No ****, it was pushed on to all online connected 3DS.

252
I love how these no-name sites split rumours into separate links for more clicks.

253
Well Azeke if that is the case then I give up.
What i meant is that there are more worlds coming after that Bowser boss fight. Not levels -- full fledged worlds and arguably the best ones too both in terms of visuals and level design.

I made it all the way to the end of Super Mario 3D World, I died a few times on the last tower climb segment...
You're not even close to the end though...

- "Advanced techniques" like the triple jump and long jump return.
Advanced techniques never really went away.

Long jump was in Galaxy and 3D Land /World games too, it was only cut in Sunshine. In fact 3D Land/World only added to the pool advanced techniques.

Not sure if it is intentional or not, but that video never shows left detachable part of the controller.

You can kinda see that it has split d-pad a-la Dualshock and it makes sense because each half should feature as it's own controller in it's own right and split d-pad will work as four face buttons.

Split controllers are back!

So that means that plastic shell that combines two halves literally does nothing, because you can control the game without it.

But the best games in the series aren't even in the list!

Donkey Kong 94 and Jungle Beat

I decided to go ahead and pick up Donkey Kong for original Game Boy.
Such a fantastic BIG little game. Pitch perfect example of Nintendo design.

Very tempted by Binding of Isaac Rebirth, with 40% discount it's gonna be cheaper than regular price on Steam, though i expect Steam going lower come next seasonal sale. That and Rebirth is going to be two versions behind once AfterBirth+ hits (supposedly -- this year).

But i will be buying NES Castlevania games on 3DS for sure. It's about time i started the series.

Also, Binding of Isaac is a New 3DS exclusive.

10 000 000 (Steam):
Finally got the last achievement.

It's a match-3 puzzle game but you need to match certain things to go past monsters and other obstacles and do it fast because game gets faster and faster.

I was kinda hoping to get more skill based gameplay akin to Puzzle and Dragons but it's closer to PuzzleQuest it it's randomness where pieces falling from the ceiling filling up empty spaces largely determine the outcome. Ah well.

I got to the end relatively quickly, but the last challenge to achieve 10 000 000 points on Explorer level took me a month of playing on lunch breaks. I even thought of clearing save and restarting it the game, but today i finally lucked into the win.

Randomness situation is worsened by controls forbidding to move pieces while your combo is still going. You need to match pieces constantly not to die because game doesn't stop as more pieces fall. Very often you might just die in the middle of a 5+ chain match without even a chance to even do anything because of this.

Whatever, i'm glad it's over.

Also got last achievements on Legend of Korra game (felt kinda sad) and Brothers: Tale of two sons -- funnily one of the last achievements was to sit on one bench that i missed, because back when i played the game i kept sitting on every bench i could see, but i missed one single one that actually leads to achievement.

I have several Xbox original games (Mercenaries, Burnout 3, Ninja Gaiden Black, Spiderman 2), but i play them on 360.

Also does it have to remain plugged in at all times to keep the clock and date settings?
Look up if xbox has a battery to keep current time information. Maybe you need to replace it.

One of the first surprising things about this game is that is is dubbed into everything: german, french, even russian.

High, cinema quality dub into all european languages is very rare to see, only very high profile games receive it.

I suspect LEGO paid for this because they tried to make LEGO City project more of a thing, with this game and animated shorts on TV. I really can't think Nintendo agreeing to this.

Then why LEGO put it on Wii U only -- i don't know. Maybe it was Bayonetta 2 situation where Nintendo agreed  to pay for the completion of LEGO's inhouse big long-term game project at the cost of making it exclusive?

Rive (Steam):

Since it's not coming on Wii U (in foreseeable future anyway), i bought it on Steam.

Frenetic run and gun action, shooty explodey fun. You die often because the game die gets too intense for it's own good. This might be an annoyance in one-life mode, but for now it doesn't really matter.

You are mostly running and jumping around but there are also sequences where you are inside Jungle Beat-like bubbles and have full flying controls, then the game turns into basically dual stick shooter:

Jumping is put on left trigger button which is unorthodox but makes totally sense -- with your right thumb reserved exclusively for shooting you just can't put jump on A.

I think it is highly reductive "good plot" is just drama, mostly derived from someone dying. Developers thinking that good story amounts to nothing but (cheap and predictable) attempts at wringing some tears out of a player make game uniform and boring, not even speaking at the damage this inflicts to gameplay.

What about game like kid Icarus Uprising or Wonderful 101 which also have dramatic even apocalyptic moments, but also feature into much more diverse and wide spectre of emotions like sense of wonder, satisfaction and even outright euphoria of the grand finale.

