TalkBack / Re: On Punch-Out!! And Review Scores
« on: January 22, 2015, 08:25:26 PM »
Thanks for posting this.  It reminded me that I wanted to buy the digital copy of Punch-Out.  So I went and did it.  I love that I don't have a Wii U and yet I can buy the eshop games anyways.
Wait how did you but it if you don't own a Wii U?.

If I'm interested in a game I'll read reviews from several different scores. If a reviewer gave it a lot score I'll read it to see if the things that bothered him will also bother me. If he gave it a high score I'll look to see if the things he liked will also appeal to me. There are 9 and 10 point games that don't speak to me at all and there are t and 6 point games that I've enjoyed, but the numbers are still helpful to me as I determine which reviews to read because as was said earlier I don't have time to read anywhere near them all

My biggest beef with the Wii Punch-Out is not that it isn't a good game.  Its that it felt when I was playing it more like a $20-30 eShop game.
Perfect now it's $10 this week and $20 any time after that

It was a brief moment of joy, followed by crushing dissapointment, followed by a salve of "Wait, I loved that game."
Great way to boil my paragraph into a single sentence

So I'm planning on buying this game after work today, but I've never played it. If the text of your review would be the same are you willing to tell us what score 2015 Neal would give this game?

I had the exact same reaction as James Jones when they Fire Emblem trailer started. I literally jumped off my seat and started dancing only for my jubilation to be muted when the 3DS screen popped up.
I had a mixed reaction. I've been hoping that Intelligent Systems would release Advance Wars next so when I saw Fit Emblem it was a major let down. Then I realized I absolutely loved Awakening (the only FE game I've ever played) then I felt better, but I still wish it was AW
By the way, for anyone that hasn't had this realization, I'm normally a 1 play through guy with my games I almost never replay games, but with awakening I played casual the first time through and then decided just to try classic to see if I'd like it. Turns out the strategy is so different I couldn't stop. Note I really how the new one let's you code again because it seriously felt like a different game so I literally got 2 games for the price of 1

Curtis, will it play my DS games or did they gut that like they gutted GameCube support from the later iteration of Wii?

Thanks for mentioning the possibility of downloading DS games on 3DS. I'd happily download Advance Watts Dual Strike (only advance wars game I don't own) and both DS Zelda games (I was in college when they came out and never got to playing them)
I'm sure there are also others as I never owned a DS (dang that tight college budget)

If you could make a decision in the next week and a half Punch Out Wii would be fun. Right now you can get it on eBay for about $20, but starting Thursday it'll be $10 to download for the first week.

I'm currently on my second play-through of Fire Emblem Awakening.
I had been hoping for another Advance Wars, but I'll be happy to pop this into my 3DS
Hopefully it's as good as it sounds!

What's with all this 3DS doom and gloom? I just got off a cruise, I took my 3DS and ran into plenty of people that had and brought their 3DS and were playing games they'd just bought

Actually, Leo13, it was just a joke.  Basically a take on the theme music of Megas XLR.  Remember that cartoon?
Oh sorry man not only do I not remember that cartoon, I've never heard of it. How old is it? If it's an 80's thing then I was probably too young (born in'85)

I actually agree with Enner in that Nintendo didn't have more produced because there was a ligitimate chance that nobody was going to buy Amiibo. Now that people are buying them Nintendo is (I assume) working on increasing production, but that takes time.
I'm just glad I don't feel compelled to buy all of them. I bought 3 Amiibo Link for me, Mario for my son and Samus for my daughter. (It'll be hard not to buy Shulk as Xenoblade is my all time favorite game and now that Codename Steam has support for Fire Emblem characters I can see myself buying a couple of those).

