General Chat / Guess That Quote!
« on: December 27, 2012, 08:46:39 PM »
In this forum game, I post a quotation from a random movie or TV show, and you guys try to guess it. When you guys submit an answer, post the next quotation below your answer.

I'll start...

"Where do you keep your dead?"

"I don't have any dead."

"WHERE?!"

"I don't know... the city morgue?!"

Nintendo Gaming / Guess who's doing the voice work for Bit.Trip Runner 2...
« on: December 17, 2012, 05:55:47 PM »
None other than Charles Martinet!

I gladly welcome his vocal talents to another intriguing game, but I thought he worked for Nintendo? I guess he's a freelancer. Don't voice actors have studio contracts like in other sectors of the entertainment industry (musicians, game developers, etc.)?

General Gaming / How can handhelds adapt to compete with mobile devices?
« on: December 10, 2012, 05:28:49 PM »
People said the PC would kill game consoles. "Why would I buy a game console when a PC is much more powerful? "

Yet despite these claims (which still go on today), home consoles have adapted to keep up with market changes. What was once just a game console is now becoming an all-in-one media box (the Xbox 360 is proof of this). In this way, consoles have successfully differentiated themselves from PC's.

Can handhelds do something similar to better compete with mobile devices (smartphones and tablets)? Mobile devices are now the equivalent of what an Xbox 360 is today (an all-in-one media device). So how can handhelds adapt and differentiate themselves the way consoles adapted to their changing market?

General Chat / What's with all this "PC versus Smartphone" talk?
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:14:12 PM »
Across the various corners of the Internet, I've been reading about how PC's will eventually be displaced by smartphones, because (apparently) smartphones sell more units. Well yes, EVERYONE has a phone these days; they are essential tools for communication while out and about. But the two devices serve very different purposes. PC's are used for content creation and business, smartphones are used for mobile communication (talking, texting, Twitter, etc.). Yes, they both connect to the internet, but that's where the similarities end.

The main problem with smartphones is how unstable the apps are. Smartphone apps crash often (most likely caused by poor coding and memory mismanagement), and their app stores are filled with junk apps made by inexperienced developers.

Also, an oversaturation of devices with different hardware configurations makes it difficult for many people to update to the current software (you never know which device will receive an update). Granted, most of the update problems stem from carriers and manufacturers delaying updates, but you'd never see these problems on a Windows/Mac computer, because Microsoft/Apple control the update distribution themselves.

So I ask, aside from mobility, what's the advantage of owning a smartphone over a computer?

Now if we were comparing tablets to PC's, then it might be a better comparison. We're already seeing Android and Windows tablets that can successfully mimic a PC (both OS and hardware). Microsoft is (ironically) helping to change the landscape (transition?) from PC to tablet, but I highly doubt PC's as we know them will ever go away. They are much more stable and reliable than tablets, at the moment. Plus there's the fact that a majority of businesses and schools use computers for day-to-day tasks.

General Chat / Symbian? (Nokia's old smartphone OS)
« on: December 03, 2012, 11:46:40 PM »
I've been reading about how Nokia killed off Symbian to support Microsoft and Windows Phone. I'm guessing that was a smart move, because Symbian isn't quite a household name like Android, iPhone, and Windows. (I first learned about it during Nokia's Windows Phone announcement)

It's ironic, because Symbian has supposedly been around longer than all of those platforms, yet barely anyone talks about it. If Symbian was so popular, then why didn't it get more publicity from developers and journalists? Even Blackberry is more well known, and that platform is more or less irrelevant now.

General Chat / Japanese entertainment (games, anime, movies, music)
« on: December 03, 2012, 12:02:56 AM »
Japanese games like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Tekken, Sonic, Pac-Man, etc. have achieved widespread appeal and helped rejuvinate the video game industry. But it seems other forms of Japanese entertainment (music, movies, books, cartoons) haven't achieved the same mainstream success. Sure plenty of people enjoy anime, but it hasn't garnered the same widespread acceptance as Japanese video games.

Do you think those other forms of Japanese entertainment (anime, music, movies) will eventually become as popular as Japanese video games?

Nintendo Gaming / Wii U save data question...
« on: November 27, 2012, 11:39:43 PM »
When it comes to downloadable software, does the Wii U have separate save data and game data files (like on the original Wii)? Or are save data and game data linked together in one file (like on the 3DS)?

