Whoa whoa whoa... What's with all this talk about Nintendo buying the Xbox brand? Microsoft would never let that happen, and Nintendo has no interest in "Western" games.

WB Games just announced Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One and PS4. No Wii U this time, unfortunately.

I thought WB Games was one of Nintendo's biggest supporters. At least we still have support from Ubisoft and Activision.

Don't mobile developers have to present their games to Apple / Google before they get approved for distribution?

Why are Sony / Nintendo more diligent with game approval than Apple / Google?

The point is, Apple and Google don't seem to care until the developer is hit with a cease & desist order.

Sony and Nintendo, on the other hand, enforce strict quality control so the problem doesn't happen in the first place.

Why is it so easy for developers to sell clone games (a game that infringes on IP) on mobile app stores? The approval process at Apple and Google should be more stringent so this sort of thing doesn't happen. You'd never see a game like Flappy Bird (or those Pokedex apps) on Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox.

Even Windows Phone is guilty of having clone games, even though Microsoft would never let this happen on Xbox.

Well maybe Nintendo should utilize Dan Adleman as their third-party negotiator, since he has a great track record with indies.

132
Technically Killer Instinct is Rare's IP, so why doesn't Microsoft just let Rare take over its development? They have plenty of options, they don't really need Double Helix.

Why is stock Android more prevelant on tablets than smart phones? Practically every tablet manufacturer that isn't Samsung uses stock Android, but the only phones that use it are either Nexus phones or the Moto X / G.

I really hope Lenovo keeps supporting the "Moto" line, because I don't want my Moto G purchase to go to waste after a few months.

I recently bought Super Mario Galaxy (again) for my Wii U. The game is still just as fun and gorgeous as I remember it. I couldn't find Galaxy 2 at any retail stores. Oh well, from now on I'm just buying all my games online from Amazon.com or Walmart.com.

Leg day? Is that some new meme? I don't get it.

I find it odd that you all claim Nintendo is hard to work with, yet they've done great with indie developers. Indies like Shinen, WayForward, Gaijin Games, and Renegade Kid (Jools Watsham) have praised Nintendo constantly.

Based on what I've seen in the trailer and screenshots, there is no way Xbox 360 and PS3 can run a CryEngine 3 game this well. It looks absolutely gorgeous.

I'm surprised more studios are using CryEngine these days. It just popped up out of nowhere and became the new standard.

The game looks gorgeous, and it running on CryEngine 3 natvely is proof that the Wii U has enough power to surpass Xbox 360 and PS3.

I hate the new character designs though. Sega perfected their character designs with Colors and Generations, so why change it again? I really hope this game is a spinoff, and not a complete reboot.

I hope Roger Craig Smith continues to voice Sonic because he's really grown on me. And they better keep Mike Pollock as Eggman (he's perfect).

Where's all the new IP that Microsoft promised was in development? They're milking their franchises worse than Nintendo it seems. At least Sony creates new franchises each gen.

Nomura analyst now asking why Nintendo revamped its organizational structure to merge consoles and portable devices. Mr. Iwata says there was a huge technological gap in developing consoles and portable games in the past since portable devices run on batteries, but technological advances have narrowed the architectural difference between the two. He adds he doesn’t know yet whether the two hardware will be merged in the future, but the two will become more like “brothers.”

Hybrid is on the drawing board. 3rd Pillar is still a possibility.

The third pillar is 'health', meaning an expanded focus on fitness and educational games. See Wii Fit and Brain Age for example.

Iwata wants to expand Nintendo's reach and create another 'blue ocean', which might work out for them since health is something everyone can relate to.

I'm just glad they aren't exiting the integrated hardware / software business. Utilizing smart phones to promote their products is a good tool for marketing. Using the Nintendo Network ID as a way to tie everything to a software platform (rather than hardware) is a good move forward.

He's obviously talking about making more educational and fitness software like Brain Age and Wii Fit. Those all had 'video game' aspects and they were educational and entertaining. Nintendo is trying something new (as they always do), this doesn't mean they are giving up on video games.

If you guys actually read the whole presentation (on Twitter and GoNintendo), you'd realize that Iwata sees a huge potential market with fitness games. They want to capitalize on the success of Wii Fit and make it even bigger and more ambitious.

Wow Nintendo World Report did a terrible job 'reporting' on this investors meeting. I guess Nintendo's financial health isn't important to you guys.

Back to GoNintendo it seems. At least Rawmeat Cowboy (Kevin Cassidy) cares about this stuff to report on it in its entirety, including the full presentation and the Q&A session.

The Moto G is an amazing phone. It's too bad that Google was too shortsighted with their Motorola purchase. They could have completely integrated the company into their mobile division, like what Microsoft is doing with Nokia.

Well now Lenovo has a decent shot at taking over the mobile market like they did with the PC market. Right?

Looks like I'll be getting that ASUS ZenFone for my next phone. Goodbye Motorola, it's been nice knowing you.

But why does Nintendo need 3rd-party support on their home consoles to stay relevant, but their handhelds do just fine without it?

146
I have a Wii U but I don't have Wifi yet at my new apartment. As long as I can use Hulu and Netflix I'm fine. I don't need hundreds of other streaming and entertainment apps that I will barely use.

Miiverse and off-TV play make the system entirely worth it for me.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Do you regret buying a Wii U?
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:19:39 PM »
Games like Super Mario 3D World, Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and even New Super Mario Bros. U make the system worth it to me. The multiplatform games that the system did get (Batman: Arkham Origins, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag) are just icing on the cake. As long as companies like Ubisoft, WB Games, and Activision continue to support the Wii U then I'll be happy.

I remember when the N64 had practically no 3rd-party support, and it was in a worse situation than the Wii U. But in hindsight everyone looks back on the N64 fondly for the games it did have. I remember when Nintendo even had to suspend production of the GameCube for a few months because they had so much stock that was left unsold. Those were dark times. Sure the GameCube got plenty of multiplatform games, but because of the console's terrible sales publishers quickly abandoned it.

Nintendo has come a long way since then. They finally embraced online with Nintendo Network and Miiverse. They're taking digital downloads seriously with tons of quality eShop games and releasing all their retail games on the eShop. The Wii U is a very good console, but the industry is so focused on hardware power (again) that developers don't even consider the system to be in the same league as its rivals. Yet they still make Xbox 360 and PS3 games, systems which are considerably less powerful than the Wii U.

This whole industry needs to change. Games should be about fun, not hardware specs.

It was inevitable that Microsoft bought the Gears franchise, I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner.

I would probably never buy an Xbox console if they keep locking standard features behind an Xbox Live paywall (streaming services, game DVR, Internet Explorer, etc.). You don't see them doing this **** with Windows.

General Chat / Re: Will digital books and movies ever be 99 cents?
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:59:53 PM »
Well many authors are going with self-publishing services (like 'Kindle Direct Publishing'). They're the indies of the book industry it seems. They don't have to rely on publishers because these self-publishing services make it easier to get your work out there, and you can set your own price. So maybe we will see more 99 cent books this way.

And videogames cost quite a bit to make as well, since you have to pay the coders, artists, designers, voice actors, etc.

Everyone complains about the lack of 3rd-party support on Nintendo's home consoles, but their handhelds sell just fine without major 3rd-party games. Why is 3rd-party support more important for home consoles than handhelds? Why the double standard?
