I'm going to look at it from a consumer's perspective.

Amazon USA simply does not want your money. The contracted relationship for supply of goods rests with Amazon and not Nintendo. If they do not want to supply it then, they lose out. I go elsewhere. Plenty other places on the internets.

The point for me is moot as Amazon UK is selling it, however. Premium is £300.

That's bizarre. I'm going to wait until something else on the RFN feed is published in the hope that the "part 306" thing fixes itself. If it doesn't i'm buying Instacast.

I just went to Music on my iPod Touch, clicked on More, then I see Podcasts.

What gen iPod Touch do you have? Mine is identical on my third gen (which will not get iOS 6).

My 4S has this:

That's strange. I now see them (with chapters!) in "Audiobooks".

What was that podcast app that Jonny recommended on RFN? Was it Instacast?

iOS's handling of podcasts has been shoddy since v4 with the chapter bug.

4 - Cannot see chapter titles.
5 - Fixes it.
5.1 - Cannot see chapter titles again.
6 - Ejects podcasts out of the default music app entirely. Download the default apple podcast app and it doesn't show chapter titles (or have any indication that it's a bug, implying this is intentional!).

Why is it so difficult to get right?

I remember seeing Mario Kart 64 for £50-60 back in the day, while disc games were £40.

Despite that i've not paid over £35 for a game in about 7 years.

Move to Atlantis. Nobody will bother you there.

I think the UK prices are insane. There is no way this should be available for pre-order for £300+.

The upper price range for Premium is £290-330. That's insane.

Definitely not buying at that price.

Amazon has their own Appstore, they don't officially support the Google Play Store. So how does a Kindle Fire give you the same experience as a traditional Android tablet?

It doesn't "officially" support it. but Google Play can still work. It can be sideloaded, and all the content from there can be installed as normal. In no way is it blocked, except from being made invisible.

Otherwise the experiences is the same (barring Amazon's customisations, of course).

« on: September 13, 2012, 04:08:41 AM »
1 GB RAM for the OS and related Apps is crazy big for a console. I know they are moving more and more towards being media boxes, but that's a bit much. Hopefully it's more of a soft cap and memory usage is more flexible than the article indicates.

I guess they want to have as much as possible going in.

It's cheaper and they retain compatibility with the rest of the Android infrastructure.

I have a iPhone 4S, and a third gen iPod Touch.

My iPod Touch is locked out of iOS 6. Nice. Thanks apple.

The only thing that excited me through that announcement was that (and this is relevant to almost nobody here!) it's compatible with LTE frequencies here. And as EE (the UK's first LTE network) started its launch process this week, it's pretty much a lock that we are getting a LTE iPhone.

I'd like to hear any Apple acolytes on the site defend Apple's absolutely horrendous earbuds. Say what you want about expensive hardware and battery life issues, but I'm of the position that those earbuds are indefensible.

I maintain my stance on this. It's too early to say about the earbud, but for anything pre-yesterday's announcement if you buy an iDevice and are still using the original apple headphones you deserve to have your iDevice confiscated from you. There is no reason on earth why you can spend several hundred dollars/pounds and THEN use those cheap shitty leaky headphones provided.

The amazon series of tablets are forked versions of Android. There is deeper below-the-scenes changes in the OS itself which they made to make it more suitable to themselves. The aim really is similar to Apple in that they want their own "walled garden".

I might just get a Nexus 7, but I heard it has some hardware defects (screen popping out, buzzing speakers). Have those problems been fixed in the new models?[/size]

All launch products tend to have defects that get ironed out a few months after launch. Nintendo included. I think it's fair to say we're past the "launch period" now for the 7 so things should be settling down now.

Speaking of tablets... would any of you choose a Kindle Fire HD over a Google Nexus 7 or Samsung Galaxy Tab? What are the advantages of the Kindle Fire?

If you want a customisable experience get a Nexus 7 (it's easy to do, like the Nexus phones).
If you want a "manufacturer provided" experience get a Galaxy Tab.
If you want something for consumption (like online stores for games, movies, etc), get the Kindle Fire.

I'm getting a Nexus 7 next week (although i am seriously considering requesting we hold off so i can get a 3G + Wifi one instead), and i binged up on Humble Indie Bundles so i have a ton of games to play on there.

Will report how that turns out soon.

I did install World of Goo on my Galaxy Nexus though. I admit i find that game easier with touch control than with my Wii Remote or keyboard/mouse.

They make anti-3D glasses too, don't they?

I never knew they existed. It's extremely stupid though. I have to pay more to see it, only to pay again for glasses to cancel out the 3D effect.

Well, the movie's name IS Dredd 3D for a reason. I don't mind, I prefer watching them in 3D (although I don't like paying an extra $2.50 for it).

All 3D films give me headaches. It's not worth the money for a headache.

TalkBack / Re: Predictions for Sept. 13 Wii U Event
« on: September 10, 2012, 06:43:27 AM »
As with every system launch in the UK, the prices for the Wii U will be all over the place. I expect retailer-specific bundles with random assortments of accessories, and I also anticipate sudden reductions from certain places (most likely supermarkets) at the last minute to undercut the GAMEs, HMVs and Blockbusters. If I had to lay my finger on an RRP though, I'll go with £219.99, which is £40 more than what the Wii launched for.

Since when did Blockbuster do console launches? They're just a movie rental store, and I thought they were going bankrupt?

I have no idea about their financial situation, but at least over here, they sell both DVDs and games (including hardware), and not just for rental. I was in my local Blockbusters not that long ago and there were advertising for Wii U pre-orders.

Also, the figure I gave - £219.99 - is pretty optimistic. I'm well aware that they might have the gumption for go higher, but in light of where the PS3 and 360 are priced, as well as the market realities the 3DS encountered early in it's life cycle, I'm hoping for something quite reasonable like that.

I would lean towards £229.99 personally. Something about 230 seems to flow better.