Nintendo Gaming / Sonic CD on Wii U or 3DS?
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:41:07 PM »
I've been loving Sonic CD on my PS3 and iPod Touch, and I hope we'll eventually see it on a Nintendo platform (Wii U or 3DS). If SEGA were to port Sonic CD to a Nintendo platform, do you want it to be a straight emulated port on the Virtual Console, or the 2011 HD remake?

General Chat / Which laptop would you recommend?
« on: November 21, 2012, 11:27:46 PM »
I currently have a Samsung QX-411 laptop that I bought last year. If I decide to upgrade in the near future, I might go with a different brand. I like my Samsung, but it's a bit bulky; and for the price I paid ($800) the build quality isn't as good as I hoped.

As far as build quality and features, I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

- Lenovo
- Samsung
- ASUS

Which of those is the best quality (hardware)?

Nintendo Gaming / "Wii Mode"
« on: November 17, 2012, 12:31:38 AM »
Why does this even exist? Why must we go into "Wii Mode" just to play Wii games and purchase Wii software?

With the 3DS, you have direct access to all DSiWare from the main menu. No going into "DSi Mode" to play those games. And you can download DSiWare directly from the eShop; on the Wii U you have to load up the Wii Shop Channel and use Wii Points to purchase WiiWare and VC titles.

What I would like is for Nintendo to copy what they did with the 3DS. Make the eShop the central store for all your purchases, whether they are for Wii U or WiiWare.

General Gaming / Dat GTA 5 trailer!
« on: November 14, 2012, 11:04:07 PM »
Boy oh boy, GTA 5 looks incredible. It's everything I wanted from GTA 4. Amazing graphics, a tightly woven plot with multiple playable characters, a HUGE map to explore, more accurate driving physics (cars appear to actually stick to the road when driving at high speeds). Wow! Can't wait till 2013!

I love GTA 4, but the driving can be a bit clunky at times. Cars do barrel rolls more often than Fox. Granted, GTA 4 was a huge improvement over the PS2 games, but Liberty City didn't have much to do outside of the story.

General Gaming / Graphics aren't an important feature on handhelds?
« on: November 14, 2012, 10:20:47 PM »
Why does it seem that gamers and developers care more about graphics on consoles than handhelds? Case in point: The DS & 3DS received more support than the PSP & Vita; the monochrome Game Boy received more support than the colored Game Gear.

On consoles, it's the opposite situation. Developers and gamers prefer the console with the most realistic HD graphics. Look at all the top-selling (and most popular) games this generation; most of them were on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Why are HD graphics so important on consoles, but not handhelds?

Nintendo Gaming / Bad news for the Wii U eShop.
« on: November 08, 2012, 10:26:13 PM »
SOURCE: http://www.nintendo.co.jp

According to Nintendo's Japanese site, SD cards can't be used to expand the console's storage. You must use a USB hard drive for that.

Also, Wii software (Virtual Console, WiiWare) must be purchased on the Wii Shop Channel, which is accessible through the "Wii Mode" app. The content won't be available on the Wii U eShop.

This goes against what the 3DS eShop does, where both DSiWare and 3DS games are available from the same place.

General Gaming / Game systems are not irrelevant. Here's why...
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:28:06 PM »
People have been calling for the death of game consoles ever since the PC became a popular way to play games. Despite the rise of PC's as capable gaming machines, the console market persevered. Now the same thing is happening again with the rise of mobile devices (smartphones and tablets).

But it seems everyone is missing a rather large point:
Video game systems have always been niche products. (This is especially true when talking about handhelds)

The only game systems to ever sell over 100 million units were the PS2 and the DS. Now everyone thinks that if a game system sells less than that, it's considered a failure. They'll use that excuse to say "well there is no need for game consoles anymore, they can't even sell more than the PS2." Which is, of course, a very strange proposition. Since when did "100 million sold" become the standard for success? Most game systems barely sold over 60 million, yet they were still considered successful.

And now we come to smartphones... A phone is a necessity in today's world; everyone has one. That's why they get more developer support. Apple cracked open a huge window of opportunity for game developers and consumers, with the invention of the iPhone and App Store. Now everyone is rushing to capture that market. We've since seen competition from Google and Microsoft, making the mobile gaming market even bigger. But eventually that bubble might burst. Oversaturation of the market will cause people to be overwhelmed with the amount of choices available (too many games, not enough time to play them).

