One of the most surprising things about Kid Icarus 2 for me was the ability to basically grind for hearts in a way you couldn't do in the first game.  While, yes, there were kill rooms in the first one for you to load up on hearts, this game has things like those bags where the snakes will come infinitely and you could just kill, kill, kill for as long as you want right before you go into that store.

I played the Kid Icarus 1 for the first time on the 3D Classics version so I don't know if that changed this in some way, but in that game the number of enemies in each stage was static and therefore the number of hearts you can get is static.  But this ability to grind really made Of Myths and Monsters a much easier game.

Well, I've played this game a lot more (I'm up to Chapter 6), and my opinion has changed a little.  What was wonderful for the first 4-5 hours has soured a bit.  The game basically grinds to a halt whenever there's a rhythm game involving gyroscopic controls, because they are terrible.  Otherwise, I stand by my opinion that the story is great and the animation remains beautiful.

I wouldn't have that much of an issue with the worst of the rhythm sections if they were skippable, but since they are intrinsically tied in with the story this is not the case.  I've gotten to this absolutely terrible game involving hang-glider combat and I'm not sure if I'm going to keep playing the game I hate it so much.

Okay then. But if they owned 49% of Rare then doesn't that mean they were 49% owners of these franchises as well?

Obviously this is speculation on my part, but I would assume it was a stipulation of the contract when Nintendo bought the non-controlling share of the company that this would not be the case.

254
Also Rare owned the IP not nintendo.

I'm well aware of that, but the fact of the matter is Nintendo owned Rare, so everything Rare owned Nintendo also owned. Do you get it?

Actually, Nintendo only owned 49% of Rare.  This why they were always called 2nd party instead of 1st party developers.  I'm pretty sure any new IPs developed internally by Rare were owned wholly by them.

Carmine!  Play Super Mario Galaxy 2 this very second!  I would put it in my top 3 games ever made, it's such a joy.  But I'm guessing you already know that many people feel this way, sorry if I'm just piling on the backlog guilt.

Deadpool Announced (and its coming to Wii U)
"Suck it Wolverine" - Deadpool
Trailer: http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/14/comic-con-deadpool-video-game-announced-trailer

That trailer was...not good.  I don't if I'm just getting lamer as I get older, but the violence in many modern video games makes me uncomfortable.

As someone who doesn't have much nostalgia for the Final Fantasy series I will never buy Theatrhythm, so I can't wait for more of the staff to get Rhythm Thief.  It's a great game well worth discussing.

I bought the Wii Pikmin 2 a couple of months ago as my FIRST Pikmin game.  Guess what?  I love it.  So much.  Beating that game has made me so so excited for Pikmin 3 on Wii U.  Basically I got Luigi's Mansion at GC launch and, not being in a financial position to get the first Pikmin game (I was a high school freshman) I just never got around to the Pikmin games.  I actually like the Wii play controls so much, I can hardly imagine how it played with Gamecube controls.

So my copy came in the mail today and I've played through the first two chapters of the game.  I kind of love it so far.  It's a little early for my feelings to be completely solidified, but it's really just a joy to play.  The artwork is beautiful, the story charming, the voicework well-done, and the gameplay (mostly) tons of fun!  I say mostly, because, like all rhythm games some of the rhythm sections just fall completely flat.  There's a little side-game where you have to be a cook in a restaurant next to Notre Dame and I found it to be absolutely horrible.  However, when this game is on, and it often is, it's simply a blast!

I just ordered this today.  I'm not usually one to spring for rhythm games but it's been such a drought of 3DS games and this one looked like the most fun to me (never been a fan of Final Fantasy games, so Theatrhythm did not pique my interest).  The dancing part of the demo was...not fun at all, but the other two sections were great!  I especially liked the museum escape sequence, with the hiding behind statues.

It should be noted that the separate company, Sora Ltd., that Sakurai started and Nintendo has a stake in, is still a going concern.  Just the studio that was co-financed by Sora and Nintendo is closed.

Which also means if you lose your system then you are SOL because you can't file a police report over a something you lost.  We'll see how well it works out for Jonny...I'm guessing that it will be a nightmare.  This is the exact reason why I will never purchase any full price retail games on the eShop.

You do realize that you can lose a physical game card just as easily as the system itself, and probably easier, and if that happens you're not getting any help from Nintendo either, right?

Yes, but if you lost your laptop you can re-download every song you bought from iTunes....it's called the future.

Also, iPhone App Store, Xbox Live and PSN. My point is, lacking the ability to do that isn't really a good reason not to buy digital copies since it's the same situation with physical copies.

Point taken, I just don't think I'll be able to get over the psychological barrier.

TalkBack / Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 eShop Price Listing Removed
« on: July 06, 2012, 01:01:00 PM »
My main concern with digital copies is a common one: long-term playing.  I've gone through 3 Super Nintendos over the last 20 years but I'm still able to play all the games I got back in the early 90s because I have the cartridges.  If they had had digital releases back then, Nintendo at some point after the end of that console life cycle would stop supporting re-downloading to new systems and I would be SOL.

Eventually, my 3DS may not work anymore and that might be 10, 20 years from now.  Mario games, even the lesser ones, especially lend themselves well to picking up again after years between playing them, so I will want to hold on to this game for decades to come.  Therefore, I will buy tangible copies of most games.

Oi, still with the police reports?  Nintendo loves to make its customers waste the valuable time of our public safety officials, apparently, since I doubt anyone actually expects the police to expend any energy recovering a little videogame system.  I don't at least.

Playing cards it is!  I was able to get to the platinum status when I realized that my girlfriend's years-old copy of Mario Kart Wii still had the Club Nintendo insert in it :)

It concerns me that they brag about third party support on the 3DS in that article when the support has been just awful.

The titles of their remaining 2012 releases sound a little iffy....but the second best eshop game (after Mighty Switch Force of course) getting a sequel is great news.  Hopefully they'll make a more manageable system for the sspecial abilities.

From the brief glimpse we've had of this game, it's probably the announced Wii U game I'm most excited about.  I love the visual style.  I was reminded of the town in Earthbound: a very clean, bright, and cheerful looking urban environment.