I guess this is my Batman month.

Batman: Arkham City (Wii U):

I am playing a bit of New Game+. When starting it i was relieved and almost disappointed (almost) that the game doesn't force you to collect trophies all over again. It's been years when i completed it and doing that insane collectathon all over again would be kinda nostalgic.

Man that "console" framerate... At least combat was made better, but low 20 frames per second makes it worse than it is.

Because NG+ has no collectibles it's more of a linear story (whereas playing "normally" i would more likely to postpone doing story missions for as long as possible), though i did notice game asked me to do some VR mission so maybe i have to re-do some side-missions...

Arkham Knight had changed button layout somewhat, so re-learning stuff for Asylum was kind weird. It got weirder when i had to re-learn again for City where buttons were re-arranged again.

Oh and i am also playing that Batman game on 3DS. It is eh, and i constantly find myself confused with it's 3d directions that are actually 2d.

Oh, and 3DS game also has somewhat different buttons, like having to press A for crouching.

Playing so many similar games with kinda similar but still different button shortcuts makes my finger memory very confused.

Shadow or Mordor (Steam):
You don't know how good you have it in one series, until you play a game which rips it off and kinda does badly.

Getting surrounded by hundreds of orcs is just not fun. At least Batman games have other activities you can do

I am constantly harping on Batman combat and here is a game where the entirety of gameplay is nothing but killing baddies using Batman style combat. That is literally ALL you do.

Good job, Monolith.

The game is not exactly a looker:

It also lacks what i really enjoy in both Assasin Creed and Batman games -- layered 3d architecture for me to climb. Mordor is mostly completely flat. The map is also rather small, but it is very densely populated which is more of problem because you are constantly surrounded by endless army of orcs and you can't kill them all ever. There will always be 100s of orcs around you no matter what you do.

Nemesis system is kinda cool in principle but it is a poor replacement for proper bosses. Why should i bother gathering intel on some Warchief learning his weaknesses if i can still just walk up to him and kill him regularly in combat?

Were people THAT enticed by WB bribing them to prop that game up to make it their GOTY? Many publications and awards did it, passing over Bayonetta 2 which while an inferior to first game still is much more solid action game and a shining beacon of game design and polish compared to this mongrel of Assassin Creed and Batman which lacks most things that i like from both series.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (Steam):
After enjoying Arkham Knight i decided to revisit original game and collect everything this time. Weird, i don't think i did 100% first time but i vaguely remembered the reward for 100% completion (i probably just looked it up and downloaded audio file or something)...

Coming back to the first game after so many years is weird. It has very much "Unreal game" look: plasticky models, texture visibly loading in and overall muddy look.

And overall UI and man these designs are weird:

I think the idea was to make it look more like a comic book with yellow ink and sepia-like filter during pause.

Still it's impressive how many things they got right from the get go: signature death animations, DC fanservice, detective mode, grappling hook, cape flying, various gadgets. You can only grapple from the ground and that makes flying like in Arkham City onwards impossible but what is there is still very cool.

Also it is nice to play a Batman game in 60 fps for once -- all other Arkham games i played had much lower framerate. Fluidity of the action still doesn't fix stiff by design combat but it is something.

They were quite proud of the combat, because they even made up a name for it and emphasized it with combat challenges. And while it must have been good for western game standards for the time, it has huge problems (still does): keeping "freeflow" ™ up is much harder than it needs to be: if don't do anything for longer than .7 of a second -- it drops. If you whiff and Batman strikes at empty air because mook fell to the ground -- it drops. If you expect nearby enemy to attack after you finish the animation and you press parry button in advance but he doesn't in fact attack -- it drops.

All this makes completing combat challenges more of a grind of repetition until you luck into the sequence where everything goes your way instead of proper accumulation of skill.

At least after almost a decade i finally realized how critical hits in Arkham games work.

Hard mode where enemy incoming attack markers are disabled is kind cool but i don't think it makes much of a difference because after spending some time in combat challenges you start to recognize which goon is gonna attack you even before the marker even appears because he will be running towards you. This "removing enemy attack marker" mode is similar to Viewtiful Joe's hardest mode with the similar gimmick.

Predator challenges however i genuinely enjoyed. They're more like a puzzle and figuring exactly how and in what order you need to do to hit all three medals was very interesting.

Completing 100% Riddler secrets was kinda disappointing though. There were all placed either right there in the open, or behind destructable wall or in the form of "aligning puzzle":

That's just three types of puzzles across 243 secrets. Good that City started to bring much more variety to puzzle solution rather than just "enter Detective mode and rotate camera until you a question mark". On the other hand City also doubled number of secrets and introduced rather annoying AR missions.

