I don't think it's released in Europe.

Hell, it's what Nintendo would have done. Come to think of it, have they ever brought a game with major voice acting to America?
Metroid: Other M comes to mind.

Arc Rise Fantasia?

Wasn't that Ignition?

I got the one that came in the Tekken 6 bundle, Hori IIRC. Works well for games like Recettear.

Meh, out of those choices none look appealing to me.

Hammerfight: The idea of combat with giant helicopter-mounted weapons like maces, swords and axes is fun, it has many fun parts but it also has depths of frustration few games ever reach. Like the first boss being an escort mission where the boss can instakill the escort target with a stray movement or some enemies exploding which will hurt you badly when you are around and since it's a melee focused game you will be around.

Also the ringing ears effect trope has to die, seriously.

Just dug that game back out again after getting so damn bored with Lock's Quest. Search didn't find a thread about it.

Ecolis is a Pikmin-like RTS with the big theme being saving the forest and fighting the polluters (a bit like Captain Planet) but I wouldn't call it edutainment unless the proper solution to pollution is to summon a bunch of magic squirrels to beat up the polluters.

You run around, sending your forest sprites to beat up things that you don't like and make sure your home tree doesn't die. It's mostly really easy, just spam units and you'll likely win. There's a bonus timer for every level, I suppose you can go for beating that time if you want an actual challenge. Or play it against a friend, there's single-cart MP but don't ask me how that works.

You have three basic types of sprites which can be turned into 4 different subspecies each. There's a separate raising mode where you can level them up or alter their stats with items you gather during missions. They also have a number and a temper. To make more sprites you need to plant matching trees during missions but the more of them you actually put into your team the thinner their experience points are spread and that lowers their level (the number you have is the maximum number you can summon in a mission at the same time, they're still replaceable). The temper is affected by semi-random events popping up, the sprites want to play with you and that shows some random event, you then can choose one of three options that will affect the temper differently. It's used to determine the autonomous behaviour of the sprites in battle, how much they run around when idle, how much they try to attack enemies and how much damage they will take before running away. Mix that however you like it.

The interface is a bit limited, like in Pikmin you have a character running around but you give orders with the stylus instead of throwing the sprites around. A problem is that even your gather and select all functions have a limited range around your character so it can get difficult to round up all the sprites you have fielded, especially if their temper makes them run around when idle which makes them spread very far across the map. The upside is that since you can only be in one place, giving orders in one area those stray sprites can end up fighting enemies on other parts of the map, saving you travel time. In one case I even had most of my sprites elsewhere autonomously fighting the boss while I was hanging back and dealing with his attacks to my home tree. One of your sprite types can airlift stuff but using them to airlift other sprites would take way too long to input, you'd have to give the orders one by one so you'll probably limit that to airlifting important things like your character or springboards. The individual sprite abilities rarely get used outside of the tree growing which is the equivalent of building things and also unlocks additional skills for your character if you do it enough (to a tedious degree).

What I don't like is how easily your character dies, there's no real consequence to that except being teleported back to the home tree but it's very annoying because it means running back to where the action is (or was if the sprites do all the fighting in the meantime). I suppose if I wasted hours of my life growing more trees with the ecolis dance I could grind up the health by increasing the greening percentage but I'm already way over the mission par times without growing more than 3-4 trees. You can't queue those things up and they keep your sprites busy for a while so growing many trees is tedious.

It's interesting how much auxiliary effort has gone into the game with local and online MP and even a level editor but the extremely low challenge kinda makes the game boring.

Meh, Rising Star has handled plenty of games that would seem problematic at first glance (look at this list!). If in doubt just keep the voice acting as is and translate only the subtitles.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS Will Be Region Locked
« on: January 14, 2011, 10:48:24 AM »
I have a feeling that this also has to do with the parental features restricting specific ESRB, PEGI, CERO and etc. ratings. Since each region has their own rating system, each game would logically have it's respective rating encoded in the game in order to make this feature work.

Honestly I don't buy that explanation, Germany has the USK, Britain the BBFC and yet neither gets separate releases on any platform with parental controls.

Didn't the UK agree to switch to PEGI last year since that is what the rest of Europe uses? Germany does have USK, and because of that there are several games that didn't get released in that country because they thought they were too violent.

Yes but if ratings are the only reason for region locking then Germany would be in a different region than the rest of Europe. If they really can handle multiple ratings for one game then why can't they stuff ESRB, PEGI, USK and CERO on the same cart? They've got 8GB!

"No plans" doesn't mean it won't change. Alternatively I hope they'll let Rising Star handle it.

Wasn't that the sort of "worst-case-scenario" battery life Nintendo said about the DS?

That was 5 IIRC. At least that's what mine was getting and I think I recall that being what Nintendo listed. I don't think the estimates will be wrong, Nintendo is only known for lowballing compared to other companies who tend to give unrealistic figures (wasn't PSP announced as 4 but lasted like 2 with heavy drive use?).

Astroman is a good platformer. The physics and enemies remind me a lot of early Metroid games but the game is level-based, not open world like Metroid. There are upgrades to find but with the different structure it doesn't feel like Metroid. Still fun.

Well, let's see what else there was that didn't get mentioned yet...

radiangames everything: This guy is a machine, he's been making a game per month and they're all great.

Garden Gnome Carnage: It's hilarious, WTF and IMO worth paying the dollar for even though there's a free flash version. This one has military dudes and matching music instead of the christmas elves of the original, IMO that funnier.

Null Divide: Retro-styled (and I mean that in a NES way, not Jeff Minter) twin-stick shooter with Metroidy upgrading. It makes more use of upgrading than Astroman so it feels more Metroidy than that.

Abaddon Retribution: Nice space shooter (not purely twin-stick) where you upgrade and defend a massive mothership, the difficulty curve in coop MP is a bit wonky but otherwise it's great.

Coral's Curse: Another Metroidy game, this one has one big connected world and casts you as a snake-woman with a long tail that you have to use to get through the world. The physics make it interesting.

I'm betting this won't come out in Germany, they axed merc mode from RE4 to appease the censors so a game based on the mode isn't going to fly.

What I thought was a pretty irritating flaw was that the first level is the longest in the game, you have to go through that before you even understand the basics so I (and probably many others) switched to Easy to get a grasp on the game but Easy breaks many aspects of the game (especially bosses, they go down if you spam all your super attacks but other enemies too die before they can shoot).

The rap made me glad there's a chapter feature.

If you want strategy that Europa Universalis isn't giving you then maybe look at AI War? It's weird but definitely strategy.

I hope that's a low balling estimate.

With Nintendo it usually is, that's probably on full screen brightness. If not then wait for the 3DS Lite. The DS got a massive improvement with the Lite (the original had 5 hours of battery life, the Lite can go up to 18 or so on lower brightnesses). Either way it's not as bad as the iPod Touch (2 hours).
