TalkBack / Re: Game Boy Turns 25: A Look Back
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:38:39 PM »
I never owned a Gameboy, so my sole experience comes from a few months I borrowed a friend of my brother's Gameboy for a few months during which my mother used Betty Crocker UPC's to get SML2 for free. Tetris came with the loaner and I played SML at a cousin's which wraps up my portable gaming experience prior to the GBA (outside of store demo units where I was able to enjoy the massiveness and horrific view range/ghosting of the Game Gear and the special horror that was the Virtual Boy).

TalkBack / Re: Top 10 3DS Playtimes
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:47:35 PM »
My list is pretty pathetic for someone who got a 3DS at launch, but it came out when post-college life and working 2 jobs began to hit hard and the original 3DS caused my hands to intensely hurt after 15-20 min of playing.  I wouldn't be surprised if I'm about to have played my XL more in the 4 months I've had it than I did my 3DS in the 33 months.

560 points and forever waiting for something worth spending to points on for the 3DS.

Every month; garbage, garbage, and more garbage.
Hey now, it isn't all garbage, I just happen to own everything that isn't is my problem.  Except for Starship Defense of course.

« on: April 07, 2014, 08:13:58 PM »
Can't really say much since I haven't played too many games like this, but the review and score seem right to me.  It strikes me as an average game of the genre so unless you really like it or find some other reason to give it a go (cats) then it's not worth the $5.  Or put more succinctly, what the review said.

TalkBack / Re: GBA Wii U Virtual Console Worldwide Line-Ups Revealed
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:53:21 AM »
$8 for gba games is a bit too rich for my blood.  Oh well, I already own most of the gba games I care about and don't really see the point of getting them on the Wii U since I have a gba, ds lite, gcn game boy player, and ambassador games.

That being sais, it is a good roll out line up.

Honestly, it's waking up one morning, checking Twitter and finding out about the Ambassador program. I think I did an octuple-take.
Try to think of something else, but basically this.  I haven't really touched the NES games but the GBA group includes a lot of gems, several of which I never played.

« on: March 29, 2014, 08:35:09 AM »
I only own 10 retail games and 5 eShop games for my 3DS, but most of the "greats" I don't own don't interest me much and wouldn't make my top 10 (AC:NL is about all, but I'm not sure since the formula change is not as significant as it needs to be).  Anyhoo,

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Resident Evil Revelaitons
  • Zelda 64 3D
  • Luigi's Mansion 2
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Pilotwings Resort
  • Gunman Clive
  • Lego Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Zelda A Link between Worlds
  • Dillon's Rolling Western
It's really a top 5 list.

Games I own or owned that didn't make the list for comparison:
  • Ghost Recon Shadow Warriors (would be #6 above if not for the game breaking crashing)
  • Professor Layton something or another
  • Liberation Maiden
  • Bugs vs Tanks
  • Crimson Shroud (hey, what do you know Nintendo, sales work!)
  • SSFIV
  • Ridge Racer
  • Both Steel Divers

Went with MKWii since it is only game I still own.  Would have gone with Days of Ruin if I still owned it.

TalkBack / Re: Skater Cat Coming to 3DS Next Week
« on: March 21, 2014, 01:51:35 PM »
Looks like a worthless flash game, but... cats.  It will take all my being not to buy this game since I buy anything with cats in it.
I really apologise for this comment.  I was trying to be cute while making the point that I'll buy any game starring a cat.  Doing that when exhausted at the end of  the day is not advisable. The game does look nice watching the trailer on the facebook page (more so compared to my non-existent 3DS game).   Im not an endless runner but my fiance is, so for a fiver ill give the game a go.

TalkBack / Re: Why Wii U Needs Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:40:57 PM »
I'd be even happier if Nintendo would just pay Konami to make or localize MLB Power Pros again.  I own all 3 NA releases and it is by far my favorite baseball series.

Wait, what?  There is a third Power Pros game?  I have Power Pros and 2008 for the Wii, are you talking about the DS game?

Back on point, anything is going to start as a drop in the bucket.  I'd just be happy if Nintendo did something because it would acknowledge a problem exists and then there may be a point in the future where changes/momentum put Nintendo in a point where they are competitive again.  Right now, I have little hope for Nintendo's future consoles on a competitive front.  It used to be hyperbole to say you only buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games.  Now it's reality.

Yeah, I mean the DS MLB Power Pros, which I own.  It has all the gameplay fun of the console versions just not anything other than single game or small tourney play.  Turned out to be worth it for the multiplayer single cart download fun.

On point, I agree fully, babies and badly injured people need to start somewhere even if it is a single step.  I'd be more than happy to hear any serious talk from Iwata that he is moving in the proper direction, but so far it seems he just wants to chase the ephemeral DS/Wii casuals into QoL rather than taking a serious thought at what needs to be done to survive in the video game industry long term.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 125: I've Got to Run
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:47:03 PM »
When it comes to listener mail, I know you guys don't always (or almost always) have 4 people on for a segment like RFN, but for weeks when there are only 3 or especially 2 is it possible to flesh out the segment with perhaps written responses from a few other regulars?  I know whoever is on couldn't speak for them, but it could give those on more ideas to bounce around or perhaps more on which to elaborate.  It's not comparable of course, but this weeks listener segment was pretty short (which with 2 people is entirely expected).  Or maybe a summary of a short IM discussion, I'm not sure what is workable for you guys or for a podcast, but something like that.

