MARIO AND DONKEY KONG RESTOKE THE FIRES OF RIVALRY

17th September 2004 - Two of videogaming's biggest stars return in this fantastic mix of platform and puzzle solving action. Players can challenge their reflexes and their brain as Mario comes up against Donkey Kong once more - this time with a full range of acrobatic skills and a collection of Toy Marios to help him. Mario vs. Donkey Kong launches for the Game Boy Advance across Europe on 19th November 2004.

This Pak will contain a special Mario Game Boy Advance SP and a copy of Mario vs. Donkey Kong. The unique Mario Game Boy Advance SP will be the first 'two-colour' Game Boy Advance SP to be released in Europe, with a silver base and a red top featuring a stylish Mario 'M'. The Mario Game Boy Advance SP is exclusively available for Mario fans everywhere in this Mario Limited Edition Pak.

The all-new action adventure begins when Donkey Kong sees a TV advert for an exclusive new toy product, the "Mini Mario". After rushing to the store, he finds they have all sold out so he takes things into his own hands. The infamous ape breaks into the Mario Toy Company, stealing the newly made "Mini Mario" toys straight off the production line. However, it all goes terribly wrong when Mario turns up to give chase - will he retrieve his stolen toys?

The adventure ensues as Mario must overcome the mind-bending obstacles of girders, platforms and elevators, as well as fending off familiar enemies such as Thwomps, Shy Guys and Piranha Plants to find keys and reach the exits. With six different areas and over 100 puzzle-filled levels in total, Mario has a lot of ground to cover! But fear not, with a range of acrobatic moves including handsprings, back flips and somersaults Mario is sure to find the stolen Mini Mario's in no time at all.

In the penultimate level of each area, Mario must lead a group of six toy Mini Mario's to the end of the level. These Mini Mario's follow the real Mario very closely and it's up to players to ensure their survival. The number of Mini Mario's saved means more hits for Mario in the Boss level - a fight against the arch rival himself, Donkey Kong.

GBA is getting a new Goemon game in the bunch.

Yesterday, Konami revealed its TGS line-up, including a number of PS2 games, three PSP games, and four GBA games.  The GBA titles are:

  • Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django
  • Croquette! Great Jikuu No Boukensha
  • Ganbare Goemon Kessaku-Sen! Yuki-Hime To Magginesu

Crazy spinning puzzle action is coming to a Japanese GameCube near you this October.  Oh and there's a mini-site with all the goodies.

Nintendo and Eighting's wacky spinning birds are back for their first outing on Nintendo GameCube which looks to have multiplayer and GBA connectivity features.  In anticipation of this hot October release, NCL has put up a bit of a webpage about the game. There are Heririn of all sorts with flamethrowers, paddles, and boxing gloves, and judging by some of the screens, you might just need them since there are some pretty major boss-looking characters too.  Multiplayer screens show off both battle and race modes, so get on over there and check it out!

TalkBack / New Gamer TV Show Airing in the UK in November

When Games Attack, starring Dominik Diamond to air on Bravo.

DIAMOND SPARKLES ON NEW GAMER.TV SHOW

Gamer.tv announces When Games Attack, a new show for Bravo hosted by Dominik Diamond

Gamer.tv today announced the November launch of When Games Attack, an all-new video games TV show for Bravo, the UK's leading men's entertainment destination, hosted by games industry legend, Dominik Diamond.

When Games Attack will be a knowing and credible video game series that reflects gamers' passions and their desire to be entertained and amused.

"People have been talking about it on the Internet saying it's the 'Son of GamesMaster' but it's a lot funnier than that," commented Dominic Diamond. "It's so good, I'm soiling myself now just talking about it."

