Fans of Wind Waker won’t want to let this one sail away.

A new Zelda statue based on Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker has been teased by high-end figure manufacture First 4 Figures.

The statue is set to be put for up for pre-order sometime in 2015 and marks the first collectable that First 4 Figures has manufactured based on the Wind Waker game. Further details are not yet available at this time.

First 4 Figures also recently teased that they would be working on Star Fox statues adding to their robust line of figures based on Nintendo properties such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby.

TalkBack / Star Fox Statue Teased by First 4 Figures
« on: December 27, 2014, 07:17:42 PM »

Fans will be doing barrel rolls.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39303/star-fox-statue-teased-by-first-4-figures

High-end figure manufacturer First 4 Figures has just released a teaser for an upcoming Star Fox line of figures.

Over the last few days, First 4 Figures has been releasing teaser images of upcoming products they plan to release in 2015. Today they showed off what is unmistakably an Arwing from Star Fox. Further investigation leads us to believe that this figure will be based on artwork from Star Fox 64 3D.

Additionally, the company promised that a figure from a new license would go up for pre-order on Dec. 30. There is no word yet if this figure will be from Star Fox or some other franchise the company has yet to release a product for.

Nintendo fans should be familiar with First 4 Figures as they have also released, or are planning to release, statues from the Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Kirby series of games.

TalkBack / Before Mario Book Review
« on: December 05, 2014, 04:19:52 AM »

Our review of one of the latest Nintendo related books to hit the market.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/39159/before-mario-book-review

Before Mario is a newly released book aiming to inform readers about Nintendo’s toys, games, and products released before the Famicom (NES) era in 1983. For those not in the know, Nintendo started off as a playing card manufacturer in 1889, so there have been many products released by Nintendo in this close to 100 year long history. With that said, Before Mario has a slightly narrower scope, instead focusing only on Nintendo’s products from 1965 to 1983.

Before Mario is written by a Dutch Nintendo Collector named Erik Voskuil, a man who has one of the world’s largest collections of old-era Nintendo toys. Voskuil also runs a blog with the same name as this book.

The Before Mario book is hardcover, 224 full-colored pages, and measures 9.5 x 8 inches. It also features a heartwarming foreword by Satoru Okada, one of the first electronics engineers Nintendo hired back in 1969. You may not know him, but Okada worked on many Nintendo products including the Game & Watch series, Metroid, Game Boy, and the Nintendo DS before he left the company in 2010.

The heart of Before Mario lies in its 52 different product descriptions accompanied by a minimum of two pages of pictures and artwork from these classic items. The book breaks them all down into five different chapters as follows: Family Games, Toys, Electro-Mechanical Games, Portable Electronic Games, and Home Consoles. There are also a handful of shorter Bonus Sections as well.

7.jpg

One problem I have with the product descriptions in Before Mario is that they are somewhat short. In some cases I know there is more that could be written about these products and how they relate to Nintendo’s history. This problem might stem from the fact that the pages of the book are in both French and English, so having descriptions in two different languages probably meant space was limited. I feel the book would have benefited if these descriptions were longer and the French language was removed and republished in its own edition.

I also have some minor issues with the formatting of Before Mario. Since the book is in both French and English, the product descriptions are often written side by side. For approximately the first half of the book the French descriptions are on the left, and the English on the right. But then the book appears to sometimes mix up which side each is written on and it leaves the reader fumbling for a second to find what they can read.

One more issue I have with the formatting is that each chapter seems to present products in a random order. Sometimes similar items appear in successive order, and other times it feels somewhat unplanned. The strange thing is that the year the product was released is stated on each page. I don’t understand why the author wouldn’t arrange these items in chronological order as it would have made following Nintendo’s journey a bit easier .

9.jpg

These qualms aside, I still can’t get enough of the visuals found in Before Mario. Since this is a hardcover book of decent size, it’s just a real treat to look at. The pictures are big, colorful, and like nothing else found in any other book that I have seen relating to Nintendo history. Fans of Nintendo wishing to get a good glance at some of these obscure products will enjoy looking at each page in wonderment.

It’s hard to recommend Before Mario as the best book on Nintendo’s history due to its brief product descriptions. If you are looking to learn more about Nintendo history, I--and even the Before Mario book itself--suggest reading the History of Nintendo series by Florent Gorges.

With that said, Before Mario does shine on its own due to its hardcover, size, and beautiful pictures. Nintendo fans around the world will enjoy just paging through it and leaving it out for guests to take a glimpse at the products that came before Nintendo was the video game giant we know and love today. The bottom line is that Before Mario is easily the best Nintendo coffee table book on the market today.

