Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 106: I Killed Him! Did I Just Win?
« on: October 16, 2013, 09:23:16 PM »
I found the GTA V discussion interesting.  I'm a fan mainly of the 2D GTA's, yes we do exist (in however small numbers), but one of these days I'm going to try a 3D GTA.  As much as I think I would prefer the game style of the PS2 ones, I don't think I can go back to those graphics, presentation, and controls, so from everything I've heard it sounds like V is much more up my alley than IV.

I'm definitely interested.  On the plus side I'm glad to hear rupees matter again.  On the potential negative side, it could be a flop since if most dungeons can be solved with most items then most items won't matter.  Can't wait to see how it works out.

From the names, I was hoping that these would be translucent. What ever happened to translucent game systems? Was that just a fad from the 90's?
Same here, but it seems like it was a fad so most people today don't want to be reminded of it.  I likes what I likes regardless of "fads" so it annoys me in this case (but I can't be too upset since I win out more often with the I hates what I hates category).

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo 2DS Roundtable
« on: August 30, 2013, 11:46:18 PM »
My beef with the lack of a clamshell isn't the vulnerability of the screens but the size of the damn thing.  The 2DS just isn't pocket friendly.  The GBC and GBA didn't have clamshell designs but at least they were small.  This is more like the old brick Game Boy but that was big entirely because of technical limitations of the time.

The screens aren't protected AND the system isn't all that portable.  That's two big strikes against the 2DS design.
Given that the 3DS doesn't fit into the pockets of the target audience I don't think that is a strike, much less a big one, against the 2DS.  For much of the rest of the potential audience it would be a house handheld so it doesn't matter either.  If someone cares greatly about protected screens and pocket portability there remains the 3DS and 3DS XL.

IMO this is one of the few good moves I've seen Iwata make in many years.  One of my recent concerns was Iwata seemed to be fine with the 3DS being $170, or $200 for the good one, when Pokémon hits.  The most important thing for Nintendo's future is getting Pokémon, and extension a Nintendo dedicated handheld, into as many little hands of the next generation as possible.  While Pokémon still would have sold well, I do think this will much better see to that critical goal.

I've been interested in this game, but the only platform it is on I own is a Wii (well PC if it's on it but I don't play games like this on PC) and I don't play games much on my TV anymore.  Like Razorkid this is something I can now buy.

TalkBack / Re: Hype and 3DS eShop Games: A Fickle Mistress
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:11:46 PM »
Hmm, can't say I've been hyped Hyped HYPED for any eShop games.  At the moment I've only purchased Dillon, Crimson Shroud, and Liberation Maiden.  Didn't expect the world of any of them and didn't get it, which is fine.  Given other indie/download games I've played that's about the best I can expect (though Mutant Mudds was pretty good from what I played of it).

Mystery Manor has been $5 very well spent.

TalkBack / Re: Musings on the New StreetPass Games
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:57:37 PM »
Very nice read.  I've been wondering about these games but there doesn't seem much reliable info out there.  From the sounds of it I don't get enough street passes so I'll limit myself to Monster Manor until some new idea is cooked up to make the streetpass/play coin concept work better in most of the US.

I went with FFCC since I only have it and WSR, and I haven't really played any of FFCC (I got it for $5 new a couple years back and barely touched it) while I don't really look forward to a lengthy discussion of WSR.  Given it's now largely overlooked history as a major Wii game announced before launch, it's development hell, and then whatever the heck it turned into, it would be a great game I think to hear about in depth.  The other 2 sound like they would make a good retroactive discussion as well so come on anything but WSR.

Sweet, 7 near me (4 on a 1/4 mile stretch of the main road I take to the interstate), and almost 20 on the 20 mile square route I travel to work if you can pick them up on interstate.  Those new streetpass games are looking a lot more enticing.

TalkBack / Re: Club Nintendo 2013 Elite Status Gifts Announced
« on: July 17, 2013, 08:22:09 PM »
I've actually liked the Platinum gifts given out in prior years but this year is a big meh.  It's the first year I didn't get platinum (didn't get gold either) so my fears they would have SNES VC controllers or something cool were for naught.

as much as i loved using the boomerang with the stylus overall that control setup won't be missed...
Same, I liked how the stylus was used for some of the items but I really did not like them for the other 98% of the game (well, games).  Whatever excuse they needed to ditch them.