"A lot of people have very fond memories of GamesMaster and so much of that is down to him," commented Richard Wilcox, Executive Producer of When Games Attack and fellow GamesMaster alumni. "Viewers love Dominik. They love his wit, his mischievousness. He didn't just make people watch video games TV for the first time, he gave games a credible voice and face, whilst also pulling in an audience that didn't give a damn about Sonic or Mario. He did for games on TV what Jeremy Clarkson did for cars, though I'm sure he won't like me saying that. It's just great that the champ's back."

Apart from Dominik teasing games journalist Dave Perry, one of the highlights of GamesMaster was its location reports.

"We're glad to say the tradition of Dominik travelling the world to meet the strange, the glamorous and the downright frightening continues in When Games Attack. We've just finished filming a series of features in the US and I can definitely say the old magic is still there," commented Jonny Ffinch, Series Producer of When Games Attack, and another GamesMaster old boy.

When Games Attack will be co-hosted by Caroline Flack, who presented Bravo's football reality show Fash FC and also Bo Selecta.

As well as the roving reports, each episode of When Games Attack will include the following:

    'I'm Famous, Give Me a Joypad' – a series-long celebrity football tournament.

'Behind the Game' – a special game review section where two rival games from the same genre go head-to-head in a three-round slugfest to determine who is numero uno. This section is rumoured to include Dominik interacting with puppets.

'Bunch of Five' – a top five chart on an aspect of video game culture or history, including 'five Hollywood stars who wished they'd never appeared in a video game' and 'five most stupid video game plots'.

With over 4.8 million male viewers, Bravo will be replacing the long-running GamePad with 20 x 24-minute episodes of When Games Attack. When broadcast alongside the existing weekly magazine show Gamer.tv, it affords the production company a whole hour of daily exposure on this high profile and popular channel.

"Bravo has been looking to shake up its gaming content and begin to build its presence and ownership of the gaming genre - an area that we feel shows great potential," commented David Clarke, Channel Editor, Bravo. "Gamer.tv has proved efficient, knowledgeable and fun to work with. Their ideas and passion for gaming are plain to see and following the success of the acquired series 'Gamer.tv' we have commissioned Gamer.tv to produce our new flagship gaming series."

When Games Attack will be produced by Gamer.tv, hosted by Dominik Diamond and broadcast on Bravo in November 2004.

A When Games Attack feature can be found in the latest issue of Pixel, the Gamer.tv newsletter.

TalkBack / RE: Apocalypse Soundtrack Available This Month
    « on: September 14, 2004, 06:57:20 AM »
An interesting bio on the composer, Jeff Danna.

FROM THE GOSPEL TO THE GRAVE

JEFF DANNA SCORES #1 FILM, "RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE"

SCORE ALBUM AVAILABLE ON VARESE SARABAND

(Hollywood, CA): Composer Jeff Danna scores the Sony Pictures release, Resident Evil: Apocalypse which has exceeded expectations by opening at #1 with an estimated $23.7 million. Score album available September on Varese Saraband. Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the latest from the composer whose credits include The Boondock Saints, O, The Kid Stays in the Picture and the critically acclaimed The Gospel of John.

This follow up to in the popular action/adventure feature finds Alice (Milla Jovovich) escaping the deserted Raccoon City Hospital, racing the clock and the undead to rescue a little girl (Sophie Vavasseur). The film also stars Sienna Guillory, Sandrine Holt, Oded Fehr, Mike Epps and Zack Ward.

Jeff Danna, younger brother of fellow composer Mychael Danna, recently proved his diversity by scoring two distinctly different but critically acclaimed movies: one about Jesus and the other about a Hollywood producer. For the epic film, The Gospel of John, Danna painstakingly researched ancient instruments from the time of Jesus to create an authentic score as well as incorporating full orchestra and a choir. For the film, The Kid Stays in the Picture about legendary Paramount producer Robert Evans, Danna researched music of various time periods to create a score that would incorporate the eras of Robert Evans' personal journey. Danna also arranged a version of Irving Berlin's classic "What'll I Do," a song that Evans feels exemplifies his life. His seamless score to the picture incorporates Vaudeville, 1950's gangster music, Waltzes, Tarantellas, Carnival music and contemporary orchestrations to tell the story of Evans' life.

