General Gaming / Re: "Hardcore", "mature", "casual", "kiddy"
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:55:45 AM »
"Remember last gen when people called Nintendo games ""  LOL where have you been?  Sega was calling nintendo kiddie since the NES days :0.

Mature/Hardcore has to deal with "content" more than blood and guts.  Sometimes it's a deeper story other times it might be more complex gameplay.

Nintendo has some more "core" games but usually NOA doesn't bother bringing them stateside, Fire Emblem series, Advance Wars, ect.

Kiddie games are usually simple games that anyone can play, Lego series for example, very kiddie because you can die and just respawn as much as you want.

No no, I was asking do the terms "mature" and "hardcore" mean the same thing? Do the terms "casual" and "kiddy" mean the same thing?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Cave Story DSiWare being remade as an eShop game
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:52:48 AM »
You do realize that they source this site? And that they got it wrong-- it's not a DSiWare remake, if anything, it's a port of Cave Story+ (Steam).

You know there's only one guy working on GoNintendo: Kevin Cassidy (Rawmeat Cowboy / RMC). He writes all the articles and posts all the stories that people send in.

Anyways, thanks for the updated info. And the DSiWare version might still be removed from the eShop, since there's no point in having 2 Cave Story games on the eShop.

Is anyone here a fan of drawing and animation? I've loved studying animation and drawing since I first saw Looney Tunes as a young kid.

On a side note:
Do comic book studios outsource their work to overseas artists the way animation studios outsource animation to Korea?

Nintendo Gaming / Cave Story being remade AGAIN as an eShop game
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:19:57 AM »
According to an article posted on GoNintendo, a recent issue of Nintendo Power has details on yet another remake of Cave Story.

Cave Story is being remade for the 3DS eShop, with added 3D layers, increased resolution to fill up the 3DS' screen, and extra modes / playable characters. The DSiWare game may be pulled from the eShop once the new game is released.

Nintendo registered a domain name for "Super Mario 4" a few weeks ago, and I feel that that is going to be the Wii U game. The last numbered Super Mario Bros. game appeared on a console, so why not?

I hope Mario fans don't complain about wonky physics and things like "HIS HAIR SHOULD BE BLACK LIKE IN SUPER MARIO BROS. 3/SUPER MARIO WORLD!!!"

But Super Mario World is subtitled "Super Mario Bros. 4" in Japan, so if you don't count the NSMB games, this "Super Mario 4" would actually be Super Mario Bros. 5.

The game has been enjoyable but don't feel it's as amazing as others feel. I'd still recommend it but I feel the Bowser fights were really cheap and didn't like them at all. The only one that was at all enjoyable for me was the last fight in world 8.

Well, obviously that last fight ridiculously epic, possibly the best Bowser fight in Mario history.   But if you get down to it, none of the Bowser fights before that was REALLY against Bowser, were they?  :-)

But seriously, was your problem with them the way they ended (jump on the black button) or that they were more about evasion than combat?  Though they were basically the same (avoid mouth fire, jump over the bowser rights, don't get hit by the tail, run under him when he jumps), the level design I think forced you to tackle him differently.

I think the highlight of those Castle levels were more getting to Bowser than the fight, maybe that is what you mean.  Because those parts were awesome, with some really challenging level design.

And the ships!   I'm guess I'm the only one who loved every single ship level.   Those were fantastically fun.   Especially the Special World versions.

To be fair, the boss fights in most Super Mario games have been pretty easy. Avoid the enemy's attacks, jump on their head. Do this 2 more times and the boss is dead.

The only Mario games that really gave me a challenge were Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. (damn you Fiery Petey Piranha and Fiery Gobblegut, and DAMN YOU BOULDERGIEST DAREVEVIL RUN!)

Youtube TV App coming to Wii U?

makes sense.

Didn't we basically see that during the E3 presentation?

Yes. There was even an adorable parrot singing the Super Mario Bros. theme!

Fixed.

Unless, Sakurai is a big Bomberman fan...or someone on his team is.  I am quite depressed about the fate of Bomberman actually...it was a great series, that should of and could of always been more.

