Nintendo Gaming / Re: Game Pad Screen Scratches
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:05:38 AM »
After that original 3DS scratches thing, i've applied screen protectors on both mine 3DS XL and a Gamepad.

The problem with protector is that it gets scratches of it's own. When i look on lower screen protector on 3ds xl and on gamepad screen i can totally see traces of my previous miiverse posts.

I'm guessing this is fixable by simply removing them and applying new ones.

Didn't they Wii Fit U trial starts on 1st? I guess they're gonna talk about that.

And it's about damn time they show some progress on Mario and Wii Party.

Also i'm betting my non existing farm that they're gonna reveal some random eShop game like they occasionally do. We didn't had those in a while, and to think we had them coming up randomly for every Direct.

You can remove armour from the robot faster simply using a bigger whip. There is also special states where robot becomes especially vulnerable -- this works for all enemies.

I never encountered the problem with multi unite failing because i don't have the specific character, because:
1) i'm not a big multi unite user, it eats way too much gauge to be useful outside of very special uses
2) when i am using multi unite i am usually picking different weapon for multi because that way i can combine effects of the multiple weapons instead of just going two swords that simple multiplies damage
3) game places characters is such a way that when you're introduced to the a new main Wonderful one in the beginning of a operation, during this operation you're basically gonna be swamped with more and more heroes all wielding the same weapon you just got. That happens until you have full set about half way into the game.

Sword is not powerful at all. It's one the weaker ones even. It does have a very useful area attack and is extremely easy to draw which help for spamming multi unite morphs when you just want to dispense ridiculous damage in extremely short amount of time which kills your gauge but gets the job done. Fist and Hammer are the most powerful. Fist is especially versatile because hammer is too slow.

Many people don't like that level where you're limited with only your main crew. What they've missed is that the first encounter gives you a possibility to replenish your forces by stealing little enemy dudes that robots keep summoning. You just need to wait and not kill them for a while until they transport enough little dudes and then you start hitting and recruiting them for yourself. They totally mean for you to do that, because time limit for pure platinum for this mission is very lax -- it's about three times longer than you usually get to finish just two middle sized robots.

I usually get my group to at least 20 or so guys and that is more than enough to get through and even do some odd multi unite here and there.

Gun is very useful for getting platinum and pure platinum ranks because as long as you're shooting your combo stays and it increases your multiplier. Also most bosses are vulnerable to regular weapon only at certain times, in all other times you're supposed to keep shooting them -- this way you keep damaging them non-stop. Their range is basically unlimited so at times they're the only weapon that is available.

After playing W101 for 80+ hours i find the most useless weapon to be... whip. Outside of it special ability to remove spikes it's pretty much jack of all trades, master of none. It's overmatched by gun and sword in range, and way overmatched by fist and hammer by damage. It feels like they HAD to introduce spikes mechanic simply to justify using the whip.

About the maglev stage: it had two tutorial screens prefacing it, one to explain controls and second one to show them that they CAN and should use Unite Morphs to counter attack enemies during this segment. If Brad and Vinny didn't figure out you can simply shoot the enemies and their rockets, well... And you're allowed to take a lot of damage during this, most of it goes to ship's own damage bar. The game has an achievement for doing no-damage run on this section and it's quite tricky to do, but it's completely doable.

Ahaha, i spent 40 minutes trying to get through that stadium vestibule first time.

Had the same issue since saturday morning. It's definitely Google's doing, they changed something that broke Wii U browser.

Deleting cookies won't help. Nor ports “advice” (you can rely on EA for giving incredibly bad advices like opening ALL you ports for everyone).

I even downloaded and tried Youtube official app, but it also works randomly. At least it doesn't crash...

I guess google people become irritated that Wii U had the superior Youtube experience and decided to ruin watching their videos on Wii U as well, like they did on PC. Do no evil, my ass.

Legend of Korra: Civil War part II
Even i now have to admit that this is pretty inedaquate.
Part I had plot A with water tribe civil war and plot B with stupid fifty year olds bickering about the stuff long gone.
This time both halfs were pretty retarded. Plot A had the most obvious villain revelaiton and the most stupid investigation i've seen in while. Plot B had the most heavyhanded message for underschoolers that you shouldn't fight with your sibling. Felt like something even Nick jr would have rejected.

Beware the Batman: Control
Second very strong episode (first one would be the one with Magpie). I could be an easy target but i just enjoyed all that cheezy «awkward nerd romancing kungfu chick» with Jason.
Villain was pretty decent and creepy too, i guess .

Beware the Batman: Sacrifice
Aand we're back to 'Meh'.  That Anarky person isn't interesting at all. Nor is lady Shiva.