Among his musical milestones was Danna's score to the Miramax Othello update O directed by Tim Blake Nelson and starring Josh Hartnett and Julia Stiles. Danna's score for O garnered him both international notice and critical acclaim. For O, Danna incorporated early musical instruments such as the Hurdy Gurdy, the Vielle and the Viola Da Gamba into a contemporary orchestral setting. Other scoring projects include re-teaming with O director Tim Blake Nelson for the Holocaust piece The Grey Zone, starring David Arquette, Mira Sorvino and Steve Buscemi; Green Dragon, starring Patrick Swayze, Forrest Whitaker and Don Duong and Roger Spottiswoode's The Yeltsin Project.

In addition to his busy scoring schedule, Danna is enjoying a career as a recording artist. His collaborative Orchestral Celtic albums with brother Mychael have enjoyed worldwide success and placed in the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. Jeff Danna has received BMI/numerous OCAN Recognition Award for scoring excellence.

Preview: Call of Duty: Finest Hour

Call of Duty is heading to consoles, courtesy of Spark, and PGC has the extensive preview with info from Activision’s presentation earlier this week.

    Last updated: 09/03/2004

World War II first person shooters have been a staple throughout this generation of consoles, giving players the chance to experience some of the world’s most intense battles of World War II. Developed by Spark (which employs over thirty Medal of Honor series veterans, including the lead producer of MOH, MOH: Underground, and MOH: Frontline), Call of Duty: Finest Hour continues the tradition with squad-based vehicular and on-foot combat with the flavor of popular Hollywood WWII movies.

Spark has done their homework in a number of areas. They’ve gotten their hands on all of the weapons to study for reload and firing animations. They’ve visited many of the museums and battlefields throughout Europe. Plus, extensive interviews were done with historians and veterans who fought in these battles to get a comprehensive understanding of how certain situations would be handled, like under which circumstances you would get out of a tank in battle. Of course, with a concrete foundation, they can still take liberties where it will aid the gameplay experience.

The team is also doing a lot of work to ensure that this is the grandest presentation of battle that they’ve put on the market to date. They’re pushing the consoles hard, putting as many as 200 soldiers on-screen in some scenes. Rather than engaging in the painstaking process of doing the lip-synch animation frame-by-frame, the team sent their character models over to Jim Henson Interactive, where Spark CEO Craig Allen worked as Executive VP prior to starting the company. According to his partner and the game’s producer, Scott J. Langteau, the puppeteer veterans at Henson were able to lay down the animations in a matter of days, when it would have taken months for their in-house animators to do the same. The soundtrack is also rising to new heights, composed by the same person that wrote the score for the upcoming Pixar film, The Incredibles. The score was recorded just this week, performed by an eighty piece orchestra and a fifty person choir.

One of the biggest assets to the series is Finest Hour’s focus on multiple fronts. Gamers will no longer assume the role of one soldier; instead, players will experience the war against the Nazis from multiple campaigns. As the game progresses, the player will become a British PPA Commando raiding Northern Africa, a green Russian recruit thrust into Stalingrad, the commander of the 761st “Black Panther” Tank Battalion, and three other roles. The different characters drive the multi-faceted plot of personal and patriotic achievement.

The gameplay experience will be familiar for those who have played Call of Duty on PC. Finest Hour’s primary goal is to encompass the player in the sights, sounds and action of war. The player must not only comply with formations within a squad of hundreds, but also manage coordinated attacks, stealth operations and sabotage missions where you must protect your fellow computer-controlled soldiers. Victory will require skill with over thirty tools such as snipers, grenades, pistols, machine guns and other authentic German and allied weaponry. The game will also feature improved vehicular combat, allowing gamers to hop in and out of tanks at any time. About one-third of the game takes place in vehicle-heavy stages. Unlike the PS2 and Xbox versions of Finest Hour, which feature online competition, the GameCube game only features offline team and death-match modes in split-screen.