I dunno why someone didn't make a Bomberman Party game...that took different multiplayer vs modes that Bomberman could have and create fun mini games around it.  5-6 simple and fun verse modes would have made a killer download game.

Ever play Bomberman Blitz on DSiWare? It's kind of like what you're referring to, with the bonus of online multiplayer.

Or, you know... it could have communication abilities with NSMBWiiU, which would drive the interest up for the latter.

I mean, I'm not really that upset with this announcement, on second thought. Whenever Nintendo releases a sequel, it's always good in some way. Galaxy 2 is leaps and bounds better than the first, and I think they'll add some cool stuff to this game, too.

NSMB Wii was a sequel to NSMB DS, and they improved upon that game in every way (graphics, multiplayer, level design, sound design, bringing back the Koopalings, etc.). So I have my hopes up for NSMB 2 (or as I call it, the actual NSMB 3).

There's no reason you can't own a PS3 and a 360. I admit there is a lot of over lap between the two and if you don't have a lot of money to throw around it probably makes more sense to just own one or the other, but there are some exclusives you will end up missing out on by only having one.

Money, my dear friend. I already have a hard enough time keeping up with the Wii, 3DS and PS3.

Plus I don't really have the time or patience to handle 3 different consoles and all the games I have.

Ken Kutaragi left (or fled or whatever) Sony soon after the PS3 launched. The PS4 will be Sony's first console without Kutaragi and his input, but we can already see from the Vita that whoever is now pulling the strings over at Sony seems to have the same mentality that power is more important than affordability.

That quote from Kaz Hirai from 2009 (which was only 3 years ago) is consistent with what we are seeing from the Vita, so it seems not at all unlikely that the PS4 will be a similarly powerful and expensive piece of hardware which will struggle to see adoption by both consumers and developers alike until price drops take effect.

The board of directors actually "promoted" Kutaragi after the PS3 launched, essentially taking him away from his position of overseeing PlayStation hardware development.

Pirating, eh? Do you pirate your games and movies too?  :@

Remember when people used to call Nintendo games "kiddy", and PS2 / Xbox games were called "mature"?

When the Wii came out, people started calling Nintendo games "casual", and PS3 / Xbox 360 games were called "hardcore".

Do the terms "hardcore" and "mature" mean the same thing?

These past few months I've been in the mood to listen to some video game music, so I went on iTunes and bought the Sonic Colors, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception soundtracks.

I'm glad that publishers are uploading their game soundtracks on iTunes, though I wish they'd also put them on the Android Market (Google Play) for people who don't own iOS devices.

What video game soundtracks do you have?

If these guys are spending all their time hacking and modifying Brawl to suit their needs, then why don't they just utilize their talents better and open up their own game studio and create a game from scratch?

What I'm wondering is why do so many people dislike the New Super Mario Bros. games? The art style isn't that bad. They basically took the 2D art and revamped it with 3D-ish models.

And the gameplay is exactly the same as any 2D Mario game. You run and jump through colorful levels, collecting coins, stomping baddies, etc.

I still play NSMB Wii and NSMB DS often, and I love revisiting my favorite levels time and time again.

You need a PS3 to download PSP & PS1 games on the Vita? So the millions of people who don't have PS3's are left out?

Yep, though apparently PS1 games aren't transferable at all at the moment. Many PSP games require a PS3 to install on a Vita (such as Valkyria Chronicles 2 and its DLC, which I just transferred over but aren't in the store or downloadable on Vita), though looking at the grand unofficial list fewer than I thought.  When you go to your download list, these games show up as "Can't be downloaded to a Vita" where the "download" button is usually located when viewed on a Vita.  And they don't appear in the Vita version of the PS Store at all as games that can be purchased.  To play these games, you HAVE to download them first to your PS3, leave them on the XMB in "bubble" form, hook your Vita up to your PS3 through its USB power cable, and then use the Vita to transfer the files through its content management program.

