Check out goods from the Pokémon Center online store, as well as other cool Nintendo items.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/38748/nintendo-collectors-journal-10162014

For those who don’t know, I’m a pretty big Nintendo fanboy. I collect just about anything that says Nintendo on it including games, merchandise, memorabilia, and more. Here I am again taking over the Mariobilia feature for Andrew.

This week I take a look at several assorted Nintendo goods. However, the main event is different items I bought from the newly relaunched Pokémon Center online store. My favorite Pokémon is Mewtwo, so I had to grab some cool gear based on the guy. Enjoy!

You may not have noticed, but there have been two separate Nintendo themed Happy Meal sets at McDonald's this year in North America. First was a set based on Pokémon. Then, soon after, there was a set based on the newly released Mario Kart 8 game. I've obtained all of these toys and take a good look at them in this week's video. Enjoy!

TalkBack / Before Mario Book Now Available for Pre-Order
« on: October 08, 2014, 05:30:08 AM »

A hardcover book showcasing a visual history of Nintendo’s older toys and games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38680/before-mario-book-now-available-for-pre-order

Before Mario, a new visual book about Nintendo history, is now available for pre-order from Omaké Books.

The Before Mario book focuses on Nintendo history from 1965 through 1983 and will describe, with plenty of visuals showing off the company's older products, how Nintendo evolved from a small toy manufacturer into the famous company we all know and love today.

Before Mario is written by Erik Voskuil, a well-known collector of vintage Nintendo toys, and features a foreword by Satoru Okada. Okada is a recently retired Nintendo manager known for co-creating the Game Boy, Game & Watch games, and several other pieces of Nintendo software, hardware, toys, and games.

The Before Mario book is hardcover, full-colored, 224 pages, and is both in English and French. Two versions are currently available: the first is the standard book with a white cover while the second version features a black cover, is limited to 500 copies, includes a bookmark signed by the author, and comes with an Omaké Books trading card. The contents of both versions are identical.

7.jpg

Those who pre-order will be shipped the book two weeks before its November 20 release date and will receive a discount on shipping. The book costs 28 Euros (approximately $35 USD) and can ship worldwide.

Those interested can pre-order from Omaké Books here. Check below to view some sample pages from the book, and make sure you visit the author’s Before Mario blog as well.

People everywhere are getting smashed.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 2.8 million units worldwide.

This number accounts for both digital and physical sales in Japan, the Americas, Europe, and Australia. Nintendo believes that these strong sales numbers are the start of a “strong holiday season” for the company.

TalkBack / The Problem with Nintendo of America's Limited Editions
« on: September 30, 2014, 05:22:00 AM »

Nintendo of America is upsetting fans and losing potential money in the process.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/38623/the-problem-with-nintendo-of-americas-limited-editions

Back in May, we first heard that the Nintendo World Store in New York City would be exclusively selling a Limited Edition version of Mario Kart 8 in North America. This special game variant came with the anticipated Wii U racer  and a statue of the most iconic weapon in the game: a Spiny Blue Shell.

Then earlier this month, Nintendo of America announced that a Limited Edition of Hyrule Warriors, coming with the game and a replica of Link’s scarf, would also be sold exclusively at Nintendo World.

In both cases, the Limited Edition copies of the games were actually offered in nearly all the other regions in the world in a far less limited manner than here in North America. While Japan didn’t get a special edition of Mario Kart 8, they got an even better version of Hyrule Warriors.

Regardless, Nintendo of America’s decision to sell these collectable games in such small quantities, and only at one location, baffles me. It’s no secret that the company has struggled with the Wii U, so you’d think they would jump at the chance to sell their fans a more expensive premium edition of two of their four physical Wii U titles released this year.

3.jpg

Instead, resellers are profiting off of Nintendo’s poor decision by selling both the Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors bundles on eBay at around $400 each. I have no idea how many Mario Kart 8 bundles Nintendo World sold, but it has been reported that there were only approximately 300 copies of the Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition and not everyone who showed up even got one.

So you may be wondering what Nintendo should have done. Well, you may remember that last year Nintendo sold a Limited Edition of Zelda: Wind Waker HD through GameStop stores. So the company is no stranger to selling cool, more expensive versions of their games to fans in a way that is more accessible to them on the North American continent.

Nintendo could also sell Limited Editions of games through their online store. It’s something they haven’t really done in a long time, though they did sell Xenoblade Chronicles through the store when it released.

