TalkBack / Re: My Thoughts on the Latest 3DS Nintendo Direct
« on: April 21, 2013, 09:29:15 PM »
For being what you thought was a Nintendo Direct that was nothing short of spectacular, I find it surprising that almost everything you talked about was something you didn't care for, or had some complaints about.  I too thought it was a great presentation though.

For a Nintendo Direct we got a ton of news. That is why it was spectacular. Also, there is a ton of potential here for many of the games the Direct mentioned. I just explained why I may be someone unsure about some parts of the announcements. The truth is I'm excited to buy/play almost everything mentioned during this presentation.

TalkBack / My Thoughts on the Latest 3DS Nintendo Direct
« on: April 21, 2013, 07:31:20 PM »

I'm still in shock.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/33962

Last Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct was nothing short of spectacular. I’ve had a few days to let the news sink in and I figured I’d share a brief thought on each piece of news that was delivered.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - I’m a big fan of the series and I’m really looking forward to playing through this one. I don’t know why North America is getting it later than the rest of the world. NOA just doesn’t seem to want to release games in July most of the time.

Special Luigi 3DS XL Hardware - This new hardware unit looks beautiful. I really hope Nintendo of America brings this one overseas. If you’re interested in this unit, I wouldn’t worry about North America missing it yet. NOA seems to announce special 3DS hardware units closer to launch. Since this unit coincides with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, I’d bet we will hear more about it sometime in July.

Mario Golf: World Tour Mario Golf is my favorite Mario sports series. That being said, I thought Toadstool Tour was a dud. I’m hoping World Tour is a return to form. The newly announced online features sound great and have me reminiscing about the time I spent entering codes online to compete in Mario Golf (N64) tournaments at Camp Hyrule. Sadly, this game doesn’t appear to have the RPG elements that past portable entries in the series have had, but that didn’t stop other versions from being fun, so I’m not too worried.

Mario Party 3DS I’m just about partied out. If Nintendo finally decides to give this series an online mode, I’d be much more excited.

New Super Luigi U It looks great, but how is multiplayer going to work, if at all? I never really liked controlling the slippery Luigi, but if I have no choice, I’m up for the challenge. I think the 100-second time limit may cause some players to second guess purchasing this content, but I grew up playing some of the hardest games ever, so I’m not concerned for myself. I just hope Nintendo doesn’t include new Challenge Mode stages, since I’ve spent way too much time on the originals.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D The new items and easy mode don’t interest me in the slightest. The Wii game wasn’t that hard on “Normal” in the first place. I’m happy about the eight new levels; I just hope they are challenging enough to be worth it. Otherwise, I may be let down.

Yoshi’s Island 3DS I want to be excited for this game. I really do. However, the poor quality of Yoshi’s Island DS leaves me very skeptical. Knowing who’s actually developing the title would probably help me come to a conclusion. Unfortunately, only time will tell on this one.

Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move I’m getting a little tired of the Minis at this point. We’ve seen them in three previous games. Fortunately, this is taking the series in a completely different direction. I would, however, like to see a direct sequel to the first Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Wii U System Update About time!

Wii U Virtual Console I’m still not pleased that users are supposed to “upgrade” their software for a fee if they bought a title on the Wii. This is also a problem for people I know that don’t want to transfer their Wii stuff to the Wii U, since they will no longer be able to use GameCube controllers on their save files for games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Nintendo should allow gamers to pick and choose what moves from their Wii to Wii U so if they want to “upgrade” their software, they can do so with no negatives.

Panorama View Does Nintendo of America really think people are going to buy different videos for this? I doubt many people will.

Pikmin 3 August 4? It’s like Metroid Prime 3 all over again. Regardless, I want this game badly.

EarthBound Nintendo, I don’t know what took you so long. Bring us the other two entries of the series while you’re at it. PLEASE!

Game & Wario I’m glad this game finally has a North American release date. Unfortunately, I thought the title was a dud when I played it at E3 last year and the few reviews I’ve read, written by those that have played the Japanese version, aren’t doing anything to get my hopes up.

Animal Crossing New Leaf 3DS XL Hardware It looks great and will be a great deal for many people. Nice job, Nintendo.

Zelda Oracle Games I still have my original copies of the games, so I’m not nearly as excited as others. On top of that, I think these games are somewhat overrated by many Zelda fans. I know many people didn’t play them so I’m looking forward to see what others think.