Irony - the game NOA had to partner with someone else to agree to localize is now the sole New 3DS exclusive and thus carries the expectations of a system seller.  So are NOA just a bunch of jackasses now eating crow or is this actually a really poor strategy?  I mean the game SHOULD sell systems in a perfect world because it is so awesome but there is no accounting for people's tastes.  NOA saw it as unsellable, NCL seems to see it as a killer app.  I think it really falls in between.  It's a truly exceptional game that's complicated enough that it wouldn't have mass appeal.

It's almost as if Japan and America are different markets that want different things, particularly from handhelds.

Yes, and what does America have to sell New 3DS's?  That's my point.  NCL has provided one exclusive game for the New 3DS launch for all regions and it's one that NOA feels their region didn't even want.
They also didn't think it would sell on Wii, but they sold out twice and ended up selling more copies than Japan or Europe

Wow I love this game.

I'm double dipping. I shouldn't, but I can't help myself.

I have Breath of Fire 2 for the Wii virtual console. In my humble opinion it was extremely archaic for a 1994 RPG. The original cannot be more advanced so I would expect high difficulty, frustrating menus/experience gain/progression, unclear game concepts, SLOW battles, LOTS of game over screens, and LOTS of repetition.  I did finish BoF2, but will probably never play it again.  I love challenges, such as Etrian Odyssey (I have them all, and finished them all except for untold). I would put BoF2 in the same category as Final Fantasy I I I (the DS remake)...too outdated and unbalanced to be any fun.
Thanks for the info sounds like something I don't want

I never played this game. Is it very good?

Sorry to tell you Wii U IV Life, but normally chicks don't dig guys like us who only fly in Mechs in video games.

However, this game has me incredibly excited.

My remaining question:
Now that they are allowing Wii games to be downloaded on Wii U, will they allow Xenoblade to be downloaded in an attempt to get as much exposure as possible before the Release of Xenoblade X or will they decide not to in an attempt to sell more copies on the new 3DS in April?

The last Wii game they ported to 3DS (DKCR) was priced at $35. So assuming the same price structure:
sell Xenoblade to only owners of New 3DS (there won't be very many) for $35-cost of cartridge-GameStops's cut so I don't know maybe $20 each
or sell to New 3DS owners AND Wii U owners (as weird as this will sound there are more Wii U owners so it could be a big boon) at $20 each

I'm hoping they go for the both option as I'm still actively playing the game (yes I discovered it late and paid $80 for my copy) I'm about 55 hours in and if I can download it onto my Wii U that would mean I could continue with my current save file and sell the disc (I'm sure there will be people that don't own a Wii U or New 3DS that will want to try the game still)

For all intents and purposes, New 3DS is going to be treated like a regular 3DS.

And Nintendo is smartly launching with Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4. It got that part right so I don't see this being a botched launch by any measure. The absent AC adapter is kind of lame, but I have one. Nintendo solidified my decision for me by not offering the color I wanted.
Zelda IS the color I wanted. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the fire emblem one and the Link Between Worlds ones

Then why is every other region getting the game pre-loaded?
I don't claim to know everything, but with all the currency fluctuations and the fact the Europe's game are usually more expensive I try not to compare our prices and value to Europe's or Japan's I just compare it to my other options here.

Not me I'm all in. I bought a small 3DS years ago and passed it to my wife when I got the XL. Now I'll pass the small to my 5 year old and the XL to my wife cause I'm getting the New XL

Are you guys serious???
They are releasing a much better version of the 3DS XL FOR THE SAME PRICE and when it doesn't come with a game (just like the 3DS XL doesn't currently come with a game) you whine and cry???
They are a business and need to make money. Besides wouldn't most of you prefer a physical copy anyway.
I'm impressed that they are getting me a system with better hardware for the same price as the old hardware.
I plan on getting this one, and I won't complain about it.

Funny thing is...if they had included a digital copy with the system a bunch of you would complain that it's not a physical copy and a bunch of you would complain that you now have to buy the game twice cause you really want that skull kid statue in the special edition. Now you can get the special edition and the physical copy and the awesome 3DS