Viewtiful Joe
I ordered GC version about the same time i started playing W101. I finally received it this morning.

Only managed to beat first boss. That helicopter gave me quite a beating. At the start VFX meter isn't very big, so i didn't have enough slo–mo to dodge through its bullets.

You definitely can see the foundations for later Platinum Games stuff in here: timing based dodge mechanics, shop for upgrades, combos and rankings for each enemy encounter.

I also tried Devolution on Wii U with this game and it works great. But i will still probably keep playing it on Wii, because Gamecube controller feels slightly better for this game (if only GC had workable d-pad then it'd be perfect).

Beat City
What a weird game. First minute i started the game i had no idea what's going on. It was like, cutscene then loading screen (loading in DS game?!..), then another cutscene, then another loading, then another cutscene. What was that?..

Actual game, once you finally get to it, is a Rhythm Heaven clone. Music isn't as catchy, it's just rather generic electronic beats.
Instead of of showing us some animation to go along with song, Beat City shows pulse-like line like in more traditional rhythm games.

lt's a poor man's Rhythm Heaven, but it's more than fine by me, considering i did get it on poor man's price new.

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Trying to beat level 2 on 9th (hardest) difficulty. «Nothing harder» is right. You need to pick your gear and upgrades very meticulously, if you want to get through.

Flying section is the easiest part - spheres will help to get through the most spammy sections where you get about five or so enemies at the same time and at this difficulty even the weakest eyeball-like enemy emits up to five bullets.
The hardest sections are the fight when you meet Magnus and after that - boss battle with Gaol. My latest strategy is to use Trade-off ability when you sacrifice all your health toward increased attack and speed right before the boss. Then i restore all my health back with drink of the gods that is always there right before the boss room and still have a few minutes with upgraded stats.

Wonderful 101
Achievement hunt! Did the one where i had to do no damage run on maglev section. It had one neat gotcha moment, where right after cutscene ends, a rocket is flying right at you and you need to react in a fraction of second. Last part of maglev segment is especially overwhelming with all rocket spam you need to avoid while reflecting occasional laser beams.
The other achievement was kinda BS. I understood from the name that it's something to do with rides on 2–B. What i didn't get was that i am supposed to enter last after all my team on both rides. Fidgety Unite Build also doesn't help.

There is a Donkey Kong 3? I didn't know there was a 2!
I'm gonna blow your mind now: not only they made DK 3, but they also did DK 94, and it's also the best game in the series. Yes, including Country series.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What can Wonderful 101 learn from Bayonetta?
« on: September 27, 2013, 02:55:38 AM »
Still collecting more thoughts about to talk about plot, atmosphere and themes of W101, but this morning i had a few small revelations about the game that i want to share.

Both Bayonetta and W101 have that special fantastical element that empowers otherwise regular-sized individuals into threats capable of killing gods and conquering entire galaxies.

With Bayo it's her hair magic, with it she summons different demons and can summon huge fists and foots to harm enemies from afar.

In Wonderful 101, it's Unite Morph ability which can be used to create fists and swords and guns and whatever to harm enemies and generally do whatever.

But on top of that, W101 also adds yet another gameplay theme that comes from the platform it's on. All gamepad interactions in this game revolve around the idea of "inside and outside".

You enter some building (inside) and solve a puzzle in there while looking at the TV (outside). You enter some vehicle and start controlling it from inside by pushing actual in-game buttons and notches. You look at the TV to see how's your vehicle faring, and it's fine and dandy, but wait!.. Some enemy just broke into the control cabin, so now you're fighting him inside on the gamepad AND trying to control the ship who is also attacked from outside!

And the final level wonderfully combines both ideas of going inside to control huge thing AND empowering yourself with Unite Morphs. The scale instantly multiplies to hundreds and you realize that the bosses you thought were gigantic in the first levels are now of the same size that your mooks.

You get huge boost of adrenaline feeling yourself massively upgraded both in physical size and sheer power... until you face the final boss who is literally planet sized. And then you get an even bigger kick because you realize you're about to take down THAT.

And story that prepares you perfectly for that one culminating moment, when you're lying on the floor in the pool of your tears and in the fit of laughter and giving it all your 101% to...

I am not even asking to update the game to two editions that have come since.

But could you please fix touch controls a bit? Namely add cooldown for touchscreen combos that require delay like Sonic Boom or Honda's head thrust?

Still a great game. The best online on 3DS, i played along with Kid Icarus.

Also i'm pretty sure you can get the game in retail for twice as less than this eShop price.