Those interested in Before Mario can order it from the Omaké Books here or here from Pix’n Love.

TalkBack / Steel Diver: Sub Wars Version 4.0 Out Now
« on: December 03, 2014, 01:53:00 AM »

A major update has arrived for one of Nintendo’s freemium 3DS games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39141/steel-diver-sub-wars-version-40-out-now

An update for Steel Diver: Sub Wars, Version 4.0, is available now on the 3DS eShop.

The 4.0 update includes a series of changes over the previous version. For starters, it’s now possible for players to remodel each of the game’s 39 subs in the game for $0.99 each. Remodeling a sub will upgrade the number of crew members it can hold to six. Previously, each sub had a different number of crew members, which act like stat bonuses, that could fit in each.

The play coin requirement for players trying to go online with the free version of the game has also been removed. For more changes in the 4.0 update, check out the list below.

- The angle at which subs surface and dive has been made less steep so it’s now easier to evade attacks.

- Subs with a health of six or more now have an added defense bonus.

- In single player missions, crew members that have already been collected will no longer appear, making it easier to collect them all.

- Players between Level 30 and 49 can now play Matched-Skill Battles against one another online.

- The starting positions on the Hot Springs map have reverted to how they were in Version 1.0.

- A bug has been fixed that damaged a player’s subs when they sunk an enemy.

A Nintendo Day haul.

For those who don’t know, I’m a pretty big Nintendo fanboy. I collect just about anything that says Nintendo on it including games, merchandise, memorabilia, and more. Here I am again taking over the Mariobilia feature for Andrew.

Last week was huge for Nintendo. The company launched Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, and Amiibo. This week's video takes a look at my haul from Nintendo's big launch day and it also include some cool promo items as well. Enjoy.

TalkBack / How to Use Amiibo Without Completely Destroying the Box
« on: November 25, 2014, 04:03:29 AM »

For those of us who like to have the full package in our collection.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/video/39091/how-to-use-amiibo-without-completely-destroying-the-box

As many of you probably know by now, it's not possible to use Amiibo in their original packages. Nintendo's new figures have a metallic strip placed directly under the NFC chip. For collectors who planned on keeping Amiibo in the box, this is terrible news.

The good news is that I've figured out one way to remove this metallic strip while doing minimal damage to the box. For the full tutorial, check out the video below!

Also, for all the information we currently have Amiibo, check out our giant Amiibo Guide.

TalkBack / Here Are All of the Retailer-Exclusive Amiibo
« on: December 16, 2014, 01:08:10 PM »

Like it or not, you'll have to visit specific stores if you want them all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39090/here-are-all-of-the-retailer-exclusive-amiibo

While the bulk of Nintendo's lineup of NFC figurines will be available across a number of different retail outlets, some are exclusive to particular stores.

So far, in North America, we know that the Shulk amiibo will be exclusive to GameStop, Meta Knight will only be found at Best Buy, you'll have to take a trip to Toys 'R Us if you want to pick up Lucario, and Rosalina and Luma will only be available at Target.

This probably won't be the end of retailer-exclusive amiibo, so stay tuned to Nintendo World Report for updates on which other figures will be tied to specific retailers in the weeks and months to come.

In the meantime, check out our comprehensive amiibo guide.

TalkBack / Smash Bros. 3DS Update Released
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:19:54 AM »

Includes actual character balance changes.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39058/smash-bros-3ds-update-released

A patch for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Version 1.0.4 is now available in the Nintendo eShop. The official patch notes state that adjustments were made to the balance of the game and to make it a more pleasant experience. This patch is required for online play.

A full list of character balance changes has not been officially released, but testing has shown some major changes. Examples include an increased amount of time for Rosalina's Luma to respawn after death, and suiciding with Bowser's over special attack no longer grants him the win.

The fact that there are balance changes means that old replay data will no longer work once the patch is installed. Also, when playing locally both players will have to be running the same version of the game in order for it to work.

TalkBack / How We Think Smash Bros. 3DS Should Be Updated
« on: October 22, 2014, 06:00:30 AM »

After playing countless hours, here are a few ideas on how to make Smash Bros. on 3DS better.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/38799/how-we-think-smash-bros-3ds-should-be-updated

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has been out for a few weeks now and I've spent way too much time playing it. While the game is extremely fun, I have found that there are several changes and additional features I'd like to see made available through future software patches.

While no major update is guaranteed, Nintendo has already released a patch for the game on day one that, as far as we know, improved the online play.  How far they are willing to go with these updates is currently unknown. That said, Satoru Iwata has stated that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS would support Amiibo, so some sort of update is likely in the works to accommodate this promised feature.