Oh yeah, and while you're transferring these files, the Vita is not drawing power from the PS3 so you could conceivably run out of battery power doing this.  I've only transferred a few files at a time and I keep my Vita hooked up to its charger at nearly all times so I haven't run into that problem yet, but it's truly a brilliant situation Sony's created here.

EDIT:  OK, it seems I need to make a major correction here, and it actually makes the situation worse.  Starting tomorrow, I'm going on vacation with my family for a week, so I thought while I was still up and not doing much that I would transfer my Resistance Retribution PSP game over to my Vita instead of Dissidia 012.  After all, I'd already transferred my original save for the game over yesterday.  I thought Dissidia was one of the locked games as well, but apparently you can download that from the store.  Apparently, that's not going to happen, because Resistance (one of the games you can't download to the Vita) also can't be transferred through the content manager at the moment.  I don't know if the PS1 games can, as I don't have any in "bubble" form at the moment.  So apparently, if you can't download them to your Vita natively, it doesn't look like you can transfer them either.

Reading up on the issue, it does look like there are games that you can only transfer to your Vita through a PS3, but my "locked" games do not seem to be on the extended list as compatible games.  If Sony has any sense, they're making those remaining "locked" games work on Vita, especially the 1st party stuff like Resistance.

So despite Sony's assurances that "all your old PSP digital software will be playable from Day 1 on Vita", that is not the case at all.  You can't even work around the Vita's stubborn download refusals.  Oh joy.  Damn, I really wanted to play Resistance Retribution on vacation now that I can play it with the right analog stick as the camera...  :(

Good God, it's like Sony hasn't learned anything from their past mistakes. Wow. So, hypothetically speaking, if I have PS1 games installed on my PS3, I can't transfer them to the Vita unless they're in "bubble" form (meaning I'd have to redownload them again)?

Uncharted is about the only exclusive game that's making me keep my PS3. If Uncharted was a multiplatform game (the IP not owned by Sony), I'd sell my PS3 immediately and buy an Xbox 360 instead.

To use a Mario example, Super Mario Galaxy has a completely different look than Super Mario 3D Land.

What? When I played Super Mario 3D Land, it felt like a scaled-down version of Mario Galaxy 2. It reuses many of the same assets and features (character models, textures, graphics engine, "Cosmic Mario" races, music, sound effects, etc.). It's basically Mario Galaxy 2 without the gravity gimmicks.

The PS Store issues, though, with much if not most PSP and PS1 software requiring a PS3 to download to the Vita is ridiculous.

You need a PS3 to download PSP & PS1 games on the Vita? So the millions of people who don't have PS3's are left out?

That would be like Nintendo requiring us to have a DSi to download DSiWare on the 3DS.

Maybe it isn't New Super Mario Bros. Mii anymore but Super Mario Bros. 4 by Good Feel.

I don't know if this is crazier in the wishful thinking department, but perhaps New Super Mario Bros. Mii is smaller game than expected and is loaded on to every Wii U as the launch period pack-in. Maybe there could be some connectivity between New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Mii as well.

Super Mario World is Super Mario Bros. 4 (in Japan, it has "Super Mario Bros. 4" as a subtitle).

Technically, that would make NSMB DS "Super Mario Bros. 5", and NSMB Wii "Super Mario Bros. 6". That would mean NSMB 2 (3DS) is "Super Mario Bros. 7".

I just want to point out Uncharted 1 isn't a bad game. You never hear people talking about that one, though.

I have the Uncharted 1 & 2 Dual Pack. I beat Uncharted 1, and enjoyed it, but Uncharted 2 is better in every way. The graphics, story, voice acting, controls, music, sound design, cinematic presentation are all greatly improved.

I mean really, just look at how the holiday season would go this year if Nintendo released both games.  One 2D Mario game for $40 on a $170 system, while another ones $50 on a $300 system.

I'd love to know where you got those prices from. The Wii U Mario game could be downloadable for all we know.

I can never get into hacks like that when it isn't the official game. If I really loved it and got any good at it, I would always feel empty that in an official tourny it wouldn't play like that.

Agreed. I don't really care about hacking games and hardware. It's completely pointless and ruins the developers' ambition when creating the game.
