General Gaming / Re: What is your most recent gaming purchase?
« on: October 23, 2012, 08:33:22 AM »
My most recent gaming purchase is a new 500GB Super Slim PS3 (for £200!).

My last, phat 80GB, one got a red screen of death and (because the hard drive is encrypted) took all my game saves with it.

I hope this year we get the Greg Soliloquy hour.

An hour of Greg reciting Shakespeare like Patrick Stewart.

Provide bluetooth in the system (in addition to the USB ports) so we can use wired or wireless headsets. Then enable a variety of voice platforms like skype and google talk to handle voice chat.

It is handing off the problem entirely to another network, but we at least know skype works how it should do.

I really wouldn't want that to every manufacturer. A HTC, Samsung and (unlikely, but...) Nokia Nexus are the only three i'd be interested in.

A tablet is less functional than an laptop/netbook. Therefore it should be priced lower. I don't see the point in pricing these things to £500.. when my £250 laptop does exactly the same.

Given that iPads and iPhones are near-enough the same price (when they are functionally the same minus voice and screen size) confuses things further.

I paid £200 for my Nexus 7 and i'm very happy with that.

Given i've had three Android devices that all have NFC in them (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7; see a pattern?) and the most ive ever done with them is accidentally make my oystercard or contactless credit card talk to them only to get "unknown tag".

NFC is very much a solution in search of a problem and i've yet to see a need to put them in portable devices. The only place that almost makes sense to have them is in payment cards, which "should" make payments faster.
I suspect this will be the "that thing" that has no real-world purpose for even being on a Nintendo device, like the clicky gamecube triggers and the strange hook attachment on the classic controller.

As long as there is at least some thought and some foreplanning involved, i'm fine. Ideally -- you're fixed in number of seasons and know exactly what you're doing in each of them and how you want your character to be like.

If a show has a fixed number of seasons and fixed number of episodes in them (and knowing that from the show's launch!) nearly every show would simply be awesome. Think Torchwood: Children of Earth and Sherlock's 3 episode season.

Doctor Who spoiler fixed events can be sidestepped as its already proven in "The Wedding of River Song", and River has a vortex manipulator which can go back in time much easier compared to the TARDIS. The only thing that would need to happen is that, as its a fixed event, they would need to return Amy/Rory back to that same timeframe so they can continue their lives (and hence die) there.

I saw Looper on Saturday with my ex, we both love it. I think Joe made a mistake at the end, and I don't like it because they did not make it clear that the psycho kid will not still become the Rain Maker since he is already a little demon kid Both in our theatre and the theatre that some friends went to, everyone was silent at the end because the movie just suddenly ends with no indication it was over or a resolution to it. Is that the debate you are referring to Plug? And a friend brought up a point, why wouldn't they kill the people in the future, then send them back rather than having the loopers do the killing?

The loopers did the killing as it ultimately circled them out and removes all proof: no body, no murder weapon in the future and no killer (as he ultimately will shoot his future self) therefore nobody can be tied to it.

The most obvious is that both the Rain Maker and Old Joe are predetermined events, so in a possible future the rainmaker exists, but not "our" present in which young joe kills the old one. By old joe going back in time it's all changed. The movie doesnt settle on whether its a single universe or several, and bounces back and forth to make the plot work.

For instance, when old seth appears he should have appeared mutilated already as that had already happened to him in the future (if it was a single timeline), but only does when it happens in the present (suggesting multi) and so on.

This entire thread would not even occur if region locking was not an issue.

Sadly, it is, because Nintendo includes currency fluctuations into their sums more than any other console. Lets be honest, money (and how much can be extracted per unit in that region) is the only reason both Wii/U and 3DS are region locked.

Looper - A time travelling mess of brilliance. The debate after watching this film is probably worth the film alone.

The plan is for DT to liquidate their stake over time, drawing it from 75% to 0 slowly.

I know thats the option they have, but when the Everything Everywhere happened in 2010 it meant the combined company jumped from 3rd and 4th (behind O2 and Vodafone UK) to the largest single operator.

This isn't exactly the same but it does solidify their position.

If the new company is 70+% owned by Deutsche Telecom then how are they making a "graceful exit" from the USA?

Everything Everywhere (the owners of EE, T-Mobile UK and Orange UK) is 50% owned by both Deustche and France Telecom, and neither has reduced holdings since the merger.

Did I not respond to you and say that Nintendo of America told us (and also IGN) that there was one incoming?

Did I also not say that, according to NoA, it was coming "soon" and/or "shortly"? This no fault of any journalist; this is Nintendo of America telling us something and then not delivering.

Listening to other people is overrated.

LOL at the thought Abrams could even be mentioned in the same breath as Spielberg. Abrams sometimes gets lucky.

This and this. He's a good producer - his studio has a lot of talent within it (look at Fringe!) - But overall he has been very hit and miss.
The only TV shows to be successful from his stable is Lost (massive megahit, wrecked TV in the years that followed), Person of Interest (has higher ratings than Lost by averages, but its "procedural looking" so nobody cares!), and Fringe (the show that just will not die despite being in the friday death slot for 3 years).

Fringe - Nothing makes TV seem completely normal like seeing Walter walking around outside with no pants/trousersd.

Person of Interest - This is a basically a 21st century take on Batman, where several people all play "parts of" Batman. The first half of season 1 starts off very dull and simple, then it started to lay the groundwork. By the end of S1 it was actually firing off at all cylinders and all the main points began to come into play.

Nintendo is showing off the Wii U at the eurogamer expo at Earl's Court (London) RIGHT NOW.

You'd think Nintendo Europe would have sent a press release out somewhere?

Fringe S1E1. Not bad, not mindblowing, but I could see it getting cool.

The first half of S1 is bone average. From there it just launches into amazing. Keep going.

HP bought Palm, who in turn made webOS. /pedant

The LA Complex - This show has received the lowest ratings for any major network show, yet its also pretty damned good. It ended its second season perfectly. If it doesn't come back it bowed out just right. Not many shows handle the ending very well.

Nintendo continuing the trend of the last 3 generations and making profit on hardware. Surprised, much?
