Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 120: Positivity
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:27:53 PM »

I disagree with the idea that Sony is just offering up the same ole same ole while Nintendo is keeping it fresh.  The last few years seem to be the exact opposite actually.  I don't know, good to stay positive but there's being positive and realistic, and also being positive and drinking the Kool-Aid.  The segment seemed to veer a little too much towards the latter to me.

Also, the link for listener mail isn't there.
It's connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com. Good catch - I'll try to get the link working ASAP.

Also, when was that said? Was it the Nintendo Direct part? Did I say that? If you want to hear from someone talk about all of the things Sony does right and Nintendo does wrong, there are things I could say and there is a forum for it. This segment was not that forum. Good feedback though. I'll try to keep it a bit more restrained in the future.

Ah, thanks.

I'd have to relisten but I think you said it in the latter part of the segment.  I listen while doing accounting work so I could have misheard.  I do agree with a lot that was said, and while I believe it was Daan who went the furthest I understand he has very different tastes in games than I do.  It's not necessary to discuss what Sony does right (in detail at least, would be interesting from a "what can Nintendo learn" perspective) as I'm not too interested in them and yeah, I'm sure there are Sony fans online somewhere who do a great job at it.  Anyhoo, I did enjoy listening, just wanted to point out things seemed to go a little too far in a few regards.

And Scott is most right, best reason to love Nintendo is the SNES.  I'll drink the whole pitcher of Kool-Aid before I say other.

General Gaming / Re: Biggest Gaming Regrets
« on: February 10, 2014, 08:57:06 PM »
I'll break it down into a few different categories:

Worst game I bought for the stupidest reason - Hydlide.  The name is reminiscent of Hyrule and the boxart is similar to Dragon Warrior, two of my favorite games at the time.  Long story short, there went one of the 2 games per annum (at most) I received as a kid.

Game I really wish I didn't sell - Tetris DS.  The game was tetris without korobeiniki, therefor it wasn't tetris.  I traded it in for maybe $20.

The time I screwed up most falling for "hype" - Medal of Honor: Heroes.  I was mostly on the IGN insider forum at the  time and according to everyone it had the best controls and online for any Wii FPS.  Not so much on the first and maybe on the second but big deal.  Wasted $50 gift card.

I actually pre-ordered Moon, but found the controls somewhat unforgiving.  Hopefully this proves much better in that regard since I did like the game other than that.

I'm with Justin Baker on this one.  That's a sour note so I'll leave it at that.

2D Metroid of course.

More in what I dream would happen, and have since the Wii was announced, is a game that would fully realize the Battalion Wars/Full Spectrum Warrior concept.  I play as whatever soldier on the top screen but also issue orders to other soldiers (and jump to them in the BW style, or not in the FSW one) through the touch screen.  The Wii would have been a much better option but I'll take whatever I can on this front.

Dragon Quest VIII.  It's the oldest game in my backlog so the one I want to finish most.  I'm about halfway through (I think, I hope) but finding an hour+ block of time I can set aside to just play it is difficult.  I really enjoy it so it will remain as the top game in my backlog until I finish it.

I tried to play some DQIX after the show. Holy crap, that game looks terrible. Has the 3DS really spoiled me this much?

Also, my 2DS is now basically my DS Lite.

I've noticed the same thing of late.  I think for me it's the same reason I could never get into the Playstation after getting an N64, the pixels and textures jump all over the place compared to the 3DS.  The cause is different iirc (PS1 didn't have a z-buffer and the method of texture mapping) but the result is the same.

I hope you guys give the Bravely Default demo another chance.  Once I realized a couple of battles in that you need to go into BP deficit right away with your party to win made it much easier to manage.  The town management aspect is like streetpass Actraiser and I found the graphics, music, and job system a lot of fun.

Although I really like the BP system in major battles, it does annoy me some in smaller ones.  Either I do 2 or 3 rounds, or I brave > brave > brave > brave > attack > attack > attack > attack > brave > brave...  Auto battle or auto bravel all/ attack all would be greatly appreciated.

I'm loving the Bravely Default demo, but I think I'm going to stop playing it until the game comes out.  Even though it is different than the main game I don't like the feeling of finishing a demo desirous to play the game and then having to wait months.

I'd give it a go for free, but not something I'd spend more than $2 to get.

This needs to be on the Wii U.

Given the resolution of the 3DS this does seem like something that should be on the Wii U at a minimum.

Do want.  Bah, why did I constantly waste coins here or there just because I had them and "nothing good is coming anyways".  I knew something would eventually, damn you shirt, give me back my coins.

Will have to get this as I never played it, despite wanting to, and it is one of the few SNES games my fiancé recalls playing and liking (she went NES/GB to Wii/DS with little in between for the most part).

