussion at times went more that way.

Maybe the 30 frames goombas and friend list and search modes and missing features discussions stick out more.

I feel you guys could have touched more on the gamepad and how this game really highlights the gamepad and its features. It was briefly mentioned how it's a mostly off play game which it is.

Also while some stuff is missing the stuff that's in there is great and Nintendo did an amazing job tying it all together and also how damn easy it is to start.

I also think that the reason for 16 digit codes is so it doesn't limit you with level names. Without the codes you wouldn't be able to name two levels the same. You would get a lot of this name is always taken add a bunch of numbers to make it different.

I never said you were stupid. Lack of knowledge doesn't mean stupid.

Though i'm baffled that anyone would ever think that Metroid controls better than SMB. But it's all opinion I guess.

That trampoline part in world 3 is hard as hell and i still don't nail it 100% but man it feels good when you get it and it's all skill. You don't get in between those blocks by accident.

Yeah the reward might be coins but you tend to forget that in the original Super Mario Bros coins actually MATTER!

Sure now that the game is older and you know every single 1-up and every warp pipe maybe coins don't matter as much but when this game came out it wasn't a given that you would beat the game with the lives you had.

This isn't New Super Mario. So you had to stop and collect every coin and break every block looking for coin blocks or even the rare (back then) 1-up!!

Most people who played this game in context of when it came out will probably see it the same way.

I'm glad we're at least cool and all. I probably killed a lot of my credibility in this exchange, huh?

Ah maybe I'm too sensitive about this. Super Mario bros was the first ever game I played back in 87. It holds a very special place in my heart.
