Kind of related but here's some of the gaming stuff in windows 8 looks like

Played with a few of the features.

The play to is pretty cool. I can throw any video, audio,or photo file and it will playbon the xbox. Ot also works in apps as I used the CW app to test it. Oddly enough it didn't work with my podcast app :(. Coolest feature is that it doesnt have to go I to any special app to play. I threw a youtube video to the xbox and it played it in the xbox video player without having to go into the youtube app. You can set it to play whatever you want or don't play if your playing a game.

The xbox Video app uses the cloud to tell were your at. Started a movie on my xbox and paused went to my Win 8 Pc and started where the xbox was paused from. Also I noticed the xbox music app wasn't finished as it didn't have the playlist interface like the windows 8 version had.

Couldn't test the smartglass stuff as that it isn't in the Win 8 release preview. Did play with the companion app which is a very striped down smartglass and all it does is allow me to control the dashboard.

The Xbox Live app currently allows me to start games from windows 8 (clicking play on say fez will start it up on the xbox) as well as buy xbox live games for windows 8 as well as the xbox which will start a download on my console.  Also not expecting the spotlight to be filled with 360 games after win8 launches expect most of those to be xbox live metro games with maybe a tab for say halo 4.

General Gaming / Re: Sony Playstations: Are it Doomed?
« on: August 02, 2012, 02:10:47 PM »
my brother used to be a 3dfx fanboy, these things happen. We had an older Sony Doom and Gloom thread. And I have to say that Sony going bankrupt only has positive implications. There are some good Sony game franchises that are good now, but those could go multiplatform if bought out. Spiderman would get a chance to be an avenger.

Saw no. One of the reason Sony games work so well is because its devs are used to working on its closed platform and coding to the metal.

And dear God don't let spiderman anywhere near the avengers. It barley works in the comics.

See Microsoft "didn't abandon the core" they just decided to expand their customer base and it worked and they are probably going to end this Gen at #2. And its not like Sony didn't try this either with move. The only difference was move flopped and Sony quickly decided to become the company for the gamers. Personally I'm a big fan of all the media functions of the xbox and I probably spend more time on that stuff than gaming as of late.

Though how does one constitute how core a system is. While Sony has more retail exclusives microsoft has way more arcade exclusives. This year alone a good number of titles have come out for the system. But people tend to ignore xbla for somereason and kinect seasme street TV and Kinect neon vat TV wont count either.

Reminds me of the people on RPS and Gaf for shifting on the skulls of the shogun devs for going windows 8 exclusive instead of steam.

2254
Eh I didn't like last year's version. Of metro that much but been playing around with the beta and its been really good thus far.  Though I'm also not the biggest fan of Nintendo and Sony's GUI'S either as they seem to have been an after though it the making. Wish vita would have stuck with XMB or went with android.

Also a. Company using shady tactics doesn't mean I wont use their products or that them have a compelling ecosystem is t tire. Apple has been abusing the patent system and Google mines users for ad data and Inever hear complaining about that (well I do with google) but that isn't going to stop me from using my ipod or Google+.

And I mean look at it this way

Windows 8
Windows RT
Windows Phone
Xbox Music and Video
Skydrive
Office
Skype
Outlook

Thats a pretty compelling ecosystem and not even all of it. Microsoft couldn't have some serious advantages going into next gen if they leverage Skydrive as the 720's cloud system. I have 25GB of cloud storgae that I use mostly for photos and documents if they allowed me too use my skydrive data that would be great and since Microsoft seems to be pushing connectivity and save transfer between their platforms it would make sense.

Same thing with leveraging skype. I remember seeing the miiverse video and honestly laughing at the video chat feature (mostly because of the weird put the controller down and use that implementation) seeing as how kinect 2.0 has a high chance of launching with the 720 having skype at launch would be a pretty big selling point.

Nope I'm thinking the 720 will have 8GB of ram for a reason. While its rude that most consoles have at least half of what the de. Kits have the 720 wont be a console in the traditional sense. If you look back at the leaked document chromatic while back it talks about playing your favorite new AAA game while.

-Skyping
-Recording your favorite shows
-listening to streamed music
-while looking at a sports ticker on the bottom of the screen.

Also you have tto think about

1)Developers are going to want at least more than 2GB of ram to work with and Microsoft is known for bumping its specs for developers.
2)They are going to really oush the 720 is more than a game console angle. Going to have to want a lot of memory for the various apps and what not they are going to be pushing.
3)The 720 OS is going to be based on WinRT which needs a minimum of 1GB
4)they are going to want kinect to have its own piece of ram so it doesnt use resources from other areas.
5)To future proof it for another 10+ year cycle. Microsoft thought 512 was enough for the xbox and thats been stretching thin with 360 lacking obvious features it should have.

