Donkey Kong! Again!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35192

This might be a light week, but I'm still playing catch up on the recent two-hit combo of Pikmin 3 and Mario & Luigi: Dream team, so I certainly don't mind.

To make up for the lack of new titles we're being treated to some decent discounts on some of the better Wii U eShop titles, so be sure to scoop those up if you're trying to fill your time between now and the explosions of games coming to Nintendo platforms in October.

3DS Retail Games

Barbie: Glam and Groom Pups - $29.99

Wii U Retail Games

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist - $59.99

Wii U eShop Sales

BIT.TRIP Presents…Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien - $11.25 until 9 a.m. PT on Aug. 29

Trine 2 - $7.99 until 9 a.m. PT on Sept. 5.

3DS eShop Games

My Western Horse 3D - $29.99

Saddle up, chumps! It's time to tear into some riding adventures with Karla, so she can achieve her dream of being a big time horse riding star. With customizable horses and three different tournaments, you'll be riding until the cows come home.

Heavy Fire: Black Arms 3D - $4.99

Battle it out in the South American jungle! For a measly five bucks you can spend your afternoon shooting bad guys, destroying aircraft and rising through the ranks. Come on, who hasn't fantasized about going buck wild with a machine gun in a South American jungle filled with marines?

10-in-1: Arcade Collection - $2.99

Ten games for three bucks? Yes, please! Besides, game collections are always a great idea, right? Let's see what we have here. I see Tetris a clone, a Space Invaders clone, and an Asteroids clone, so all your bases should be covered. If you're looking for bang for your buck then, according to math, you should pick this game up.

3DS Virtual Console

Donkey Kong - $4.99

If you missed the chance to get this for .30 cents on the Wii U Virtual Console, then fear not! Nintendo is graciously allowing you to purchase it for five dollars on your 3DS! Go back to DK's roots and experience a burning hatred for all things Italian all over again.

Wii U Virtual Console

Galaga - $4.99

Anyone who grew up after they heyday of the American arcade has probably seen a Pac-Man/Galaga split machine. In the interest of saving space in a declining arcade market those bad boys were crammed into every movie theater and pizza place they could find. Why? Because Galaga is awesome, that's why. Don't forget the Dual Fighter trick!

Good luck importing this one!

Nintendo's Taiwan branch is releasing five Doraemon-themed 3DS systems, to be distributed via a contest.

Purchasing a copy of Doraemon: Nobita’s Number Adventure, a math game being localized and published by Nintendo of Taiwan, gives you a chance to win.

With only five being produced, this will be the rarest 3DS system so far.

TalkBack / Iwata: Price Isn't Why the Wii U Isn't Selling
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:30:27 AM »

Oh, Iwata...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35160

Price isn't the reason for poor Wii U sales, according to Iwata in a recent interview.

While speaking to Computer and Video Games Iwata went on to say that if "price is actually the an issue with [the Wii U], then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the Basic and Premium versions."

He also stated that he "[understands] that the real issue is the lack of software, and the only solution is to provide the mass-market with a number of quality software titles."

This is after the company reported selling only 160,000 units worldwide between April and July of this year and some retailers sought to lower the prices themselves.

900k? That's absurd. Guess you'll have to go StreetPass the entirety of Japan!

TalkBack / Warrior's Way Review Mini
« on: August 10, 2013, 09:00:56 PM »

Not too bad...When you actually get to play it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewmini/35158

The four new StreetPass games really are a mixed bag. When I picked them up, I was originally worried about the anemic number of fellow 3DS owners in my area, but the games are largely compatible with a small number of StreetPass partners combined with liberal Play Coin usage. Warrior’s Way is, unfortunately, the exception.

In Warrior’s Way, your army grows each time you StreetPass a partner, but only by the number of StreetPasses that partner has passed themselves. So, in an area such as mine where StreetPasses are rare, it’s even more rare to find someone who has a large army to add to your own. This means that you’ll be relying heavily on purchasing mercenaries, which range from five to a whopping 15 Play Coins.

To the game’s credit, the rock-paper-scissors combat can be really fun, and as you progress through the game you meet different enemy types that have different combat abilities. These varied combatants make invading countries and beating down other warlords a lot of fun, but the enjoyment is short-lived. After gathering up your army, you’re only able to invade one other country before having to either StreetPass more people or hire more mercenaries.

