General Gaming / Anyone have Sonic 4: Episode 2?
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:54:10 AM »
If so what do you think of it? I think it's a huge improvement over Episode 1. The physics are much more accurate (no more wall clinging or wonky running animation), the music is more Genesis-style, the level design is better (but there are still plenty of cheap deaths, like in all Sonic games).

Overall, the game is a solid retro-style Sonic game. It looks and plays very similar to the Genesis games, but it's not perfect. The special stages are also a great bit of nostalgia for those who loved Sonic 2.

My main gripe with the game is the connection problems while playing online co-op. Sometimes I can't find anyone to play with, and when I do, the game lags horribly. I've never had this problem with any of my other games on Wii, 3DS, or PS3, so it must be a server problem on SEGA's end.

It should be said that these problems only occur when playing with random people. When I played co-op with a PSN friend, the game flowed smoothly.

General Gaming / Final Fantasy
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:45:22 AM »
I'm confused as to why some Final Fantasy games have different numbers in America and Japan.

Final Fantasy (US) = Final Fantasy (Japan)
Final Fantasy 2 (US) = Final Fantasy 4 (Japan)
Final Fantasy 3 (US) = Final Fantasy 6 (Japan)
Final Fantasy 4 (US) = ???
Final Fantasy 5 (US) = ???
Final Fantasy 6 (US) = ???
Final Fantasy 7 (US) = Final Fantasy 7 (Japan)

Starting with Final Fantasy 7, we got the same games as Japan. Where are the real FF2 and FF3?

Sony finally did it. They're officially copying Smash Bros.

"PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale" is the name of Sony's Smash Bros. clone. The game features dozens of 1st-party Sony characters (and presumably a few 3rd-party ones too) battling it out in franchise-specific arenas.

The game is being developed by outside company SuperBot Entertainment (I've never heard of them).

As you can see in the screenshots, the game looks like a direct clone of Smash Bros., except characters have life bars instead of hit percentages.

General Chat / What do you think of this quote...
« on: April 26, 2012, 04:00:43 PM »
Quote
Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.

Steve Jobs said this once, and I pulled this quote from his biography. What do you think, would you agree or disagree with his statement?

Nintendo could keep the Wii Remote around for people who like pointer-controlled games (like shooters). What do you think?

General Gaming / If graphics are so important to developers...
« on: April 26, 2012, 01:29:25 AM »
Then why are so many people leaving these big companies to focus on making smaller games with minimal effort? Most games on the App Store look like they were made using Flash. That's hardly pushing graphics or hardware.

General Chat / Is ARM an actual company?
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:15:54 PM »
I've been reading about how ARM processors are used in a majority of mobile devices (phones, tablets, handhelds, etc.). Is there an actual company named ARM (directly competing with Intel, AMD, Nvidia)?

2D sidescroller:  Everything is in 2D and flat (hand-drawn or pixel graphics), characters only move left-to-right, no sense of depth.

EXAMPLES: Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 2, Mega Man X, Sonic 2, etc.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

3D sidescroller: Characters and backgrounds are in 3D (polygonal graphics), characters only move left-to-right, some sense of depth.

EXAMPLES: DKC Returns, Kirby Returns to Dreamland, Kirby 64, etc.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

3D exploration: Everything is in 3D (polygonal graphics), characters can move freely in all directions, true sense of depth.

EXAMPLES: Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Sonic Adventure, etc.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Isometric perspective: Can be either 2D (sprites) or 3D (polygons). Characters move in a psuedo-3D world where the camera is set in a fixed diagonal perspective.

General Chat / Drawing and animation
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:30:00 AM »
Is anyone here a fan of drawing and animation? I've loved studying animation and drawing since I first saw Looney Tunes as a young kid.

On a side note:
Do comic book studios outsource their work to overseas artists the way animation studios outsource animation to Korea?

Nintendo Gaming / Cave Story being remade AGAIN as an eShop game
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:19:57 AM »
According to an article posted on GoNintendo, a recent issue of Nintendo Power has details on yet another remake of Cave Story.

Cave Story is being remade for the 3DS eShop, with added 3D layers, increased resolution to fill up the 3DS' screen, and extra modes / playable characters. The DSiWare game may be pulled from the eShop once the new game is released.