You can storm the Germans from all directions when Activision releases Call of Duty: Finest Hour in late 2004.

    Impressions: X-Men: Legends

Detailed impressions from the nearly complete RPG/brawler.

    Written: 09/03/2004

Earlier this week, Activision invited us to their Southern California offices to show a nearly-finished build of their unique comic book RPG, X-Men Legends. Although it still isn’t all that pretty, the core gameplay definitely won us over.

To get past the bad news, let’s talk graphics first. The art style is drawn from the Ultimate X-Men series, which takes a little time to adjust to if you haven’t kept up with the franchise. In particular, Wolverine’s got a funky new short haircut that I really don’t care for, but you’ll either get used to it or learn to ignore it after a while. During gameplay, X-Men Legends is presented in a cel-shaded style, but unlike notable front runners like Zelda and Tales of Symphonia, X-Men Legends suffers greatly from low polygon counts, blurry textures, and black lines that are simply too thick for their own good. Looking back on the early shots without borders, it seems that adding the lines may have only served to point out the flaws in the models, perhaps even causing them to look simpler than they truly are.

The game does run at a steady thirty frames per second, but without any option for progressive scan in the GameCube and PS2 versions. Finally, it should come as no surprise to GameCube owners that the opening FMV sequence is obviously quite compressed, which is hard to miss with the Xbox version on a nearby screen for comparison. If anything should be made clear though, you’d be a fool to pass up X-Men Legends based on graphics alone, especially if you’re a fan of the characters in any form.

The game has been touted as an RPG, and it does feature standard genre trademarks like a developed storyline, experience levels, and stat-boosting armor and accessories. However, the bulk of the game plays out more like a brawler, complete with combo moves and throws. You take charge of one character and usually have three other characters in tow that can be controlled either by the AI or by another player, and you can switch to any of the open AI characters at any time by pressing a direction on the cross pad. The A button is used for quick attacks. B is for more powerful “smash” attacks. Pressing Y once jumps, and pressing it twice allows some characters to fly, and Y plus B can be used for a jump attack. Pressing A and B in various sequences will allow you to pull off specific combos that serve as leg sweeps or uppercuts or more complex moves. You can also perform throws with the X button, picking up and lobbing one opponent at another, or tossing various items like trash cans at approaching enemies.

By holding the R button, you can view your character’s mutant abilities, which are displayed as a set of icons that correspond to the four face buttons. You can then perform the move by pushing the corresponding button while holding R, which can be done rather quickly once you become more familiar with each character. Each character has unique powers, but from what we saw, powers mapped to A and B are typically offensive; powers mapped to X give stat boosts to your party; and Y is reserved for Extreme moves which appear later in the game. Extreme moves require you to pick up “X” icons dropped by enemies or found inside items along the way, and once you fill up one mark on your meter, you can pull off an Extreme move. The few we saw unleashed powerful attacks against enemies across the screen.

Mutant powers are also called upon outside of battles. Special points mark spots where you’ll need to use a mutant’s special abilities to get by, but what you actually need to do may vary depending on who you have in your current group. The same gap may be crossed a number of different ways. Storm might fly people across. Nightcrawler might use his teleporting skills, or Iceman may just create a frozen bridge.

Plus, in addition to the various melee combos, you can also combine mutant attacks if two of the X-Men use their powers simultaneously. In single player, this is made easier with the L button which calls your allies to your side or prompts them to attack the current enemy. When the AI character begins its move, you can link in your own special move.

You don’t have to play alone, though. Like Crystal Chronicles or Zelda: Four Swords, X-Men Legends is designed with four-player gameplay in mind. Unlike either of those games however, Legends allows players to jump in and play at will simply by walking up and plugging in another controller. The AI will seamlessly hand over a character to that person and will just as seamlessly take control of a mutant if a player pulls out. So there’s no need to restart a level if someone has to leave or if a new player wants to join in. And according to our representative at Activision, this hot-swap feature is only included in the GameCube version.