Bravely Default At this time I have absolutely no interest in this title.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy I love the Layton series and I’m eagerly awaiting the conclusion to the series. Why must I wait until 2014 Nintendo? Why?

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 A sequel to my favorite Zelda game? YES! I’m extremely excited for this one. The sound effects in the trailer have already invoked feelings of nostalgia in me that few games in recent memory have. My only minor complaint is that I’m not yet sold on the new transformation into a drawing gimmick. However, that could easily change if I experience some clever uses of the mechanic.

-

Overall, Nintendo had a great Nintendo Direct showing that has, no doubt, laid the groundwork for what we can expect to see at E3 in only a few short weeks. The company has proven that the future of the 3DS is indeed bright. Now I hope they have the ability to do the same for the Wii U in a timely manner.

The staff of NWR play matchmaker with the characters of Fire Emblem Awakening.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/33828

Love is many things; it can be beautiful, destructive, courageous. It exists in many forms, so it only makes sense to throw it into video games. While Fire Emblem Awakening certainly caught some off guard with its quality and craftsmanship, none of us figured we'd take on the role of matchmaker so seriously. The hearts may be digital, but many of us took our duties responsibly. Until the inevitable sequel allows us to craft prenups, we chose to make our relationships work, taking careful consideration of a character's behaviours and tics. Below are our staff's pairings; we may not all agree on who should wed whom, but there's no denying that love is in the air.

Tyler's Pairings:

Robin (Avatar) & Chrom - I still can't understand not marrying these two. What doesn't make sense about a magic-wielding amnesiac and a royal with naked photos of himself drifting about the campsite? A lot of the game's emotional hooks get stuck in your gut when you put these two together, making the story that much better.

Frederick & Miriel - Poor Frederick. He's been the royal family's whipping boy for so long, he forgot to take care of himself. Who better to commiserate with than a witch who thinks she's smarter than anyone? Well, there's one thing the Necronomicon can't teach, and that's love. Best of luck, you two!

Vaike & Nowi - All right, I got a little unintentionally creepy with this one. Vaike is the teacher type; he holds his age and expertise over everyone else's heads. So I thought, well, Nowi is a thousand-year-old dragon lady, I'm sure she can teach him a thing or two. Her childlike behaviour made things get weird... fast. Doubly so when Vaike makes her call him "teach."

Virion & Miriel - It wasn't long before I grew tired of Virion's tales of grandeur; it all boiled down to male chauvinism. I wanted to see how he'd handle a real woman. Well, half woman, half beast. Anyways, he wined and dined her, showed her the real Virion. She saw humans as inferior, but as love blossomed on the battle field, Miriel realized humans weren't all that bad—just the ones that whipped out her entire species.

Neal's Pairings:

Neal (Avatar) & Anna – I was curious how my straight-laced strategist would deal with a wily, money-hungry shopkeeper. Both seemed to keep the other one in line, and on the battlefield, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Chrom & Sully – Early on, Chrom was a bad ass. He never really relented, but after the marriage to Sully, he took a backseat whenever the paired-up couple roamed the fields of war. Sully was probably my most devastating warrior near the end of the game, and Chrom was just along for the ride.

Ricken & Nowi – This was my first planned pairing (Chrom and Sully just happened without me totally wanting it to), and while I think Ricken falls off a useful cliff late in the game, I loved them early on. Ricken is a dreamer, and Nowi is his dream, an old dragon who looks like a 10-year-old girl. That's super dirty, but they were happy until the end, dammit.

Vaike & Lissa – Teach totally got it on with Chrom's sister. Seriously, that was my entire intention for this one. I almost paired up the avatar with Lissa for a similar reason, but Lissa and Vaike made more sense to me. They were a couple that worked on the battlefield, too, as Lissa healed and performed magic while Vaike took his ax-battling to the melee.

Virion & Maribelle - I really never used Maribelle. Virion just wound up being hosed out of my original pairing for him (Sully) and I wanted my adulterous archer to wind up with someone. But let's get real: Virion boned everybody, even the dudes.

Donnel & Olivia – Donnel is like that guy who is super gawky and awkward but somehow winds up with the hottest girl.

Lon'qu & Panne – Both these fighters are relatively monosyllabic, so it just made sense. I married them and rescued their kid. Then I never used them again. But Lon'qu was a menace early on.