In total

4GB- Games
3GB-OS and non gaming functions
1GB- next gen kinect (though thats if kinect 2.0 doesn't have its own ram cache)

But who knows I could be wrong.

Even though its using modern architecture Sony and Microsoft could easily just bring out some very beefy systems that let you code to the metal.

That and if the rumors are right the Wii U is going to probably be wii'd in the future as devs start using the other hardware more. I mean I think the Wii U has around 2GBs of ram. That isn't a lot and rumored is 720 is going to have 8GB.

But if all that matter remains to be seen. It mostly depends if nintendo is going to go with a ten year console cycle like the others.

2257
Eh I'd say it would be fair to say I lean towards Microsoft. But growing up nintendo I have a softspot for them. That and liking a company doesn't mean I think everything they do is perfect or I have to dislike others.

Though I have had my fanboy moments like proclaiming smartglass is better than the gamepad (I still sort of think so) and I think Microsoft is in the best shape going into next gen and have a way more compelling ecosystem than nintendo and Sony do.

2258
You never know. We didn't know the surface was going to be announced wither.

And while Xbox may trumpet Windows phone I doubt it would overshadow windows 8. While most game blots would be over most tech sites would do one or two wrote ups on it and focus on windows.

I would love it if someone kicked UE to the curb. I'm convinced it's one of the main reasons aesthetics got so crummy this gen, as well as underpinning textured hallway mania. I don't have a great grasp on what CryEngine brings to the table, but I remember that Crysis 2 felt more like Perfect Dark than most games attempt at this point.

Yes blame the engine instead of shitty art and le el direction.

So Microsofts Build Conference has finally been dated for October 30th to November the 2nd.
http://www.buildwindows.com

There's a slight chance that we could see the new xbox there. With Microsoft dropping out of CES and wanting to control their own press it seems like the logical place to show off the new xbox along with the rest of microsofts product ecosystem.

Given its pretty obvious that the Nextbox will be running some varient of windows 8 it seems like ot would be pretty obvious to announce the next piece in the Microsoft family. During this years CES keynote Microsoft showed off thief three consumer facing branches (Windows 8,Windows phone and xbox)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=KlPw3t1khHs

While a good chunck of the first Keynote will be about Windows 8 (launching days before) and Windows phone 8 (launching sometime in November) that still probably isn't enough to fill pit the two hours that the first keynote is. From a timing Standpoint it could be a good move also. With Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 out the door you already have a solid base and with all of the xbox's fall lineup out save for Halo 4 out you don't have to worry about the canabalization of sales from people deciding to wait. You then get a pretty decent reveal frame like

Xbox 720 reveal at build-October 2012
First Xbox 720 game footage at spike VGAs- December 2012
Next big reveal at GDC/X12- March 2012
E3 720 blowout- June 2012
720 release date-November 2012

Seeing az how build is a developer eve t and last year's had a few xbox live sessions it seems that it would take advantve of tthe massive hype.

Also  Was under the impression that the reason why Sony bought Gaikai was because lack of BC between PS3 and PS4. Being able to run all that software through the cloud would be a aorta of solution tl the problem.

Also I'm in the beta for the new xbox dashboard and I'd be happy happy if the 720 OS is a more refined version

Would be good. Still thinking $350 though.

If anyone will bow out first it will be Microsoft.

Sony has to much pride in the game now.
Nintendo this is there bread and butter it be like Apple Deciding to no longer make Macs.

Microsoft this is a conduit for them more then anything else.  If they can find a better way they'll just migrate on.

Eh Microsoft is changing the xbox to be more than a console. If they are successful in the whole owning the living room than they wont be leaving anytime soon.

Sony wont give up because the Games divsion is one of their fee profitable (which is pretty sad). I honestly don't expect to be here in the next 5-8 years if they don't get their stuff together.

I think Nintendo is ina odd position. They only have two core bussines (handheld and console) and both are being dimonshed somewhat. Consoles in general are becoming less relevant in Japan and handhelds everywhere else. Though they still have a ton of money and a lot of good franchises.

Bulletstorm

There's a good chance the PS4 wont be BC with the PS3. Either.

Also I'm still going with fall 2013 for Durango at least. I'm expecting an annoucment event between October and December.  Quite possibly at the Windows 8 launch event.

Sounds about right.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Should Nintendo Buy SEGA?
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:35:18 AM »
Always assumed that Microsoft would buy Sega after last gennor at least had some interest before the Rare deal went bad.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to let Sega did and just pick of the IP and studios

And even if someone outright bought the studio wouldn't the company be sued if the newly purchased Sega went exclusive only.  That and it would be boiled down to justa few studios.

Sonic Team
Yakuza Studio combined with NE RD department
All of the WM software teams combined
All the Sega sports teams combined
Creative assembly

Was wondering if anyone knew all the studios nintendo owened and an Accurate source of info?