In the end, there isn’t much to Warrior’s Way. It’s a fun combat experience soured by the fact that it’s buried under a Play Coin pay wall, and the last final battle requires a truly absurd number of soldiers to complete the game -- over 80,000 -- where most previous battles required 10,000 at most. It’s the easiest to hop in and out of among the four new games, but it quickly runs out of steam. Warrior’s Way should have taken a note from Mii Force’s book and relied less heavily on Play Coins, but as it stands it’s an interesting, entertaining gameplay idea buried under frustrating execution. Unless you live in a very StreetPass heavy area or have a heaping pile of Play Coins to burn, the game will only provide a minute or so of gameplay at a time.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 97: Just Shut Up
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:36:54 PM »

This week, the crew explores Pikmin 3 and Mario & Luigi Dream Team, discusses Tropes Vs. Women, recaps the week's news and releases, and interviews the studio behind SteamWorld Dig!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/35156

We have a heck of a show for you this week, and unlike plenty of upcoming games, it's available right now, no matter where you live!

Kicking things off, Neal, Scott and Justin discuss to the two major Nintendo releases of the past week: Pikmin 3 and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. While the trio has mostly nothing but adoration for the pluckable plants, Dream Team doesn't fare quite so well. If you're on the fence about either, this segment should help you make up your mind!

After that, Carmine joins Dave, Julia, and Josh to break down the latest videos in the Tropes Vs. Women series. Despite some controversy and vitriol from both supporters and detractors of the series, the group takes an evenhanded approach in discussing the overall themes and their implications for gaming as a whole.

Next up, Scott and Neal host a new, recurring segment called "This Week in Nintendo," which is focused on covering the latest eShop and Virtual Console releases as well as discussing any important news from that week. In the first installment, the duo go over a rather pedestrian Nintendo Direct before discussing this week's digital releases, including Spin the Bottle and SteamWorld Dig.

Speaking of SteamWorld Dig, the final segment for episode 97 features Daan's interview with Image & Form CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson, the studio behind the surprisingly great new title. Brjann discusses the game as well as the future of the SteamWorld universe.

As always, you can click here to send us your listener mail. We've gotten a handful of good e-mails this week, and will probably start reading them on air next week. So if you have a good question or topic you're sitting on, send it our way! See you next week.

TalkBack / Pokémon X and Y Will Introduce Mega Evolutions
« on: August 08, 2013, 02:56:58 PM »

MegaPikachu, use MegaThunderbolt!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35148

Pokémon X and Y will support a new type of evolution called Mega Evolution, as shown in a recent issue of CoroCoro.

While the details of performing a Mega Evolution have not been fully disclosed yet, a few new forms have been shown including: MegaBlaziken, MegaMewtwo, MegaAbsol, MegaMawile and MegaLucario.

Mega Evolution gives the Pokémon new abilities (such as giving MegaMewtwo Insomnia), and alters their physical appearance.

We're still waiting on a full translation of CoroCoro for all the details, but it appears the new version of Mewtwo that we've seen in the past is, in fact, MegaMewtwo.

Plumbers, ducks and warlords.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35142

Mario & Luigi are once again making their way to a handheld near you, but Wii U owners, do not despair! DuckTales: Remastered will be available just two short days later!

Unfortunately no 3DS Virtual Console love this week, but the Wii U gets, what I consider, one of the best feudal Chinese warlord simulators ever to release on the Super Nintendo.

3DS eShop Sales

escapeVektor - $4.99 until 9am PT August 22

3DS Retail Games

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - $39.99, Available August 11

3DS eShop Games

Smash Bowling 3D - $4.99

It's bowling! No zombies, no gimmicks, no explosions, just pure bowling action. The game boasts a four player multiplayer mode using a single system, so you can experience all the waiting and sitting of a real bowling alley! The Dude would be proud.

SteamWorld Dig - $8.99

I know, you're probably sick of mining games by now, but listen: SteamWorld Dig is different. You'll dig your way deep underground to defeat a race of ugly-as-sin troglodytes to uncover treasure as well as the remnants human civilization. See? Told you it was different. Besides, the main character wears a cowboy hat, which we all know makes the game awesome by default.