Henry & Cherche – Henry's dialogue always made me laugh, and I started shying away from Sumia's pegasus ways. Cherche was fun to use, as I never really used a wyvern in previous Fire Emblem games. This couple worked because Henry made Cherche laugh, I always assumed. I mean, he has to do something right...

Owain & Morgan – This pairing probably pissed off Morgan's father, the avatar, but delighted her mother Anna. Sometimes, my aspirations aren't any more than that.

Josh's Pairings:

Chrom & Sully - A prince and his childhood friend. The fearless leader and his ever-faithful knight. I'll be honest, I started this pairing just because I saw it as a gender reversal of the whole "knight in shining armor" story. Sully has been a Paladin and Great Knight in this run and can take anything thrown at her. As Chrom charges into battle, he'll always have his knight in shining armor covering his back.

Protagonist & Anna - Money is everything! Or is it? Is the protagonist's love worth more than money to the frugal merchant? You bet your sweet bippy. (That's right I said it.) ... ... ... All right, I just wanted to see what would happen. Happy now?!

Henry & Miriel - Two magically gifted individuals. Both EXTREMELY socially awkward. When the dark humorist Henry and knowledge-hungry Miriel get together, the two realize there's something they both strive to do: create life. Though not through the way they originally intentioned, they did just that. And their kid is insanely powerful.

Cherche & Vaike - I don't know what it is about these two, but they really are wonderful together. From the moment Vaike and Minerva hit it off, Cherche knew it was love! ... or something. When the two axe-wielding powerhouses entered the battlefield together, nothing could get between them and their love. And if something, tried either Minerva or Vaike's axe-arm would take care of it.

Kellam & Olivia - What do you get when you put an invisible man and a shy dancer together? An adorable situation. Olivia is seeking ways to be important and needed, and Kellum is more than happy to help her find what it is. Through Kellam's invisible encouragement, Olivia finds a way to help those around her, and not just through dancing. And even though pies are used far too often in support conversations, I still found this whole thing adorable.

Donnel & Nowi - Would you believe me if I said childhood romances during war time just makes sense? Even though one of the "children" is a thousand years old. And is a dragon. And the other is an actual kid. ... OK, yeah. It's weird.

Lon'qu & Tharja - Lon'qu is a man with a dark past and Tharja is a woman who loves everything dark. When Lon'qu started looking for a way to remove that part of his life from his memory, he found having those memories is the reason he is who he is today. And maybe, just maybe, Tharja can help him realize that the past is behind him and the future is all that matters. Or not. Maybe she'll just mess with Lon'qu and Noire with every new hex she finds. Either way, I'm happy.

Justin's Pairings:

Chrom & Sumia - From the start, I could tell Sumia had a thing for Chrom. Even though Sumia appeared a little clumsy, Chrom was there offering his support. Their love blossomed over time.

Justin (Avatar) & Tharja - Tharja kept telling others how she had feelings for Justin. Wanting to know more about this darker character, Justin decided to pursue the relationship further. According to the information given at the end of the game, he loved her very much for the rest of his days. (Side note: A Tharja Figma will be released in the near future, and who wouldn't want a figure of their wife? Don't let my girlfriend know.)

Donnel & Lissa - The two characters got along very well even though they were from vastly different backgrounds. Lissa always had a sense of adventure even though she was of royal upbringing. Having the chance to live a much different life with Donnel let her explore different aspects of the world.

Vaike & Miriel - Miriel once picked up an axe that Vaike left on the battlefield, helping him greatly. Vaike is a strong individual, but isn't the smartest guy around. Miriel, on the other hand, is very intellectual. Combined, they make up for the weaknesses of one another. Sometimes opposites attract.

Lon'qu & Sully - Lon'qu has had a problem talking with women. Sully, on the other hand, is one of the toughest women around and isn't afraid to stand up for herself. It took a woman as strong as Sully to get Lon'qu to come around. Together, they seemed perfect for one another because they both strive to become combat experts.

Fredrick & Cordelia - Both of these individuals have a strong love for their country. It was this love of nation that brought them together.

Kellam & Nowi - Kellem went relatively unnoticed in the army but caught the eye of Nowi. Kellam viewed Nowi as an older sister, but eventually his love for her grew until they ended up together.

Virion & Cherche - Having known one another for a long time, and being from the same place, ultimately led to love.