General Gaming / "Hardcore", "mature", "casual", "kiddy"
« on: April 25, 2012, 01:33:36 AM »
Remember when people used to call Nintendo games "kiddy", and PS2 / Xbox games were called "mature"?

When the Wii came out, people started calling Nintendo games "casual", and PS3 / Xbox 360 games were called "hardcore".

Do the terms "hardcore" and "mature" mean the same thing?

General Gaming / Has anyone here bought a video game soundtrack?
« on: April 21, 2012, 07:30:03 PM »
These past few months I've been in the mood to listen to some video game music, so I went on iTunes and bought the Sonic Colors, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception soundtracks.

I'm glad that publishers are uploading their game soundtracks on iTunes, though I wish they'd also put them on the Android Market (Google Play) for people who don't own iOS devices.

What video game soundtracks do you have?

I'm trying to transfer pictures from my computer to my 3DS. They are all .JPEG files. I renamed the pictures to HNI_0000, but when I opened the 3DS camera application, the pictures didn't show up.

General Chat / Fun with Google Translate!
« on: April 20, 2012, 03:14:54 AM »
Has anyone here used Google Translate? As we all know, it's not entirely accurate, especially when translating Japanese to English.

Here's my idea to make the service more fun.
  • Go to Nintendo's Investor Relations Information site
  • Copy the webpage's URL into Google Translate, and translate it to Japanese
  • Copy the Japanese text into Google Translate, and translate it back to English
  • Scroll to the bottom of the translated text, and click the speaker icon
  • Enjoy!

General Gaming / Ideas for the next 2D Mario game
« on: April 09, 2012, 08:11:42 PM »
Let's post ideas for the next 2D Mario game (whether it's on 3DS or Wii U).

I'll start (UPDATED 4/15/2012):
  • A large, connected world map (like in SMW)
  • You can take Yoshi to any level, even castles and ghost houses
  • 4-player online & offline play, with drop-in / drop-out multiplayer
  • Four types of multiplayer modes: Co-op, Coin Battle, Boss Battle, and Race
  • You can even choose to play with CPU players
  • You can now attack other players to kill them (using fireballs, stomps, etc.)
  • Co-op is similar to NSMBWii, where other players can join a single-player game at any time
  • Coin Battle is similar to NSMBWii, where players need to collect the most coins to win
  • Race mode has players racing through a set of 5 levels
  • Boss Battle has players fighting through a gauntlet of bosses
  • Trade items in your Reserve Box with other players
  • Game has a level editor, which allows you to create and share levels with other players
  • Levels are uploaded online for other people to download
  • When uploading a level, choose who can download it: "Friends Only" or "Everyone"
  • You can also submit levels to Nintendo for contests
  • You can customize a level's timer, background art, and music
  • You can even select what graphical style you want (SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, or NSMB-style)
  • You can make your levels play like SMB2, by adding vegetable items
  • Play Coins (on 3DS) allow you to unlock new level editor parts
  • You can transfer levels between the 3DS and Wii U
  • Levels can receive a star rating
  • Players can filter and report levels based on objectionable content
  • Anyone that you've played with online can be sent a Friend Request
  • All levels feature Time Trials and Mirror Modes (like in DKC Returns)
  • One world has randomly-generated level designs, which are different each time you play
  • Hammer Suit, Boomerang Suit, Frog Suit, Tanooki Suit, Cloud Flower all return
  • Bowser, the 8 Koopa Kids, and Bowser Jr. all return, but their locations are random each time you play
  • When you beat the game, the next time you play the bosses will be in different locations
  • New type of Bob-Omb, Aquomb
  • Aquombs can swim underwater, they can also be found in the air riding bubble jets
  • Plumpa is a fat bug that pushes Mario into walls and obstacles
  • Goobit is a small slug that moves under Mario's feet, causing him to get stuck to the ground
  • Koopa Troopas can kick their shells back at Mario (like in SMW)
  • New type of Thwomp constantly smashes into the ground, without waiting for Mario to approach it
  • Dry Bones throw their bones (like in SMW)
  • Lakitu now tosses various items, not just Spinies, he may even toss a power-up or coin
  • Airship and tank levels return (from SMB3)
