When do you get spikes for your ball?
One of the unlocks in the Wonderful Mart you get about 50% into the game.

One thing i forgot about Wonderful Mart: most of the goods there are pretty expensive. To help with that you can mix Nelson's credit card with 30-30-30 recipe. It can buy anything no matter the price.

Note how here i am buying an item that is worth 800 000 parts but i only have 273 000 parts. Good thing i had this credit card here.

That's really the only thing worth mixing apart from doing mixing specifically for achievement.

I'll come back and read this for my second play through.
You should at least skim it, to help you if you get too confused. And there's always MiiVerse.
Also check Platinum Game blog, just yesterday they dropped a bomb of a blogpost full of tricks that i didn't even knew were in the game. Like, taunting.

2077
A few more advices from my miiverse:

Platforming:

If you're like me, you hold Y almost constantly, because that makes crowd all gather round the leader in a neat tight circle. But when you are platforming you need to see exactly where you leader is, so you should release Y during these sequences. Crowd will stop clouding around leader and you will see him/her clearly.

Ukemi:

Ukemi is one the later abilities you get in the game. It's extremely useful and extremely unexplained. I am playing this game for three weeks now and i only lately got the hang of it.
When your leader gets hit and flies away, you need to press B (jump button) just when he is about to touch the ground. Then leader does crazy jump on his hands and lands on his feet. That's what is shown on the screenshot. This ukemi animation takes about second or two and enemies can't harm you during it.
It's exactly like quick fall recovery in modern fighting games (MK9, Tekken, King of Fighters and Smash Bros) where you press some button when you fall on the ground and get up instantly.

W101 is actually a puzzle game:
All enemies in this game, including bosses, are actually puzzles -- if you know how to solve it, it's pretty easy. The great part about W101 is that there are many different solutions and people keep finding more and more as they play.

One of hardest "puzzles" in W101 are turtles. It's obvious you're supposed to smack them with hammer until they lose their armour but that takes huge amounts of time and turtles' attacks are surprisingly quick and very damaging.
There are many different "solutions":
  • wait so they lift one paw and place pudding where they gonna put it. That will stagger them for a bit. While they're about to tople over and have opened their underbelly a bit, hit it with everything you got. Then they will fall over on the their back exposing their weak spot completely.
  • screenshot above is me doing second way to deal with turtles. What i am doing is Hammer Rising (Launcher, B then A). Hammer rising does incredible damage to turtles -- 25% or so. And in the middle of animation you float in the air way above the ground where turtles can't hit you. And then you do second hit with a hammer. Three-four Hammer Risings will kill any turtle. You just have to time it right so that you don't get hit during initial launch. You have to watch out for 1) other turtle's head 2) your turtle's paws 3) other turtle's paws -- if they're doing fire attack -- cancel your attack and move away.
  • turtle's file in geathjerk archives says something about using a whip on their hook shaped tails, but i never was able to do it properly
  • when turtle has lost 50% of its health, their armour cracks to pieces and turtles become open to any attack compared to before when only hammer was able to harm them and everything else just fell apart on contact. For examply you can literally do circles around them with Spiked Ball (ZR, ZR):

The other "puzzle" that becomes trivial after you figured it out is Vorkken:

The lesson he "teaches" you is proper blocking. Vorkken is actually very easy to counter and he has almost robotic super-predictable AI.

When you just standing near him doing nothing, he will morph into either Fist or Hammer and both are blockable with pudding. When his fist or hammer falls apart that opens up a second or two for you to attack him. Then repeat the routine: come closer to him, lure out his fist or hammer, block and retaliate.

You can shoot at him when he's shocked, but don't shoot when he still has his teammates around, in response he will make his own bazooka and will shoot you.

Same for other weapons -- he usually has the similar canned response patterns for all your morphs. Often he will do block himself to crush your morph and then will do cyclone sword or whip right away, so it's best not to attack him first.

Just do the routine -- come closer, block, retalitate.

However I do think Yoshi's Island has yet to meet it's match within its own series.
Love this game so much, i first tried DS game and it just felt so bland, and a few months later i tried GBA port and it blew my mind how good it was.
Absolutely perfect game if there ever was one.

