Oh I'm not done yet.  I have a few days left here. Doing pretty good. Went fishing with my mom and my brother today and got a nice sunburn on the back of my legs.

Not really secret, but I couldn't withstand the urge to create that title.

This is the last you'll hear from me before I get on the plane. If I can, I'll try to update from home as things go up.

Thanks to everyone who's kept up with my little stalker thread for the past eight months. Have a Merry Christmas!

Yeah, I'm flying out Wednesday, so someone else will be covering the bases on VC Mondays. There are some other things I've worked on that should go up while I'm out of town.

General Gaming / RE: Burnout Paradise
« on: December 16, 2007, 07:29:11 AM »
I reworked my post into an entry for my blog, so here's an edited and more comprehensive response:

So the Burnout Paradise demo came out this week, and I've probably put close to eight hours into it now. I've exhausted everything that's there. I've done big drifts, power parking, barrel rolls, jumped off buildings, found all the billboards, shortcuts, and jumps - the whole nine yards.

I never got to play Revenge. Even though Burnout is my favorite racing series, I agree that the games are coming out too often. In any case, Paradise is definitely something different. The free-roaming puts the emphasis more on exploration and using the environment to pull off big jumps and stunts. And since there are only a handful of events available in the demo that focus is emphasized even more.

I downloaded it on both the PS3 and 360 to see how they compare. There's a bit of difference in the colors and lighting, but aside from that, they're pretty much identical. For those of you that own both consoles, I think this one's going to come down to controller preference.

Last night I played online with the 360. The interface is really smooth. You just open up a mini-menu while you're driving, and in less than 10 seconds the other players are dropped into the same map. It was a lot of fun just roaming the city, smashing into each other, competing for the best scores, and going for crazy goals. We were laughing our heads off, and one of the guys was pissed because he couldn't figure out how I got 100% on power parking.

I love it for what it is, but as a Burnout fan, I have a wish list of things that I can only hope are in the full game:

1. There need to be areas with a lot more traffic - why is the freeway empty?

2. I want crash junctions back, since that is the most fun we've ever had passing a controller around the room.

3. I want replays back. The first game had an awesome crash replay system that let you revel in that moment, and now with Halo 3 and a lot of other big games letting you upload and share videos and screen shots, Burnout needs to get back in that scene so I can show the world the wickedest, craziest crashes, not to mention some of the out of the way stunts you can do now.

But even if those things don't make it in, this is going to be one awesome ride, and I'm definitely picking it up in January. Here's a bit of gameplay from a run I did Friday morning:

I fear for you.

It took us a little while to get this going, but we've finally made the horror available for all to see.

Burnout Paradise, Demo Crash Montage
We passed the controller around a lot, so I don't remember which crashes are mine anymore.

A pretty big name? I hope it's not bigger than DS Kageyama Method: Tadashii Kanji Kakitori-Kun - Kondo wa Kanken Taisaku Dayo! because that name is already bigger than I know what to do with.

I'm amazed at the amount of voice work that is in there. They kept talking through most of the lines in the first 45 minutes of the game. I'm sure pretty much all the major plot points are voiced, but only some of the skits.

Ok, so I don't normally post the links to these, but this is amazingly clean for video on the DS.

I know, it's weird. Hopefully the time frame will get ironed out next year since there isn't much competition in December. It's probably better than just leaving Zelda out of both years though.

I'm not on the panel of judges (but I think Chris Kohler is). I just wrote the script. I have no idea who the winner will be.

I think it may be an issue with TV compatibility. I have never run into that problem and I've recorded every NeoGeo game released on VC through component cables.