Tangran Style - $6.99

Just a refresher: tangrams are the little flat, multicolored, multi-shaped blocks that we all played with as kids, but didn't know what they were for. Solve puzzles, make shapes and feel good about yourself in Tangram Style's 600 tangram puzzles.

Wii U eShop Games

DuckTales: Remastered - $14.99, Available August 13

Man, ducks sure have a hard life! Race cars, lasers, airplanes; they've got a lot to deal with! Fortunately for us, Scrooge McDuck is up to the task and back to his old tricks!  Live the American dream as a duck on a pogo stick hoarding loads of cash and treasure. Heck, even if you don't want the game you should buy it just to listen to the music.

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party - $8.99

Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party isn't as much a game as it is something cool you can do with three other people and a GamePad. While it might not be the system-defining title we've all been waiting for, it definitely does some interesting things with Nintendo's little tablet. Also, if the bottle lands on you, then you have to stay in the closet for the full seven minutes or you have to leave my party. Jerks.

Wii U Virtual Console

Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV Wall of Fire - $7.99

Things aren't looking good in China. In fact, the Second Han Dynasty is about to go kaput, and you're the only one that can save it. If you love looking at charts, boxes, dialogue and primitive spreadsheets then you just might be up to the task of saving this once great empire!

Senran Kagura Burst will be coming to North America as a downloadable title, courtesy of XSEED Games.

The game is a collection of two games: Senran Kagura and Senran Kagura Burst. The first game has been reworked with gameplay improvements.

Senran Kagura is a game series developed by Tamsoft that features a cast of female ninjas and side-scrolling action gameplay. A prominent feature of the game is that the characters clothes tear away gradually as they are damaged. In Japan there have been several entries in the series as well as various manga and an animated series.

The original Japanese audio will be left as is, XSEED will only be translating the text into English. The game is currently scheduled to be releasing in the fall on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

TalkBack / Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist Preview
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:24:37 PM »

Boy, do I miss the high-pitched hum of those night vision goggles.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/35091

I have a weird relationship with shooters. I love shooting things, but I’m cursed with terrible reflexes. So, for years, my go-to shooting games were more arcade-style, things like Metal Slug and Contra. While they still required fast reflexes, the punishment for losing was curbed enough that even I could enjoy them. Then one bright sunny day, Splinter Cell entered my life. Here was a game that relied on strategy and planning instead of lightning reflexes and twitchy thumbs.

I remember being impressed by the simple fact that I could shoot out lights in the first Splinter Cell. While it’s unlikely that Splinter Cell is the first franchise to offer this, I distinctly remember being enthralled that I was able to affect the environment. Not to mention the fact that Sam Fisher looked awesome. I mean, come on, Solid Snake has nothing on that full-body black jumpsuit complete with glowing night vision goggles.

Unfortunately, after Chaos Theory I fell out of sync with the franchise, and in my time away, the games have certainly changed quite a bit. I would catch bits and pieces of the game and see an old Sam Fisher sans his trademark suit battling some new set of mega-terrorists, but it hasn’t been until Blacklist emerged that I once again began to take notice.

What caught my eye immediately is what seems to be the marriage of the fluid bouncing-from-enemy-to-enemy combat of the new games with the strike-and-hide attacks that I remember. Sam may not look quite as awesome as my 13-year-old brain made him seem back in the day, but watching the combat in action still looks great.

Another returning feature is the very popular Spies vs. Mercs mode, which I never had the pleasure of experiencing in its heyday. So, while I can’t speak to how faithful it seems to the original version, it looks like it could be a lot of fun. I’ve always been more excited about the co-op missions, which I played many hours of in Chaos Theory. This leads to my only real point of contention for Blacklist: the Wii U version lacks offline co-op.

My best memories of Splinter Cell are summer nights playing split-screen coop with my friend at his mother’s lake house, and it saddens me that I won’t be able to experience that again. It still appears to have online co-op, which is a big plus, but dropping the offline version on the first console able to do split-screen without actually splitting the screen (why, hello GamePad screen!) seems like a lost opportunity.

Luckily, even with such a vital feature missing, Splinter Cell: Blacklist still looks like a good combination of the old tropes I remember with some of the better parts of the newer entries. This will also be my first real foray into Spies vs. Mercs, which I’m excited to finally dip my toe into. Either way, the Splinter Cell formula has always been satisfying, and there’s nothing quite as exciting as perfectly planning and executing a takedown. With any luck, Blacklist will continue this tradition when it launches on August 20.