I never played the game but do recall salivating over the pictures and commercials of it at the time (along with Pit Fighter, despite playing it, for some reason).  From everything I've heard, seen, and read about it I think I and it will be best served remaining there.

I just have to pipe in and say that Starship Defense is an incredibly fun and addictive game even though it doesn't look like it.

Missed this but wanted to agree.  Starship Defense is the one game I've gotten so far for free and it is pretty great.  I'm not a fan of tower defense games usually but something about it clicked with me.

Bleh, yet another month where the only games I want I already own.

"what more do you want!?"
A Virtual Console that gives some indication that Nintendo is actually trying?
This, sadly.  Also, it would be nice if the retail games weren't so stacked.  Otherwise, not too bad overall I guess.

Mount Vesuvius is new. Also, the music is better than the moon. Yeah, even the 8-bit remix.

Yeah, that's right.

Bring on the hate notes. I'm not trollin', just a difference of opinion, bro.  :cool;
I can't speak to the music on Mt. Vesuvius (don't have the game) but I've never considered the moon level music to be that great, not bad certainly but only pretty good at best.  I kind of liked thinking I was the only person who thought that, cooler to be the one man standing for truth athwart the erroneous masses.  Oh well.

I don't play Phoenix Wright games but I enjoyed the AA5 discussion.  My fiancé loves them and will be playing it so it's nice to be able to discuss it with her halfway informed at least.

Not counting a few small download purchases, Luigi's Mansion 2 whenever it came out.  Next purchase will be Zelda: ALbW

General Gaming / Re: What are you playing?

This thread started in May, well it's not too hard to sum up the games I've played since then (bold are games I am currently playing):
  • Find Mii 2
  • The mansion mii game
  • Luigi's Mansion 2
  • Gunman Clive
  • Wario Land 3
  • Fire Emblem sacred stones or whatever
The only one I've beaten is Gunman Clive.

100% for Zelda atm, sweetness.  Well I'm leaving on the high note.
Anyhoo, I didn't just go with Zelda since I don't have a Wii U, I did so because it's a remake/sequel/whatever to my favorite game of all time.  I don't expect it to surpass that, but if it comes reasonably close and I'll be very very happy this holiday season.

I am tempted to get this since Watchdogs is delayed. I don't know if I can bring myself to spend $50 for it though.
Wait for the inevitable price collapse.  I will likely pick it up when it does despite not getting a Wii U anytime soon.  I expect it to be shipped in small enough numbers such that it might be difficult to find when I do pick up a Wii U (but not so small there isn't some kind of price drop).

174
I don't know how well it would work since it hasn't been tried, but in a similar vein I would like to see what old RPG's like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Lufia would look if you played them in a style similar to Xenoblade.  Might not work, might require too much nostalgia to work, I don't know.
Oh man, i love Caesar III so much. So much.

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom from the same developer was just as good. It gives player more control over distribution of goods by adding signposts, but at the same time it also lost some of that geometrical simplicity and beauty that Caesar III had. In CIII, you had zero control how your agents will move and so you had to design your entire future city layout with their roots in mind.

I'd pay high dollar for any kind of city building simulation game on Wii U. I think Tilted Mill is still around...
The first thing I thought when seeing the gamepad was "get SimCity on this system, unhindered view on TV and doing the work on the gamepad.  I'd buy a Wii U for that alone".  We won't get it since EA and given what EA has done to SimCity I'm not sure I want it on Wii U anyways.
There's no reason Faxanadu couldn't see a successful implementation in 3D.

I would f***ing love to see Faxanadu resurrected. That game was great. As you say though, it would change the game quite drastically. I think I would prefer to simply have a downloadable 2D Faxanadu with really high res art. That would be so awesome.
I would love love love to see a Faxanadu 2D remake.  That doesn't really count for a Kid Icarus treatment though.  I'm sure it could make the transition to 3D ala Metroid regardless, but I'm not holding my breath.

175
A couple of ideas that spring to mind are Zelda II and Faxanadu.  To give either a Kid Icarus (or Metroid Prime) mold would turn them into quite different games.  Zelda II would become a different take on Ocarina of Time in effect.  There's no reason Faxanadu couldn't see a successful implementation in 3D.  Looking through a list of NES games, I would want most of the games I'd like to see updated, Zelda II, remain 2D so I don't think they really count.

One game I would love to see get this treatment is L'Empreur, a game where you play as low ranking Napoleon and then gain abilities and more options as you gain victories.  You start commanding a single army and, hopefully, end commanding an empire.  I have always wanted a game where you start off a junior officer commanding soldiers like Battalion Wars, rise to commanding a battlefield like Total War, and the running a province/commanding an army like Caesar II, on up to running an empire like Europa Universalis.  The Wii U would offer some great options, but it will never happen much less on the Wii U.