Ricken & Maribelle - Childhood friends that grew close.

Stahl & Olivia - Olivia was extremely shy, but Stahl found a way to her heart by playing the game her way.

Gaius & Panne - Gaius liked Panne because she was able to smell out some of the best sweets in the land. Ultimately, this increased Gaius' interest in the Taguel race, causing their love grew over time.

Inigo & Morgan - Inigo would flirt with all the women, but Morgan appeared to be one of his most trusted friends. This eventually led to their relationship.

Kjelle & Gerome - Both characters loved to train. This made them want to outdo each other in combat. After working against one another for a long time, they decided to work with each other. Their love grew from there.

Owain & Noire - These characters each had a crazy side. This led to them understanding each other in a way none of the others could.

Yarne & Lucina - Lucina noticed that Yarne appeared to be a little weak on the battlefield and decided to keep an eye on him to keep him safe. Over time, Yarne grew strong thanks to Lucina's support, and they decided to get married.

Laurent & Nah - Both seemed somewhat intellectual, and that is what brought them together.

Cynthia & Brady - Brady wasn't the best-looking guy and kept his feelings for Cynthia quiet for a while. He was doing things to protect her on the battlefield, and ultimately it seemed like the perfect match.

TalkBack / Gunman Clive: Review Revisit
« on: April 05, 2013, 10:55:04 AM »

We weigh in on the January release as a group.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/33757

When Gunman Clive launched on the 3DS eShop in January, word spread like wildfire about this $2 eShop title that was actually GOOD. The game was quickly praised on podcasts, and reviewed positively. Our own Tyler Ohlew gave the game a 9 out of 10 when he reviewed it, saying that "[Gunman] Clive is a successful attempt at continuing a genre we don't see much of anymore, a genre with which other developers often focus on tickling our 8-bit fancies instead of capitalizing on what's really important."

In the end, most of us at NWR really enjoyed the game, but we thought we'd take a more scientific approach and ask everyone who played it to write a one-paragraph review and assign the score they would have given below. The result is our first (of hopefully many!) Review Revisits, where we take a recently released game and put it through its paces with multiple opinions.

If you have a game you'd like to see in the Review Revisit hot seat, drop us a note in the talkback thread!

Review from Neal Ronaghan, Site Director

Gunman Clive was a breath of fresh air, and easily the best full-priced $2 game I've ever bought on a Nintendo platform. The art style was immeadiately captivating, and the callbacks to the Mega Man series made me smile, especially since it was anachronistically not related to Mega Man at all. The charm is what ultimately made me crazy about the game, though, especially when I realized you could play as the captured female at the start, and also play as a humorous unlockable character after you beat it.

Review from Nicholas Bray, Australian Correspondant

This is a game where the presentation, gameplay and overall polish, come together to help make one of the best titles on the eShop. Taking design tips and ideas from old-school platformers such as Mega Man, the running, shooting and some satisfying boss encounters help make this a memorable experience. Although short, the level design and aesthetics more than make up for it.

Review from Guillaume Veillette, Radio Free Nintendo Editor

The game has all the right influences and is executed well enough to make it a hit with fans of NES action games. The low price makes its brevity much more palatable and easier to recommend. You can buy it along with, not instead of, some of the meatier action games on the eShop service, such as Mutant Mudds or Cave Story!

Review from J.P. Corbran, Community Manager

Gunman Clive is exactly the kind of thing I want to see on the eShop: a small, focused, really polished game. Taking the best elements of old-school action platformers like Mega Man, it creates a short but very fun series of levels. While the campaign doesn't last very long, it provides a good variety of gameplay ideas that keep it feeling fresh the whole way through. This is a must-buy game for any platformer fan, especially at that price.

Review from Dave Mellert, Contributing Editor

This is one of those examples of a game that won me over by its price as much as its actual content. Packed with two to three hours of straightforward, gorgeous, run-and-gun platforming, it is certainly a better use of your $2 than a latte. And those graphics! I would have paid a buck just to check out the 3D art - Gunman Clive makes a very impressive use of the 3DS's main feature. I think this game is a no-brainer for anyone with a 3DS.