Also because of the way levels are constructed it was annoying to spend 10 minutes going inside the building to pick up last 2 secrets and then spend 10 minutes going back outside because there is only one way in and out and you need to climb that very high elevator shaft.

I also made sure to look at Arkham City tease in Warden's office. I even remembered exactly which wall needs how many explosive charges to get access to it.

So you actually liked the tank battles?
They're not good, but tolerable. Just don't do too many of them one after another and spread them out given that game allows it.

Batman: Arkham Knight (PC):

I was expecting deeply derivative product with now famous performance problems on PC, something like Assasin's Creed Unity. Was i wrong. This game is amazing.

First Arkham game i liked well enough. It was a very good low-brow entertainment: satisfying power of Batman fighting mooks, exhilarating cape flying, some puzzle-solving and DC fanservice though the game targeted teenage boys a bit too blatantly with character designs. Combat was dumb and simplistic, bosses were bad as usual for western studio, but overall the game was enjoyable as a hamburger-tier game.

Arkham City was basically more of the same and put Batman in a huge city filled with pretty much the same but on a bigger scale: more mooks to fight, more puzzles and trophies to collect, more flying on cape through rings. It also solidified the structure, pacing of how the game dolls out challenges for you to choose from. There were 400 secrets that you had to do or collect. Some of the challenges were quite annoying to do.

Arkham Origins, in my opinion was the most polished out of them all which is a given because it came after City. Before Origins i wasn't really captivated by these games' stories, but i really liked Origins plot and especially it's ridiculously overproduced cutscenes. Otherwise it was kinda rehash of City but i thought it was overall a better made game. It added detective sequences and had less collectathon with just 200 secrets too.

By fourth game Arkham series has probably reached the peak of what hamburger-style AAA production can achieve. It builds on everything all 3 previous games did and makes the whole package better and more diverse. By the time i was done with Arkham City i was exhausted by the repetition, but not in this game.

The strength of Arkham Knight is how proficiently it's made. It drips out new missions organically little by little not allowing player to be intimidated by hundreds of markers on open-world map. By adding several new types of activities with batmobile, finally Arkham games have achieved the level of variety where none of the activites don't actually get old by the end. There a lot of various side-missions you can make progress in simultaneously but most of them are not as prolonged as stuff in City and Origins and that's why it doesn't get repetitive.

Fighting mooks or taking them out stealthily, flying, racing, racing with flying at the end, racing with vehicular combat, tank style vehicular combat, puzzles, environment puzzles are back (i missed them in Origins).

Evev the bosses -- usually the worst part of any western AAA production are decent enough. The clearly realized where their strengths lie and made most bosses easy enough so not to get annoying. Some bosses are literally just one button press at the right time but it's so well done.

Story really goes some places and Hamill is delivering the best voice work of his career:

Plot pulls from BTAS, from "Killing Joke", "Death in the Family", "Under the Red Hood". Origins already had a great "Killing Joke" Red Hood flashback scene that was the highlight of the entire game, but Arkham Knight shoots amazing flashbacks and story pieces like that one after another.

Manic, deppressive atmosphere of the game with Batman getting the closest than ever to cross over the edge are helped by great camera work in hallucination scenes and small details like bugs crawling everywhere. Game managed to fool and pleasantly surprise me all the way to the end and even past that -- in New Game+

And it looks amazing too:

Pretty picture comes at a price and there are performance problems, especially during vehicular segments (game lags when rotating camera too fast or just when making sudden turns), but it is playable enough for other types activites: flying over the city districts is especially impressive.

I always really liked layered 3d design of Gotham across it's many incarnations. Gotham in Shumacher movies with it's crazy architecture especially impressed me. Arkham Knight's Gotham is more vertical than ever with overpasses built over other overpasses, over ground train lines, gothic skyscrapers, futuristic towers, and construction cranes on top of the modern glass and steel buildings.

This game introduces Batmobile as a main way to get around, to give it more purpose a lot of puzzles were made to justify it's presence and there are a lot of drone battles where you transform into Bat-tank and fight automated drone-tanks. Whole Batmobile business is kinda clunky but it helps to break monotony.

Great game. Sure there are some problems with framerate but outside of that it's an apex of what modern game developer can do with established open-world formula. Very enjoyable game, all the way from beginning to the end.

Vertical layout raises eyebrows at first, but i think this was the gimmick that Nintendo decided will differentiate this from thousands of other runners of phones. It is also places more importance on jumps, wall jumps and tricks over just reaching the goal.
