Well I'm glad I waited because I got the Mario bundle, which is a really good value. Hopefully Nintendo also has bundles with Mario Kart 8 and/or Smash Bros. That would definitely sell more consoles.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Wii U and I think off-TV play is the coolest thing Nintendo has ever done... But I do wish 3rd-party publishers would at least try to make something decent for the console and give Nintendo a chance. It's great that we got Batman and Assassin's Creed games, but two major franchises isn't enough to compete with the other systems.

The GamePad has been sorely underutilized. Inventory management and a persistent map is great, but the GamePad can offer much more to games. It seems even Nintendo doesn't know what to do with it.

Nintendo needs to be more ambitious with their game development. Stop sitting on games for half a year and then suddenly reveal them to no hype. Put Wii and GameCube games on the Virtual Console, and bring back those Sega consoles as well (including Dreamcast and Saturn). Give us more HD remakes of GameCube and Wii games (Metroid Prime Trilogy and Luigi's Mansion?). They need to go all out with their mobile apps; put Miiverse, eShop, Mii Maker, etc. on mobile devices to spread the word about your products.

Now that the Wii U is essentially failing in all aspects do you regret getting one?

I'm still shocked that Nintendo still hasn't unified the 3DS and Wii U friends lists. We have Nintendo Network IDs on both consoles yet the friends lists are still seperate?

Nintendo is doing a terrible job promoting their online service. If they want online games to be more popular on their consoles they need to market Nintendo Network as a free alternative to Xbox Live and PSN.

If games and apps can be 99 cents why can't movies and books be priced the same?

Most mobile apps are 99 cents, so will digital books and movies ever get that cheap to better compete?

There is already a Pokedex app, so now all they need is a Miiverse and eShop app. A Mii Maker app wouldn't work because Miis are tied to the console, not the Nintendo Network account. They need to make money with this endeavor, so charging $2 per app is reasonable. Digital books and movies cost more than that, so why should mobile games be cheaper?

But what Nintendo really needs to do is unify the friend lists between the Wii U and 3DS. Combining the eShop accounts is a good start, but why aren't the friends lists unified too?

To paraphrase Chris Kohler, saying Nintendo should get a little bit into mobile gaming is like suggesting someone get a little bit pregnant. Going down that road is the first step toward leaving the hardware business, and they couldn't go back.

Why can't Nintendo do both mobile games and their own hardware/software? Microsoft makes games for mobile and Xbox, and even Sony is starting to make games for mobile devices.

General Gaming / Re: What is your most recent gaming purchase?
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:44:28 PM »
I bought a Wii U about a week ago (the Mario bundle). I recently bought the following games:

- Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
- Super Mario 3D World
- Batman: Arkham Origins
- Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
- Sonic Lost World (very mediocre, going to sell it and get Sonic Colors instead)

My next games will be Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Watch_Dogs (gotta love that Ubisoft support).

As long as the Wii U keeps getting support from Ubisoft, Activision, and WB Games then I don't care about the other developers who shun it. Activision is a given because they put their games on everything.

Sega themselves don't make Pachinko machines. Their parent company Sammy does. Sega just makes video games and arcade games.

Nintendo making mobile games wouldn't take away resources from Wii U or 3DS development. They could just set aside a small 5-man team to make mobile games.

General Gaming / Glitched Out! The Official Glitches and Bugs Thread
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:28:45 PM »
So I've been hearing about all the glitches that plague Arkham Origins. I haven't encountered anything serious until recently. I'm doing one of the final missions where you have to disarm the bombs that Firefly placed on the bridge. I jumped into a group of thugs and suddenly I can't attack. Batman just walks around with his arms at his sides while the thugs circle him, but they don't attack either.

Anyone encounter this glitch? What crazy glitches have you found in games?

Who said anything about Nintendo going mobile only? I was talking about them making mobile games as a side project while they continue to focus on their consoles. They could make some extra cash that way because many people would gladly buy Nintendo games on smartphones / tablets. It worked for Sega and their Sonic games.

Instead of simply porting classic Mario and Zelda games to mobile devices, I was thinking Nintendo could make a minigame collection (look at Super Mario 64 DS and the various Kirby games for examples). Game & Watch titles would also work well on mobile devices because those games are simple and easy to play.

Instead of complaining about what we didn't get like we're ungrateful children, how about we discuss the positive aspects of the Wii U?

Wind Waker HD sold me on the concept of the GamePad. It's use for inventory management and a permanent map display is brilliant. And I love off-TV play, it's such a seamless transition to go from the TV to the GamePad screen.

Metroid Prime would be perfect for the GamePad because you could use it as a Scan Visor (and map display). I really hope Nintendo released Metroid Prime Trilogy HD on the Wii U, and don't make it limited edition this time...

