Broke gamers, this one is for you!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34600

Nintendo is looking to release a free-to-play game within the fiscal year, as stated in Tweets from David Gibson during a recent analyst meeting. Nintendo stated that the game wouldn't be set in the Pokémon or Mario universes, since those franchises were already established. The fiscal year they refer to ends March 2014.

The term free-to-play, sometimes abbreviated as F2P, means that the game itself can be purchased/downloaded at no cost, and that it can theoretically be played without ever paying anything. However, in this business model, the developers usually make money when players pay real money to purchase in-game items, expansions, or features that enhance their playing experience.

While little is known about Nintendo's free-to-play plans, NintendoWorldReport will be there to report it when Nintendo unveils their plan for the different style of gameplay it envisions.

Things are looking great for the little 3D handheld.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34599

David Gibson, a research analyst, tweeted during a Nintendo analyst briefing that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has boosted US 3DS sales by four times versus the prior week, and has set a new digital sales record in the eShop.

In related 3DS news, a Nintentendo analyst briefing stated that the market share of the system in the UK has grown to 19% in between January and March, to 23% in April, and to 26% in May.

Nintendo expects the 3DS lineup next year to be strong with less "intervals driven by [first] party titles," and plans to turn 28 thousand US (and 24 thousand European) wifi access points into what they call StreetPass relay stations to boost StreetPass usage.

TalkBack / New Pokémon Multiplayer System Revealed
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:41:34 PM »

Up to 100 friends, acquaintances and favorites.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34584

During the Pokémon X and Y roundtable event the Player Search System was revealed. Acting as the game's multiplayer hub, it will show friends, acquaintances, and people passed on the bottom screen. Ideally this would be always connected to keep you up to connected to friends and other players.

Whenever you interact with a player they can be registered as an acquaintance, and after more than one interaction the game even prompts you to do so.

Up to 100 friends/favorites can be saved in the PSS. Friends will be automatically imported from your 3DS friends lists and added to the PSS

The Director's Cut is coming to the 360, PS3, PC, and Mac.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34572

Square Enix has confirmed that Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut is no longer exclusive to the Wii U, and will be releasing on 360, PS3, PC and Mac.

This is frustrating news for Wii U owners who were told that this version of the game would have features only capable on the Wii U. This begs the question: was that simply not true or are the Wii U specific features being ported to the other systems somehow?

The Sword & Sorcery developer has some good news for indie game fans.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34569

In an interview with VG24/7, Nathan Vella of Capybara Games (Super Time Force, Sword & Sorcery) said that he's seen "Nintendo making a big move to try and get smaller, unique, independent games on Wii U."

He goes on to say that they're reaching out to developers, and although they're "playing catch up," they're putting forth significant effort with people like Dan Edelman manning their downloadable division.

This is great news from Vella, and if true it could mean that Nintendo is poised to unfold their eShop into something big. With two new systems coming out this holiday season to compete with, indie games could give Nintendo the edge they need.

Island hopping and vikings! What's not to love?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34565

In a developer interview on Nintendo's YouTube channel with Kensuke Tanabe, it was revealed that, in addition to Diddy and Dixie, there is still a third unannounced playable character.

Tanabe also detailed a new plucking and throwing mechanic, similar to Super Mario Bros. 2, and showed how plucking certain items can also be used to solve puzzles.

He also spoke about the new camera rotation present, which breaks from the series' tradition of using only 2D planes. This allows the camera to pan around as the player moves through the level to reveal new areas.

Tanabe's team wanted to use powerful water-focused animals in the game, which led to their choice of seafaring vikings as enemies. The game will focus on this water theme by having players hop from island to island as they progress throughout the game.

Hopefully this option will be available soon along with the promised smart phone and 3DS versions of Miiverse, allowing more people to connect through Nintendo's social network. With any luck, we will hear more at E3.

At least the Wii U Basic sets from GameStop won't be lonely...

Best Buy is joining GameStop in returning their new stock of Wii U Basic units.

A member of our community recently sent in an internal Best Buy document stating that the store "should pull all new in box units and send them back," under a section saying that they are "to be returned via Sendback."

Best Buy will be sending back stock on June 10 - 11, a week ahead of GameStop. According to Nintendo, the returns are part of a stock "rebalance." The Best Buy notice further notes that there should be "more Wii U Deluxe units arriving in the coming weeks."