Well so far it looks like Unalaq is gonna be the main villain, just like Tarlok he creates conflict to seize more power for himself. I definitely bet on that it's him controlling the spirits all along.

Otherwise -- great start.

New animation studio is kinda bad, way too animey and gets off model too often. The art despite occasionally wonky animation is still gorgeous though.

NEWS flash: if you can manage new control methods, you're a dirty liar.

Don't have much to contribute, because i only started really playing on consoles just a few years ago. But as i person completely free of nostalgia i definitely prefer NSMB series (any of the four, really) over SMB3 which i didn't enjoy at all because ironically i think it controls poorly.

And if you disagree with me -- you are a dirty, nasty liar, pants on fire.

Didn't played SMW aside from one first level.

A few years ago there were some vague news about official RCR sequel developed on WiiWare or something... I was excited about that and Retro City Rampage.

Retro City Rampage was eventually released after like five years of waiting and turned out kinda meh while that official game have vanished i guess.

3DS in Japan is still getting Kunio-kun games, both on VC and i think they even made a new one (?).

The story for me the first run left me scratching my head in a mass of confusion, so what I've done is read through game faqs, wiki, etc. on the history and in combination of beating it once and now knowing even more backstory the games really gelled perfectly.
Yes, story is quite incomprehensible. Watching game's director commentary helped to give it a bit more sense, but even after watching most of it it still doesn't quite feel complete. Thankfully Kamiya's next game (W101) has a much better plot.

After playing the Wonderful 101 demo three times I've noticed similar instances with what Platinum has done there too.
Yes, they're very, very similar. I even created a thread where i talk about comparison between two games.

Okay, my own update.

Injustice. Beat story mode, but probably spend a bit more time with it with missions and stuff.

Pacman Championship Edition DX
It took me a while to get into this game. But after i understood what i am supposed to do in each mode, i started enjoying the game a lot. Scoring system is kinda obtuse which is probably why getting into higher part of the leaderboard was rather easy -- not many people made sense of it i guess.

WarioWare: Twisted
I thought i beat this game a year ago! Apparently not. Recent NeoGaf discussion mentioned some "Mewtroid" mini game, so i checked that and it's not unlocked yet in my game. So now i want to get it, but the problem is i don't know which mission i still haven't beaten: none of them shows as new or as unfinished...
Still it was nice to play it once again. Such a great game.

Fluidity: Spin Cycle
Kinda forgot that i had on my 3DS. I never had with previous game, as with other Metroidvania-style games, i kept playing it no-stop until i beat it. The sequel lost interconnected world and i guess lost my long term interest. It's still a quality game though.

I was just gettting 5 stars on a few previous levels. Some of the levels are pretty hard to 5 star -- they're big and you need to do a lot of different actions towards final goal. And just one mistake and you can say your fifth star goodbye.

Ikaruga
Praised be Costa Rica, giver of free games!
I already have Gamecube version, but it's more convenient to have on Xbox (my wii is in other room connected to other TV). Of course, unbeatable price of nothing helps too.
Ikaruga... It's Ikaruga, man. Aspect ratio is a bit different but it's otherwise it's still the same game.
I probably should play it properly, constantly changing polarity and stuff and gathering chains, but i am just playing just as a regular shmup and still have fun. I don't think i ever got through past second level on any versions.

Injustice

Oh wow, story mode is so short in this game. I literally finished it in two sittings. I remember how Mortal Kombat's story mode took me more than a week to finish and it was the best single player mode in a fighting game i played.

In this game story mode is built very similarly but it's inferior to MK in many ways:

1) as i said ridiculously short, just not enough meat in there
2) story mode is divided in "chapters" where you play as one character for a few fights.  MK's chapters i remember being pretty long, there have been like seven or more fights for each character. Some chapters took me entire evenings to get through. Injustice's chapters have just four-five fights per character. That's just not nearly enough to learn all the moves and get the general feeling of a fighter. Just as you are getting it, nope -- the chapter has ended, here's a new character -- start all over again.
3) the other problem with chapters is that there is just not enough of them, so roster isn't represented fully in it and that'd be understandable, if not for the fact that you play as Batman during three chapters. Three chapters as Batman, while everyone else gets one and some characters aren't in story mode at all.