Review from Justin Berube, Staff Writer

A platforming game with shooting elements, Gunman Clive is almost like a Mega Man and Contra hybrid, but sadly doesn't excel in either area. That said, the title is still a fun game while it lasts, which is approximately 30 minutes. The game's short length may seem like a problem, however it isn't so bad since the title only costs $2. What really makes Gunman Clive worth it is its unique hand drawn looking art style which is something I'll remember for a long time.

Review from Zack Kaplan, Staff Writer

Gunman Clive is a good illustration of what makes a quality eShop title. Appealing visuals, fun platforming action, and some catchy music make up for a very short but enjoyable experience  The game's length is its downfall, even at the low price point the game ends too soon. I personally finished it in an hour. Still, it is still a great trip through the wild west.

Review from James Jones, Senior Editor

As visually arresting as it is, Gunman Clive's style cannot counter what are a handful of very noticeable issues that detract from an otherwise enjoyable experience. Besides its almost comical lack of length, the action feels very slow when compared to similar titles, the power-ups feel incongruous with the current challenge, and the fact each enemy encounter is a "one-on-one" experience prevents the game from offering for true difficulty scaling. The building blocks for a really good game are here, but compared to other run-and-gun games its patterned after the game feels as empty as the ink pen visuals.

Review from David Egolf, Programmer

With great graphics, a fun little story, and some wonderful music, Gunman Clive is certainly one of those games that is worth playing at least once. While keeping controls simple, it manages to provide the right amount of challenge that doesn't get tiresome quickly. This game does end up on the shorter end of the scale, however that's not entirely to it's detriment. After a few playthroughs, it becomes a time trial (while trying to minimize deaths,) perfect for when you have a few minutes to kill before an appointment.

I think all the Mario vs. DK games let you make your own levels except the original version. I have read that there is a level editor in the code, but it wasn't finished in time or something.

Multiple new 3DS eShop titles were announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation.

A new entry in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series was shown, called Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. This title differs from previous entries in the series, as the gameplay now takes place in full 3D. The game also allows players to create their own levels. Nintendo says this game will arrive soon.

The hit eShop title Dillon's Rolling Western also gets a sequel, called Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger. This new entry in the series allows Dillon to recruit allies and requires players to protect a moving train in each stage. Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger hits the 3DS eShop on April 11 in North America.

The last new eShop title announced is a game known as Kersploosh!. Kersploosh! puts the player in control of various falling objects that have been thrown in a well. The objective is to avoid different obstacles and reach the bottom of the well in order to make a "Kerploosh!" sound. Kersploosh! will be available on the 3DS eShop on March 7 in North America.

Additionally Game Freak's highly anticipated 3DS eShop title HarmoKnight has been given a release date of March 28 in North America, with a free demo to be available on March 14.

TalkBack / The Rare Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon Crystal

This rare piece of merchandise will make Fire Emblem fans drool.

It seems as though everyone is talking about the recently released Fire Emblem Awakening. With all this hype, I thought it would be nice to take a look back at a rare piece of Fire Emblem merchandise in my collection. So behold: the Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon crystal.

From my understanding, one of these was handed out at select GameStop locations in North America as part of a promotional contest for Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon back in 2009. One was also awarded to the winner of a Fire Emblem trivia contest at the Nintendo World store.

The crystal itself is beautiful and features Marth’s sword, the Falchion, while the base has the Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon logo.

The piece comes packaged in two separate unmarked packages, one for the crystal and one for the base.

The case the crystal comes packaged in strongly resembles those that hold the Mario, Peach, and Link crystals that were once available at the Nintendo World store, hinting it was made by the same manufacturer.

The base also has a few LEDs that beautifully illuminate the crystal with multiple colors which slowly fade from one to the next. It runs on three AAA batteries and also has a plug for an external power source.

Overall, the Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon crystal is a great piece to have in any Nintendo or Fire Emblem collection. With that said it is still a rather rare piece, but some do pop up on eBay from time to time. In any case, just seeing this thing gets me hyped to play more Fire Emblem.

Feel free to check out more shots of this rare item in the gallery below.

Pokémon fans in the US will be able to obtain the rare and mythical Pokémon Meloetta at GameStop stores beginning March 4. Our Canadian readers can also capture Meloetta at participating EB Games locations starting March 9.

Meloetta will be available for download in Pokémon Black, Pokémon White, Pokémon Black 2, and Pokémon White 2 games.

No information has been given on how long this event will last, but a supposed leaked image of promotional information from a US GameStop claims that the event will end on March 24 in the United States.
