And another item, the controllers were using the speaker, at least in boxing. Thats the only game that you had to put the controller close enough to your head to hear above everything else.

Oh yeah, I was there representing with my Planetgamecube shirt. Maybe some visitors will come around because of it.

Yes, you can block, just by putting your hands up in front of your face. Then you can dodge by blocking and then move to one side or the other. The gloves follow your movements pretty much 1:1. There is an invisible tether that keeps them from moving past a certain distance (think Rayman, no limbs). A couple of times our arms would get tangled, making for some weird punching/dancing.

Well, I don't know if the show is worth skipping class, unless you really like the bands.

I was underwelmed, frankly. Though the games I really want to play were not there. The sports package was there, Excite Truck was there, Wario Ware, and Metroid. Metroid's line was soooo long, and the Wii that it was being played on was defective or something. It was shut down for an hour or so.

First off, the games all look teriffic. Sharp and clean. Even the sports package, while lacking details, looked very nice and I have nothing to complain about. Anyone who does really needs to examine why they are playing games. At first I was disappointed by the lack of HD, and sent Nintendo a letter regarding it. I'm satisfied though.

Playing the games is like playing Mario64 for the first time. I kept pushing the control stick to the edge, unable to make Mario walk and keep in control at the same time. Excite Truck really takes a fine hand to steer with accuracy. And standing up in front of a crowd is not the place to learn. But it was still fun.

Boxing takes getting used to, also. It mimics your hands pretty well, but it takes timing. You can move faster than the animation, so you can't do lightning quick punches one after the other. And if you spend the whole time punching your character grows tired. If you hold both controllers up and push forward quickly, a slo-mo mode is activated, though I couldn't get a grip of it.

Wario Ware was the most interesting and the most finely tuned. Even the driving mini-game was easier  than Excite Truck (though the speed was not as great...). But it really was the pick up and play game that shows off the controller. Not much of a line for it (imagine that!).

I did not play tennis, bowling, baseball, or Metroid. The lines were not fun looking. Only Excite Truck had more than one kiosk.

So the showcases were not present. No Zelda, no Mario, no Red Steel, no Rayman. I walked away feeling 'meh'.

Now I'm thinking that since I have a 360, maybe I could wait a year for the Wii. Wait for a black color to be released, wait for the console to drop $50. Maybe if I fell in love with Zelda or Red Steel or Rayman I wouldn't wait. It was a hands on experience, but really the people who got the most out of the show were the fans of the bands.

Oh, I did play some DS games. Final Fantasy III is a great game. The touch n go control scheme makes for an easy time. Mario vs DK2 is also a fantastic game. Additictive gameplay. Other games I didn't play: Mario Hoops, Star Wars Legos, Tony Hawk, and Mega Man Z (looks awesome).

The Cleveland show is tomorrow night. Hopefully I'll be able to attend. Anyone else going?

I'll report back here with impressions. I'm dying to play me some Wii.

Nintendo Gaming / Gamestop Christmas Meeting Update
« on: September 29, 2006, 09:32:06 AM »
So my buddy who is a manager for Gamestop gave me some impressions of the Wii.

Overall, its awesome.

Zelda is going to be game of the year, hands down.
Mario is up there but with one small level to play is hard to fully judge.
Metroid is made easier but more of the same.
Red Steel is difficult because you need to hold both controllers up at the same time through out most of the game. I guess you need to have them up to have your weapon drawn (he didn't elaborate)

He didn't mention other games by name, but they played on 50 inch plasma screens, 100 systems were setup, everything was sweet as pie. I'm very jealous. Plus, he won an internal contest and won one of the first Wii's off the production line (10 winners). Then one of them get to win a plasma tv.

Tonight is Xbox, tomorrow is Sony. He's looking forward to God of War 2 and Gears of War.

Nintendo Gaming / Gearbox Software Interview quotes
« on: September 13, 2006, 06:14:38 PM »
The latest issue of EGM has an interview with Randy Pitchford of Gearbox, and has some nice things to say about the Wii:

"I think the Wii is awesome! It is just that what makes it awesome isn't about computing power-it's about interface, accessibility, usability, and how we think about playing games and interacting with them."

"...we can be a bit wasteful on the Wii and be really competitive with other Wii titles." (Speaking on the difficulty of programming and available resources)

There's more but I'm not going to type any more. Some else can, though

Sounds like we'll be getting our share of squad based FPS games. Yay!

I think its pretty telling when most people here are in agreement to which games are good for the 360. I'll give Dead Rising a rental in order to do more than the demo. It really starts off weird with the blonde chick who has balloons in her shirt. Then I find 3 fellas who could be from Deliverance looking to pop the dude in the head. Its like the game is Evil Dead done right.?

I DL'd the demo for PGR3 but haven't tried it out yet. I prefer acardey racers like Burnout though. I despise the GT series on PS.

I've played through more of PD0. I'm enjoying myself.

Alot of people are mentioning Uno around the various game forums. I'll see about getting that one too.

I've never heard of Cloning Clyde . . .

And Call of Duty 2 is the one game I wanted when the system launched. But its still $60 and I'm not sure I want to swallow that. Yes, I'll have to eat it when Gears of War comes out, but that will definately be worth it. (I will probably get CoD3 on the Wii depending on how well received it is.)

I've downloaded a number of demos. Lost Planet is pretty niffty. Condemned reminded me of Resident Evil. Not the story but the story telling mechanics. Very atmospheric, but just like I've never finished a RE game, if I ever got Condemned, I doubt I would finish it.

Dead Rising was fun but repetitive. Some people praise its zombie bashing gameplay but I grew tired of it. Maybe I just need to give it a more in-depth run through.

DOA was fun too, but also repetitive. Tis the nature of fighting games. At least IMHO.

