General Gaming / RE: PSP Delayed
« on: February 26, 2004, 06:16:26 AM »
Again, you can use the news submission form on the site if you're looking to give us tips, but we wouldn't report on the PSP delay.  I'm moving this to Other Systems so people can talk about it.

We have a news submission link on the site for this kind of thing, but you'll need to back it up with some kind of source on the info.

TalkBack / November Sales Figures

Huge numbers for Mario Kart and GameCube sales.

DID YOU KNOW?

<small>November TRSTS Update

December 16, 2003 - In the race to be the best-selling video game this holiday, only one competitor can get the checkered flag. In November, that game was Mario Kart®: Double Dash!!™, exclusively for Nintendo GameCube™. According to NPDFunworld's November Toy Retail Sales Tracking Service (TRSTS), approximately 528,000 copies of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! were sold, easily besting any other video game on any system.

This feat is even more remarkable when you realize that Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was in stores for only 14 days in November, following its launch on Nov. 17.

Additional Nintendo highlights from the November TRSTS data include:
  • 754,000 Nintendo GameCube systems were sold in November, making it the best-performing month in the system's history. The strong sales propelled Nintendo GameCube past Microsoft's Xbox in year-to-date sales.

  • Sales of hardware and software for Nintendo GameCube have increased at a faster rate than either of its console competitors so far this year.

  • Console sales, YTD versus 2002

             o Nintendo GameCube: +61 percent
              o Xbox: +5 percent
              o PlayStation 2: -36 percent

  • Software sales, YTD versus 2002

             o Nintendo GameCube: +60 percent
              o Xbox: +59 percent
              o PlayStation 2: +21 percent

  • As for Game Boy® Advance, more than 1.3 million units were sold in November, beating the nearest console competitor by more than 50 percent.

  • When combined, Nintendo hardware accounted for 57 percent of total hardware units sold in November.</small> Please Reply Here

By the way, there are no image tags if that's what you're trying to do.

Well, you've got to love the work too.  I have naturally writing and administrative skills that cannot be stopped by lack of pay.  Although I often wish I could just ditch the day-job.  It's a good job and I'm good at it, but I'd rather be paid for doing this...  anyways this is off-topic................

Actually Nintendo was the publisher of Sword of Mana.  Brownie Brown (who developed the original games) was the developer.  Square probably didn't do much with it besides oversee BB.

In-between the cactus and the stones, you have to go down the right wall and cast a spell on a rock formation.  You have to go in order for it to work.

I don't have the US version yet.  I used my Japanese skills somewhat, as well as a few import guides from GameFAQs etc.

The site does bring in enough to support itself, but it does not bring in enough for us to pay anybody, including senior staff.

You can get through that temple in single player just fine.  There are a couple optional (I believe) puzzles that require some really tricky coordination with your moogle.

The fifth element is in Lynari Desert.  I covered it a bit in my review, but basically you wander around the big section of desert casting various spells on rocks, cacti, and the like.

I haven't invested in other systems simply because I don't really have time to play all the GC games I get.  However, if I did have multiple systems, you can bet I'd be looking for the best version every time.  Most ports get the shaft, and I'd rather have one done by the original team than some half-finished product that was sent to a port team to re-code.

Speaking of shafted ports, last night, one of my friends rented several copies of Wolfenstein for Xbox, since it said it supports 16 players.  Well, after spending half an hour trying to set up a six player game, we went to the website and learned that there's absolutely no split-screen mode and if you want 16 players, you're going to need 16 Xboxes.  Now I know this isn't something the PC version had or anything, but from a console gamer's perspective, it's absolutely ridiculous to require anyone to have access to that many machines.  So anyways, we went back to eight player Mario Kart (which despite it's shoddy implementation, can at least be done with only two Cubes.)

We really don't focus much on polls.  I don't know how many months it's been since we did the last one.  It's not important enough for us to stick them on the main page, and I only added this because of my personal curiosity and users requesting new polls.

As far as poll threads go, those are a different story. All they do is junk up the forums, leaving people searching for good topics.  Plus, the polls tend to be made by new users and almost always ask the same questions.

I'd say that for this, probably not.  I'm interested in seeing what systems you're buying games for, but if you think you'd buy Xbox games to play over there, you could vote.

I haven't anything along these lines, but Square sucks at re-releases.  The only good one I've played is Final Fantasy IV on PlayStation.  The other games had big problems with load times and audio.

Click the "view forum polls" link at the top to vote. I'm interested in seeing how many of you own just GCs since third parties seem to think that they can just wait a couple months to release the GC version and then get surprised when it doesn't sell well. I can't say we'll do anything with information, but you crazy people wanted polls so here you go.

Eh, we've known that they've done that for ages.  Denis Dyack posts here on rare occasions, and Giles Goddard randomly answered questions about Doshin the Giant while he was still working on it.

    End boss strategies
The trick with all three bosses is just a matter of artful dodging, so I can't really explain my techniques perfectly.  Also note that since I did single-player, trying to pull off some of this as a group might not be so easy.

I will say though that with the first boss I'd always take out one of the sunflowers before attacking. It's second form, I would keep moving until it attacked, and then I'd counterattack.  It's third form, I did practically the same thing, but I kept to the far left of the screen.

On the second boss, I take out only the larger of the regular enemies, and then I taunt the second one into attacking so that it stops momentarily and I can attack the boss.  I alternate between dodging the little punk, going in for a couple hits, and then backing out before the boss shoves his belly in my face.

On the third, I keep moving and avoiding its attacks until I get a chance to cast cure and recover the spells from the floating family members.  Then since the spells are unnamed (at least they were only marked "???" in the Japanese version) once I gathered a few, I would find shots to try them out on the boss until I ran across the shield.  Since the shield protects you entirely, you can whack at the bottom portion with your weapons, saving your big spells for when the top portion comes down for a good beating.