Anyways, great show as usual and thanks for the time and effort it takes to produce.

I'd say SMB DX is an easy drop.  The only reason compelling me to say Metroid Prime Hunters should stay is just due to the multiplayer.  It wasn't very good multiplayer so it's not a terribly good reason to keep it in.  The only other game that strikes me as different enough from the rest is Mother 3, which is unplayable on a Nintendo system to 98% or more outside of Japan (that's a lot more people prevented from playing than lefties who couldn't play MPH).

TalkBack / Re: Why Wii U Needs Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:05:24 PM »
I agree for the reason given, but also because I was actually really hyped about Pennant Chase Baseball back in the day.  I'd be even happier if Nintendo would just pay Konami to make or localize MLB Power Pros again.  I own all 3 NA releases and it is by far my favorite baseball series.  I know that wouldn't do much, the games sold terribly if I'm not mistaken, and given their art style I don't think they ever would.  Oh well, just my own selfish desire.

I think this is like looking at someone with all their limbs broken and focusing on a small cut on their forehead.  Yeah the Wii U needs sports games but it also needs a whole bunch of genres.  If Nintendo had decent third party support then this wouldn't be an issue.  All major sports titles, as well as most major third party games period, would be on their console.

What Nintendo needs is a console that the general public wants to buy and third parties want to support.  The Wii U fails on both.  A baseball game is a drop in the bucket in comparison.  They fix the big picture stuff and the lesser problems like a lack of sports games will correct themselves.

If Nintendo was to focus on filling a specific genre gap I think FPS would make much more sense.  Nintendo being without that genre is like a console from the 8 and 16 bit eras not having sidescrolling platformers.  I would be in favour of Nintendo making more of an effort (and by that I mean any effort at all) to target specific genre gaps and fill them.  That would be much better than their "focus on platformers and ignore all else" approach they've seemingly taken on with the Wii U.  I think that would be a good step to recovery and something to do to tend the fort until third parties get back.  But this won't matter on the Wii U.  It's one of the many things to do with the Wii U successor.

That's pretty much the problem with any discussion of the Wii U's problems, there are so very many that any one is but a drop in the bucket.  It also doesn't help that, as you note, any real solutions will only affect the Wii U's successor given that "solutions" for the Wii U would have needed to have been started 3-5 years ago.

I agree that FPS' are probably a better route to go but even they amount to only a few drops in the bucket, they really need a total rehaul at all levels.  Anyhoo, I get the feeling that this is all whistling past the graveyard at this point.

A pretty lackluster month for anything not called PS4 or XBOne.  Those 3DS sales in particular are alarming, hopefully Nintendo will eventually realize the $200 handheld market only briefly existed (the DSi has turned out to be worse for Nintendo that I ever imagined, sending Iwata hurtling off in the wrong direction just as the market raced off in another).

Are you saying actually HAVING new Wii U software in February this time increased Wii U software sales compared to last year's complete no-show? Man, who'd have thought?  ::)
Iwata's grand scheme revealed, no new games means next year's paltry sales look amazing.

Nice number for Bravely Default, glad to see.

Considering the smaller number of days for DKCTF, those might be nice numbers as well. Hope it keeps it up next month.
Agree with BD, but too early to say for DKCTF other than they aren't obviously great or terrible.  Even looking at past performance it difficult given the different install bases between Wii and Wii U, different demographics, starkly different software situations, different release times, and simply too few games to directly compare for a baseline.  We'll get a better idea in a few months.

A clear indication that Nintendo needs to throw as many of their first party titles they can muster to gain Wii U sales. The release of a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, Star Tropics, Advanced Wars, Fire Emblem, etc, would push the Wii U further to surpassing the Gamecube in sales.
Clearly, and to do so they need to expand, buy new developers, and make partnerships with others... in 2009.  I wonder if GCN sales are even possible at this point, the GCN had a pretty nice mid-life revival (outsold the PS2 a few months in NA iirc) but then again it died shortly thereafter.  Hey, there's one way Nintendo can boost the Wii U, drop it to $100 (or was it $150), with a choice of 4 or 5 great games people would actually want, and do it right before Mario Kart comes out.

Finally!  They have a game that I neither already own and actually want.  I've always been a big Kid Icarus fan but never had a GB.

I'm not sure what Samus would be. Maybe an Elf/Archer since she uses a lot of ranged attacks?

Easy, Selkie from the FFCC series.  She's extremely acrobatic and fast, and they use ranged weapons.  She kind of looks the part as well.

Ok, learned nothing about the game from that.

Where's my Nyxquest sequel and Lost Winds threequel? Those games would kick ass on the Gamepad.

Hopefully learning how to make a game that lasts more than an hour.

Uggh, Skate or Die! this is not.  They should try to ape the cover of that more though I think.

TalkBack / Re: Retro Studios has Started Work on Mystery Project
« on: March 05, 2014, 09:17:49 PM »
Well, given how Iwata has been using Retro I would say they are working on Donkey Land Returns for the 3DS while the second team is laying the ground work for Donkey Kong Country Returns 3: Kranky Kongs Krazy Kapers in Kremling Kingdom on the Wii U (or Wii V [as James would say]).

Its hard to be excited about Retro's Next project.  Fool me ones shame on you, Fools me twice shame on me.

Ditto.  I won't ignore the announcement, but Retro has a ways to go re-earn my interest and hype enthusiasm.