4.jpg

Or maybe Nintendo of America should follow the UK’s footsteps and launch a fully redesigned Nintendo World Online store to sell games and merchandise to fans instead of using a weird and dated online store mainly for parts and accessories. Heck, the Pokémon Company re-launched their own online store earlier this year, so I don’t know why Nintendo of America has refused to do something similar. It’s not like I can order cool stuff through a Nintendo Power Super Power Supplies catalog anymore.

In the end, though, thousands of Nintendo fans in North America got screwed out of getting a cool edition of two games that people in other regions have had greater access to. Many of these fans will walk away from the situation feeling upset and frustrated. It’s a shame, not only for these fans, but for Nintendo, since they failed to fully capitalize on their own market, losing a lot of money in the process. It’s a losing situation for everyone involved and it could have easily been avoided. Nintendo of America, please don’t keep making this mistake. I don’t want to have to sell a kidney to afford a possible Limited Edition of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

We probably won’t be seeing a new Ice Climber game anytime soon either.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38531/sakurai-reveals-why-ice-climbers-were-cut-more-smash-bros-details

Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the new Smash Bros. games, stated the Ice Climbers were running on the Wii U version of the game, but were cut due to the technical limitations of the 3DS version. A higher priority wasn’t given to the duo because the odds of a new Ice Climber game coming out in the near future is rather low.

Sakurai also went on to mention that the trophy descriptions found in the new games were written by Akihiro Toda. Toda is known for working on the Mother (Earthbound) series.

Additionally, Sakurai reiterated that the reason why the 3DS and Wii U versions were released at separate times was in order to give each game adequate time for debugging. If it had not been for this separate debugging process, both games would have likely been delayed until 2015.

All of this information comes from a bi-weekly column Sakurai writes in Famitsu.

I thought Smash 3DS was verified to be compatible.
Nope.
I'm fairly sure they confirmed it at the 8/29/2014 Nintendo Direct with the New 3DS  There's a difference between being compatible and not having the hardware to take advantage of it released.

Looked into it more and you may be right. I don't speak Japanese, but Iwata mentions something about Amiibo and the 3DS version. I'm not sure what he is saying though. If true, I haven't seen this news reported in many places. Thanks for the info and I'm looking into it further. :)

Though the more I think about it the weirder it is to think that NoA will release Amiibo without the Amiibo 3DS.  I wonder if its a supply thing.

Nintendo hasn't even announced any 3DS Compatible software yet, so it doesn't really matter much for the Amiibo launch.

Smash Bros. players with Nintendo's new hardware are in luck.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/38457/japans-unfair-smash-bros-3ds-advantage

We recently learned that the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. will not take advantage of Circle Pad Pro accessories. Instead, the new portable Smash Bros. will make use of the C-Stick built into the upcoming New Nintendo 3DS hardware.

I find this news awful because it gives Japanese players who buy a New 3DS access to a control scheme that allows for more tactical options within Smash Bros. It doesn't matter if you are a player that morally objects to the use of the C-Stick, the fact is that players who use it have an advantage.

The C-Stick gives players access to instant Smash attacks at a flick of the stick. Additionally, the C-Stick allows players to use reverse aerial attacks while traveling forward through the air. These examples highlight two basic ways having access to the C-Stick is useful, but there are more technical uses as well that might make your head spin.

In the past, the C-Stick has also proven useful for specific characters. For example, if the Ice Climbers grabbed an opponent, flicking the C-Stick made the computer-controlled climber unleash a Smash Attack without the player-controlled climber throwing their opponent. While I know the Ice Climbers have yet to be seen in the new Smash Bros. titles, it wouldn't surprise me if similar tactics were possible with a character like Rosalina and Luma.

This news also really bothers me because the game could have just been compatible with the Circle Pad Pro. It seemed like a no brainer from the start and it proves that Nintendo, sadly, isn't afraid to rarely support their officially released hardware accessories even when it makes the most sense.

Circle Pad Pro support for the 3DS version is something I've been hoping for since the accessory was announced. At E3 2014, I even suggested that the game take advantage of the accessory while playing it at Nintendo’s booth. Later, I was told by a Nintendo of America rep that this suggestion did in fact reach the development team. Basically, I tried my best to let Nintendo know that Smash Bros. enthusiasts wanted Circle Pad Pro support.

The bottom line is, shortly after Super Smash Bros. releases in the west, Japanese players who upgrade to the New 3DS will have a tactical advantage. So if we can play foreigners online, I am warning you to be wary because they may actually have more tools at their disposal than we will have until some time in 2015.