TalkBack / Re: Our Top 5 Games of 2013 (So Far)
« on: July 02, 2013, 09:09:47 PM »
So my top 5 is pretty easy, it would be:
  • LM2
LM2 is the only 2013 game I've bought so it doesn't require much thought for me.  Otherwise, from demoes, impressions, and my own gut feeling the list looks pretty reasonable.

You guys are high if you think Animal Crossing is a better game than Fire Emblem.
It wouldn't surprise me if I agreed with the rankings, but I need to find out what NWR smokes first apparently (well after playing both games of course).

Both those games are $8, Jarodea.
I know, I meant during the $5 sale. I like both of them but I was pretty much correct to not have spent $8 each.  I was hoping this would be on sale as well, but it looks neat enough so I'll wait.

I never owned a Game Gear, never knew anyone who did, and only played it in a store a couple of times so it kind of surprises me how many games were on it (oddly I had a Master System that was a hand me down but still).  It did sell ok I guess and portable games didn't need huge teams back then but still, that is a lot of Sonic games.  I'm thinking about picking up Triple Trouble since aside from being the best one apparently it was made for the system itself and isn't a port.

Sounds like a short but fun game, I was surprised to see the tanks are historically accurate (come to me my Panther love).  I was hoping it would be $5 like Liberation Maiden and Crimson Shroud, and like they should be in general, but it isn't so I'll wait.

TalkBack / Re: The NWR E3 2013 Awards
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:58:49 PM »
I don't really disagree much with the games on the list being there but it's still a pretty disappointing list to me.  Like Professor Clayton only Batman for the 3DS was a pleasant surprise.  Even more shocking that my favorite game from a Nintendo E3 was a 3rd party game, and even more shocking than that it was on a handheld.

I do like the Genesis Sonics but this sounds like something I would like as well.  I don't know about the 1 enemy on a screen at a time though.

TalkBack / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons Review Mini
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:39:33 PM »
  • Constantly needing to switch weapons interrupts flow of game
  • Lack of 3DS VC’s button remapping makes it difficult to play at times
  • These are my main problems with the GB/GBC Zelda games on the 3DS.  I would love to see a simple remake (in the Minish Cap style) that used the 4 buttons to improve the system in some manner.  Oh well, these are on my list for when I get my 3DS XL (the 3DS' start button is murder on my thumb).  I've played Ages but never really paid much attention to Seasons so good to hear the adventure isn't scrimped on.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Free-To-Play Game Is Steel Diver
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:26:44 PM »
Well, on the bright side, nobody will have to pay $40 for a Steel Diver game.

People paid $40 for this? I paid $3 and think it was too much.
I sort of did, Amazon had a ton of $20 off short-term credits when you bought a 3DS at launch (I think it was, I recall getting $60 off my purchase).  Given the games available at launch I ended up using an extra $20 credit on Steel Diver.  I traded it back to Amazon for $15 later, so doesn't really count I guess.
I haven't yet played Steel Diver, so I'm not really sure how it'll work with micro-transactions.
Should be easy enough, it's a time/score attack game with multiple subs with different abilities.  Make it F2P for say 1 or 2 subs  and 5 levels.  Sell 3 additional levels for $3, a different sub for $2, and various sub/weapon upgrades for $1 each (or maybe less).  No idea if that's how they will do it, but it's a simple extension of the game.

Also, this:
Quote
Another four player game, Operation: Sandbox, gave a giant tank with several hit points and one-shot kills to the player with the GamePad, and smaller tanks to everyone else. The giant tank has more cumbersome controls, with the two analog sticks assigned to their respective tank threads, while the smaller tanks are more agile and easier to control. The cannonballs that are fired actually roll on the ground, so you can use the slopes of the sand dunes to curve your shots.
needs to be an eShop game called Nintendo Combat.  I would buy it in a heartbeat for $8 or less.

It looks fun, and I'd love it,... if I knew enough people who gamed and could swing by for at least semi-regular party nights.