I find it odd that its hard to find out nintendos development info whole Sony and Microsoft's are pretty easy to come by.

Mid to late November seems sound.

I do wish Nintendo would be more proactive about at least marketing and showing off the system more to the enthusiast community. I'm expecting were going to get a lot of info around TGS and the ad campagin to start around October which could be a good or bad thing.

2271
At what point did the talent leave Rare?  When defending Nintendo's decision to sell them all I hear is that "well everyone who was any good had left".  Uh huh.  When did this happen?  Conker's Bad Fur Day kicked ass.  Star Fox Adventures is a pretty low note to end the Nintendo/Rare era on but it isn't just outright crap.  I would call it a well-made game with some major flawed ideas (and made by a team that had clearly lost their passion for the project when the big company execs shoehorned an unrelated IP into their game).  Did everyone skip out between Conker and SFA or is this revisionist history to defend the all-mighty infallible Nintendo.  All I get is vague answers.  Who left and when?  And no, don't point out DK64 and say "that game sucked" to defend yourself because Rare still released awesome games, including Perfect Dark, after DK64.

To me it seems like Nintendo sold off the company that almost single-handedly kept the N64 afloat in North America because their consistently great and successful games were often delayed even though Nintendo themselves always did that anyway.  And while Rare sucked with Microsoft, that's the point.  They sucked with Microsoft.  The Nintendo/Rare collaboration was what created the magic.

I look at the Rare sale as Nintendo pretty much signing the Cube's death certificate.  Okay so we're going in with the image that we're some kiddy company and the only cool stuff we got is Rare and Zelda.  So let's sell Rare and turn Zelda into a cartoon and then act completely befuddled when the system underperforms.

Did Star Fox Adventures suck because Rare had lost it or because Nintendo meddled with it in a way I would expect out of Activision or EA?  Hell the game came out around the same time Rare was sold.  The sale didn't happen overnight.  Is it possible that the impending sale could have had some effect on the SFA team's work?  You start off with this ambitious N64 game and then you have to move it to another system and then some meddling exec (ironically a fellow game designer) sabotages your whole creative vision and insists you insert an unrelated IP (with ridiculous gameplay elements like the Arwing levels that would naturally have to be thrown in) and this is all happening while there is talk that your company might be sold to someone else.  Could there be a less inspiring work environment?  Dinosaur Planet was likely ruined by outside factors.

its not so much that they left all at once, but they are 80% gone now. First Free Radicals left so no more Goldeneye/PD team, then slowly more people left, and finally the stampers themselves left.

but back to the wishing Rare would come back. I think i mentioned earlier, but its worth mentioning again...Microsoft posted their first quarterly loss ever, and a good Hollywood accounting way for making that as if it never happened is to sell some IPs that don't make them much money. They might make more money selling those IPs then holding on to them. If their long term global domination goals are to be believed, then they will get them back in the long run anyhow.

You do realize that that loss was due to a write off so it doesn't mean anything in the long run and they made 7billion in profits with 16billion in revenue. That and microsoft is looking are to what people are looking to what could be there most profitable holiday season ever with multiple product launches. That and if Nintendo has a good change or chunk accumulated and apple has a warchest I. The billions hownmuch money do you think Microsoft has.

That ans Microsoft aren't known for selling IP. They usually lisence it to other companies to use.

2272
Okay then. But if they owned 49% of Rare then doesn't that mean they were 49% owners of these franchises as well?

Technically Yes but for a IP buyout to go through than the shareholders wouldst have to agree and Microsoft becoming the majority shareholder killed any chance of that.

Thats the main reason why Nintendo sold off their shares to Microsoft.

2273
Nintendo never should have sold Rare's IPs in the first place. Selling the studio itself was the right move because all the talent was gone and it was basically an empty husk of what it used to be, but the franchises were worth holding onto. Why did Nintendo part with those?

While people left much of the talent didn't leave until after the last Banjo and Viva Pintana. Some hyperbole there. Also Rare owned the IP not nintendo. I'm honestly surprised at how many people didn't know that. All of The OG IP made from Rare stayed with them with expection of a few. If if nintendo wanted them they couldn't have did anything.

2274
Not going to happen for a number of reasons.

1) The Rare IP is very bauble for Microsoft.
2) Rare is Microsoft's main kinect studio and is also heavily invested kn the avatar stuff on the OS side.
3)Rare helps other developers on a tech level similar to how Sony Santa Monica helps smaller studios.
4)Rare is currently hiring for multiple next gen xbox games.
)

2275
Nope I like my Halo's,unchrateds, and exclusive xbla and psn to much.

And I could be honestly very wrong but isnt the PC market in terms of big releases slowing down.

That and I'm wondering how windows 8 will affect steam.