TalkBack / Remembering Donkey Kong Country Exposed
« on: September 09, 2014, 05:54:53 AM »

How Nintendo’s promotional VHS taped changed how we learn about upcoming titles.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/38417/remembering-donkey-kong-country-exposed

Being a Nintendo fan was very different 20 years ago than it is today. Very few people, especially kids, had access to the Internet. Video game news and information mainly came from a variety of magazines. Nintendo Power was what I considered the trustworthiest of them all since that news came directly from the source.

Back in 1994, gamers rarely got to see video games in action before their release. Most of the time, all we had was screenshots in magazines or (in rare cases) some footage played in a store. One day, however, that all changed when I received a special VHS tape in the mail from Nintendo Power. This tape was none other than Donkey Kong Country Exposed.

Donkey Kong Country Exposed took players inside Nintendo of America’s headquarters and revealed a lot about the upcoming Super Nintendo title. It clued viewers in on the game's story, development, music, and more. I don't remember if I had heard about Donkey Kong Country before watching this tape, but I was insanely hyped after watching it.

This promo video is significant to me for a number of reasons. For starters, it allowed people to get a glimpse inside Nintendo of America's headquarters. It may sound lame, but I even found Cafe Mario, a cafeteria within Nintendo of America, rather  exciting. Second, Donkey Kong Country Exposed is probably the first time most people outside of Nintendo learned about the internal product development team know as the Treehouse. This group was in its infancy at the time so I still find it fascinating.

Finally, Donkey Kong Country Exposed allowed players to see a game in action at home before it was released. Even the behind-the-scenes stuff was mind blowing to me at the time. Because of this promotional item, the path to learning about upcoming games was no longer confined to magazines. The form in which people were able to consume gaming news began to change.

This humble VHS had an enormous effect on me, probably due to watching it easily over 100 times. Donkey Kong Country became the first game I ever bought on its release date (actually I got it a few days early). It also reaffirmed one of my earlier childhood dreams of wanting to someday work for Nintendo of America.

In the end, Donkey Kong Country Exposed helped market and hype the revival of Nintendo's ape mascot in an amazing fashion. The format was a success and Nintendo sent other similar videos out over the years, most notably for Star Fox 64. Promotional VHS tapes may be gone, but one could argue that they are a predecessor of the Nintendo Directs we see today. Regardless, Donkey Kong Country Exposed will always have a special place in my heart, even after all these years.

TalkBack / Smash Bros. 3DS Not Compatible with Circle Pad Pro
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:40:16 AM »

New information on the control options for the upcoming 3DS title.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38435/smash-bros-3ds-not-compatible-with-circle-pad-pro

The Circle Pad Pro accessories, for older 3DS models, will not be compatible with the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game on 3DS. Despite this, the latest portable Smash Bros. game will take advantage of the C-Stick found on New Nintendo 3DS models.

Information regarding the New Nintendo 3DS enhanced features for Smash Bros. was revealed by Iwata in the latest Japanese Nintendo Direct. The news about the lack of Circle Pad Pro support was discovered on a Japanese game compatibility list provided by Nintendo for the accessory.

There is currently no word if Smash Bros. will make use of the additional shoulder buttons on New Nintendo 3DS platforms.

TalkBack / Amiibo Guide
« on: September 05, 2014, 05:22:00 AM »

Trying to keep track of all the different Amiibo Nintendo's releasing? Want to know what games they are compatible with and how each title uses them? We've got your back.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/38404/amiibo-guide

Nintendo's Amiibo NFC line is already a big hit with Nintendo fans. For that reason we here at Nintendo World Report will be continuously working on this living, breathing guide to help keep our readers informed about what Amiibo there are, what games they are compatible with, and how they will work in each game.

To easily use this guide, use the Table of Contents on the right hand side of the page. The first pages list each series of Amiibo and give a detailed rundown of each Amiibo in that line. After that, we go into detail about each Amiibo compatible game and have a description of how Amiibo are used in the title and a list of all the Amiibo compatible with that software.

At the time of writing this, we only know about Amiibo being made in the form of figures. However, Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, has even discussed making smaller, more affordable Amiibo figures, as well as Amiibo technology in different form factors such as cards.

Amiibo support will be coming to the standard Nintendo 3DS family of systems in 2015 through the use of an NFC reader accessory while the New Nintendo 3DS systems have an NFC reader built right into the hardware.