TalkBack / Mutant Mudds Deluxe Review
« on: June 08, 2013, 07:06:01 PM »

Beat the summer heat with Maxwell and his water gun!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/34483

It’s always exciting when a game comes along that is not only a great game, but also a perfect way to showcase the hardware it’s on. Mutant Mudds was a great example of this when it originally launched on the 3DS last year. The plane-switching platforming made perfect use of the 3D, and to boot, it was a great game. So, I openly admit that I was a little worried when I heard Mutant Mudds Deluxe was going to be on the Wii U, because so much of the charm of the original game came from how well it showcased the hardware. Fortunately, Renegade Kid proved me completely wrong.

Unlike most games that simply mirror the same action on both screens, here the GamePad shows a zoomed-in view. It’s so minor that, for a while, I didn’t even notice it, until I took the time to look closely. I had found myself naturally using the GamePad when the game got harder to see, but it took close examination to realize that it had been designed that way. The GamePad view is nearly identical to the view on the 3DS, but supplementing it with the expanded version on the television makes surveying the levels and planning your next move substantially easier. At the same time, it makes a few of the levels easier as well by allowing you to see more enemies and obstacles ahead of you. The plethora of controller options allows you to play the game however you want: GamePad/TV, just the GamePad, or the Classic Controller.

Working my way through even the basic levels again was still exciting, and the bright, sharp pixel graphics really pop on both screens. Watching a big-screen Maxwell blast mud monsters felt great, and the animation is a sight to behold, especially when you can see everything down to the very last pixel.

The soundtrack has left me humming all afternoon after each session with the game, and the “bloop” of Maxwell’s water gun has never sounded better. Of course, Mutant Mudds is still about patience and proper timing, so even when you find yourself falling on spikes, you know exactly what put you there. With the same devious level design omnipresent in both the old and new content, it’s hard not to fall in love with the game all over again.

The biggest new feature is a whole new set of ghost levels piled on top of the already daunting amount of existing ones. Luckily, they’re just as fun and challenging as the rest of the game. Returning players will be excited to learn that you can go directly to the ghost world levels right from the beginning, which is great news. My only real disappointment with the new content is that there are no bonus levels for the ghost world, which feels a bit like a missed opportunity. The bonus levels were super-short, retro-inspired mini-levels that used graphical styles based on various retro game systems (Game Boy/Virtual Boy). I would have loved to see some new styles (DOS-themed bonus levels anyone?), but the fact that all 20 of the original levels have been re-done in ghost form means that even without them there is still plenty of new content to dig through. The new levels themselves are much more difficult, and the new enemies (and ghost versions of old enemies) in them can only be killed by finding a weapon upgrade hidden in levels. For the most part, you’ll have to jump and jet your way around your foes to make it to the end of the level.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe is an example of platformers at their best, and it is worth picking up even if you own the game in its original 3DS format. Renegade Kid has given us plenty of reason to invest in Maxwell’s NES-style adventure all over again. For neophytes, the difficulty is reduced with the new checkpoint system, which makes getting through each level less frustrating. It’s a simple addition that may not make it possible for untalented players to make it through all the content, but it does make getting through the basic levels a much more achievable goal.

The game isn’t weighed down by copious story or in-depth upgrade systems, it’s just a boy, his grandma, and a heaping helping of baddies; it is pure platforming bliss. The deluxe version of the game is equal parts delicate retooling and new content, making it perfect for old and new fans alike.

TalkBack / Aonuma Talks About Zelda on Wii U and 3DS
« on: June 08, 2013, 08:17:35 AM »

Am I the only one hoping for more Navi!?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34471

In an interview with Edge magazine, Aonuma spoke about both the unnanounced Wii U Zelda game and the upcoming Link to the Past 2.

Aonuma stated that Link to the Past 2 would "play very differently to the original," and went on to say that they will "introduce even more unexpected elements in the Zelda game [they're] making for Wii U."

Of course, these are still very vague statements from Aonuma, but this could be a sign that we'll be seeing more Wii U Zelda in the near future, hopefully at E3.

Other platforms still on track.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34475

Capcom has recently listed the release date of the Wii U version of their upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara as pending, going against earlier statements (as well as Nintendo's own site) that it would be released June 18.

While there has been no word from Capcom concerning why there has been a delay, but this is unfortunate news for such a high profile eShop release. The PSN & Steam versions are still on schedule for June 18, with the XBLA version releasing June 19.

