Nintendo bought Retro for $1m. That is a stupidly tiny amount of money for the quality it produced since, and it might be something Nintendo should consider doing in the long term. Plus, Nintendo have no European studios at all.
Next Level Games and Monster Games are the only other two worth purchasing since then really. If Nintendo wanted to work with n-Space again they would have, and since Geist they haven't, then its not looking likely.
Yeah nintendo is real big on having close relationships with devs. While that is good I'd say its better in the long run to invest and build new studios from the ground up. Look at Sony.
You make a valid point, however, look at the financial turmoil that Sony has been going through recently. This would shy Nintendo away from building a large western powerbase due to loss of money. Keep in mind though that Sony has created some really good blockbuster games with western developers. Nnitendo needs to do the same if they want to remain competitive.
Nintendo is one of the few developers in the industry that is not really experienced with handling HD games and technology. By aquiring more western talent Nintendo could leap frog this problem and have a large arsenal of good western oriented games to supplement their own IPs.
Vigil Games
Radical Entertainment
Raven Software
Volition Software
These four developers have large amounts of talented workers within their company. The long term health of THQ is in question and the two developers from their sphere, Volition and Vigil, would go good with Nintendo. Nnitendo could also offer to buy a controlling stake in Radiacal and Raven Software to make more western games.
Max Payne 3 is not doing that hot, Lollipop Chainsaw might be niche like most Grasshopper Manufacture releases and I honestly don't expect it to be a big seller. The other 2 I could see happening, but none of those 4 have been announced for Wii U as of right now.
They could always port those games over to the eShop, or if Steam will be available for the system.
Microsoft could do that, but why would they if they didn't have to?
Because this way they could crush their competitors, just like they did to Netscape back in the '90s.
If only one console is a beast machine it isn't going to crush the competition.
It took both the ps3 and 360 together to make development worthwhile. Unless the next xbox vastly increases its user-base for some unpredictable reason one console becoming a beast would be suicide in this day when ports are the norm. The system being a beast just isn't much of a selling point. They would be asking developers to focus on their platform and theirs alone years in advance despite the fact that they can't port games and the development is more expensive. I can't imagine anyone outside Epic and other companies that sell technology instead of games supporting it very much if they have any business sense.
Any losses Microsoft might suffer from the NeXbox420 will more than be made up for by Windows 7.
Fixed that for you. Windows 8 is the "odd" OS version that tanks (see: ME, Vista)
Sony's fine. They'll be around for a while. They may pull the plug on handhelds in a few years, but it'll take a lot for them to pull out of the video game market altogether.