Forking over more control to NOA and NOE is a good thing, probably a great thing.  I'm hoping  both are given the budget to, like Ceric said, run studios based in those regions to develop the games that appeal to those players.  Everybody talks about how Nintendo needs to follow certain trends and "get with the times", well here's one that's a bit forgotten: western gamers LOVE FPSes.  Nintendo has no FPS franchise in the umbrella currently; Sony and MS both do.  Miyamoto once said he could make Halo.  Well, maybe he should or someone at Nintendo.

Miyamoto talks out of his ass a lot of the time because he has a huge ego and thinks he can do better than almost every other developer.

"You guys like Halo? Well I could make that too! I'll show you!"

The Wii U only has 2GB of RAM that's split between the OS and games. I highly doubt the Wii U can do multitasking on the level of Xbox One. Smartphones / tablets can barely do it with 1GB of RAM.

I have plenty of ideas.

- Mario auto-runner where the objective is to collect the most coins before you reach the goal.

- Kirby game where the objective is to inhale as many enemies as possible within the time limit, with each enemy wave getting more difficult to swallow (bombs get in the way).

- Zelda game where the objective is to defeat enemies in a manner similar to Infinity Blade (attack, dodge, attack).

Or Nintendo could simply port a bunch of minigames to mobile devices. Super Mario 64 DS had plenty of them, as do many Kirby games.

As long as the Wii U gets games like Assassins Creed, Batman, and Call of duty, then I don't care about the other third-party companies supporting it.

Ubisoft, WB Games, and Activision have all supported the Wii U to a variable extent. I'm positive it will always get Ass Creed and Call of Duty simply because those games are released on everything to bring in the most profit.

Well in Square Enix's case, Final Fantasy offers a lot more depth than a simple casual minigame.

And I brought up music because full albums cost a lot more than a mobile game, yet they only give you an hours worth of content. So music costs more but offers you less.

This is why mobile games are ruining the value proposition of gaming as a whole. Pretty soon people will expect books and movies to be that cheap, when economically it just isn't feasible. A $5 game isn't bad at all considering digital books and movies cost more.

Anyways... Back to the Wii U discission. I highly doubt Nintendo will release a revision of the Wii U this early in the console's life cycle. They will most likely try to improve its sales with more bundles.

Also, the GamePad is an essential feature of the system. If they make it an optional accessory, barely any of the games would be playable, and no one would buy the GamePad because it would be too expensive. That would be like Nintendo removing the Wii Remote from the Wii SKU.

Also, we have no idea what Nintendo has planned for the rest of the year (summer onwards). They always save their big announcements for E3 or a similar trade show. People act like the only games Nintendo has in development are MK8, Smash, and 'X'. Game companies announce new projects all the time, so people just need to be patient.

What we need is a bundle that has an additional Pro Controller for multiplayer games. That should have been included with the Mario bundle.

Since when was $5 expensive for a game? I just bought 3 Wii U games that cost $30-50 each. $5 is nothing in comparison.

And music albums cost more than $5, plenty of people buy those.

I actually heard that Japanese business culture is completely different from the rest of the world. The President / CEO has all the power, while the investors and board members are just there to give financial and managerial advice.

How would this new handheld support both Wii U and 3DS games? How many screens will it have (one or two)? Will games be eShop only? Will this device be as big as the GamePad, to offer a similar experience while playing Wii U games?

I really think many games will benefit from the GamePad acting as a 'second screen' device. Games like Zelda have the map displayed at all times, and it's great for quick inventory management.

Ubisoft is a big supporter of Nintendo (which is ironic because they were one of the first publishers to drop support during the GameCube era). I guess they really are platform agnostic these days. Watch_Dogs is looking amazing, it will be a great replacement for the GTA game Nintendo fans will likely never get.

WB Games deserves a shout out as well. I'm a huge fan of the recent Batman Arkham series, so it's good to see those games on the Wii U. And of course those adorable LEGO games will be on everything under the sun.

We also can't forget about Activision. Call of Duty and Skylanders are never going away, and Activision knows those games have fans on Nintendo consoles (Skylanders especially).

As long as these companies (WB, Activision, Ubisoft) keep supporting Nintendo systems I will be fine with the lack of other third-party support. I don't care about Bethesda after paying the boring and tedious Skyrim. And frankly Rockstar is the only one I'll miss.

OK I think you're missing my point. I'm talking about making MINIGAME collections for mobile devices, not full games. The minigames would allow Nintendo to reach out to a broader audience while keeping their main games exclusive to their consoles.

Look at all the minigames that were in Super Mario 64 DS and the various Kirby games. Those would be perfect for mobile devices because they are simple and easy to play. Even the Game & Watch games would be perfect on mobile devices.

Nintendo could release these minigame collections as a side project while they still focus on their 3DS and Wii U consoles.

Did I say 'only mobile games'? No. I'm talking about them pursuing mobile gaming as a side project while they mainly focus on the 3DS and Wii U. Nintendo can make minigame collections for mobile devices as a way to entice players who love Nintendo's classic franchises. Plus it would be a great revenue stream for them while they get the Wii U situation sorted out.