So without further ado, here are my wants in a Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS update.

2.jpg

Characters

Yes, we all want more characters added to the roster. Personally I'd like to see Ice Climbers, Mewtwo, Wolf, and Lucas make a comeback. We could talk about this all day, so I'm just going to end it with that. (I won't be going into character balance changes. While it's something I'd like to see eventually, the meta game is too young to make smart tweaks.)

3.jpg

Stages

I feel like there are currently too many stages that move too much or have some sort of stage hazard. There is nothing really wrong with these, but more stages that are considered tournament viable would be nice too. Not every level needs a ridiculous feature. So hopefully we see a few more levels added to the game or maybe just a way to turn off specific stage hazards. Also, why is there still an open space on the stage select screen? Is this hinting at something, or will it become one of those unsolvable Nintendo mysteries?

4.jpg

Online

The online mode actually works this time around and is surprisingly fun and addictive. However, that doesn't mean a few positive changes can't be made.

Multiple For Glory Modes - I like to play Smash Bros. tournament style without items, so this mode is perfect for me. However, I don't know of any Smash Bros. competitions that only use Final Destination. For that reason, I'd like the For Glory mode to be split into two.

The current For Glory model can still exist and be called Omega For Glory. Then a new For Glory option should be added that adds a wider list of playable stages.

Custom Moves - It's understandable that, currently, the online modes do not allow for the use of custom moves. However, I do think that optional modes should be added for people wishing to use them. So there should be For Fun and For Glory (both Omega and with more stages) modes that let players use Custom Moves. I still think equipment and Mii Fighters should be banned in this mode.

Team Battles - Yes, it's currently possible to play two vs. two battles online. Though what's really baffling is the fact that there is no way to team up with a friend. Does anyone really want to play doubles with randomly assigned allies?  I’d love for it to be possible to team up with someone on my friends list.

Rivals - Past Nintendo titles made it possible to add players you enjoyed playing against to a Rivals list (with the consent of that player). It’d be great if this Feature was brought to Smash Bros.

5.jpg

Smash Run – Smash Run is a major mode that is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version. I’ve played it all by myself countless times in order to complete challenges and to unlock various goods. The downside is it’s a very lonely mode for a lot of people. It would be nice if there were a way to make Smash Run work online.

Communities - Mario Kart 7 and 8 both featured Communities or Tournaments. Basically, someone could set one of these up with whatever rules they made and people could join and play with other members with the Community code. It was a great way to play against other people who have similar rule tastes to your own. I have no idea why Smash Bros. doesn't take advantage of this.

Amiibo Battles - Once Amiibo support is implemented I'm hoping they add some online modes that support the figures. It would be great to let my Amiibo figures fight online against other player's figures in either one vs. one or two vs. two battles. Heck, we should also be able to do two vs. two fights where I can fight alongside my Amiibo. Not only would this be fun, but it would add value to Nintendo's new line of toys.

7.jpg

Multi-Man Smash

Currently after successfully completing one of these challenges, players are required to exit out of the mode and reenter it in order to play again with a different character. Other Stadium modes in the game offer an option to play again with a different character. Why is that feature absent here?

7.jpg

Shops

Trophies are only one of the major collectables in this game. So the shop, which often contains trophies the player has yet to unlock, is a very nice addition. After playing hours of that Trophy Shooter mini-game in Brawl, you better believe I appreciate it.Sadly, there is currently no shop for Custom Parts. Custom Parts, especially Custom Moves and Mii Accessories, are extremely annoying to obtain. So a shop selling these major additions to the Super Smash Bros. experience would be very welcome and save players a ton of unnecessary time required to grind for everything. Heck, they could even make this long grind a bit less stressful to players by not letting duplicates drop until everything is collected.

8.jpg

Replay Sharing

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS lets players save match replays in a way that is vastly improved over how it was handled in Brawl. Sadly, there is currently no way to share these replays with friends. Hopefully a replay-sharing feature is patched in, or maybe Nintendo could release a standalone application to share and view this data.

9.jpg

Further New Nintendo 3DS Support

Our own Danny Bivens has tried Smash Bros. out on Nintendo’s updated handheld. The good news is, yes the C-stick is supported, as are the new ZL and ZR buttons. The bad news is that there is currently no way to change the controls for any of the new buttons on the New 3DS. Hopefully a future update will allow users to assign their own commands to the new shoulder buttons and allow players to choose between the new or old style of C-stick functionality.

-

Do you think I missed something important? Do you like these changes? Have an idea of your own? Let us hear about it in the talkback thread below!