Features swappable parts and backwards compatibility.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34472

The latest entry in the blockbuster Skylanders franchise will release on Wii U, 3DS and Wii in North America on October 13, with Europe and Australia close behind on October 18.

SWAP Force features new figures that allow players to swap the bottom and top halves of the figures, as well as new ways to get around such as flying, climbing and teleporting. The new game will also be compatible with figures from previous games, and pre-orders for SWAP Force starter packs will begin today, June 7.

Some retailers will be offering specific figures as pre-order bonuses, so be sure to keep a close eye on who you pre-order the game from.

Maybe they will finally reveal Poison's secret!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34470

Brady Games is putting together Capcom's upcoming 30th anniversary character encyclopedia, set to release on October 21.

According to the Amazon product page, it will offer facts, statistics and historical information about nearly 200 characters featured in the book.

It also promises to "shed new light" on some characters, which gives Capcom fanatics plenty to look forward to. Capcom's official anniversary is on June 11, the first day of E3 2013.

TalkBack / The PrE3view: What We Expect at E3 2013
« on: June 07, 2013, 11:03:04 AM »

With E3 fast approaching, we compile what we know and what we expect for Wii U and 3DS at this year's convention.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/34417

It is that time of year once again, folks. In just one week from now, the fun, furore and festivities of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2013 will get underway. As most of us already know, Nintendo has opted to scale back their media events, eschewing the usual massive, showy press conference in favour of several smaller presentations via their video format, Nintendo Direct.

Some people might have interpreted this move as a vote of no-confidence from The Big N, as if to say that they don't have enough software to merit a presence at E3. However, with the 3DS looking to sustain its current momentum and the Wii U in desperate need of momentum, this is a very important expo for Nintendo systems.

As it turns out, there will actually be a lot of software for Nintendo platforms making an appearance, with more expected to make their public debut, so the NWR staff dug up all we could on the games, announced or unannounced. Join us over the next few days as we prepare for gaming's biggest show of the year as we examine the software on show.

Let the hype train roll!

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - June 6, 2013
« on: June 06, 2013, 11:42:21 AM »

Take a deep breath and say it with me: Animal Crossing is almost here!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34466

Well, the bad news is that this month we're getting one of the weaker titles from the Famicom Anniversary promotion. The good news is that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is now poised to utterly consume your life! Hopefully next week we see some stronger Virtual Console releases, but I'll probably be too busy running around a brightly colored animal world to even notice.

Wii U eShop Sales:

Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth - $29.99

Trine 2: Director's Cut - $9.99 (Until 9 a.m. PT June 27)

3DS eShop:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Releases midnight ET, June 9) - $34.99

It's time. Get your 3DS ready and prepare to start the cycle all over again. Tree shaking, fruit collecting, fossil identifying, and, finally, more town customization than you can shake a shovel at. If you have a 3DS, you need this game.

Wii U Virtual Console:

Yoshi (Releases June 12) - $0.30

The newest entry in the ongoing Famicom Anniversary promotion takes the form of the lovable 1992 puzzle game Yoshi. Yoshi has gotten himself trapped inside an egg (again?) and it's up to Mario to save him by…stacking falling enemies? Well it made more sense in 1992.

Spelunker - $4.99

Spelunker may not be the best Nintendo game, or even a great one, but is has something that most games don't: an intentionally weak protagonist. One of the villains you'll find yourself facing off against is the dreaded steam vent, bane of over-styled hairdos the world over! Prepare your adventuring spirit for some crushing defeat.

Wii Virtual Console:

Sengoku 3 - 900 Nintendo Points

I haven't given up on the Wii Virtual Console, and neither should you because Sengoku 3 has arrived! Go dig out that Nintendo Points card and spend some time cutting the faces off your enemies with ninja arts and four characters to choose from.

TalkBack / GameStop May No Longer Be Selling Wii U Basic Set
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:30:16 PM »

Out with the old, in with the new!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/34451

The Wii U Basic Set will no longer be sold by GameStop and all stores will be returning their new stock of the system by June 18, according to a source who contacted Kotaku.

Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of Corporate Communications, said in a statement to Polygon that "Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market."

While they haven't directly denied the claims made by Kotaku, this does mean that the system is not being recalled.

This is shortly following the news that a white version of the 32GB Deluxe Set will be hitting Japan on July 13.