2014
I actually wouldn't mind getting Azeke on the show to defend the game as well. Schedules haven't synced up that way so far, but sometime in the near future you never know.
Just saying, i don't like the thought that this game needs defending. It implies the feeling that this is a inherently flawed game that fell short of the expectations and didn't do what it's creators wanted to do, which is as far from truth as one can be.

Sure, that game isn't perfect and there are quite a few glitches here and there, but no one after beating it can say it didn't realized it's potential and then went way beyond it to join the likes of SMG and Bayonetta in the pantheon of the greatest games ever made.

But sure, i'm up to talk about this or other games i played. Just make sure to contact me about times beforehand, i can devote one sleepless saturday night for this with no problems. I often stay up to 3am even on weekdays anyways.

About the camera, during some sections, the camera cannot be manually zoomed in/zoomed out.
If it's about inside sections, holding L fixes camera behind the leader.

These sections can sometimes be zoomed out too far (particularly during some boss battles), making seeing your attackers and evading correctly quite challenging
There is no zoomed out too far in this game. You have to see as much of the area as possible to prevent enemies attacking you off screen. Also positioning yourself right helps with that too.

According to my latest medical examination my eyesight is so poor i can't drive. But i can deal with W101 just fine playing it across the room on my bed.

When zoomed out, you need to look for coloured circle under your leader to see where you are. Also when you're running, your leader leaves a rainbow stripe after him. More so, when your combo meter goes high enough, coloured flame appear over your leader's head. These are the cues you need to look for.

Apart from visual cues, game makes sure to make all enemies quite noisy. All enemies make very distinct sounds for every type of attack they do.

I remember a boss where you actually needed to have 100 heroes to fill in a circle on a boss to control it. However, I don't believe there was a place where the game told you this, so many were stuck here, filling up the hole and not realizing why nothing was happening.
What annoyed me in the filling area of the game is I found toilets I couldn't fill.
Both is these issues are actually about finnicky Unite Build. In the first case, you actually don't need 100 heroes to fill the eyesocket. You just need to get ALL characters in. Including yourself. So you have to move around a bit to get him in too. Sometimes you will be missing one or two stray heroes from you crowd who will just run around instead going inside, again -- move around, jump to get them in.

General Gaming / Re: Valve announces SteamOS
« on: September 26, 2013, 09:59:56 PM »
I would not be surprised that in Conjunction to SteamOS that Valve has been working to wrap all the Windows API calls, probably starting with WINE and going from their, so that a Windows game will just sort of Run on Steam OS.
It's honestly easier to just rewrite games than trying to replicate all quirks of WinAPI. And WinAPI isn't even the biggest hurdle there actually. The biggest problem are drivers.

HINT: all MiiVerse pictures i post (in this thread and before that) are actually links. I wonder what happens when you click on them? Hmm...

Look at this:

I'm not trying to insult anyone, but really? Really? REALLY?

Instructions are right there: "draw a longer whip to grab from afar." What does he/she do?

Draws miniscule whip and tries to grab up close.

Seriously?

Then another example:

Poster asks what is he supposed to do there. Gee, i wonder... Audience, can you give him a hint?

Now here is a big and a very important one. This is a screen you get right after you finish prologue:

The very first line says: "before heading to battle head to Wonderful Mart...". What do people actually do?

They ignore it completely. And then don't get Guts and then wonder how are they supposed to beat tanks.

What's the first thing we see if we go to Wonderful Mart?

See those marks? They want to show you that these upgrades are absolutely essential. Playing the game without them is the same as playing football without legs.

Game gets lots of complaints about "broken" camera. Here is the tutorial that they missed:

Basically they are supposed to keep the game zoomed out at all times with L button. But they don't do that.

This is perfect example:

Camera is zoomed in and poster doesn't have any idea of what Guts is.

And look at this:

Tutorial showing you how to lift things. Looks pretty straightforward.

But then you get people who get lost 10 minutes later on this level when they're supposed to pick football helmet:

When i asked another person with the same problem where was he during lifting tutorial part, he said that he simply blew up the truck killing all guys under it and skipped lifting completely.

Game gives you a freedom to ignore the message and people of course pick not to learn.

Also here is this boss sequence:

Poster already destroyed three bubbles on his arm, and now, kids, do you see what he is missing? The game even tries to show him the way, but nope, let's keep doing what he's been doing for the last 15 minutes without any results.

Lots of people gets stuck on these (i usually see at least few similar questions every time i open miiverse):

Or here:

But these are pretty legit questions.

And one miiverse thread i find to be rather interesting, and even touching in sense how eager to help guys who responded were:

Also, that guy has the prettiest handwriting i ever seen.