TalkBack / Kickstarter Game Crypt Run Sets Wii U Stretch Goal
« on: August 05, 2013, 10:52:57 AM »

Hack-'n-slash game Crypt Run may be coming to a Wii U near you!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35085

Crypt Run, a hack-'n-slash game currently being funded on Kickstarter, is now working towards a Wii U stretch goal, as developer Lost Decade Games has become an authorized Nintendo developer.

While the game has hit its funding goal of $5,000, it will need a total of $13,500 to hit its Wii U stretch goal.

This will be developer Lost Decade Games' first console game, and they will be offering 100 Wii U codes for a donation of $15. The reason for the limited amount is that eShop developers may only give out a limited number of codes for their games.

If the stretch goal is not met, the developer plans to continue pursuing a Wii U release, possibly through an outlet such as PayPal, in hopes of allowing Nintendo fans to directly fund the game.

An early demo is available here.

I guess it does print money...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35088

Nintendo's recently released StreetPass games have made about $4 million dollars in their first month, according to Satoru Iwata in a recent interview with with Tokyo Keizai Online.

This is shortly after news that the games were selling very well. The paid additions to the StreetPass Plaza include four new games, and can be purchased individually for $5 each or as a bundle for $15. Hopefully this success will lead to more StreetPass games, as well as similar piecemeal experiences from Nintendo.

TalkBack / Mario Golf: World Tour Still Slated for 2014
« on: August 02, 2013, 07:40:31 PM »

Despite a recent listing, Mario's next sports game is set for release next year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35058

Mario Golf: World Tour is still coming out in 2014 despite being listed in Nintendo's recent financials as a summer release in North America, and late 2013 in Europe.

"Nintendo of America can confirm the game will be available in 2014," a Nintendo representative told us.

The game was originally slated for a summer release, but was delayed until 2014 during E3 this year. World Tour will finally bring online play to the Mario Golf franchise as well as a community feature, similar to that found in Mario Kart 7.

Tending crops and wrangling Pikmin.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35064

Did someone say, "biggest Wii U title of the fall?" Oh, you did? Why, yes, Pikmin 3 is going to be available this week! Along with Harvest Moon, Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Cloudberry Kingdom! Nintendo is stepping up their game once again and putting the hurt on your wallet, and I've never been happier about it. Let's be honest here, a week of ramen won't kill you, but another week without Pikmin just might.

3DS Retail Games

Disney Planes - $39.99, Available August 6

Wii U Retail Games

Pikmin 3 - $59.99, Available August 4

Disney Planes - $49.99, Available August 6

3DS eShop Games

Bike Rider DX - $5.99

If you like bikes and the riding of bikes then, boy, do I have a game for you! Collect gold coins, hop over penguins, and battle it out for the high score. Who doesn't like a nice relaxing bike ride? The game boasts a very simple control scheme: just jump. If you can't figure that one out you might want to put down the 3DS and seek medical attention.

My Farm 3D - $7.99

Unfortunately Harvest Moon is only available on the Wii U, unless you want to play the inferior Game Boy Color version. So what's a handheld gamer to do? Well, My Farm 3D is here to (possibly) satisfy your handheld farming lust. Experience such thrilling features as: feeding your cows, feeding your chickens, and selling eggs.

Family Kart 3D - $4.99

Apparently there's a whole series of games with the Family title. Who knew? Eight karts, 12 tracks, multiple difficulty modes – if you're a fan of family-oriented kart racing games then this sounds like the title for you. If you prefer your kart racing more vicious, then you might want to look elsewhere; you'll scare the children.

3DS Virtual Console

Kirby's Dream Land 2 - $3.99

Your favorite pink fluff ball is back for more platforming action! Heck, I don't even have a second favorite pink fluff ball, because Kirby takes up both spots in my heart. Something has happened to the seven Rainbow Bridges, and I have a good feeling as to who's responsible. Now, go find King DeDeDe and stuff that hammer down his throat.

Wii U eShop Games

Cloudberry Kingdom - $9.99

Stand aside, Ninja Gaiden, there's a new contender for the title of Hardest Freaking Game Ever Made. The procedurally generated levels guarantee an infinite amount of hair-pulling platforming, and with multiplayer you can bring over someone you love to take part in the teeth-gnashing difficulty!