My favourite characters to fight with were Superman and Green Arrow. Many other character i simply didn't get. Flash was pretty fun but i had no idea what most of his moves do, so i just spammed throws and regular kicks. Also couldn't make sense of Wonder Woman's stance system. Couldn't understand how to fight with Lex Luthor properly.

Ah well, i still enjoyed it enough, and the price being zero Costa Rican colones makes it easy to ignore these flaws.

One of the two games you have on your channel is Bayonetta so you're pretty cool in my eyes.

So i just checked out first part of that.

First, your intro. It has RAGE and angry face on it, so that automatically guarantees i won't watch any of your other videos, because i hate this ****.

As to actual video:

+ good voice, no screaming and stuff and overall calm and collected manner despite what you're trying to say in intro
+ you don't show your face and add retarded intermissions with bad acting
+ you know when to stay silent, though it would help to fill the silence a bit and give a bit of a context and backstory to what's happening. First cutscenes in this game are seriously too long and way too confusing, i am saying this a huge fan of this game.

- use Dodge, like seriously. Even just spamming RT would help immensely.
- torture attacks don't prompt randomly, they become available when you gather all the orbs under your healthbar, note that you get orbs by being good at a game and lose orbs when you get hit
- there is no point to collect Halos by destroying everything on a level, a kill at the end of a good combo will give you much more Halos in much less time
- bad framerate and screen tearing in some places but it's not a huge issue for a let's play, so whatever

Overall: not half bad, but need to be actually good at the game to keep my attention. You have a good attitude and that's a gigantic improvement over majority of Let's Plays out there. So, i guess good luck to you.

Maybe it has to do with nostalgia. I've never played a FF game so none of the music means anything to mean.
So am i. But judging from my impressions from full Rhythm Thief game and demo of Theatrhythm, Square's game striked me as the more polished one. Unique art style, these non-sensical randomly generated text bubbles characters say - it's all very charming package. And even if i never played FF game, and don't know the story context for every track, i can still appreciate their quality.

Battery power is a bit less complicated, but it’s far more annoying. Under your health bar is your Unite Gauge. It depletes whenever you use the Wonder Liner, or activate a Unite Morph. The gauge recovers slowly over time, but you can also replenish it by collecting batteries or by using items. The issue with the Unite Gauge is that it always seems to run out at the most inopportune times, and without it, you can’t form Unite Morphs or use the Wonder Liner.
Hmm, unless you're constantly generating Multi Unite Morphs this shouldn't be happening. Or you're using one of unlocks that eat up a lot of unite gauge because they're so powerful, like the one that blocks automatically from all incoming attacks.

After a while i even stopped using Unite Charge unlock, thought it looks too useful not to use at first. When you're going for platinum, you don't really need a big weapon. Smaller one is might be even preferential because it will deal less damage and enemies will stay alive for longer giving you more time for more combo points.

Same how in Bayonetta you just couldn't use overpowered weapons to reach platinum marks -- they're killing enemies so effectively, you simply don't have time to accumulate big combo points.

Injustice: Entre nosotros hay dioses (thanks Costa Rica for a free game!)

The premise of the game was always a turn-off for me (almighty heroic Batman versus evil bad Superman, eugh). I also didn't liked demo on Xbox, combat system didn't made a lick of sense. But a free game is a free game, so i downloaded it.

Plot-wise it is your regular Kingdom Come + Brave New Metropolis (great episode from Superman: Animated series) + parallel universes stuff. Dialogues are full of references to comic book stuff. I really liked some one-liners after the battle was over in story mode. Green Arrow's chapter was especially good with that.

QTEs before some battles are okay, a little bit of variety to gameplay. I still don't know what to think about actual fighting. Most of the times i find myself on relying on one universal combo (back A, down Y to juggle the enemy) that works with everyone instead of trying to make sense of special moves and combos.

Speaking of combos, some are just ridiculous. I couldn't even do few last tutorial combos. Had to beat Supes for 15 minutes or so to execute X, X, back forward Y by some chance.

Because there is no no separate button for blocking, i never do. Just jumping away feels much simpler.