Something important to keep in mind while playing with your Amiibo is that each Amiibo can only store data from one Read/Write game at a time. Not all Amiibo supported software needs to store data (most currently don't), but we will make sure to mention if a game requires the ability to store data in this guide.

Keep checking back to this guide frequently for updated information on Amiibo and Amiibo compatible software.

The first details, and English trailer, for a Pokémon collaboration we knew was in the works.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38364/tekken-style-pokemon-fighting-game-pokken-tournament-revealed

Pokkén Tournament, a collaboration between The Pokémon Company and Bandai Namco, was officially announced today. Pokkén Tournament will be a Tekken-style fighting game starring Pokémon characters. The new game will first be released in Japanese arcades in 2015.

While no Western release has been confirmed, The Pokémon Company did release an English trailer hinting that the title may see the light of day outside of Japan.

This isn’t the first time we have heard about Pokkén Tournament. Previously, several trademarks were filed for the name and an extremely short teaser video was shown at a past Pokémon event.

Today’s trailer showed a Lucario facing off against a Machamp. The previously released teaser trailer also showed a Blaziken.

First 4 Figures has just opened up pre-orders for their new Sword Kirby statue. Sword Kirby is the first release in the recently-announced Kirby line, so low edition numbers will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Two different versions of the statue are being offered. The Exclusive version, only being sold on the manufacturer's website, includes a LED light up version of Kirby's sword slash, costs $239.99, and is limited to 850 pieces. The standard version has no LED, will have an edition size of 2,000 pieces, and costs $219.99.

Both versions of the Sword Kirby figure are 16 inches tall and are expected to ship out to customers in the first quarter of 2015.

Kirby fans will soon have some expensive merchandise to save up for.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38298/first-4-figures-acquires-kirby-license-teases-upcoming-statue

First 4 Figures has acquired the official license to manufacture statues based on the Kirby series of games. The first statue in the line, Sword Kirby, has been teased and will go up for pre-order this coming Tuesday on the manufacture's website. Low edition numbers will be given out on a first-come first-serve basis.

There has been no information about the physical size of the statues in this line, the edition size, or the price. However, Nintendo products from First 4 Figures typically have been over $100 dollars each, and some have sold for more than $300, so Kirby fans hoping to get one better start saving their money.

For years now First 4 Figures has been making high-end statues for a number of Nintendo owned Intellectual Properties including Mario, Zelda and Metroid.

TalkBack / We Dig Into the Latest Fossil Fighters on 3DS
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:44:09 AM »

Impressions, and an exclusive video, of Fossil Fighters: Frontier.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/38266/we-dig-into-the-latest-fossil-fighters-on-3ds

At E3, Nintendo of America announced plans to bring the third installment of the Fossil Fighters series, Fossil Fighters: Frontier, to North America. Unfortunately for us, the game was only playable during a kids only event. That left us press members looking on in awe as the lucky children walked away with a greater understanding of a title that few outside of Japan have encountered. Fortunately, Nintendo finally let us sample the upcoming 3DS title.

For those unaware, Fossil Fighters is a game about finding, digging up, and collecting dinosaur fossils. Once all the pieces of a dinosaur are found, it's possible to resurrect the beast and have it fight against other dinos.

On the surface, the concept isn't too dissimilar from Pokemon. However, there are some major differences. For starters, the power of the dinosaur you eventually fight with is determined by how neatly you dig up each fossil piece. Players are given a time limit and then have to carefully hammer and drill the fossils out of the ground. Damage the fossil a bit, and your dinosaur won't be at maximum strength.

The battle system is also very different that Pokemon. Yes, it's turned based, but the fights are completely different in execution. The first fight I encountered, in some sort of in game tournament, was a 3 on 3 fight.

While it was nice to give Fossil Fighters: Frontier a try, I can't say I'm too excited. The game felt similar to its predecessors, and those two titles failed to keep me hooked. However, players who loved the previous entries and are looking for more of the same will probably be satisfied.

TalkBack / White Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter Spotted
« on: August 11, 2014, 05:34:35 AM »

If you're wishing to own one, you will be disappointed.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38261/white-wii-u-gamecube-controller-adapter-spotted

We spotted a white colored Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter at a recent Nintendo event.

When we asked Nintendo representatives about this white variant we were told that it is simply a pre-production model and it will not be sold in stores. Regardless, we thought the item was cool enough to share with our readers.

The standard black Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter will launch alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U later this year. It will be available as a standalone item for $19.99, or as part of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U bundle for $99.99.