One of the high points of the game is the highly destructible level design. I mentioned being able to toss trash cans at enemies earlier, but a large number of items throughout the game can be smashed to bits, sometimes revealing healing items, armor, or accessories. There are park benches, barrels, rooftop air-conditioning units, patio chairs, outer layers of some walls – all kinds of items can be smashed to pieces, often to your advantage. At one point, while playing as Gambit, I tossed a guy towards an explosive barrel, and quickly threw a hand of mutant-flavored playing cards at it just in time for it to explode as he was getting up. Not to mention that sometimes it’s fun to just randomly pick up desk lamps and smash them against the wall.

By this point you’re probably wondering how the term RPG fits into all this. Well, as you might expect, defeating enemies gives you experience, and gaining enough experience points will allow you to level up. When you go to the character details screen, there are three pages: one for stats, one for powers, and one for equipment. The equipment page is simply for armor and accessories that you find or buy along the way. When you level up, you’ll usually get an automatic increase in some of your stats, but you’ll also have a certain number of points that can be assigned to whichever attributes you please. It’s similar to the system in Knights of the Old Republic. You also have a separate set of points to be assigned to your mutant powers, which include increasing the attack power of current moves, additional stat bonuses, new mutant powers, and special abilities like flying. However, some of the choices may require you to reach a particular experience level before you can apply points to them.

X-Men fans have plenty to look forward to. Legends features fifteen playable mutants, including Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Jean Grey, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Beast, and Storm, and several others. The story was written by Men of Action, a group that features several former Marvel writers. It begins with a girl named Alison who Wolverine rescues from being kidnapped by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in New York. She is then brought back to Xavier’s school, where she picks up the name Magma and must decide whether she wants to become an X-Man or not.

The game features a number of bonuses for fans to find along the way, which can be reviewed in Xavier’s mansion between missions. There are cinematic clips, comic book covers, various artwork from the load screens, concept art, enemy profiles, and even an X-Men trivia game that dispenses experience points for correct answers. You can also find training discs for use in the Danger Room that teach all the combat basics as well as advanced combos.

One of the best features for fans is the set of “flashback” scenarios. As you walk through the dormitories and get to know the more experienced mutants, they’ll begin to share their stories, many of which are pulled straight from classic X-Men comics. You don’t just sit back and listen though -- you actually play out the scenario. Activision showed us one of Beast’s flashbacks from a time when Juggernaut broke into the mansion in an attempt to kidnap Professor Xavier. Not only are Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, and Beast in your party, but they’re wearing their original old-school uniforms from when the comics first started. This scene is also a superb display of X-Men Legends’ destructible environments, as Juggernaut literally starts running through the walls, ripping the place apart and giving you a panicked realization of the sheer strength of your opponent.

Even if it’s a bit rough around the edges, X-Men Legends looks to have plenty to offer with lots of goodies for the fans, over twenty levels, a fun battle system that expands as you gain experience, and easy hot-swap multiplayer. X-Men Legends comes out on the 24th of September, but if you pre-order, be sure to look for the limited-edition comic books and trading cards that Activision is offering as incentives.

Seeking for more female representation within development ranks, Southern Methodist University and WomenGamers.com have set up an industry-funded Scholarship.

WomenGamers.com and Southern Methodist University Present Women's Scholarship,

Details to be Unveiled at Women's Game Conference in Austin

Thursday, August 26, 2004---Research Triangle Park, NC--- WomenGamers.com has teamed with The Guildhall at SMU (Southern Methodist University) to present the first-ever women's-only, industry-funded scholarship to attend SMU's one-of-a-kind digital games education program in Dallas, Texas.  An official press conference is planned for the Women's Game Conference, September 9-10 in Austin, Texas.