I got used to weird X Y A three button system but B button that switches stances or something feels useless.

I also have problems with executing "back forward" combos on a stick -- my character just jumps instead sometimes. It's probably something with me, because i have the same problem on all fighting games on all systems be it Street Fighter on 3DS or Tekken on Wii U.

Some of the special moves feel pointless, like Cyborg has two special moves with hookshot to jump away from an opponent. Why? What for?

Well at least story mode is still fun. DLC Advertisement in the beginning is annoying though.

Etrian Odyssey: 4 demo
Used one of the three tries, game is rather slow paced, so it took me three or four sessions to finish just the demo.
I really like the music in this game. The art style is also pretty charming, scantily dressed underaged girls or not. That smith girl is pretty adorable.
I was playing on casual and didn't had too many trouble, i still died two times when i got too cocky with FOEs but judging from the demo it looks pretty doable.

Overall i liked it. Might get the full game some later time.

Guadia Quest (DQ-like RPG in Retro Game Challenge DS)
It's cool how they included a full RPG in there. And it's not even the last game. It definitely feels like the JRPG from 80s with all menus and random encounters. Guadia system feels underdeveloped though, once you get your guadia, he just sits there in the slot and randomly attacks your enemies. Or not.

Oh and also some Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta, but really haven't much to say -- i was just going for the remaining achivements and collectibles in both.

I would actually preferred the same game with all DLCs on the cart rather than a completely new game. Because i'd be all over that. While brand new game with it's own set of DLCs is just an additional turnoff.

If we're comparing Theatrhythm and Rhythm Thief, i think i enjoyed Theatrhythm's demo more than a full game for Rhythm Thief.

Removing Wii Mode ghetto is my main complaint about the Wii U. Also make all wii, wiiware and VC games playable on a gamepad.

I spend significant time playing wii and wiiware titles on my Wii U. Adding all WiiWare and VC titles too Wii U properly would solve so many problems -- no need to bother with SD Card menu, no need to juggle fridge space and stuff. I have a few WiiWare games i really want to finish, but this barrier just kills all my excitement.

Oh and achievements. Personally i'm okay with games doing them on game per game basis, but system wide support would be nice.

Don't even try to argue "i, personally, don't need it". Don't. Just do it.

2094
If people have no idea and can't actually tell the difference why should they care.
You just don't understand. This is a matter of argument between two gentlemen:

But honestly, resolution doesn't really matter. I played games on my PC in 1600x1200 or something in 90s, and it was the same as playing in 800x600, only icons were smaller (consoles more than a decade later still can't match that). I also played a lot of Wii games in 480p and had the time of my gaming life.

Jaggies do bother me just like everyone else (one of the reasons i haven't started Xenoblade despite owning it for more than a year), but i'm not gonna cry myself to sleep over it. Great gameplay trumps everything every time for me, so jaggies or not ExciteTruck is still fun as hell.

One of the best games available on Wii U.

Mixing puzzle/metroidvania genres worked wonders, i played it obsessively a for a few weeks until i found everything.

General Chat / Re: Nintendo Free Radio 22: Extra-Large Double Double

On Wonderful 101:

The camera indeed can be zoomed in and out how you like and will stay that way. Coloured circle on the ground right under your leader will help you to find where he is in the crowd. Only leader matters, so you really only has to care about your leader while everyone else are expendable.

Game appears hectic and chaotic only at first, but actually you really have to focus only on 3-4 objects on the screen at all times: your leader (who is highlighted), two-three enemies and general environment with your and enemy littles dudes scattered around.

You can cancel attack animation by hitting Y. Or any other animation really.

Game doesn't mess up your block timings. First of all, turning into a jello pudding takes some time, something like a quarter of a second, so you have to block a bit in advance. Secondly, pudding doesn't stay up for long and falls apart after a while. Thirdly, some (if not most) attack animations have different variants and timings to them.

There are times when enemy will fake you out,  will do the motion but won't follow it through, and THEN a second later will hit you when your pudding felt apart . Countering this behavior is pretty easy actually, if first pudding didn't connect, do a second one. Or even easier -- just dodge. Dodge is instantaneous and provides 100% reliable getaway at all times.