I have the Burnout games for the original. I am very happy with them. Just sucks my previous saves can't be converted over.

I don't know what to do about my Chronicles of Riddick though. Its not backwards compatible, but I have not the room to keep both Xboxes. Shall I pray that Microsoft finally gets this working? You'd think they could since Doom3 and Halo2 are working (other games that use normal mapping). Perhaps CoR is just to dependent on the inner workings of the Xbox?

And while I don't expect my 360 to last forever, at least MS has been good about helping people out with their broken ones. I will keep it well ventilated and free of carpet fibers.

If anyone wants to play some games, just let me know. I'm playing PD0 and GRAW. Or if you have suggestions as to the next purchase, post it. Though I think I'm waiting for Gears of War (and the Wii, of course).

TalkBack / RE:Ubisoft Announces Seven Wii Launch Titles
« on: September 05, 2006, 07:39:05 PM »
Far Cry Wii is now Far Cry Vengence (as noted above).

They are happy with the graphics as the series is known as a graphic dependent one. The developer feels that second gen games will push the Wii further, but FC:V is pushing it quite a bit.

The controller is working perfectly. Testers report they are surprised by the things that can be done. One example is zooming, just push the controller forward.

The game has a tweaked storyline from another game, though maps are new. (I don't remember the game, possibly Instincts). But the crew wants to attract old and new fans of the series so it needs to be new content.

Solid 30 fps, 480p and widescreen support.

Split screen multi, looking into sending new content via WiiConnect24, online multiplayer in the future?

I think this will be the first Far Cry game I will buy.

Holy moly. I almost never read anybody's profile. Props to VG for not lashing out at lame comments, though one can't last long on the Internet without a thick skin. (though I don't believe the comments were horrible, maybe just a tad inappropriate)

I salute you, Steve Irwin.

They aren't third party games, but I watched the IGN weekly video thing hosted by Fran and he's demonstrating various games from The German Games Con. In both BWii and Strikers he's playing against other players who are using seperate systems at the show. I know it doesn't prove WiFi for the games, but if its got LAN, its a short leap to WiFi, right?

I just wanted to chime in with my support of 1st person/3rd person view switching and the inclusion of multiple wall jumps. I can picture an urban landscape of chasing people down and making a chase up to the roof tops by jumping up in an alley. It adds a sense of 'Should I follow or not?' as the first person could lay a trap (say an oil spill??) or the second person could decide to pick the other one off as he's jumping back and forth.

I would love to see this thread evolve into a game. Somebody who matters should be reading.

MTV has the scoop

I wasn't too sure of the game before, but its shaping up to be something to look into. It at least gives some insight into what developers go through to develop for the Wii.

Man, I f-n hated playing through Turok Evo. I finally just put in a cheat to walk through the game to the finish. Every time you die, you have to wait and wait and wait. . . I felt kinda betrayed by the game. I supported the series through its N64 life and this pile of stink is what I get in return. Now we don't even get to see the next one on Wii.

Thanks for the memories. Now let the door hit you on your way out.

Those images are pretty convincing. Think about this: If you had a stack of papers and shoved them in a trash container, wouldn't they all fold in similar spots? I altered the levels in Photoshop to see the wrinkles and they do vary in size and placement, though close enough to be part of the same stack. So I do think the originator did scan in wrinkled papers.

I did a 'www.anywho.com' reverse lookup on the number posted on the first page. It comes up as Nintendo.

Too bad those things are easily faked. The problem with the images arose when the levels were adjusted. The pixel information is different than the paper. Plus, the words do not follow the folds in the paper.

I support the conclusion that the images from Reggie's desk is fake.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:No Online for COD3 Wii
« on: August 24, 2006, 08:33:29 PM »
The new Nintendo Power mag shows some new screen shots of CoD3. I can say that I truly hope that the recent rumors of the game being delayed until next year are true. The screen shots are worse than Gamecube. Horrible textures, endless aliasing issues, poor to no lighting effects.

No mention of multi-player, but there is this bit of info:

Quote

Say you find yourself in close-quarters with an enemy soldier; you can grab onto his rifle and shake the controller to wrench the weapon from his grasp.

Quote

You'll also use the controller to steer the various vehicles in the game, including jeeps and the aforementioned tanks.

I came away from the article disappointed, though if improvements in all areas can be brought about before release then I'll be happy and probably buy it.

General Chat / RE:The SciFi channel hates good shows.

They say Atlantis is higher rated than SG-1. Personally, I think it was a mistake to remove the go'uld as the main enemy and bring in the priors. I'm really just bored with the story line. That and having Richard Dean Anderson leave for behind the scene stuff. His personality really meant alot for the show. The 100th show was just that much more entertaining due to his presence. Ditto for the Atlantis episode that followed.

CNN also reported that the producing company is shopping the series around to other networks as they feel there is still life in it. 'Course, that may be because after 10 years the action figures are hoping off the assembly line. There are other rumors of another Stargate spinoff. And I'm waiting with baited breath for another Stargate movie.

I haven't seen anything on the net so hopefully its wrong, but I heard that Nintendo was set to distribute FFIII and now Square wants to distribute iit themselves so the release has been postponed until the contract period has passed.

I checked out a couple of retailers, Amazon has an early October release while Gamestop has early November. Wasn't the original date in September? Is it possible that the release date will continue to be passed back until the contract period is met?

I like that Rapture song. I was kinda looking forward to a Blondie remake, but its still a good head banger. Sounds a bit 'Tool'ish.

Music videos aren't supposed to make sense, they're just eye candy. Look at Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love.

The EGM article that broke the story said that the game will be a Wii launch title. The only details that were lacking are multiplayer. Hopefully we'll get those details soon.