Named the Game Development Scholarship for Women, the fund will help female students cover tuition expenses incurred during the 18-month Guildhall program, which costs $37,000.  Applicants who meet The Guildhall at SMU's entrance requirements will be eligible to compete for the scholarship beginning in the fall.  The scholarship awards will be funded by game industry businesses that recognize the need for adding more women to the game developer workforce.

The scholarship has been developed as an effort to achieve more female representation in the game development industry.  A recent study by the Entertainment Software Association found that about 39% of gamers are women, and according to WomenGamers.com, this growing diversity among players calls for more women to be working in the game development industry.

"We feel strongly that more women should be working in the industry, but unfortunately it's not a simple problem to solve," says Phaedra Boinodiris of WomenGamers.com. "We established this scholarship to encourage women who wanted an opportunity to enter this challenging field of study."

The Guildhall at SMU Executive Director, Peter Raad, PhD, states, "Game development studios and publishers must learn to capitalize more effectively on the increasing numbers of women playing games.  We believe the most important step toward achieving that goal is for game developers' staffing choices to be reflective of the growing market of female gamers."

Mary-Margaret.com, a top professional recruitment service for the interactive entertainment industry, is currently working with WomenGamers.com and The Guildhall at SMU to help identify publishers and game development studios who may be interested in donating to the scholarship fund.   Mary-Margaret.com is a sponsor of the Women's Game Conference and an official supporter of The Guildhall at SMU's Game Development Scholarship for Women.

The same month it's releasing stateside - imagine that.

King Arthur to reign in November

Konami of Europe confirms November launch for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Game Cube interpretation of blockbuster movie

Konami of Europe has announced that it is to release the video game adaptation of one of the summer's biggest movies - King Arthur - for PlayStation®2, the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft and Nintendo GameCubeTM in November.

Licensed by Buena Vista Games, Inc and developed by Krome Studios PTY, Ltd., the King Arthur video game will utilise footage from the Touchstone Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films movie and feature likenesses of characters from the film. The King Arthur video game will immerse fans into the lush environments and vivid scenery from the film.

Players take control of the motion picture's heroes - Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere, Tristan or Bors - and use their unique skills as they embark on a perilous mission revealing the historic tale of the real Knights of the Round Table. Featuring single or co-operative play, combat on horseback, and multiple mission types with diverse goals, the King Arthur video game will provide a cinematic action adventure experience of epic scale.

"The King Arthur movie is perfect fodder for an all-action game for the leading systems," said Martin Schneider, European Marketing & PR Director, Konami of Europe. "With the game using footage and likenesses lifted directly from the film, we have created a very playable game that dove-tails perfectly into the movie's action sequences, effectively allowing the player to relive its many epic battles first-hand."

"The King Arthur video game is inspired by the epic true story that gave rise to the King Arthur legend," said Graham Hopper, senior vice president and general manager of Buena Vista Games. "By working with the talented team at Krome and Konami, the real story of King Arthur will be played out with intense battles, innovative combat and realistic environments."

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Top Gun), directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), and written by David Franzoni, the King Arthur film hit cinemas across Europe in August. Bolstered by stars including Clive Owen (Gosford Park, Beyond Borders), Keira Knightley (Bend It Like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast, Cold Mountain), the film portrays the true story behind the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

These monsters must then be delegated orders to counter attacks from the CPU-controlled assailants, and to go on the offensive. The ultimate aim of the game is to secure key areas of the game map, thus helping Yugi and co seize control of the virtual world and facilitate their escape.

With a wealth of stunning moves, attacks and visually resplendent combination attacks, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom marks a superb debut on the Nintendo format for the popular franchise. With its engrossing three-on-three battles, twisting plot and plentiful attacking and defensive options, The Falsebound Kingdom is a worthy addition to Konami of Europe's expanding range of Yu-Gi-Oh! titles.