Picture in picture mode is a bit of hassle but not a big issue i think. Definitely a less issue than in Pikmin 3, where you're forced to keep gamepad near you because you need to press buttons on it, even you're controlling the game with wiimote and nunchuck. While W101 allows you to play with your Pro Controller or Wii Classic Controller just fine.

Game even understands when you launch it with a Classic Controller and you don't have to switch options -- it just works. I am not sure if that was in demo, but it's like that in full game.

Recruiting enemies mechanic isn't depended on timing. Circling enemies around works differently in two cases:
  • when enemy is shocked (stars around his head), then your guys will lift him and throw him, inflicting massive damage for some reason
  • when enemy is done and is just about to die, he will go into that "self destruct state", when his body will start shining with purple light for a second or so and then he explodes. You need to circle the enemy during that state, THEN they will change sides.
Though maybe this works differently in easy mode and you can indeed recruit enemies without reducing their health to zero.

About tutorials: game actually has lots of tutorials. They appear one time in designated areas to help you out with the new mechanics. All the basic mechanics are are described there. After appearing in your corner, they will go into Help section on gamepad, so if you want to you can read previous tutorials. Tutorial are super short -- usually just a picture and a few words. The problem of course is that no one ever bother to check even that.

They are TOO unobtrusive and respect the player too much, assume too much of him. That's the very same people who will bitch about hand-holding tutorials killing all enjoyment in few cherry picked Nintendo games, and then they go and get lost completely in a game that doesn't throw hundred tutorials into their face for the first hour or so.

DuckTales:

Yeah, that last sequence after the last boss... I spent more time trying to get though it (and the one that comes after it) than in all other levels.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Music for the game is made by a freelance composer, Yoko Shimomura, Mario&Luigi series is the only thing she does for Nintendo. Most of her her work is for Square.

On TV segment:

What's with the fan-made trailers with Inception music for every show?

Breaking Bad is one of the best shows ever made. Almost as good Avatar for me. Even if the ending will suck, journey will be well worth it. I hate, HATE bad endings and "making the plot as they go along" types of shows, but Breaking Bad is probably worth risking having a half-baked ending.

Speaking of fan-made trailers, here is a very nice one for BB: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyIbLKKcKgQ

On demo limits

Funny how you started talking about it right when i booted up demo for EOIV and saw that three uses counter.

Oh and The Wonderful 101 demo has 15 uses in Europe not 10. Which sucks either way, of course. I basically had my Wii U running 24/7 on this demo first two-three days, because i didn't want to use too much uses for it.

In the end i ended up with 20 hours 55 minutes spread across three demo uses (i have 64 hours 50 minutes in a full game by the way).

I really have no idea what are people are talking about when they say DS games on 3DS look horrible. I have both systems and play DS games on both interchangeably and see no difference.

If you're looking for the "it" game for Wii U, it's already out: it's Wonderful 101. People who said Bayonetta was their favorite games of the last generation are now crowning W101 as an even better game. And i agree -- some sequences in this game are easily on par with Super Mario Galaxy games and ever surpass them.

Of course the audience for this kinda of game is rather small, but so is Metroid's.

As i mentioned many times, Bayonetta was one of the games i bought Xbox360 for. And when i actually started playing it, i loved so much if i had Bayonetta as my only xbox game, it would still 100% justify my purchase.

And Platinum Games are now doing the same for Wii U for other people. There are people who begrudgingly say they're gonna buy Wii U just for two upcoming games for PG alone. Of course there are other people who refuse to budge because hate Nintendo more than they love Platinum Games, but it's really their own loss in gaming (and in life, really).

W101+Bayo 2 is a one two punch right into the heart of action game lover.

Way faster. Using the thumbstick limits me to the speed the game lines up the characters while using the touch pad gathers members with the same speed I draw.

I may change my tune with the full game but unless the new guys change things drastically I doubt it.
One of the unlocks you can buy in full game is ability to draw figure faster, but i think it will apply to touch controls and right stick controls alike, so that won't be an advantage to you.

Well, either way i'm glad glad you're enjoying the demo and looking forward for full game.

How fast "fast" we're talking about? You can do a sword with a stick in a fraction of a second.