Wii U Virtual Console

Harvest Moon - $7.99

Get ready to get your hands dirty with Harvest Moon! Get a farm, get a dog, and then get married in the game that launched the most successful farming-based Japanese RPG life-simulator franchise in the world. Yeah, it's a pretty niche market, but if you've never experienced finding virtual love, then now's your chance.

« on: August 01, 2013, 09:13:40 AM »

Japan gets to hunt all the cool monsters...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35062

Monster Hunter Frontier G is being ported to the Wii U. Frontier G is an online-only version of Monster Hunter 2 with additional content added.

The game's service will become available in Japan on November 20 for Wii U, and players will be able to take part in a free beta test for a week before the game releases.

Producer Kazunori Sugiura stated that they're "discussing something fun that [they] could do with the Wii U GamePad or Nintendo 3DS." The MMO-style game originally launched for the PC in 2007, and there is currently no word on whether or not the game will release outside of Japan.

The recently announced online mode for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins will not be available in the Wii U version of the game, according to a Warner Bros. representative.

The mode will allow players to work together to hunt down opponents, and has been confirmed for all other versions of the game.

This is unfortunate news for anyone wishing to purchase the Wii U version of the game, set to release October 25.

Justin Berube, Staff Writer

I was able to try Pikmin 3 at E3 and was very impressed, especially with the co-op Mission Mode. I had a great time with the demo and could see the potential for interesting gameplay mechanics, so I can't wait to get my hands on the final product. Also, when Pikmin 3 is released the grueling wait for both a new Pikmin game and a decent first party Wii U title will finally be over. Furthermore, I figure Pikmin 3's release is the unofficial relaunch of the Wii U since Nintendo appears to be trying to publish a new game each month for the platform, thus ending the software drought.

Pikmin has been one of my favorite Nintendo franchises since its introduction on the Gamecube, so any new entry is a huge excitement for me. The fact that it's been almost a decade since the last installment, with Miyamoto regularly hinting of a sequel along the way, only intensifies this excitement. When I went to E3 last year the Pikmin 3 demo station was one of my favorites, and I went back to it five times over the course of the show. This game alone would have sold me a Wii U even if there hadn't been other things I was interested in.

I was enthralled with the original Pikmin. In fact, shortly after I got the game I went on vacation, and made the mistake of taking my Gamecube with me. I spent the entire time sitting in our motel playing Pikimin and loving every minute of it. My favorite part was how detailed and fun the world was, and Pikmin 3 looks to be that same cute, slightly off-realistic world cranked up to 11. I can't wait to see all the little details and touches they've added in HD!

When I played the original Pikmin game, I did it in a way which mirrored Olimar's experience.  I played the game during night shifts of a summer college desk job, meaning that I was playing the game in a quiet environment, all by myself. Olimar may have been discovering a new world, but I was totally ignoring the world around me, focusing solely on watching him gather up these strange little creatures. When Pikmin 2 came around, I was initially a bit hesitant, as I didn't want to tarnish my sacred memories of the first game. After diving in, however, I found myself enchanted all over again.

Pikmin is a rare series that feels new to me, no matter what.  Even on my fifth playthrough of the original game, it feels foreign and alien to me, all the while feeling strangely familiar. It's the best kind of feeling, and one I can't wait to go through all over again.  I'm literally days away from playing it, and I can't get over the feeling that I'm in for one of the best games of the year.

Neal Ronaghan, Director

I don't know if hyped is the right term for my anticipation for Pikmin 3. I enjoyed Pikmin 1 despite abhorring the time restrictions, and I never played Pikmin 2 until last year's Wii re-release. I love the aesthetic of the series, but the gameplay, mainly because of all the time limits, never fully clicked with me. I wasn't truly excited for Pikmin 3 until this past E3, where the single-player and multiplayer was better displayed. I'm excited for the possibilities of Bingo Battle and co-op, and I look forward to living in that world. As of this moment, I plan on getting Pikmin 3 on day one, but I'm not totally married to that idea. At the GameStop Pikmin 3 event last week, I played the demo a few times. It was a challenge stage that featured a time limit. I loved it, but kept on wanting to explore it at my own pace. The game didn't allow me do that, and thus, I reached another Pikmin stalemate, where so much of it is something that hits me right in the heart, but then some design decisions just stress me out and annoy me.