Mobile games offer a nice, quick diversion for people living a hectic lifestyle, but the games will never match the complexity of a playing a game in front of a large TV screen. For one thing, these mobile devices don't have any buttons. Now I know some will say "but then developers can customize their own button layouts", which is good. But then there's a lack of tactile input, which is essential for certain games (shooters, platformers, fighting games, action games, etc.).

As for the actual "smartphones vs handhelds" debate, it's rather pointless to argue about it. We're comparing a phone (which pretty much everyone needs these days), to a handheld gaming system (which is essentially a toy). As I stated above, game systems have always been niche products.

People could use that same argument for the "PC vs console" debate.
Why buy a game console when PC's can do all that and more?

Yet here we are, PC's and console coexisting peacefully. Why can't mobile devices and handhelds also coexist?

General Chat / Microsoft takes on iPad, Surface pricing unvieled
« on: October 16, 2012, 07:32:14 PM »
Microsoft has finally announced the prices for the Surface RT tablet.

$499 - 32GB model (without Touch Cover)
$599 - 32GB (with Touch Cover)
$699 - 64GB model (with Touch Cover)

For comparison, the iPad prices are:

$499 - 16GB model
$599 - 32GB model
$699 - 64GB model

The Surface RT tablet has HDMI and USB ports, making it much more functional than an iPad, and it comes with Microsoft Office 2013 installed.

@Shingi_70, are you here? :)

Nintendo Gaming / RUMOR - Iwata planning huge restructuring of EAD, R&D
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:13:33 PM »
I read this on GoNintendo.

By December 2012, Iwata hopes to put in place a restructure of R&D

- this revolves around the new Kyoto R&D building
- building should house over 1200 developers
- Nintendo has continued to expand R&D operations in its Tokyo sector
- several veteran developers from Square, SEGA, Tecmo Koei, Epoch, and Konami can easily transition to join the EAD Tokyo development section
- Shigeru Miyamoto is expected to leave the EAD Division most likely by December 2012
- Miyamoto has vocalized his intent of stepping aside as General Manager of EAD
- he may create a third development sector where he would work with younger developers
- Miyamoto would focus on smaller resources, and work faster to develop games

2013 Expected Changes
- Major shift in Kyoto development sources involving 3 R&D buildings
- Shigeru Miyamoto stepping down as EAD General Manager
- Takashi Tezuka becoming new EAD General Manager (he is in charge of the Super Mario series)
- New groups / New producers announced for EAD Kyoto / SPD Kyoto
- EAD Tokyo expansion / Masahiro Sakurai possibly joining EAD Tokyo
- New division lead by Miyamoto with younger staff focused on smaller scale games
- Miyamoto's departure inspiring new IPs for the EAD Kyoto Division

NWR Feedback / We really need a mobile version...

General Chat / Resolution of mobile devices
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:48:46 PM »
Why do companies use pixel density (PPI and DPI) to describe the resolution of mobile devices, but TV's are mainly shown as 1080p, 720p, etc. (vertical and horizontal resolution)? Isn't pixel density important with TV screens?

General Gaming / Unlockable content in video games
« on: September 30, 2012, 11:50:11 PM »
What's your opinion on unlockable content in video games (music, cutscenes, etc.)?

I would love it if ALL games had unlockable music to listen to. A few of my favorite games have unlockable music: Smash Bros., Donkey Kong Country Returns, Cave Story, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Kirby's Adventure, Sonic Generations. It's a great reward for beating a game.

Another thing I would like to see more games have is unlockable cutscenes. Metroid Other M did it right, by combining all the cutscenes into an actual movie, with bits of gameplay strining them together.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii U's launch price(s): Is it worth it?
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:49:38 PM »

General Gaming / Indie games (Cave Story is the best)
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:34:16 PM »
I've played through the DSi and Wii versions of Cave Story, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The 8-bit music, Sega Genesis-style graphics, open world, story, controls, weapons, bosses... Everything about it is amazing.

Hopefully Pixel and Nicalis make a "Cave Story 2" someday. But knowing Nicalis' record for delaying projects, it won't come out until 2020...

What exactly is new about the Steam/3DS Cave Story+ port? And is Cave Story 3D worth getting for the 3D graphics and remixed music?
