At the time a game like SMB2 didn't seem that weird because Zelda II and Castlevania II came out the same year and were also quite different from their predecessors.  It was like a thing on the NES that the second game in a series was the different one.

Same, to me it was supposed to be different since that's what sequels were.  Who would want to play the same game year after year after all?  Then I fell in love with Megaman and learned who.   

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to finally make another Mario game that plays like this and you figure the NSMB series would be the perfect chance to do so.  I also want another Zelda II.

I've long wanted that as well.  Not that I prefer the SMB2 game style to standard SMB, it would just be nice to have something different now and then.  It does help that I like it.

This shouldn't matter but he looks grumpy in that photo.  Very different demeanor than Iwata or Miyamoto.

Rather than the exquisitely refined 3 piece suits of Iwata, that looks like the first suit I bought at Goodwill when I was 18 for my first real job interview.  Nintendo needs a workaman to fix its glaring flaws so hopefully this choice will work.

Wish I waited for this deal.  I bought the Mario 3D World bundle last Christmas and other than beating the good game that is 3D World I've hardly touched my Wii U since outside of playing Gamefly games a little bit for a couple days.  Mario Kart 8 was pretty fun but I refuse to pay for DLC so this would have solved that issue.

I hate raining on parades but I feel some 104 style corrections are in order.

-Wii U and Xbox 360 have similar architecture making ports between the two easy, the main reason Wii U hasn't got 3rd party support is because of terrible software sales.

Only Iwata and maybe Tanaka thought the Wii U had a similar architecture to the 360 making ports easy.  In reality though they are similar in total power, the 360 is a CPU heavy and GPU light architecture while the Wii U is a CPU light and GPU heavy design.  Games designed for the 360 made heavy use of using the CPU to make up for the GPU's weakness, that doesn't transfer to the Wii U easily without a lot effort. 

The memory setup is also different with the 360 having a single half gig allocation at higher speed while the Wii U has 1 gig of slow memory and 32 MB of very fast memory set up, again though roughly equal, code doesn't transfer over without major effort.  Then there's the programming language with MS being as good as it gets and Nintendo being so bad developers didn't originally know they had to assign CPU cores which is something that was done automatically on the 360.

The poor software sales are indeed one reason 3rd parties quit, but if it were as simple as running the 360 code through a translator and doing a little bit of work we would still see those games regardless of sales (as we are seeing with indies where Unity is basically that).

DuckTales is a no brainer at that price.  I'll have to read up on that D&D game, and I don't know about RE Mercs.  I was really interested in it 4 years ago but the price, some of the gameplay vids, and the single save file turned me off from it.  Then that's what sales are for, I might try it for $7 whereas even $20 is too much.

Good to hear, for the first time in about 7 years Nintendo has a well priced handheld, even if it's the gimped little brother version.  It's sold better than I thought at 4 million or so (or at least 1/4 of 3DS sales since and where it's available).

Pretty cool idea, now I need to figure out what is actually coming to Nintendo platforms other than the few obvious titles.

Nearly 60 games have been nominated as of about an hour and a half ago.

I know, I didn't mean to sound like Nintendo has no games coming or anything, just I haven't had time for a while until recently to pay much attention to or play video games (funemployment ftw).  I sent in my list, a lot more cool games than I thought are coming.

Didn't fully read the part about the Mario 10, I was going to add another option would be to have levels that used steadily more advanced items and if you beat them it instantly unlocked all of the new items for that level.  Mario 10 sounds like that.

This! That's the sort of issue with the 10 Mario Challenge. You do get to see all these crazy cool things, but even when you bring that level into the editor (which you can do after you beat it), you don't have access to everything the level has to offer. For example, you unlock the Sound FX on day 6 or 7. A lot of those premade stages use Sound FX. You can do nothing with Sound FX until day 6 or 7. It's just frustrating. If I didn't know about the unlock system, I would have thought I was missing huge chunks of the game with no clue as to how to access it.

Is it just sound they keep blocked off?  I wouldn't be too annoyed about that but I can see how others would be.

I've owned all the Advanced Wars and regrettably sold all of them (I even had the compilation GBA cart).  I really want this but $8 for a single SNES/GBA game is getting harder and harder to justify, especially after Retro Replay.

I understand the not wanting to overwhelm people from the get go attitude, especially because a lot of gamers are not Mario experts anymore, but as always I don't see why this can't be an option.  They could do it either with Basic, Intermediate, and Advance sets and you could pick which you wanted or something like SMB-1, SMB-2, NSMB-1, NSMB-2, SMB3-1, SMB3-2, etc. where items correspond to the basic items in the first part and more advance ones in the latter part of those games.  Either way, I know I will get this game at some point and I barely touch my Wii U as is so I'll just go ahead and set it back 9 days right now.

My second favorite SNES game, I played the living heck out of it.  Ernst was my boy, and as I recall to win as Ernst you have to map every possible square it is possible to map and then take the girl to new south China city that appears.  Either way it is both infuriating and hilarious watching a newbie play a game at which you're an expert.  Also infuriating as a geography expert, you were in the White and then Kara Sea, not the North Sea, it was the Hanseatic League, and you were off Hokkaido not Honshu, bah.

Although James did one thing on his first try at a disadvantage that I was almost never able to do even with the advantage, win a duel.  I knew what the letters meant and how they applied to swords and armor but never figured out what the numbers meant.  I lost duels over and over, one of the reasons I never let my flagship get close to the enemy flagship (the ship with the ! not the 1).

Has anyone played this in either single or two-player?  With download play I can rope my wife into it so just wondering if it works as well.

Not having voice chat in games that clearly need it these days is just dumb, no matter what reason Nintendo gives. People get hit by cars every day due to terrible drivers. Does that mean that cars should be outlawed and nobody should have them? Nope. They're helpful when people are given the means to use them correctly, JUST LIKE VOICE CHAT.

Recent news says yes.

I really liked Mario Tennis so it was one of the few parts of the direct that I perked up, but then I remembered I can't do local multi anymore and as TYP notes I can easily fire up either the N64 or GCN version if need be.

Looks like fun but it makes the 7th-9th Zelda game this gen depending on how you count. 

I'm not interested in this game at all. The nice thing about Four Sword Anniversary is that it was free. Triforce Heroes is likely $40 and I'm still left with the conundrum of rounding up two other people for multiplayer because if this is anything like Four Swords, it's probably mediocre by yourself.

It's a shame. I really liked Link Between Worlds. Triforce Heroes just doesn't do it for me.

Seemed more like an eShop game to me but if it's a $40 full release than I'm out also.

It's nice to see this finally getting released. I was hoping Nintendo would call it "Spacebound" and Mother 3 "Timebound" though "Before Earthbound" and "After Earthbound" would have worked too.

Now they can bring Mother 3 over as Earthbound Endings and silence the clamor for Mother 4 once and for all.  Oh who am I kidding, silence it for most of the clamorers.

On the one hand I definitely agree that Wii Sports' time as a big deal has come and gone, but on the other if it doesn't cost much to make and is digital with varying payment options I can't see it being much of a risk.  Nintendo could toss a few million at it and sell it for $20 on the eshop (or break it up, charge by the day, make it f2p with 1 free hour a week, whatever).  Not hugest source of profit nor a game that caters to a major audience but then not every game has to or should be, especially when they're cheap to make.
